I have been requested to post an unedited version of my “kickstart fail” video from a couple weeks back.
This will probably be VERY boring for some viewers (unless you like watching me suffer of course lol) so take this as your warning.

Red, I say everything very respectfully. Now, watch yourself in the video, with each kick you turn the Throttle, some more than others, but you're adding more fuel to a already flooded engine. To correct this, HOLD the Throttle wide open and kick 3 times ok. Just like a flooded old hot rod with a carburetor. If it doesn't start, YOU NEED to check and replace the spark plugs. Once they're fuel fouled, sometimes you have no choice but to replace them, at least 2 on the left. You also may have a vacuum leak somewhere. Get it running, use a El cheapo propane torch, DON'T LIGHT IT, put a piece of rubber fuel line on the nozzle and with the engine idling, turn on the gas, LIGHTLY and point the rubber hose all around the intake clamps and carb mounting. If you have a leak, the revs will go up where the leak is. I'll never ever give you bad advice. Yes there's a hundred other things to check, but that was the basics you can do I'm sure. I have a 5" stroke Panhead I built in the shop, 2 prime kicks key off, I take my hand off the Throttle and 1 kick she lights off. You'll get your technique down and don't be afraid to throw in a set of plugs, it's sometimes the only way. RIDE SAFE RIDE FREE T.S RACING

I hope to do some videos in the future so you can see what I do. I'm just swamped right now, but I'll let you know. Electronic ignition, .040" is starting point for gap on the plugs. Use a wire gapping tool, or feeler gauges, NEVER those goofy tools that look like a quarter. 1 and 1/2 turn out on idle mixture screw starting point. The carb pilot jet is generally the first to clog, so pull it out and check it. I use REDLINE total fuel system cleaner because it works. Follow directions, don't over use it. P.S. Red, don't underestimate the importance of the battery cables, especially the ground, YES EVEN ON A KICKER . Next video is you lighten the fire in 3 kicks !!!!!!

@Boosted Twin Cams I’ve got one video up here of me starting it on the first kick literally right after I put in new Autolite plugs and gapped them (with on of those stupid quarter things) at .040. Since that vid, every other time I’ve tried to start it it’s been a lot of kicking. I took the plugs out and they are black, not thick with carbon but black nonetheless. Yesterday, same deal, bike wouldn’t start no matter what I did. I tried your technique with the open throttle to clear out the fuel after I thought I might have flooded it, still nothing. But then I checked my battery and it was floating around 11.98 to 12 volts so I was thinking maybe that was my issue yesterday any way? You mention the battery cables so I would think same would go for a super low battery too? 12.5 is probably already getting low from what I understand and closer to 13 is better eh? Thank you so much for taking that time and sharing your knowledge! I’m going to try every bit of advice you’ve given me here 🤞 It would be awesome to see what you’ve got going on too! Sounds like you must have a shop somewhere? Don't feel bad Lil Red. I once kicked my Shovel in a full circle in about a 2 hour period. I had a fouled plug (no tools of course) but finally got it running on one cylinder. Rode it all the way home on one cylinder too.

Number 3) And one more life hack: this method is suitable for old motorcycles with primitive electrics (where there is no smart switch). The charger is connected directly to the battery (the charger must not be a modern digital one). In general, the charger gives an additional current, the spark becomes stronger, which makes the mixture easier to ignite. But you can't keep it like that for a long time, so that the ignition coils don't burn out.

Had the same problem with a paughco rigid With a 1976 Shovel back in 1990!!!! The advance assembly. Springs were bad and when I took the plate and points off the springs fell on the ground so I bought the stainless steel Rivera !!

My late grandfather (God rest his soul), exchanged his old motorcycle for a two-speed moped for us. And I remember perfectly for the rest of my life how a whole crowd of guys and I tried to start his engine (alas, some of these guys are no longer alive). And one of the guys taught us an old way: we pour some gasoline into the hole where the candle is screwed in, and then we just push the motorcycle. (Naturally, one of the gears turns on).

Strong right leg and a lot of determination there! 🤔 I've found that holding the front brake and throttle while starting keeps the bike from moving around and keeps you from inadvertently pumping more gas into it. I was thinking you should check for a vacuum leak around the intake manifold seals and carb mount also, it would account for your success with useing extra gas to start it. I like the propane trick just be carefull not to let it get into the air cleaner or it will raise the RPM without there being an actual leak.

My old ironhead harley chopper is cold nature too. Sometimes it takes me 20 or more kicks to finally crank it. But ya gotta love the old choppers!! Haha. It's rewarding once they crank up worth every minute of it :)

Much respect Red , you need to learn the routine , I found that if it doesn't start turn the Key Off full throttle hold it their Kick it 4 times feel the cycle then No throttle Key on , one kick start ( that works for mine ) I hope that helps , Oshit I'm in Australia , you know up side down to you , you may have to lay down to do this ?

weighing 120 lbs wet is not going to help. fuel on, couple of squirts if you have an accelerator pump, 3 kicks to prime, get the rear cylinder at or just over TDC then nice full swing. ps we've all been there / go there. Anyone can look tough when all they do is press a button like on a 'kitchen appliance'.

Great video-well done for posting. Your left foot is coming down to the ground before your right foot has kicked straight through the stroke which is taking out a lot of your immense effort. You’re concerned about a kick back. If you don’t touch down with your left foot and kick right through you’ll get more weight and momentum behind the kick and the ratchet in the transmission will do it’s job and you won’t get a kick back. You can always practice with everything switched off. Keep on keeping’ on! Cheers from England.

