I knew a miner from Ashington. He said “best smell underground was the smell of someone peeling an orange. Worst smell was, someone having a shit on a shovel!”
I remember one bright spark who brought down a wide neck vacuum flask full of fish and chips with plenty of vinegar on it ...... imagine that smell running by you when your are trying to eat your half melted cheese butties ..... Trust me, he never dared do it again !
