Growing up in a white suburb in Texas, I got more "cred" if I made racist jokes about my own people and make fake Thai accents. They would then say things like "wow you're not very Asian" and I would feel soooo good about it. 10 Years later I realized it was fucked up and now I'm chasing my lost roots.
Even among whites, European immigrants and white Americans don't really become friends too much. Europeans have told me that they just aren't the same.
I see white Americans bad mouthing Eastern Europeans the most. My guess is Eastern European, are extremely religious and preserve their language and doesn't assimilate that much into the Anglo society. So they are often looked down more.
On the flip side growing up in the Bay, I felt out of place as an ABC when I was in a space with more international asians (old and young) such as work or international Chinese dominated spaces. They would treat me as if I was less than them because I grew up in America and not "Chinese" enough because I couldn't speak Chinese as well as them. So it really can go both ways
In my experience, me being not as Chinese as them is a bit endearing, the same way they view ABC celebrities, such as Michael Wong, Edison Chen, Vanness Wu, Leehom Wang, etc.
nah I know Im the real deal, people think so as well. I speak shit chinese, but they still love me lol. culture and language helps a lot. My accent is so bad
Not saying this wouldn't occur - but I would say this situation is probably not as common as the other way around in college at least (In my experience and according to what many of my other friends have experienced independently).
I was a FOB back then and my younger cousin is a ABC. I experienced this kind of treatment while we were in the same high school and her friends bullied me. I asked for my parents’s help and she did not admit that her friends were bullying me and other FOBs. This shit thing is for real, even if they are your close ones or relatives…
The fact is the FOBs don't like Asian Americans too. The FOBs today are very different from the FOBs in the past, nowadays they usually from a relatively rich background, anything you can get from the US they can get from their hometown as well, and they see Asian Americans as the "middle man" or people who has no real connection to both sides.
If you see how korean born americans are treated in Korea.. the smiles just leave a lot of peoples faces especally the older gen.. you tell them you’re chinese, Japanese.. OH even worse.. but not born in Asia.. they always kinda see you as a traitor lol.. which i don’t mind. I could gaf about this opinion - and its a trait fro teh west i think most of us really benifit vs asia.. it is why asia really tries to emulate certain western american things but it just comes off contrive… its cause thast not how they were raised.. not to think The fobs that are super chill are the ones that are able to really embrace it that they come off as being born in america, etc.. aka.. that elitism is gone
It's not just the Asian ethnicities you two mentioned. This happens in other Asian ethnicities too such as Hmong. I've experienced quite a few incidents where US born Hmong folks clown on Thailand or Laos born Hmongs.
I always wanted to befriend international students because I always wanted to learn about their cuisine. This would work 100% of the time. They could see I sincerely was interested and loved their cuisine. Thus, food was our connection even if we didn’t have anything else in common. You always have to eat.
Competition (perceived or real) is another reason for the animosity between ABCs and foreign born Asians. It's similar to American born Hispanics being resentful against recent migrants from across the southern border, I think.
I think it goes back to how Asian parents raised us. If i saw another Asian person who looks like they came from money i just think "Oh great.. more competition" like you said in a previous video there's no sense of community cause we see everyone else as an obstacle not a friend at least at first.
@manseebarik5295 The reason I get along with immigrants in America is because they are not brainwashed. They don't watch the news or American TV. They don't trust our government. They are not on drugs or anti-depressants. The immigrants' minds are clear and level-headed. They are hard-working, conservative, common sense people. It's nothing I do, but rather the quality of their character.
@@Markiplier3243 Not really because I don't do anything special. I act the same way as I relate to any American. I am only polite and respectful. It's not what I do, it's the good character of the immigrants that makes a difference. I have heard of bad immigrants, but I have not met them.
Having dated a fob aka chinese immigrant I had no negative conceptions of her. I did notice large cultural differences. I was more into pda and she definitely was not, heck according to her, she didn't even hug friends nor family. And a lot of her media consumption was more media generated from mainland Asia as opposed to Hollywood here. Besides things like that, she was incredibly smart, beautiful and easy to get along with. Pretty much a normal person aside from differences in cultural upbringing
the pda thing is just u. it's not a cultural difference. A lot of fobs like pda and a lot of americans don't and vice versa. I wouldn't even say pda is more common in one over the other. I've seen it occur in equal amounts in both cultures.
