(High Quality) Encouraging words from an unlikely source. Someone in Hollywood finally telling our kids (and whoever else is listening) 3 keys: building a life rather than living one, find your opportunities, and always be sexy.

She's just a kid. Maybe her dad is a roofer and she felt a connection. Don't expect 13 year olds to be mature. Becoming mature is a process. Trust that the word she heard will produce wisdom in time. I believe practically every person there gained something from hearing Kutcher's words, and despite the infatuation screams, I heard them all clearly.

I have shown this to my class of struggling math students for the past two years on the first day of class. This spring, a girl came to me to say good-bye as she is moving to another district. She had changed since I first met her nearly 2 years ago. She had been a loud-mouthed, know-it-all, won't-do-any-schoolwork-because-I'm-going-to-be-on-welfare-like-my-mom 14-year-old. She now had goals. She was joining the police junior explorers group with a plan of going to the Police Academy after high school. Her grades in 10th grade were really good. After she gave me this update, she told me that part of what helped her to change was this Ashton Kutcher video. It didn't hit home right away, but she had pulled it up and watched it several times since then and started changing her thinking about herself and her future. She had also told other people to watch it. Thank you, Ashton. At least one teenager's life has been changed, in part, by your speech.

@tinagorgos9736
@tinagorgos9736 8 лет назад
+AllstateIts Inyourhands Really? Like what? Do you know this student? What race was she? She was loud. She did act like a know-it-all (at first).. She actually told me that her plan after high school was to be on welfare like her mom. It does not matter what color this student is. That was her in 9th grade. She changed her 'plan' and, I think, her new plan was a better one. If you think all kids who could be described in this fashion belong to just one or two races, you are blind to the world we live in. Maybe your are the one with racial issues.

Let's just review what he said... and then review your comment. Was this comment intelligent, generous, or thoughtful? You, just like those screaming girls, react. You're human, you've been conditioned into certain societal beliefs. They've been told that Ashton is great, they love him, and they're screaming in adoration. You've been told that teenage girls who show enjoyment in something deserved to be mocked and ridiculed. That because they're screaming, the message isn't sinking in. I'm going to believe that your comment was a knee-jerk reaction to the situation at hand, and I'm going to give those screaming girls the same benefit of the doubt.
@GryphonHall
@GryphonHall 10 лет назад
cleodel88 I am not sure which planet or dimension your frame of reference is based on, but in this reality if someone screaming their heads off at 150 decibels, there is no way they can be hearing anything else. Try it. And if they are not hearing anything else, how can they understand what they are saying? Try it. Try screaming while listening to a school lecture. Try screaming your head off in the middle of the climax of a detective movie. Try screaming just when the hero confesses to the love of his life in a movie and tell me that you can hear what is being said. Did you notice Ashton try hard to top off the screams? Raise his hand, trying to finish his thought? Do you think it was respect for Ashton, the person, who is now, at this moment, trying to communicate, when they ignored his body language? Or were they just slavishly showing the trendy "way" of adoration for an image created by Ashton's roles? Now, let's examine and review your reply: wasn't this also just a reaction to my reaction? Go ahead and give them (the "screaming girlies") the benefit of the doubt (who knows: they might watch this video someday, when the advice is hopefully not too late). But do not make any assumptions about the motives of my "reaction", or assume it is merely a "knee-jerk" response. FYI, your assumption about why my comment is phrased that way is incorrect. I am not even going to speculate as to why you think my "reaction" is any less valid than theirs was.

@ssyp20
@ssyp20 10 лет назад
Or perhaps that's just a way to tell that they're listening. You can't be loud and be able to fully understand what someone is saying. His words meant so much. Some people don't comprehend things the way you or I might. Everyone's been through different experiances, therefore everyone has different reactions. Some of this generation, my generation, is a bit messed up. I agree with you. It's up to the people that are older, that are our rolemodels, to guide us in the right path.
@drumjod
@drumjod 10 лет назад
You have a point, Brandon. Many teenagers get excited about issues that aren't important in the grand scheme of things. Do you remember being a teenager? What would you have cheered for? What can we do as adults to make things better? The next generation is a product of our generation. We can inspire them but we should not force them.

+Niamh Dillon It's not sad it's the entire point and you are completely missing it. He made his career on being a braindead idiot. For christ sake he got into acting BECAUSE OF MODELING. When is the last time you heard anything substantial come out of the mouth of a model? So this guy rides on his looks for like 10 years then stops and goes "hey, wait guys, I'm not just a pretty face I'm actually smart and you should listen to me." Oh, sorry, what, I was just watching the clip of you setting a boat on fire. What now, so, you want to be taken seriously and considered intelligent? Got it. As soon as you stop knocking over christmas trees and pretending to repo celebs' things we'll start taking you seriously. What a gigantic tool.

