I built this rig to be able to handle a large variety of climates, but this is still the testing phase, and unfortunately it is not passing all the tests. Winter seemed to come out of nowhere this year, and it came with fury. Nights were starting to get below freezing, but waking up not only sub zero temperatures and snow, was an unexpected surprise. I am certainly not complaining, because these are all necessary tests for the rig, and I am actually quite happy to identify issues through temperatures and conditions that are still manageable. I thought that the rig would be able to go quite cold with an almost stock heating system, but unfortunately that does not seem to be the case. By the end of the first night, I woke up to a nice and toasty rig, but frozen pipes, which is a greater issue than a chilly living quarters. Frozen pipes quickly turn into busted pipes, and having just redone all of the plumbing, that is not an avenue I want to revisit this early in the new rig. Lucky for me nothing broke, and I have some awesome ideas on how to overcome these issues.
Outside of freezing pipes, the rig has done incredibly well, and most of the other concerns are basically just learning curves. The rig is 12,000 lbs, and with DRW that equates to some great traction. Add to that the 4 wheel drive and snowflake rated tires, she's ready to tackle any climb, but stopping is the number one concern. Cold temperatures, weight and good tires will get you surprisingly good traction, but once that traction breaks it is a different game entirely, and that is the game I am trying to learn.
This truck has drum brakes on the back and discs on the front, which is actually a very good combination, but that strong braking power up front can be a difficult balance while learning the capabilities and limitations to the setup. I am fortunate to be traveling some very remote locations, so I can really play with different speeds, turns and stops, without having to worry about traffic or any other human presence. As for the overall performance, I am very happy with the truck, and I don't think much needs to be changed. If I plan to do a specific northern winter trip, I will pick up a nice set of studded tires, but other than that I think it is just time behind the wheel to get a strong understanding of the performance in these challenging conditions.
Now, I think it is important to say, this is not an announcement of a winter break, this is just the close of the summer travel season. Winer is a period of time that I still have to find some consistent solutions for within the channel, but going into this one I think I have some really neat ideas that will bring a big variety of very exciting content. I don't want to say too much more, but I do want to say thank you! Thank you for enjoying the summer season, and thank you for enjoying the first season with the new rig. This was a lot of risk for me, and a big challenge, but I could not have possibly planned a better season. The channel growth was amazing, the stories were exciting and beautiful, and the rig held up to a far greater test than I had anticipated subjecting it to.
I am so excited about the future, and I am so happy to have you all along in the passenger seat.

I'll try and make this concise, here goes: The bison hang out along the road there because when they repopulated the area that is where they unloaded them from the transport trucks. So, to them, that is home base. The verges along the Alcan are kept groomed and wide so you can see animals that maybe approaching the road in time to slow down. The caribou are after the salt used on the roadway in winter, normally you'd not see them in summer at all. Back in the day both the road and the vehicles on it didn't have the engineering, range, etc that we do today. All those abandoned resorts, fuel stops, cafes had their day but most all traffic can drive faster, further now. Fun fact, caribou when they are wild, reindeer when they are a managed herd. Thanks for putting up with my Ted Talk.

they like the minerals from off the road dont have to dig in the hard ground maybe, dont know if they salt the roads way out away from towns but here in the states they now salt in almost every state even California cause people just dont slow down for bad weather

Every Saturday morning I start my day off the same way: wake up, eat breakfast with my daughter, turn on a cartoon for her and put on Destination Adventure for myself. Selfishly, I want every episode to be an hour long because your videography skills are second to none. Thanks for another great summer season. Looking forward to the winter edition... possibly a trip to Oregon?? It's a great state to explore!

What a beautiful hot springs. Years ago I had a truck driver stuck there waiting hours for tire repair. They offered to let him hang out in the springs. He turned it down. I can’t believe he didn’t take advantage of that place. Looks like heaven

I've only driven the Alcan twice. The first time back in '86 in the late spring, and then last December. Normally we take the Cassiar going both north and south, but last year we decided to head south on the Alcan. My husband was ahead in our 1-ton Dodge and I was following in my Matrix. It was dark by then and I came around a corner, so had slowed down, when a moose stepped out on to the road. I went to slow down further and just kept on going! Right into the ditch! Thankfully I went in slowly, but I was stuck. My dog didn't even wake up when we hit the ditch! lol! Thankfully, hubs noticed and stopped! But we were a long way from Fort Nelson and had to leave the car there. Truckers are great on the northern roads and always stop to make sure you are ok, which several did. Long story short, a tow truck rescued my car the next morning and brought it to Fort Nelson. $2000 tow bill! Thank goodness for BCAA! Looking forward to what's next!! Take care, Dustin-Sue

About the abandonned hotels and resorts along the Alcan: They were all up and running until the early 90ies. Then, flights became cheaper as gas for driving cars up and down the Alcan. Another issue was the expensive fuel for their power supply by big generators, as most of those resorts are offgrid. I remember in the 80ies, they ran big Diesels 24/7

On year my late father in law went fly fishing in the fall and came back on the plane with a Caribou in quarters for me to butcher and wrap. He swore he caught it with his fly pole. Your outdoor videography is the best I have seen on RU-vid. It rivals any cinematography. You make a excellent director and photographer.