@@DapperArtImagery In New York it is not uncommon to experience fobs doing pda. Ig you californians being in a car stuck in mad traffic all day exposes you to less shit. Also when I mentioned American culture, I wasn't thinking about wmaf I was thinking about Asian americans primarily, and the pda culture is about the same.
@@abccafe1a, when i was in korea i was litearlly watching kdramas in front f my eyes LOL the good and the bad.. teh silent staring at each other angry fight while the guy had a bunch of flowers in his hands.. So agree the pda things is just him 😂
Difference of lifestyles, it’s like how the cool kids will not hang out with the nerdy kids. Most FOBS keep to themselves and are studious/nerdy. Usually a language barrier as well.
This is a pretty unfortunate situation as we're already minorities in this country and yet we deny/attack each creating a larger barrier that separate us apart.
In my personal experience, being 2nd-Gen and coming from a very mixed family if I include my aunts, uncles, & cousins, it really depends on how connected you are to the foreign culture when you're American-born. Even though you might be American, if you grew up with the culture present around you, the food, language, music, TV shows, etc., you will have no problem relating to people from your family's country of origin. In my family, we have German, Mexican, Korean, and African, and although we were all born in the U.S. for my generation, we all are well connected to our respective roots because we grew up with the cultures around us. It's also the beauty of Southern California. It's very mixed racially out here. You grow up feeling part of many cultures.
I have never really understood this. As an ABC myself, I get along much better with HKers and Taiwanese than fellow ABCs. I also try to retain as much of my Chinese side as possible by speaking the language, absorbing the media, patronizing Chinese businesses, taking frequent trips to Asia, etc.
It amazes me how so many of these Asian experiences don't apply to me much, even though I'm an American born Vietnamese. I grew up in Orange County CA during the 90s. Growing up, majority of the student population was Vietnamese born, so none of us tried to fit in with the White or Mexican crowds (The two other largest demographics in the area). The amount of ABVs in my generation you could count on one hand, so FOB's were were often the ones being mean towards ABVs. The ones that did it the most were the ones that came over at an age when they were almost or were already adults. Same with my extended family on my dad's side. My siblings and I were the only ones that were American born. So we were also ostracized, not just from our peers, but our extended family as well. From my own experience, the most common reason we couldn't get along with many FOB's was because almost every single one we met embraced the most toxic aspects of our culture, like abusing the collective familial piety mindset of our culture to take advantage of others and fulfill their narcissistic desires; Obsession with career, money and status to the point of having no personality or interests beyond eating out and showing off your material wealth; and worst of all is viewing abuse as an acceptable form of behavior. I know not all FOB's are like this obviously, because I've met a few of them. But it feels kind of difficult to not generalize when they literally tell me to my face that I'm weird and not really Vietnamese when I don't share these traits with them.
Same! I grew up in SoCal and I don't feel like this is extremely relatable. At my high school there wasn't really any tension between these two groups and quite a few of my asian friends in high school grew up in China, Vietnam, Cambodia, or the Philippines before coming to the US. I didn't really see much of a divide then, but I did notice it more in university. In my experience, I noticed more of a divide based on economic class. Rich Asians from Asia often reflected those toxic cultural traits you pointed out and that doesn't sit well with a lot of Americans in general. As for sorority ABC though, they're just extremely clique-ish, they hate everyone not in their inner circle.
