As I Lay... DYING?!

AILD’s music was part of what shaped my taste for metalcore, they had a good run while it lasted at least. I was literally just listening to Anger and Apathy by them a few hours ago too, really sad news.

As long as Phil doesn’t leave, AILD will still have its classic sound. Phil’s really the riff guitarist for the band. I know Tim writes riffs too. But Hipa as far as I know was mostly responsible for solos. Phil is truly the riff master, and IMO his playing is super tight (especially live)

Next step is Phil leaving, and then As I Lay Dying is going to basically turn into a Puddle of Mudd situation where Tim is going to literally be As I Lay Dying with a rotating door of up and coming musicians that want to get their foot in the door touring, and will stay as long as they can tolerate Tim.

I went from skillet to as I lay dying, these guys have been a huge impact on my musical inspiration. It’s so sad to see how things have gone, watching my structure influences fall apart sucks. I hope they all find happiness and things are left on a better note in the near future

After listening to and getting blown away by confined i immediately bought thicc-ass strings and tuned to drop C. Haven't tried any other tuning on my 6-string since. RIP AILD

Well, I saw them in Vegas on Friday and they killed it! The crowd was going ape shit and they sounded incredible. It was so good that I think things will continue for them. Tim mentioned new music coming so I’m optimistic for the future of the band. Great fucking show though. Shadow of intent was fucking crushing it as well.🤘

Unfortunately Tim killed his career when he tried to kill his wife. Irony. And it's ashame cause just like you Nic, As I Lay Dying was one of the bands that I grew up with.

The writing has been on the wall with them releasing Shaped By Fire Special Edition three-ish years after initial release (no new material) and Tim's other side project that sounds almost exactly like AILD.

As I Lay Dying got me into metalcore. Before them, I dabbled with bands who screamed, and then once I heard them, I was hooked. Them and Bullet For My Valentine are the reasons why I got into metal. It’s so sad to hear what is happening with AILD. Like heartbreaking

I'm sad to see what's happening. I too grew up listening to As I Lay Dying and they were (if not the first) band that got me into metalcore

The way they delivered a solid album even after many years proves that they have As I lay Dying sound in them

As I Lay Dying was my ticket to really heavy music and a large part of me wanting to become a metal musician. I remember listening to them as a child and i was literally scared a bit because the level of their intensity was through the roof. Screaming vocals were not common for me to hear at that point, but i just couldn't stop listening to them. Sure enough they've become one of my favourite bands, and I was in love with their sound (big respect to Colin Richardson and Adam D). But when the Tim thing happened, i felt betrayed. So I was really happy to support wovenwar. It felt a little butt rocky at times, and I'd love for Josh to sing at least some of the choruses because I'm in love with his voice as well as his bass tone. I really think that they should've continue working on wovenwar instead of a reunion. I listened to AILD's last album and even attended their gig here in Europe, but it was a bit awkward. What Tim did isn't something you can easily ignore. I understand that everyone deserves a second chance but for some reason I didn't feel that Tim changed enough and took a lesson from it. There is a loss of cinserity that I feel while listening to new as i lay dying stuff.

Grew up on these guys when they first hit the scene. Tim got himself into a big pickle with the crowd he followed and having compiling interpersonal issues. Made a shitty choice and he did his time. I had zero expectations for this band to be the same after. I feel the latest album was a thank you and a goodbye. People make shitty choices everyday. There's a lot of extra details left out of the entire situation because it was blasted through the media. If someone does their time and moves on great. At least there's a fantastic back catalog that still hits hard. As a mental health counseling masters student I can only imagine the work everyone in that band had to do on their own to forgive and move on.

They were absolutely my favorite metalcore band of the late 2000s/early 2010s and I felt like they were absolutely improving with each subsequent album. I didn't think their comeback album was quite as good as the last one before Tim got busted but the promise was there. Big shame.

100% agree with Nic. AILD was the band that changed my guitar work from Blink182 type stuff over to Metalcore. They were my favorite band for half a decade easily. I used to be able to play both guitar parts, from all of their songs, for their first 4 albums note for note perfectly. They heavily influenced my personal style. They were followed closely by Oh, Sleeper in my top bands.

I honestly think Jordan is not willing to play in as I lay dying as long as the former band mates are out…And I totally get that. This band is magic when all the parts are working together and it will never be as I lay dying without all the members.

I saw them last night! 6/12/22. best concert I've been to in awhile, loved Tim. he was so encouraging to the crowd and spoke about a non profit organization that deals with addiction and emotional health. loved them and want to see them again!

I completely agree and feel just the same as you Nik. First time I heard Meaning In Tragedy and Through Struggle back in 2006, (I was 14), I was absolutely changed forever. It's just sad that your favorite band is breaking up a second time after such a legendary comeback. I'm sooo thankful I had the chance to see them on the Shaped By Fire tour, all 5 dudes together one last time!

