The Thanjavur Maratha Palace Complex, known locally as Aranmanai, is the official residence of the Bhonsle family who ruled over the Tanjore region from 1674 to 1855. Thanjavur Maharaj Serfoji's Saraswathi Mahal Library is one among a few libraries in the world with texts of the medieval period. The Durbar hall is current used as sculpture museum with beautiful stone sculptures from Chola period. Bell tower is situated in the Northwestern side of the Arsenal Tower. The gallery houses a treasured collection of bronze icons, stone sculptures and other artifacts, which today stand testimony to that golden age in Tamil history. The library has added an audio-visual hall where a documentary on Thanjavur is being screened every day.