Canadian here same thing.. i think maybe this happens if there is massive social economic differences.. majority of us were middle class not really upper middle upper at most.. just normal.. black, asian, Muslim, etc.. litearlly no one had a problem .. especially in public school.. white kids were rare in our area.. but our teachers were white.. and no one even though about race.. everyone made fun of each other.. we go to each other houses.. played hokey ( lol ya canadian stereotypes are true).. In highschool same thing.. BUT.. when the fobs came in.. is where you did see they looked down on use cause they were RICH>. Like RICHHHH.. so they would hang out with the rich kinds.. but again.. no one cared.. laughed.. enjoyed life.. didn’t really let things bother us.. When racial divid did happen is when we met older black friends at anime cons who started to bring in race politics.. and ya thats when things started crumbling.. But in general.. no one really hated anyone.. there was a fob in our friend group RICH BUT she was nice.. cause she really want’ fobby. She was rich and had a very rich boyfriend and made him drive us around and pay for our meals lol.. But even in adult life.. again.. theres really no issue.. maybe im america its more hot topic.. but from my experience in the heart of canada sespool… its not racist.. peopel are chill including new immigrants and students.. again.. maybe again, certain countries attract certain personalities.. but canada attracts very chill ‘ cool headed’ Of course we have of nut cases but ya.. thast my experience. Of course there is racism.. but in general.. everyone kinda minded their own businesses.. and the fobs want to just hang around each other.. cause we poor.. lol.. no problem. Didn’t want to hang around them either. BUT the poorer fobs.. were the ones that were teaching us how to gamble 😂😂😂 play all these card games, etc.. I think social economic status is the biggest factor
@@Fife178see.. economic class.. this is what i think it comes down to.. abc i think in general when compared to international students especally from china.. the china ones are beyond insanely wealthy.. driving their sports cars.. vs you have American students eating cooked noodles made with an iron😂..
you see that’s the common mentality of Asians who either don’t have a family member sending them money from the u.s or the fell for anti American propaganda that considers Asian Americans traitors in Asian countries America got involved in
one of the worst ones are the new fobs though these days they can come over here if they have money and typically having money means you aligned with the communist and take the propaganda to heart these types really look down on asian Americans especially the ones you don’t succeed economically
Me personally as Asian American with learning disability and Autism I feel ABC are more accepting for people like me. Not to say FOB aren’t many of them are depending how they grew up. They are lots of Asian Americans who work at Special Needs programs that help people with disabilities. Which also is great because they can understand the struggle many Asian Americans with Disabilities are going through. Since in some Asian cultures having a disability is something to look down upon.
It has a lot to do with the negative stereotypes that international students face. ABC’s don’t normally want to be associated with fobs as it makes it harder to fit in and be a part of “Western” college culture (greek life, other social scenes etc)
Exactly, this mentally of wanting to fit into white culture and society is pathetic. Show some Asian pride and lift up your fobby Asian sisters and brothers @@supa3ek
I live in Orange County and I feel like the internationals that got to settle here in recent years are feeling more entitled. I get looks like im less of an asian cus I dont dress all fob. Its sad
The “elevator etiquette” thing you mentioned makes me LOL…I mean, what the heck is up with that?? I’ve noticed it many times. I was once a young FOB too, and I know I have never behaved so cluelessly like that. I guess we must’ve been among the “not rich enough” class in my home country...?
Honestly i think this is the real thing.. it’s not fob vs abc.. it’s rich vs poor.. even if you’re not poor but to their standards.. driving lambo living in penthouses.. ya we’re poooor.. lol so cultural difference.. ya.. poor vs rich life is really difference. Which i think is why fobs and abc that are usually middle lass etc. seem to have no problem.. most of the problems i ever saw or experience was we were so insanely poor compared to the fobs who wouldn’t hang out with us If my other fob fired that was rich but not mansion owning lambo rich LOL. Then my brother who had rich fob friends.. but my brother looks like an idol.. was invited to a party… rich people only party in hongkong.. like you need to have a certain income to get int ( insane).. and he said a lot of them were ok but did see he wasn’t rich but they met another random rich guy but he looked like a. Bum.. asked if they wanted to chill at his home.. they end up going up Victoria peak.. into a massive mansion condo.. and he said the guys entire house was like glass.. you could see thorugh the toilet and there was a crocodile mat on the floor the guy was so rich. BUT he was so happy to have new friends to talk to.. so even among the insanely rich there’s s a hierarchy - that rich guy wasn’t RICH enough to socialize at a millionaire club.. So i think it comes down to economics and how open are people Man, i wish he still had the guys contact.. and the girl he met.. they said they would fly him anywhere he wants and stuff.. damn. It.. lol now we’re back to poor cbc lol
Some fobs don't care and are just straight rude. I seen several times at my work fobs click their fingers at the wait staff to get their attention. It almost ended up in a fight in one occasion. I often do my best to from one Asian to another kindly explain to them that isn't something you should do to get people's attention. I also get that in some places in China that is the norm but a lot of these fobs didn't want to hear my advise and often dismissed.
