Asia's Lost Generation: The Hidden Cost Of COVID-19 On Philippines' Youth | Insight | Full Episode

For almost 2 years since the COVID-19 outbreak began in Philippines, schools in the Philippines have shut their doors to students. Children are kept mostly at home and classes have resumed through distance learning. But with no access to the necessary devices and uneven internet connections, many of the students have missed out on their education.
Last year alone, around two million students dropped out of school. Poverty has also forced many of the children to take up illegal and often dangerous jobs to help their families cope with the economic impact of the health crisis. How can these children be helped? What would it take for the Philippine government to save these children before it’s too late?

That's the norm in places like this. it's not uncommon to drive around the Philippines and see kids under the age of 9 peddling a bike with a sidecar full of scrap metal while holding their youngest sibling (Who is maybe 2-3 years old) on busy city streets. What's more messed up is that if you enforce child labor laws to "protect" them and keep their "innocence" you're just gonna kill that entire family faster. If only the adults work the entire family might not be able to eat.

The problem in the Philippines is that there are many less privileged, challenged people. The government officials and local government unit can be corrupt and don’t do their assigned jobs properly(not saying all of them but some or maybe most of them). The less privileged people and some teens just makes more babies and say having an accidental baby is a “blessing”. It is only a blessing if it was planned and both couple/parents are ready to have their own family. That is why many people are suffering from poverty because many people do not plan making their family. Then they blame everything to the government and if there are people doing better than them they want to pull others down. #crabmentality 🦀 I feel sorry for the challenged people but some of the people just make their own problems. Didn’t comment here to debate. Just giving my opinion ✌🏻

You got your facts straight. Thank you. Cause God knows pinoys dislike pointing the finger at themselves or looking at the mirror. When innocent mouths and soul are born there is an obligation to give the best chance for children, a home health and future. But statistically pinoy families like having plenty of children with little money to go around. The Jeepney drivers collecting Ayuda in Commonwealth QC complaining the 4000 PHP Ayuda is KULANG because he has 4 kids and a wife to feed.... Pare, the problem isn't covid, the problem is your life choices (aswell as the other men and women in the millions who chose this path). August 2019, social emergency on teen pregnancies... HINT HINT. Too bad pinoys lack critical thinking to understand this It's just BAHALA NA!!!!

Our neighboring countries, especially the rich Asian nation such as China, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, India are experiencing record breaking suicide recorded deaths. Some students can afford a mobile phone for online learning but internet connection is one of the problems, no stable connection and even after almost 2yrs in the pandemic there is no improvement in bandwidth or whatsoever. It affects both that are learning online and those who managed to work at home.
@infinitrixtv5847
@infinitrixtv5847 2 года назад
I agree, but there might be some good changes coming up. I think Converge is teaming up with Elon Musk's Starlink for a connection directed by a satellite, but there might be so many factors, in which if they piled up (one that includes some unforeseen circumstances, such as typhoons, earthquakes, and hard to reach places could pose threat to the speed and bandwidth). If those places were remote, it could also affect the latency. However, I am still hopeful that Philippines will still be a great nation. We are slowly moving virtually, and perhaps we could use our massive virtual presence to something fruitful.

Oh they know.. like everything else.. BUT when the total income tax paying populous is low, a direct tax which is the #1 form of revenue for this country (while other countries are taxed higher and receive much more from the masses) how can you invest across the board in each sector / program (even programs that help the millions of poor, and even the SUBSIDIZED gas money for Jeepney drivers as of yesterday) when there is not ENOUGH budget to help the 110 million people here? You see, this is where MOST pinoys fail to understand and the reason why POPULATION control / reproductive health care was BEGGED by all past administrations including the Marcos days in the 70s to control population growth because it was rising exponentially faster than economic growth. This and your comment on education (lack of budget /focus) is a direct result of that. People decided to Anak pa more with wlang pera without a good financial foundation from the onset... A cycle from 60 years ago. This is the same for healthcare... Available hospital beds are for a population of 65 million!!!!!

Someone should develop a basic universal educational system that allow people to learn the basics of survivability in the present state of society. The basics of English, Maths, Biology, Health, and Financial. I guess it's hard without internet though. Internet should be everywhere by now. Someone should also make some kind of universal internet system. The internet is basically a world of knowledge that everyone should have access to. It probably could be considered a human right. It is really tough to actually implement that, but what Elon Musk will do with his Starlink will be so revolutionary in the 7 to 10 years, and that could actually improve the speed of the internet and make it available to everyone regardless of how remote your place is. Also, I hope we can actually make use of our heads, we are merely relying to technology, we should find ways to actively engage our minds with the tools (technology) that enhances it, not in the same that is harmful or a liability to the ones who own it. Also, we haven't put our priority or focus on the sciences and mathematics: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and teaching our youth how to be financially literate. I think what stagnates our society is the cycle of mistakes that we repeatedly do, and multiply those who rely on alms and monetary aids. In short, we are causing more problems. We only give them a fish to live a day, but they never know how to catch their own fish.

The Congress passed the Reproductive Health Law which will provide these people access to contraceptives and other family planning methods for FREE and sex education to teenagers, but the entire country went crazy and immediately challenged the law and asked that it be nullified. Parents can't provide for their children and they still want more. The breadwinners suffer and children are their retirement fund. I am a breadwinner myself and I fund my brother's tuition. Sadly for these kids, they will become their own breadwinner. The cycle continues and if they haven't learn, their offspring will have the same path. The story downplayed efforts by civic individuals and Non- government organizations, even if the situation is the same. There are efforts to empower the people so that they don't end up as their "statistics" show. The culture here is "what doesn't kill you will only make you stronger" as anywhere in the world in this situation. It's only such through portrayal without balanced sides presented that something intended to be good becomes a poison to those who they seek to cure. It will only plant in the mind of the Filipino youth ,the seed of the "culture of victim mentality"... Now that is not the result or effect we want ,would we?

Unbelievable but if it helps, hope it will. Actually possible sources of youth suicidal in first world countries are bullying, parents violence and bullying to the youth. Solution 1: Lockdowns should vary in every region depending on the vaccine rate and the severity of the infection. Solution 2: Create a home school program for kids without the need for technology (The internet is not needed, books are). Once the virus has been eliminated and the kids are ready to go back to school, the kids can take assessment tests so they can easily integrate into the school system. Remember used books doesn't cost as much. *That is not a learning crisis but rather the lack of proper government implementation. Solution 3: Another solution would be to create loan centres for laptops, computers and cellphones that can be borrowed by students.

This episode is a bit biased. They are showing only a tip of the iceberg and overemphasized it. Not going to school is not the problem but the quality of education provided. My son used to go to one of the tap schools in Isabela but as a parent i am not happy about the fact that my son have good grades because answers were provided prior to exams to maintain a good grading system. Politics is now a bane rather a boon for the majority of the Filipinos. Filipinos are fighters and survivors. So is it better to have a large family and hope quality jobs can be created by the people? Or should man and woman family plan and then decide based on income how many kids they should have? That said, what part of corruption is involved in family decisions? Wait... August 2019 Philippines declared Social Emergency on Teen Pregnancies......... Is this a product of corruption too?

So the farmers have no choice but to get some loans in banks or private loan business to buy new seeds to plants. However many of the farmers dont get that much either because after selling all of their harvest plants they only brought in cheaper price by market sellers so many of them are huge debt and because of that some of the farmers land been taken by banks or being force to sold