PS just a thought again sorry if you do end up in a situation just open your throttle up fully to let the exhaust gas through and you find it will clear the cylinders

REMEMBER when ya do the three kicks to clear it ,to have the ignition OFF.Broke my foot trying to kick my 96in shovel off,engine would sump badly and at the time I wasn't sure why.So even with a stroker kicker arm it turned over slow(til the oil ran out the Crankcase vent.I got careless and when the arm reached the bottom,I didn't wait long enough,nor turn off ign and as I let the Arm come up with foot still on it launched me. When I came down I had a broken foot due to my foot turning sideways as I was launched. Needless to say the 60 mile ride home wasn't fun(after I had somebody push start me).

I have heard these horror stories from many a old biker and I err on the side of caution EVERY time I put my foot to that peddle. But accidents can always happen, that's when prayer comes in handy 😅

@@RedRiderCanadaBC True but God gave us free will,and if we don't use common sense and remember the engine can/will run backwards for a second>People used to brake there arms starting model T's with a hand crank.Just make sure it can't won't fire as you release kicker. I want to commend you for your knowledge of your bike and desire to learn...to many HD riders (sure it holds true for Indians etc)nowadays would be lucky to be able to find/change sparkplugs!

Please do! Anything at this point man I tell ya. But hey! Got it started first kick in the next vid so what the hell is up with that?? Seriously, tell me what you think. I’m not a mechanic and I don’t even know much about those motors, whatever I do know now is just from trying to get this thing going. Like I said, I had it all figured before the motor was rebuilt and now it’s like I’m back at square one 😑 Id like to know if it’s me just not getting it or if it’s some issue I need to source out in the bike… gotta be simple either way (I’m hoping) cause it runs nice when it is running… I just wanna ride it without the leg breaking labour haha 🙄

You definitely need to learn the combination. Also you are trying to kick from the very top or highest point on kicker. Bring it up to where you are comfortable.

wow I'm glad you did this - though it must be a painful memory :) You have tremendous patience and strength btw. what was the switch you kept fiddling with near the kicker?? Most of the time she gave you nothing which suggests electrical - but can't be sure yet. you say she started after the video. What did you do - or did you just keep trying.? How much longer did it take - forgive the bombardment of q's lol

That’s my ignition switch thereby the kicker. I’m just in a habit of switching it off when I want to give it primer kicks or when I’m trying to clear out some of the gas if I think I’ve flooded it. I honestly can’t really remember what I did to get it started after all that b.s. 😅 But I think I let it sit for a few minutes then gave it a few more squirts of gas, and a few (or a lot) more kicks and then it started up. I’m not an expert by any means so this is all trial and error for me… it seems to me like it should be starting easier at this point though, so I’m going to test my coils and make sure they are still good. It’s either that or I’m just some how not getting it yet. I’ll get it started easy some days and then other days it’s just a real hassle.

Fuel on, throttle slightly open 2 kicks to prime. Ignition on, Choke on and kick!!!. Meat meat meat potato!, Let the choke off and take over with the throttle. If after a few fails of this sequence pull the plugs clean dry re install and try again. A low battery can also be an issue Then it can go back to the stator and regulator?. Air intake leaks don't help but ive started bikes with them and found them causing the bike to run erratic down the road farting and popping revs dying then picking up etc. All bikes start differently my shovel has a Hi 4 Crane ignition and a CV carb so it generally starts easy. Check coil hi tension leads as well make sure they are on your Coil/ Coils fully. Check points and condenser if it is a points system?. But after all that id smell the oil as its bound to have a lot of fuel in it after all that throttle work and no fire.

Hi there are red not being A big head but you have an Excelerator pump I think on your carburettor on old cars or bikes with Excelerator pumps if you Twich your hand on the throttle the Excelerator pump is operated pumping fuel petrol gas whatever you like in England we call petrol insure cylinders and flooding the engine up I’m lucky I don’t have that sort of throttle on Bsa and it’s a problem lots of people end up with with a vintage veteran motor cars the easiest way I find is to give two pumps with either a foot or a hand throttle which gives you a nice rich mixture in your manifold and then just kick it straight with no twisting on your twist grip Hope this helps enjoy your channel Michael England that is Michael in England good luck

I’ve commented on a few of your vids. I have a slab side magneto fired pan/shovel, but with it coughing out carb, have you checked your cone timing adjuster? I don’t know the proper name, but it has a gyro adjusted timing retard. If its not working, it’ll run full advance timing when kicking. If I do that with my fixed mag (spins on post like manual points) it’ll kick back pretty hard as the timing is causing the piston to snap backwards, not forward like it should with a delayed spark. Something to check out and easily investigated through cone cover. Check out Pacific Mike’s video. Amazing mechanic. Unlike some others on RU-vid.

Shit I feel bad for you , every time you Kick it you Pump more Fuel in to it , your plugs are Swimming who showed you that , I'm sad I can't come and help you ( I'm in Aust ) your leg must have one big muscle or it feels like it's about to fall off . Probably didn’t want to interrupt, never kicked a bike over, or even better didn’t just muscle in with a hey lil lady out the way , I’ll show you how it’s done attitude. Patronising in the extreme. You’ve got some stamina there! You need to swear a lot more, that’s what I do. It doesn’t help but it makes you feel better!

@@highdownmartin i think you missed my point. back in my day it would have been the other way around. it was meant as a joke for the other old timers who watch this channel. i wasn't trying to disparage or mock anyone. i have 8 adult children and 15 grand children. i have my time in pushing strollers and kickstarting bikes.