American culture is more delicate. Real Zhong guo ren / Chinese abuse service workers with yells and insults as that is the culture of China. There is no tipping. Under communist culture, you can abuse underlings as much as you want. In China, the waiters ignore you until you yell at them to move. You need to yell " service person, do this ! " in Mandarin before they leave their chair. Many Asian cultures operate under brutality , such as Korean culture. Just watch s.Korean movies and see how they abuse each other routinely.
I'm a FOB who came to the US at a very young age. Yeah, many ABCs were not very welcoming but more so in middle school. I think there was a class difference. As adults, we were more the same than different. Nowadays, I am not against the new FOBs, but disappointed that many of them do not care or respect what early Asian Americans sacrificed and fought for to achieve more equality in this country... and the rights they enjoyed now.
It take me 15 years to get used to Canada and the way people that are born here think so if someone is from another country, try to understand and teach them the way of your life. I remember find the word “ouch” being strange but it grows on me as I live in Canada.
I think canada is a bit different but ya.. a lot of stuff is just cultural misunderstanding. Someone from china or whatever.. ( lets not talk about the insanely rich fobs) don’t’ get jobs.. don’t’ understand sarcasm etc.. because its not their culture.. its not their language.. People in canada like to joke and jab each other.. it’s a way to show you like someone.. someone that doesn’t understand this will feel offended.. Just liek you said.. you didn’t kow what ouch meant til you learnt it.. jus like someone doesn’t kow what AIIYAAA means 😂😂 As long as you’re open you’re not so insanely rich, theres really no problem haha.
the csa at the college i went to interestingly had majority if not all international students. they would speak in mandarin only meanwhile the small amount of abc students that existed spoke canto. but the international students didn't care about this and just assumed the abc students weren't "in touch with their culture". not to mention, there was a huge class difference between the domestic asian students and the international students, where most of the chinese international students were literally there just to experience it, some of them driving up in lambos with multiple chanel purses in their closet. they would rarely study and usually just hung out in each other's dorms, rarely interacting with anyone else, much less the abc students. campus was mostly white, and multiple times there were white profs or students who would shame the 2nd or 3rd gen asian students for not being asian enough, specifically comparing them to the international students because the school prided itself on having a huge population of them. this caused a lot of friction, especially because majority of the domestic asian students were on low income scholarships and didn't have the luxury of giving a sh*t about how "asian" they were or whatever. there were also debates about politics, where my friend whose parents grew up in vietnam was and still is enraged by this viet girl who talked positively about vietnam, insisting that vietnam is not the same as it was post war but my friend took it as her insulting her parents' struggles. i think people's experiences depends on who is the majority tbh.
People don’t seem to realize a lot of abc and friends are not rich asian.. the parents just save all the money for education.. asians are actaully sometimes most times poorer than the black students. But yea.. it’s economic class more than anything.. most rich people won’t hang around poor people.. it’s jsut a fact.. the few that do are cool but its harder for a poor kid to join a rich kids club vs the rich kid joining the poor people club. The whole ‘ not in tune with culture crap is just excuses.. the real reason is social class
The schism between ABCs and Asian FOBs, as well as other ethnic minority groups is completely different from the schism between Black Americans and African FOBs. We were not immigrants, rather the descendants of American slaves, and were here at the very foundation of America. Hence, why many of us started using the acronyms ADOS (American descendants of slavery) or FBA (foundational Black Americans). For my own part, I never had problems with African immigrants and consider them friends. Generally, I'm team FOB because I hate most Americans LOL. But African FOBs need to stay out of Black issues, because they have no say in our 400yr.+ old community.
