the scene where he finally gets the person who's across in the buildings' attention, only to find out its a shadow, just mimicing him was terrifying
@atlas_19

What's also cool is he doesn't directly start mimicking him. At first he does not see Mike, and looks like he just noticed him, as if it wasn't 1408 copying him on the other building.

I always found it interesting how the room never kills you. It just tortures you mentally to the point of wanting to kill yourself. Which parallels what it's like living with a mental illness. Even with the imagery of drowning or the feeling of maybe feeling better only to realize that the illness is still there. You're still in the room. And Mike has PTSD from his daughters death which the room can represent because he can no longer run away from the thoughts.

@jdk9673 haha I have PTSD too which is what made me think of it. The movie represented the sense of dread and exhaustation so well. "It's only just begun" playing over and over again is exactly what it feels like when there is no end in sight to recovery. And even with the sense of denial that Mike experiences in the beginning... only to slowly realize what is happening. I think a lot of people can relate to that.

Skipping the 13th floor is an actual thing in most western buildings that are tall enough to have 13 floors because of the superstition surrounding the number. They also don't have 13th rooms either the numbers skip from 112-114, 212-214, etc. In Asia a lot of buildings skip the 4th floor and 4th rooms but not the 13th because 4 is the unlucky number there.

I prefer the theatrical version the most because Lilly hearing her daughter's voice again after her death is a lot more impactful to me compared to the other versions' endings. Edit: Okay, context, the comment isn't about the Mike's character arc or even me saying I prefer it to be revealed that at least something that happened in the room was real. It's simply me saying that between the theatrical version and the director's cut, I prefer the scene in theatrical because of Lily being the one to hear her daughter's voice on the recorder as it feels like it brings more of an impact than Olen hearing Katie's voice as he has no connections to her and no idea who she is either.
@Ma5jay5dontxdoxthat
@Ma5jay5dontxdoxthat 6 месяцев назад
Same. Like yes the "downer ending" he dies, but he dies saving everyone from the room and is with Lily again. The theatrical ending both he and his wife hears her again. In a way that way worse than him dying and the wife (cant remember her name) never really knowing what happened, because the wife has to not just come to terms that ghost are real, but finding out with her dead child, and Mike has physical proof that the last time he saw his daughter he crushed her body monents later. Knowing that is real, and having to live with that seems so haunting.

I think the version that his wife doesn’t hear it still is good because the whole point of the movie was for him to believe what he writes and now he has that experience, it more of a self reflection point of view. To me it fell flat for a specific reason. Now I haven't seen the film in years so it may show this better than I remember, but my impression was it kills the victims full stop. The short story explains there are survivors with severe trauma and that could've carried the theatrical ending better. But if you watch the movie believing it's a death curse, him surviving a fire that intense feels contrived. In an American movie structure "hero has to live" way. That molotov followed by breaking the window caused a fireball explosion seen from the street. There's no way a civilian (no fire protection suit) would survive that. The hero simply won because he beat the room.
@DeathnoteBB

@@cats1970What I don’t like about the movie (other than his near-smirk after his ex-wife hears the voice of their late daughter. Like buddy this was a traumatic moment for you, and it’s traumatic for her too! Wipe the smirk off your face!) is that the endings imply you CAN beat the room. Like cmon. For one, all it took was fire? Nobody thought of that before? For two the books imply there’s nothing to beat. It’s just some otherworldly entity somehow attached to that specific room, and he only lucked into an escape (Mike wonders if the room prefers raw meals). There’s no beating it, only avoidance. Hence why Olin does everything he can within the law to keep it from being booked.

@@Aliyah_666 the theatrical ending is the only one that’s an actually impactful ending to me. The directors cut feels too cheesy with the jumpscare and the stuff of him joining his daughter in the afterlife. 1408 is a huge favorite of mine. I will say, the ending with the publisher reading the1408 manuscript came off to me that the room kept his manuscript & sent it out to get people more interested in 1408. Thats why the room got him so far into the delusion that he addressed it & packed it. Which infers that someone who was a fan of/ knew the main character was involved with the room & that's who was manipulated into sending the postcard that got him here. Maybe a maid was listening to an audio book of his and the room saw an opportunity for more souls.

This film has one of the few theatrical endings that's better than the original/director cut endings. Just the complete look of shock on his wife's face hearing their daughter's voice. You can only imagine the heartbreak she must feel and the sense of relief he has. He has actual proof he survived the room and that what he experienced was real and actually happened. Such a great ending to a great film.

Probably one of my favorite King adaptations. One thing, I'm not sure if you caught: In the movie, they kind of make Enslin out to be a Hunter Thompson-esque character. Which means he had a slight self destructive streak. I never knew about the publisher ending at all til I say your video. I first saw the "depressing" ending, which I much prefer. Not for the jump scare, I think it's dumb as well. The fact that he sacrificed himself, showed that he was finally dealing with the death of his daughter, rather than running from it. This brought about his redemption, which then allowed him to be at peace with his daughter at last. That's how I interpreted it. Had he just offed himself in another way, he would have been another trapped soul in the room. Thanks for covering this one.

In terms of the endings, I agree on the first and second. The first ending with Lilly realizing that he was neither lying nor delusional, and the happy-creepy combo of them clearly beginning to move on but also dealing with what happened in 1408 is great. Second ending had some good elements, but really could have cut various parts out to flow better. In terms of the third ending, I think it's kind of the opposite of what you suggested. The implication I got from that ending is that it's NOT a confirmation that it actually happened. Because we don't have another character's reaction to it in the form of Lily, it's still left very much up to audience interpretation whether it was real or just in his head. While I prefer the first ending, this kind of tracks with the film feeling like a metaphor for his obvious mental health issues in terms of the trauma related to his daughter's death. He's getting better, he's trying to move on, but it will always be with him even if it's not obvious to anyone else around him. The fourth ending feels like it ties more closely with the implications of the short story, where the person who saves him is also tempted to go into the room by the unusual lighting. Mike being lured to the room via a postcard from an unknown sender comes back around with his publicist encountering a similarly mysterious package that could draw him to investigate the room. Unlike the other endings, which seem to be generally positive or at least neutral/bittersweet, this one actually suggests that the room is still very much active and continuing to draw people in. I think it probably would've been better to use something that didn't bring up as many questions as the manuscript though, like sending him the tape recorder with the distorted sounds. The manuscript feels off to me for many of the reasons you mentioned.

I randomly received Stephen King’s book “Everything’s Eventual” for Christmas one year. 1408 is one of the stories in there and when I saw they were making it into a movie, I was super excited. The movie is very faithful to a lot of the short story and adds the stuff about Mike’s daughter to pad out the runtime and character development. I’ve seen this movie more times than I can remember.

Somehow, despite loving 1408 ever since I saw it in theaters, I had no idea about the 4th (3rd in your list) ending. I knew about the publisher one, but the other one I'm just now learning about. Regardless, it really is a great horror movie, and it's a bit of a shame that people don't refer back to it that often when discussing great horror films.

The theatrical cut was so good, because that last smirk, for, me was the room wearing Mike's face and getting to Lily too. She's hearing her daughter's voice asking if they can be together and Mike saying yes before looking at her. Like, she tried to help Mike get out, now she pays the price and her reality is ripped away from her. I can very well imagine the next scene being Lily in the room, alone. But maybe I read a little bit too much between the lines lmao. Would be a cool ending tho. They're together forever, if they like it or not

While this is a possible interpretation of the ending, I find it very unlikely this is intended to be what’s happening. Especially since the theatrical version was created in response to the original ending being deemed too much of a ‘downer’.