I've listened to AILD since like, 2010 or so, and I'm beyond excited to see them live on Thursday. That being said, it's bittersweet, because it won't be the original band by any means. Really bummed out to hear about Jordan leaving now while I was still trying to get over Josh's departure. I'm still going to enjoy the show but it's just not the same.

Shadows are Security will always be one of my favorite albums, period. Sucks that this happened, but could you really see consistent good AILD music coming out of the situation post Tim out of prison?

i saw the music video for 94 hours back in 04 (?) when i was 17 years old, kind of liked it but didn't really pay much attention until in 2010 someone gave me a copy of the powerless rise which had me nailed to the wall instantly and i was hooked. became AILDs biggest fan here in germany, met the guys backstage when they were in cologne touring for awakened in 2012. when the news came what tim had done i was so disappointed i couldn't listen to any of their music for years (wovenwar was great though) - until they dropped my own grave. it's just like you said, it's sad to see what is happening, only this time it feels... finite. i don't believe they'll ever recover. what's left for us to cherish is all the amazing records they've made.

This kind of feels like an obituary, but whatever. I specifically remember where I was sitting when I first time heard AILD. I was 13/14 years old and it was 2004ish. My buddy Nico's older brother liked them and Nico told me to check them out. I never heard anything like them before and it was the beginning of my road into metalcore. Confined might be one of my favorite songs of all time. An Ocean Between Us is a masterpiece to me. I can remember sitting in junior year english and my buddy Mike called ALID the "kings of metalcore" and I was like well yeah. I also remember where I was at when I saw the news about Tim. I was conflicted on how to feel and still am today. I watched their mini documentary This is Who We Are a handful of times because they were all such likeable dudes and I almost felt like they were my friends because they were so down to earth and so relatable. I almost went to their show in Tucson this past Saturday but I saw the news about Jordan and I just felt heartbroken. I understand why this is happening and don't blame the ones who left, I support them. This just feels like the end of an era and a piece of me feels like it's gone now too.

Slipknot was what got me into metal when I was in middle school. But I’m pretty sure the first two cds I got was All Hope is Gone when it was released and An Ocean Between Us. Despite everything that album will always have a special spot for me

Man this is really heartbreaking. I remember working a supermarket job that I dreaded going to when I was 17 or 18 and every break I had and when I would walk to and from this job I would listen to all sorts of metalcore but As I Lay Dying was played the most. It somehow made that shitty job bearable. I feel like at this point its like a pet that's old and at the end of its life.. you don't want to keep prolonging the suffering and at some point you've just got to end it. I'd prefer they just call it quits on their own accord than have the band slowly fall lower and lower till its eventually just remnants of a once great band.

They're the reason I got into metalcore too. For me the first songs I ever heard from them was "Elegy" and "Collision." Frail Words Collapse. This breakup is the worst thing to happen to me regarding music aside the passing of Alexi Laiho. I still support Tim and have hope he will change and get the band moving again.

I felt the same way the first song i heard from them was “Confined” and i was like oh my and it was sad that the band is disbanding they were apart of my teenage years last song i bought from them was “the toll it takes” after that i couldnt really get into them anymore but i will always play the OG AILD songs

AILD will forever be my favorite band! No other band has ever gotten me the feeling like when I first heard AILD.

The first time I heard of as i lay dying in high school with fuse with the song confined. Then I got an ocean between us in 2007, I was just 16. I still want to see them li ve in grand rapids, michigan july 1st still though.

I discovered the dudes when they toured with BFMV in 2006 and fell in love by the very first riff (96 hours). After I listened "Blinded" for the first time, I was hyped af for a new era. So sad. Tim fcked it up. After he got released from prison I saw them once again and Tim said "Thank you for giving US second chance...". No Tim, it was YOU who got a second chance.

Nick Hipa and Jeremy DePoyster (Nick as a guitarist, Jeremy for the vocal combo) were the reasons I got into metalcore riffing. Hoping the best for Nick, Josh and Jordan. Wovenwar part 2?

I feel you man. As I Lay Dying was one of the first metal bands I truly connected to, all the way up to the new album, I'm a giant fan of their work. Such a shame for all metal fans to see things go sour again. I was really looking forward to that tour with Whitechapel coming up, two of the best in the genre. Hoping things eventually work themselves out.

Never really was a huge fan of them, but I respect their place in the scene. I think that no matter what happens next, they'll always have a place in the hearts of the fans that stuck by them for so long, very much like yourself, Nik. GG or not, the replay button exists for a reason.