My Mother asked me ( when I was about 12) what the earliest thing I could remember was. I told her about about seeing a crane lifting a wrecked car from deep in a rocky creek bed, and a few other scenes. She told me that was from 1957 on the Alcan Hwy. It was ALL gravel back then. Only primitive gas stations every 200 - 300 miles or so. When you passed one, you stopped even if they were closed and waited until they opened next morning. We were from (Ft.) Beal AFB transferred to Elmandorf AFB. Alaska was not yet a state so we got extra time off to say good by to our family in Georgia. So we drove from North California to Atlanta,Ga and then from Atlanta to Anchorage.

Liard hot springs was the site of the worst black bear attack. 3 people died and a 4th was injured. It happened at the upper pool (now closed). If not for an American that had a gun, authorities believe the attack would've continued. There was nothing wrong with the bear. Good video Dustin.

On the farm not that many years ago, we had been using for many years a D9 cat possibly the last working cat from the Alaska highway build. It was a monster. Cables not hydraulic, difficult to find strong cables for it. There was a old timer worked for Cat in Calgary that was helpful with repairs. He had worked on the same type of cat when young. We bought it for $5000 at an auction in 1980. It was big and heavy enough to have difficulty finding a rig that could move it.

Thank you, Dustin. This is the first season of yours that I took weekly with you rather than binging the whole thing. It's been something special. The rig is great. The drone footage this year was your best. While so many will talk about Haida Gwaii, which was by far the most ambitious part of the year, my favorite thing was Bill and Jan living their best lives on the shore of Fishem Lake. I know you can't be lucky enough to come across people like that every week, but it was really inspiring to "meet" them, as it were. I look forward to what's in store. Your content is among the very best on RU-vid. I really appreciate everything you do for us.

Gee, thanks a lot Dustin... I got so cold watching the 2023 closing Destination Adventure video I had to turn up the heat! The light snowfall made the images of the mountains soo dramatic, almost as if filmed in, as the CBC ad said many years ago about the rerunning of the Johnny Weissmüller series Tarzan, glorious black and white. The rig has certainly held up well considering the age and condition of the major components, a sign that preparation and planning will win the day. Take a rest, reconnect with family and friends, give the rig a thorough going over. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Dustin, it'll be a long wait for next season, stay well.

Thank you Dustin, you have done it once again❤💪 I started my day with a cup of coffee and your latest video, it brought a smile to my heart. Always seems to be the perfect recipe for a good day. Thank you for taking us all along on your adventures ❤

Ok❤ as usual - Saturday morning ritual , coffee and Destination Adventure first thing! Then I watch again. Saturdays are busy, but they are much better with DA first. I loved this one. I’ve grown up all over BC, and have never seen caribou like you have! I know I say it lots…..BUT! If you adventure down to the Fraser valley it would be so cool to have a meet and greet sometime!!!! I know hundreds would drive to shake your hand.

I gotta say I really look forward to your videos Dustin. The way the music and imagery flows together. I get so immersed in it that I forget about all the bullshit that’s going on in my life and in the world. Thank you and keep up the amazing work. See you on the next one.

Get yourself a couple easily inflatable beach balls to throw in your boat before you put the cover on. It will prevent the cover from sagging a collecting water and other stuff. A couple large beach balls weigh nothing and stow away very easy.

I've really enjoyed this summer series as you show how beautiful BC is which is my back yard, and your videos have inspired me to explore BC in my retirement. Keep up the great work.

These are my favourite vids, you talking and walking through things makes it very personal. We had a huge laugh about the icicles on the wheel nuts. Keep warm😂

If you push your summer adventure until the pipes freeze I'd say that's a job well done!

Absolutely breathtaking cinematography Dustin. I have been watching your videos for years and your production only gets better. I applaud your skill and admire you positive outlook and how your humanity and empathy shines through. If you are ever in my part of the world, I'd love to buy you a beer and have a natter. From an Aussie down south. Cheers!
