Controversial retail tycoon Mike Ashley, owner of Sports Direct and House of Fraser, says he is "not Father Christmas" in a combative appearance before Members of Parliament in the United Kingdom.
Ashley attempted to face down his critics in a combative performance before MPs, declaring: "It's not my fault the high street is dying."
Mr Ashley, whose Sports Direct empire swallowed up failed department store chain House of Fraser earlier this year, also warned that he was "not Father Christmas".
But he did say that he was attempting the "godlike" feat of saving 80% of House of Fraser stores while also offering policymakers a prescription to save the wider retail sector.
Mr Ashley's takeover of the 169-year-old House of Fraser chain saved it from administration but has still left the future of thousands of staff in doubt as the billionaire tycoon seeks to slash store rents, in many cases by around half, to keep them afloat.
Suppliers, pensioners, and customers have also been left out of pocket after the pre-pack administration process meant it was left free of liabilities for its new owners.
But Mr Ashley bristled at attempts to present him as a villain as he also batted off controversy about zero-hours contracts - which he said many workers prefer.
"I'm not sitting in my office stroking a white cat," he told MPs on the housing, communities and local government select committee.
The tycoon argued that the retail sector was already on its knees, offering a bleak picture of the future if radical action was not taken - and laying the blame for the gloom squarely on the rise of online retail.
Pressed on whether he would try to keep all 59 House of Fraser stores open, he angrily responded that he had "never, never, never" pledged to do that and indicated that while he was trying to keep open as many as he could, it would be impossible to retain all of them.
"What person could keep 59 stores open, besides God?" he said. "Even keeping 80% of stores open would be a god-like performance."
Mr Ashley insisted that House of Fraser would have to change to survive, ditching "prehistoric" business practices and changing store opening hours - and also floated the idea of working more closely with Debenhams.
In an eye-catching performance, the man behind Sports Direct has unveiled a new plan to tackle Britain’s high street -- a tax on web retailers, to encourage them to keep high bricks-and-mortar outlets running too.
31:24
Under Ashley’s plan, any retailer which did more than 20% of its business online would be hit by the tax.

@paulie-g
@paulie-g 5 лет назад
If non-zero hour contracts were more desirable, then people would choose employers who offer them. If people end up on zero hour contracts, it is either because they prefer them or because they have no other option. The former is not a problem at all, while the latter is not a problem Mike Ashley or any other business owner is responsible for solving. Maybe there aren't enough jobs to go around because the economy is weak, nationally or locally. Maybe the labour force's skills aren't well-matched with the jobs that are available - it seems intuitive that in the 21st century in a high-income country with a mature market economy, there is a much lower maximum limit to the number of people who can be employed doing unskilled work. All of those things may be true, but none of them seem like something a sportswear retailer is best equipped to fix.

I'm glad one person gets it. Yes, it is sad that Amazon have become as powerful as they have, and people should seek alternatives where possible. But has it occurred to anyone that...perhaps not everyone likes shopping? I don't want to go to the 'High Street'. I don't have any interest in it. I like going to restaurants, and for an occasional drink, but I'd rather take my dogs for a walk in the country than poke around some shops. If everyone was like me the 'High Street' would already be dead. Why the fuck would people take the time, effort and expense involved to travel to city centre shops, in order to be presented with a worse choice of products, at worse prices?

I don't think trying to save the highstreet is a bad idea necessarily, it's beneficial for consumers and businesses alike to have one, the problem is it hasn't evolved with the internet world and is simply fading away. It needs to evolve, and I think there's some sensible suggestions here on how to do that.
@JC-qf1jd
@JC-qf1jd 5 лет назад
Its important because there are still a very large quantity of small to large businesses on the "high street" which make up a huge proportion of the contributions to the economy. I have a furniture shop in a town that is being over run with charity shops because they get free or very cheap business rates and rent. The high street is still a very popular place to go for families where lots of money is still spent so its important to look after this with reasonable costs inflicted not exploiting them.
@johnnydavidauthor
@johnnydavidauthor 5 лет назад
@@JC-qf1jd yes, very well said. We have a shop in Shrewsbury and it's so important for people to have places to go that inspire and bring people together. At present, the high street stands to be the only "hub" where people can interact. With all government funding being pulled to other "hubs" there is a systematic dismantling of the connectivity within our society. It's not a good thing that we will all end up locked away in our private lives at the expense of our natural connection to our fellow man. Trading freely is synonymous with the freedom to express ourselves without unreasonable censorship. The honest trade synonymous with the high street is foundational to our way of life. Take that away and our society will break down even more and we will be in the controlling hands of the corporate giants to a far greater degree. God bless. Johnny :-)