If you act, dress, speak, and think like an American who is out of touch with their culture, you already have less to offer. It’s jealousy. Plain and simple… but please keep reading. As a hapa raised around my Asian family AND my American family I have to start by saying this: if you aren’t in touch with your roots, you will always feel some type of way about the people who are set in their identity. That’s not to say that an ABC or an ABG CAN’T be in touch with their roots (and be sure in their identity), but the girls who have this issue likely aren’t going to get along with FOB girls. Feeling threatened socially usually means that an individual has their own insecurity. Identity is a LARGE part of how we view ourselves socially, and any insecurities surrounding that issue are capable of extending to other aspects of your life. Keep your head up. Those that genuinely dislike you are only doing so because they feel threatened by your pride and security of identity.
This is thr US not Asia or other countries. If a foreigner visited an Asia country, have yo follow their own rules. When foreigners and illegals needs to follow the US constiturion.
@to04buk bring up one of the main reason (I can’t tell if its just a joke, or a serious comments)………. but MANY MANY ABCs or CBCs HATE their FOB parents, BUT they can’t outright “put down” their parents and act superior in front of the parents…… cuz usually people want to be at least outwardly nice to the “hand that feeds them”… so.. the hate for their FOB parents becomes a secret hate in front the parents, but that hate is transferred to the FOB peers……………..the language barriers makes things worst and the misunderstandings just pile up very quickly.
Of course there needs to be some balance. You shouldn't have to acquiese too much of what makes you Asian just to fit better into a supposedly multi cultural society. I see it happen all too often on college campuses across this country. And on the flip side, a person who is new to this American way of life shouldn't be so adamant about not fully integrating.
Historically the main reason had to with assimilation. There was a sense of superiority because fitting into Western culture was "cool". You'd be surprised with globalism today it affects even the youth in China or Japan. We used to and to a lesser extent now, be treated better in Taiwan for e.g. In recent times if you encounter the noveau riche from the mainland don't be surprised if they dish it back by looking down on you. Some of them haven't forgotten. I'm basically a good mix of both sides so I get insight and while the animosity is far less today the groups don't tend to mix due to cultural differences so I hang with them separately.
@@kn2549 All of EA is influenced by American culture and especially media. You won't tell at a glance by some random teen or young adult. Not until you hang around clubs, skating, breakdancing and hip hop scenes. You have people speaking in AAVE when they haven't even been to America.
@@iimmortalldreams Umm…no? Clubbing, skating, breakdancing and hip hop is nowhere near mainstream or perceived as being “cool” here in Japan. Why would a Japanese person randomly start talking in AAVE in Japan? Majority of the people here cant even speak English to begin with. And why do you think the youth, out of all age groups in Japan, are mostly affected by it? If anything, the post war baby boomers that are senior citizens today are often stereotyped with being obsessed with American culture.
just came across this. I have been here for more than 30 years, you guys covered it pretty well and I totally agree. But back then I remember the hurt was real. Now I could tell my younger self, it's not all what you thought. People are just people. I also agree that ABC perhaps should share more of the burden and be better ambassadors. That's why I told both of my kids, when they were going to college, pay attention to fobs, be nice and be inclusive ❤❤
I think the beef between FOBs and Asian Americans comes from several reasons. It can be cultural differences, language barrier or elitist attitude. I've experienced this elitist attitude from a workplace were my work friend introduced me to a Filipino contractor , who is American born, and said "Yes, I am Filipino but I'm born here". My co-worker was shocked by the attitude and so was I. Left him alone after that encounter and went about my business. Makes me wonder if this attitude is common among American born Asians.
I'm glad you guys are doing at lot of different topics. It would be nice if you had more guests on your show. Like back when you guys were on the streets asking random people questions and their take on the subject. Even though most of those topics where just for fun. Like when you were on St Marks near union square.
