Interesting. Newark was where I started my machinist apprenticeship in 1956. Short lived. When the B&O bought a fleet of new diesels, all apprentice programs were cancelled (Jan 58) so I joined the Navy, got into electronics. And Willard was the terminus where Dad and Mom came to pick me up when I returned from ET school (TI Calif) in Jan '59. My LAST real train ride from San Fran to Chi town and down to Willard. Love this video. Id like to take one more ride but Amtrak doesnt go where I need to! Newark , you end up either Cleveland or Cincinnati, then a 3hr rental car drive. LOL

Been wondering about Willard for over a year. Access looks challenging. Was told views only at ends of Yard. Closer trip for me than Fostoria. Boy What a Dip in that one shot toward end! Everything was bouncing hard! Must be a collapsed Tie underneath.

As usual the drone shots enhance the experience. Viewing the yard, I can see where all the auto rack cars have gone. Both CSX trains running side by side are monsters. Railroads have cut back on crews and lengthened the trains.

I have been wondering, with a crappy economy where are all those car carriers going or are they all empty. I remember before they had those metal screens on the side and you could see the cars.

ASRY 3215 ex-NS nee Southern, sold to Progress Rail in 2021. Built as high short hood. ASRY 3505 ex-NS built as Milwaukee Road 200, to Soo 6387, to DME 6387, to Helm 6213, to NS. Appears to have had entire cab and nose replaced in 2014. Both of these sat in the same deadline and had their number boards removed there, hence the new non-NS style ones. ASRY 2027 built as Penn Central 7787 GP38 to CR, to CMNW 2033, to ASRY

Former NS 3215 was rebuilt at Altoona in 2013-2014 with an upgraded Admiral Cab. It is also still sporting the 2014 NMRA National Convention logo on the long hood. Very faded after almost 9 years, but still there

@ScottTaipaleRail
@ScottTaipaleRail Год назад
Steel is generally carried in covered cars here in the USA also. I’m not sure about the quality of the product or end use but the coils that come out of AK Steel’s Mansfield plant are always shipped uncovered. Maybe someone with inside knowledge can chime in with a precise answer.

It's still in use because without it, there would be no method of turning a locomotive. There was a wye track off of the Sandusky main, even after the line was abandoned, the wye was kept in service for several years until it, too, was removed.

@kennydemartini2169

The steel plant in Mansfield, Ohio makes those coils. They are shipped all over the country for automotive, appliances and other industries.
@bb-ov3pi
@bb-ov3pi Год назад
That run looked extremely inefficient where they had to pull on to a main and then back up switch two tracks and then pull forward into the yard when there tracks would only have to cross over the two main lines and go directly into the yard.
@thomasdupee1440
@thomasdupee1440 Год назад
I agree that it's inefficient, but that's the only way for the Ashland Railway to put away their train if the designated arrival track is on the north side of the yard. In this case, their destination is the Block Swap (aka Departure) yard, which was added to the north of the westbound yard in 1999 in anticipation of the additional traffic from the Conrail acquisition.
@way2tired2
@way2tired2 Год назад
That is a LOT of fouling that Ashland Railway train had to do in order to get into the yard. jeez. Forward, backup, change tracks, forward, change tracks.

@@vernontorrence4407 The Ashland Railway was formed after Conrail abandoned most of the Erie Lackawanna. ASRY, at first, took over the former Erie from Creston, OH through Ashland to Mansfield, OH. ASRY later acquired the former B&O Newark line from Willard to Mansfield and connected the two routes using a newly constructed track on the north side of the former PRR main in Mansfield. ASRY has since cut back their former Erie line to terminate at West Salem, OH.