I was pretty well into metal and maybe even a few metalcore bands at the time but it was definitely a similar experience, I legit remember the first time I listened to through struggle and I was almost immediately hooked. The only other thing I was like “oh this is heavier than I usually like”… That changed real quick. Absolutely obsessed with them. Finding out what tim did was pretty devastating. And although the older ones were absolute classics, I felt awakened was their peak musically at the time. They had evolved so much and after that many albums I feel like it becomes less and less common for a band to keep moving forward like that. Well before you knew it time flew, tim was out, and then bam they are all back together. Definitely got me super excited. Shaped by fire was a really good album too and I listened the shit out of it. As some others stated it seemed more like a one final goodbye and they are probably right. I remember watching the interview where all the members had talked about the time between what happened and getting back together. Something is telling me there was quite a lingering animosity there. And understandably so. Now moving on to the exits and Jordan announcing not going on tour due to ongoing problems. It does kind of suck, but for whatever reasons any of the members have for leaving. I’m all for them. Anything can be said but chances are we will never really know what went on with the band. It’s their choice. And on the bright side, think about how many different projects all these members are touching now. Hopefully they will give to them what AILD couldn’t/could no longer.

Totally agree. The last album is such a masterpiece. Completely impacted me. My own grave is ridiculous good. I hope they find peace among them.

I'm soooooo so so glad i got to see them live again right after they got back together, at an absolutely small venue. These guys are OGs to the genre. Sad day.

i first became aware of the band with The Sound of Truth, but it was the Powerless Rise that got me into them. it's one of those bands i need a spoonful of sugar when i listen because yeah, the drama is hard to forget about

I grew up with Phil in my early years. He actually taught me my first song on guitar. “Machine head” by Bush. This is sad news to fans and the band. Despite what has happened they tried so hard to put out music for the fans. I will always support the members of this band for their decisions and hope the best for whatever outcome may happen.

Dude like you…I grew up on AILD… hearing that nick left really hurt. And then Josh left and that’s when I knew… there’s no coming back from that. It doesn’t matter who they get to fill in… they will never be what they were in their prime. Yes what Tim did was wrong and I don’t support it at all…but this band got me into metal in general and shaped and molded my guitar style and influenced so much to my writing style. If Jordan leaves…that’s literally the whole musical foundation of my all time favorite band gone :’( I look at it as… at least they came back after Tim’s stint in prison…made an awesome album that was a brutal but yet refreshing sound… I will never forget meeting them at higher ground in Burlington Vermont…every member was humble and down to earth and let me take pictures with them and chill for like 15-20 minutes with them. You guys made some of my best musically inspired memories

Aaah the feels. I legit remember taking a huge leap from a cute Korn song to AILD, which threw me straight into metal. Shadows are security, and first CD I ever was An Ocean between us 😢. Luckily it's not the only metalcore band, but man, it's the OGs for me. Air punching for life 🤘👊

My cousin played the Confined Music video and that intro got me hooked into Metal at 13. Bought the CD a week later and the rest was history.

Same here man. I hope Tim and the remaining fellas keep their heads up and make at least one more album. AILD and Killswitch(Howard Jones era) were the TWO bands that got me into metalcore. Linkin Park and Korn were my gateway bands into metalcore like AILD, Killswitch, and Underoath back in the day.

I've only recently really got into AILD and it's sad to see that I'll probably wont ever experience a new album release from them. I really think this is it for them, all we can hope for now is that the AILD folks all get into new bands and continue to create amazing stuff

Saw them play here in Tucson last weekend, the entire show was fantastic. Only had a few missed marks that I noticed. Tim teased that the new lineup has a new song in the works, so I'll judge after that comes out.

My childhood metalcore favorite band. It is sad without a doubt but I am just happy with what was. I own all of there cds 💿! They simply will not be the same without the original members.

I recently started listening to AILD, about a year ago, and im really sad, because i really wanted to see them live in our hometown

I bought Shadows are Security because they were on the Taste of Chaos tour and i wanted to listen to some songs so i would know what to expect. Holy shit I was blown away. Had no idea how much that changed my music taste. Or at least added a dynamic to it. I have a hard time with the whole Hitman thing, I have the same issue with Lost Prophets.

One of the first metalcore shows I went to after the military. 2004. As I Lay Dying / Every Time I Die / The Black Dahlia Murder / Scarlet. Will never forget that first time seeing them.

Damn, feels like the end of an erra. AILD was one of the main reasons I picked up a guitar in the first place, just had to learn that through struggle riff. Very randomly ended up buying an EC-1000 from Tim a handful of years back, spent an hour chatting with him, and I gotta say....... One of the nicest, most humble people I've ever met. Funny how life works.