My experience with ABC or ABK are mostly strange. For unknown reasons, they always feel I do not know many things or not belong to this country, even though I am a U.S. citizen too and have been living in this country for more than 2 decades. Of course, I won't shy away if there is any confrontation, but just don't know why they feel so superior than naturalized citizens😮
People in general will ALWAYSSSS find something to make another set of people feel inferior to them. & Agreed Asians DON'T play when it comes to calling out a "Fob" !
Americans of Asian ancestry are NOT Asian Immigrants. Both are different peoples by mental configuration. I know several African immigrants from Uganda, Kenya. They are totally different that Afro Americans and do not mix with them. Real Africans are actually conservative, are married, both spouses are employed. They despise welfare and do not understand slave reparations as they were never descended from slaves. Real Africans even say Afro Americans would be considered foreigners as they are actually 40% caucasian by DNA, have light colored skin and european faces, with facial hair. I know a Afro American who worked in Africa and they called him white man as he was not really black, had a beard and looked like a white man. He was shocked at this reverse racism. So this applies to AsiAm vs FOBS.
You sound like a scared racist who is threatened by black people's very existence. Secondly, most black Americans were married and conservative up until the 70s and 80s, so that's not an African thing. Most Africans receive preferential treatment from white people in America, and so both spouses may be employed, but in Africa, there are no jobs to speak of and the whole of Africa receives more welfare, by way of donations and charity, than any group in America. Also, most black Americans are also employed; so I don't know what you're trying to imply that most aren't is another racist lie created to justify the enslavement, murder, oppression, and continued ostricization and marginalization of black Americans. There are huge variations). Everyday, you racists and non black people who are obsessed with black people, push black people's white DNA up by 10%. Again, black Americans are NOT 40% white, and NO THE PHUCK WE DON'T HAVE EUROPEAN FACES. WE HAVE BLACK FACES WITH BLACK SKIN COMPLEXIONS. AND FACIAL HAIR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BEING WHITE, AS MANY PURE Africans have facial hair. The problem is racist white people and people like you who don't know shyt about black features and our diversity. You are an ignorant racist if you think black Americans look white and that Full blooded Africans don't have facial hair. Yes, some Africans call black Americans white, but when you ask them why, they usually say, "you talk like a white man and have the white man's ways". They never say "you look llike a white man" unless the person is damn near white looking. I've seen many whites insists that Japanese and Filipinos are mixed because of their "straighter noses, delicate features and/or less Asian looking faces". That is obviously racist and untrue, and as a black person, I respect the Asians who get angry at that assertion. I've also seen white people and Latinos claim full blooded Asians were Latino or looked Latino because they were good looking. All the Asians were insulted, as they should have been. That is equal to the racism of denying black people our diverse features to push a narrative. Please look at different African ethnic groups, and see their very straight and slender noses, slanted eyes, blue eyes, grey eyes, gold/brown hair, lighter brown skin and facial hair. Many of them have these features and are 100% African. I'm so sick of white people and others telling black people what our features are when we damn well know best. Please stop speaking on things you know nothing about.
Very interesting indeed. This phenomenon never occured to me but was right in my face all along. I thought back to high school and realized the AAPI FOBs only hung out with each other. AAPI's born and raised in America hung out with each other and/orr various other ethnicities. Never AAPI FOBs.
I'm first generation HK SAR American. I only get along with Fob Chinese International students and other Asian international students. The other Asian Americans treat me like an alien and ostrasized me. They don't want to have anything to do with me.
This is very complicated. Even in Canada where the cbc are mostly a lot less white washed compared to the abc, this still goes on for cultural, political and self hating reasons. East vs west, canton vs mandarin, hk/taiwan vs china, even city vs village. The background makes some of these mixed in insecurity with some hate and prejudice. That's why we never unite to help each other out in the tech industry as the indian and they end up dominating that space
as though every asian got along in their home countries with other asians there. for example do northern chinese get along with southern chinese ? there's bias everywhere.