The writing has been on the wall for years now. Why would anyone drive into town, get chased by traffic wardens desperate to fine you for going 2 minutes over your time, if you do manage to find a space. Then when you do get to the store you find they don't have what you need because they don't hold much stock, so the range of choice is terrible. Then if you do have a problem or decide you don't like the item when you get home, you have to face the shopkeepers by returning to the shop that are often reluctant to refund face-to-face, rather than online. You can have that or..... order online, sipping your cup of tea, in your own time and have the whole country's range in front of your eyes with the lowest price. If you don't like it when it is delivered, many stores now offer free returns by collection from home or at a very local collect point. You also have more rights buying online. It's a no-brainer sadly.

Fascinating. 100% correct about so many things, the uneven playing field, the web tax, the adaptability, the confession that most were already dead and not dying, the parking issues. All valuable and obvious if you think about it. Most high streets now are charity shops, estate agents, banks and coffee shops. Why would anyone drive or travel by bus to a place to have a coffee and rummage through second hand stuff? Was alarming the daft questions he was being asked. That panel couldn't keep a village newsagent open for more than a week i reckon.

Over 10 years roughly my high street has lost woolworths, hmv, tesco, argos, mcdonalds, blockbuster, burtons, recently marks and spencers, poundworld, 3 mobile store, smyths toys, and few other smaller ones. A travel agency closed recently putting up a sign that after 34 years they are closing the store as rents are too high. All i see is rental opportunity signs now on those empty units. I just dont understand how it is beneficial for the landlords to have these premises being empty. And for council to see that happening and not reacting to the trend is just unbelievable. Mike Ashley makes it very clear to this panel what needs to be done, at least tried to turn things around. Personally i dont want to buy everything over the internet, i want to try the clothes on, i want to try and compare the new technology in stores, but like Ashley said if things are not changed there will be no such option in 2030 in your average towns.

Can I be crystal clear. Why are we trying to save the high street? Driving into towns/cities, sitting in traffic, looking for car parking spots, walking for ages in the rain. All of this is rubbish. Internet shopping is the best. I understand jobs are going to be lost but that's just life. Taxing online shopping is like saying we should double the price of gas and force people to move back to coal fires saving the jobs of the miners.

This is the difference between a guy who is genuine and understands business, Ashley, and pointless politicians who have no concept of value, like their mp salary, want private business to pay for government failure ( why not scrap business rates for businesses in town centres). SDI has no responsibility for a failed business, the first politician is made to look like the complete idiot he is. The second one is asking about trade unions and lives in the 60’s, or pre historic as Ashley says. He’s exactly right they are trying to score political points against him.

If they high street is dead with rows and rows in closed and unoccupied shops, who'll pay (compulsory) business rates? If the councils want to collect business rates, it's also their duty to create a thriving high street.
@thedestroyer3262
@thedestroyer3262 5 лет назад
It amazes me how stupid they are, it's simple you say to businesses "if your online business sales are above 20% of your total sales then you have to pay a 20% tax on that income" no business will want this so they move to the high street but the high street is currently dead so for the first few years the govt has to help retailer bring the high street back to life then after the 5 years of no rates and the money being reinvested into the store is done the high street (if everything goes correctly) should be booming again so the stores will be making enough money to pay the rates and amazing you have fixed your high street problem. We seriously need to get rid of politicians that have no idea what they are doing and replace them with business owners like Mike and start running the country like a business. To become a politician in a specific role(business, taxes, internet, rural and farming, transportation etc) you should need at least 10 years experience in that field and a degree of some kind, stop just letting any random idiot with no knowledge of these things run them! If I can understand this at 19 then surely someone in government can!!!!!

For me, and the business I run where I help failing businesses.. Mike Ashley is far from a perfect man. However he’s completely correct in saying that the system for the high street and the business rates and valuations on commercial rental values in 2018 is completely out of date... all set up and organised in a completely different era of shopping and consumer behaviour.... the Oxford St rental is around 7million per annum.... and the house of Fraser stores that are in places like the Metro Centre are also outdated... there will be many more corrections in these places and more closures..... Mike knows this, like I do. I would love to work with him in educating the government