The part in 94 hours, we all know what part I’m talking about. But the first time I heard that was the moment I fell in love with double bass drums, and to this day nothing gets me more excited in a metalcore song that double bass. All because of that one section of Jordan’s drumming

I am 31 already (time flies) and I remember they were also the first metalcore band I have ever listened. I can clearly picture the day I decided to put Frail Words Collapse on my MP3 going to the institute and 94 hours started. I didn't know what a breakdown was, I just remember I thought "wtf is this AWESOME BRUTAL shit?". It's a shame things got to this point.

Saw them in Tucson on my birthday the other day and they sounded great (mostly wanted to see shadow and whitechapel) but we shall see how long they stick around.

Tbh i remember hearing 'the sound of truth' when i was younger while dicovering the genre and it gave me a boost to listen to this kind of music more and more. Don't get me wrong i love every single metal/heavy genre and some songs more than others but this band really got me into that shit for the long run.

They were a HUGE influence on my guitar playing and metal taste. All the drama along the way has been a huge bummer, but I always had hope that they'd get it worked out and get back to crushing it. This news is incredibly disappointing for me and many others. I'm glad I at least got to see them live a few times, they were epic. Vaya con Dios fellas!

Just saw AILD live in des moines. They still kicked ass, and honestly seemed real nice and genuine guys.

Hopefully they continue on this tour bc I bought tickets to see them on this tour so who knows

I used to listen to them as a little teenager discovering world of metal sub-genres and was sad when they no longer were releasing (not knowing why). Was so happy when they came back and then learnt what happened.. and well.. it didn’t last long 🤷🏻‍♀️😢

Through Struggle indeed. Seen them with ATB in a room that holds 200. Amazing!

oh man, this news still hurts. For me it was gg when Josh left, because his voice for me was the most important part of As I Lay Dying´s character. Nick already was important but you can always find another really good guitarist, replacing a voice is always way harder and mostly, near impossible.

Saw them here in el paso two nights ago! They were on fire!!! I know Tim had his problems bit he legit is trying to move on from it all, he and the lads put on a hell of a show!!

Saw them last night. A shit ton of people left before and during their set. A bunch of the seats were emptied out that were full during whitechapel’s set. It was crazy. We wanted to get out of the pit because it was getting wild so we walked up and like half of the seats were empty. Pretty sad when everyone leaves before the headliner lol

Quick story: I moved into a house in like 2015 and then maybe like a year after I had to have a maintenance man come out for something. When he showed up, he noticed my guitars and my long hair and asked if I was the metal guy his son used to freak out over. I told him I didn't know what he was talking about and he shot a text to his kid asking who the guy was that he used to freak out over. Low and behold, it ended up being Nick Hipa! Apparently the kid made his dad text him when he was going over there cause I guess he was an AILD fan. So, I got on Instagram and sent Nick a DM with a pic of my front door and he ended up getting back to me a short while after. He told me so much cool shit about my house like, 2 AILD albums were done here in my upstairs bedroom and all kinds of amazing musicians have stayed here over time. I even still get George Lynch's junk mail sometime. I thought that was a pretty cool thing when I learned it and I've been here ever since.

Saw them in San Antonio a week ago and they fuckin killed it! As long as Tim and Phil are there aild will live 🤘🏻

This is one of those times that its hard to separate the art from the artist. I love their music but from the few interviews I've seen with Tim and his ig posts he's always kind of made me uneasy for some unexplainable reason. Needless to say, putting a hit out on your wife can have that effect on people. Unfortunately I think there's that AND more issues with the band they can't legally discuss.

I remember getting two of their tracks somewhere in the local network and when I first listened to it (I listened to like alternative stuff, rock, etc.) I was like WHAT IS THIS -- dude screaming, what is happening?! And I just dropped those for a couple of months. Was kinda extreme for me. But the music wasn't abundant, so a bit later I came back, listened it again, and got a taste of it. Through Struggle and Meaning in Tragedy were those two tracks. And look where I am now... Thinking AILD are kinda mild :D Still listening all of their discography to this day.

Talking about missing this sound, I get a real 2000’s metalcore vibe from Phinehas, though maybe the “old” sound is why I don’t see them talked about as much. Got them from one of your riff videos and dove deep, guys are killer.

Came in to the band when I heard "Nothing Left" back in the day. Enjoy their older stuff more though. But it sucls hearing this news.

(Hope you read this Nik) Through Struggle changed my life. Lyrically was a masterpiece in my 16 year old eyes. Before that day, I never thought about lyrics as important. It opened up my eyes to emotions. Blew me away. Since that day, I've taken music to heart. To feel the way another person feels when they pour there heart and soul into the music they've created. It's special.

Saw them last night on their tour. it was incredible to see them live and the fill ins did great but it was missing....something. still a great show to go to for Shadow of intent and White Chapel though

My first metalcore album was Norma Jean O ' God the Aftermath. Nevveerrrr looked back. These guys were a very quick second album.