This is a complex topic but what I can say is that if you usually bring the bad side of a culture into a new culture than people won't want to help you. Also if you think your better than people from your motherland that doesn't help either You just have to be willing to learn from the new culture & take more of the good parts but unfortunately we're living in a world where it's more about themselves. Finally there's places you go to & as a non native you ask for help & because of the language barrier most will just say they No Speak (X) language & quickly leave
Ngl but I thought we got over this topic like 5 years ago. It’s not that Asian Americans hate fobs, we just kinda resent them since they were never cool. But fobs have been becoming cooler and cooler with each passing year so it’s almost as if we koo with them now.
I think it is on American's in general to extend the olive branch but at best I will come across as a curious or well read individual, I can not have the same level of empathy or background as another Asian American. also nice to see the blackpink shirt
It’s only fair because it was america, canada, uk that extended their Hand to other minorities to come ot their country.. so it also is in your blood if you’re born there to have that as well. Whic is why i nkow many comments here are bots or lying or have completely misinterpreted their experiences.. . This is where the cultural clash is. In Korea if someone bumps into you they dno’t appologize.. someone from Canada would think that is really rude where the truth is everyone is just going so fast it doesn’t even occur they were being rude.. vs everything is so slow in canada you have time to think aout your actions 😂 Not everything is racist.. not everything is mean.. this is cultural clash.. western born minorities have the same menltiay nad humour as their country.. and in the west most of us know, to extend an olive branch, u crack a joke.. its not the same in asia. Peopel just take it as insult. Thats the real cultural difference.
Why are ABC's so ashamed of their own heritage? I'm not an American or an Asian person myself i'm Dutch but but all of those Asian country's have a beautiful and great history something to be proud of period. I kinda feel sorry for ABC's. Other than that a great video keep up the great work👍 And greetings from the Netherlands🇳🇱
There are some unspoken narratives of both sides (ABC's vs FOBs vs half-ABC's) - which ABC's might probably be able to relate cox of their heritage originated from Asia (their parents, and grandparents certainly were) but they were raised in a Western way and culture that is so different to many Asian ones - so they feel ashamed and even embarrassed when the others do not act/ think the way they were raised in. it's like we know some part of Asia eat their meal with hands but you might probably find it so quirkly and probably unacceptable by your home's culture. I used to work in a multi-national and international corporate company in Australia - one day we had a Vietnamese-origin graduate came to join our team - she speaks ok English but one thing i found strangely unacceptable of hers is she would play her favorite music in Vietnamese at her work desk that was 3 metres away from her colleagues, the volume was fine but nobody of us could understand the music and were kinda annoyed by that but she seemed to enjoy it. It's little thing/act like this that would probably annoy the local/ and even me as we could not relate to the music, sorry, just cant. She needed to be hinted on that she cannot do that - it would be more than welcomed if it was some english music that's vastly accepted by the local people.
@@makubexho That Vietnamese young lady has every right to be proud of her country/heritage period Vietnam is a great and beautiful country yet again with a rich and beautiful history. Also Asian music is awesome and beautiful so much better than the CRAP that we here in the West produce nowadays. As if the West is so perfect? SPOILER it's not far from it and i live here as well unfortunately😊 Once again i feel sorry for those ABC's and CBC's their culture was stolen from them and they have become brainwashed unfortunately.
@@DidierWierdsma6335 you might have missed my point on bringing up the example of my ex-Vietnamese colleague - i m not being critical nor argumentative here with her act and the music she played on her smartphone at her work desk during office hours - but when you are not from around and do something that's totally out of the place (ie the music is not in the local language and nobody in the office can understand - besides should you check if you are allowed to do somthing like that? she did not even ask but straight to put it on speaker - i mean how about consideration for others working around her? i would have appreciated more if she'd lower the volume of her music to just her own surrounding and not disturb others, who are sitting right next to her and who are talking on the phone with clients, bosses, and business people. I understand working does not have to be all about work, and that's why I appreciated that our office allowed us to turn the radio on and to listen to some pop music at an acceptable volume. Nevetheless, just try to say when you are living and working in a completely different country, you don't just assume things and impose your values on the local people - you may be welcomed to tell the local of the differences of daily life between your home country and the country you are now living, but no intrusive imposition.