I had just turned 13 when he said this and in a turning point in my life where I was stuck in a rut and felt like I didn’t matter and that I wouldn’t achieve anything because I wasn’t as pretty as other girls. The night this came out, I suddenly felt inspired to go out and not worry about my appearance, but instead live my life and work on bettering myself. I’m now approaching adulthood and even 5 years later, I still come back to this speech and listen to what Ashton has to say. He made a brilliant point

This speech is the best and for all the teen girls screaming, not evening listening to these inspirable words, is the most rudest thing ever. Show some respect. Smh.

Ryley Whitaker Ikr! It frustrates me to no end. The only reason I'm glad I wasn't there is because I would have ripped all their heads off and then they would drag me out of the place and I wouldn't get to listen to his amazing speech.

I have never been a fan of Ashton Kutcher and this speech changed my opinion, He is so right about work. A lot of people take the easy way out and that's not the best way, work pays off and teaches you

I feel that Ashton wanted to emulate in a way the steve jobs standford speech, I'm guessing he made a research on him for his role in the Jobs movie so he might have felt inspired by him, and the steve jobs reference at the end just make me belive this even more

I know right! He's an actor so I guess that helped him deliver it just like Jobs (kinda like the way Ronald Reagan was an actor and gave very charismatic speeches)

Transcript: What’s up? Oh wow. Okay, okay, let’s be brutally honest -- this is the old guy award. This is like, this is like the grandpa award, and after this I gotta go to, like, the geriatric home. Um, first of all, um, I don’t have a career without you guys. I don’t get to do any of the things I get to do without you. Um, you know, I thought that, uh, -- hi -- I thought that it might be interesting…. You know In Hollywood and in the industry and the stuff we do, there’s a lot of, like, insider secrets to keeping your career going, and a lot of insider secrets to making things tick. And, uh, I feel like a fraud. Uh, my name is actually not even Ashton. Ashton is my middle name. My first name’s Chris. And, and, it always has been. It got changed when I was like 19 and I became an actor, but there are some really amazing things that I learned when I was Chris, and I wanted to share those things with you guys, because I think it’s helped me be here today. So, it’s really 3 things. The first thing is about opportunity. The second thing is about being sexy. And the third thing is about living life. So first, opportunity. I believe that opportunity looks a lot like hard work. When I was 13 I had my first job with my Dad carrying shingles up to the roof, and then I got a job washing dishes at a restaurant, and then I got a job in a grocery store deli, and then I got a job in a factory sweeping Cheerio dust off the ground. And I’ve never had a job in my life that I was better than. I was always just lucky to have a job, and every job I had was a stepping stone to my next job and I never quit my job until I had my next job. And so opportunities look a lot like work. Number two, being sexy. The sexiest thing in the entire world, is being really smart. And being thoughtful. And being generous. Everything else is crap, I promise you. It’s just crap that people try to sell to you to make you feel like less, so don’t buy it. Be smart, be thoughtful, and be generous. The third thing is something that I just re-learned when I was making this movie about Steve Jobs. And Steve Jobs said when you grow up you tend to get told that the world is the way that it is, and that your life is to live your life inside the world and try not to get in too much trouble, and maybe get an education and get a job and make some money and have a family, but life can be a lot broader than that when you realize one simple thing, and that is that everything around us that we call life was made up by people that are no smarter than you, and you can build your own things, you can build your own life that other people can live in. So build a life. Don’t live one, build one. Find your opportunities, and always be sexy. I love you guys.

one thing i want to point out to everyone, especially those people who are commenting on the kids screaming. All of that doesnt matter. if one teenager gets it, if one person in the whole audience got the message, among the shouting and screaming, if it resonated WITH ONE PERSON, and that one person doesnt become discouraged by people like you nay sayers. it was worth all the screaming in the world.

Hey Brandon Meyers! Personally this is one of my favorite speeches I think everyone should know about! That being said, there's lots of people that rely on captioning in videos, and these captions just need a little tiny bit revising. Some things like "Grand Ball" instead of grandpa (0:37) and "build 15 your..." when it's really build one, find your... (4:34) Again, such an amazing video, everyone should have access to Ashton's amazing message!

I mean yeah, the "WE LOVE YOU"s and "WOOOO"s seem the product of starstruck prepubescent silly putty brains. But let's face it: that's exactly what everyone in that audience expected to do. Nobody knew Kutcher would get up there and deliver a really sober speech. And frankly, by the end of it, most everyone had quieted down and started paying attention--even if they probably still wanted to synchronize yell "TAKE IT OFF!"...they didn't; they listened. I'm impressed by him for damn sure...and I think the audience eventually got it, too.

Appreciate that he is actually giving some good advice when compared to his counterparts. It doesn't matter if you think if he is a good actor or not. It doesn't matter if he strung up some cliches. What matters is that his message came from deep thought and he delivered it at a good time. So appreciate it brother.