@@makubexho I myself also work with people with a migrant background and some of them also listen to music coming from their own country's of origin i have ZERO problems with that period. Like i said before Asian music is awesome and beautiful. I also appreciatie and like Arabic music as well it has a nice tune to be honest😊 we do have a large population of people comming out of those country's as well even as a Dutch person myself i'm not offended at all while listening to it. Americans however are offended by that they believe that their "culture" is superior SPOILER once again it's not ABC's and CBC's or American born Asian's have been poisoned by that as well thinking that they are superior the truth is they are the inferior ones they have forgotten their own culture/heritage and in some cases even their own language as well unfortunately. ABC's and CBC's basicaly American born Asian's are just jealous period that's why they hate and envy people from China Japan Korea Vietnam the Philipines Thailand Taiwan And Hong Kong. Please tell me what's so great about American culture these days?
@@DidierWierdsma6335 i dont understand why are we talking about American? it's not about the Vietnamese colleague, Vietnamese music, Asian foods, Asian people, none of those, it's about consideration given to others, and not imposing your own values on others WHEN you are living in a foreign country/city/etc. you do not go in other people's place and tell them what you like and impose your values on them and they have to follow - imagine a group of people from out of town come to work in your home town (as a chef, construction worker, teacher, business owner, etc) and only speak their own language and tell the local people (incl. you) that you have to speak their language when communicating to them. so you would let other people from other places come to your workplace/hometown and tell you/your hometown's people to speak their language? by the way, I am not even American, nor Vietnamese, I had been an international student for many years living and working abroad.
Just imagine if they were your bosses and co workers. Ya'll be lucky if they are educated and socialable. Here is a advice in life, be very respectful to your self and other.
I'm an ABC, never met many ABC girls and all of them were marrying White Guys so I married a FOB. She was happy that I told her to raise our child as a FOB would. That's because I wanted my child or children to retain their Chinese Values as they were going to get enough influence from me. I did meet an ABC later that was so interesting, I would have married her. I think she felt the same. But then, she married a White guy.
But as a fob asian i absolutely see the hostility from ABCs. It's even easier making friends with white americans / black americans than with Asian americans... Other ethnic group has the same issue, but definitely not to the extent of ABCs vs asian fob
As someone who is 1.5 generation (I went to North America when I was almost 13), I have a good understanding of both Asian in Asia and the Asian diaspora. Sometimes, the diaspora are more racist than even white folks because they were trying to seem so 'un-Asian' to the rest. And I lived in a city full of Asian immigrants (Vancouver) and my schools were majority Asian too. It was very weird to see how even in such an environment, Asian Canadians were so eager to bash the international students and recent immigrants while not being able to fight back when some white students made racist remarks. However, I do see why - no matter how much Asian population a city had, the lawmakers were mostly white and the policies discriminated against non-white folks. So them ditching their culture was a way of fitting in/survival. The diaspora also see the recent immigrants as competition because white society does not accept Asians as 'real' Canadians. And Asian immigrants don't expect the white folks to treat them that well, but are disappointed when people who look like them treat them bad or worse than the white racists. Thus the beef between the Asian immigrants and the diaspora exist.
Because there is a disparity. culture is real. there is a big difference between people born in the U.S. and people born in an asian country just as much as there are differences between people born in each asian country. This phenomenon does happen with people of the African diaspora and Latin Americans U.S. born latinos are some of the biggests opponents to immigration/illegal immigration it probably exists in European Americans too, they just keep it to themselves. I would be interested in a discussion about the differences between families that got to the U.S. before 1965 and the ones who got her after the civil rights act.
I'm curious... As an Asian having grown up in Europe, would i also be considered FOB if I moved to America? Obviously, I was also socialised by Western culture and am familiar enough with American pop culture. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure I would still experience some culture shock there lol
@@aspielaurentnope. The fresh off the boat is meant for those that come from a completely different background to the country they’ll land on. The fresh off the boat means that they haven’t assimilated at all. So everything is foreign. Coming from europe you’re already in the western world.. so no you’re not a fob unless the cultural in Europe and america is so foreign to the point its like s different world lol.
As a Fob the only recism I ever experienced back in High School was from Asian American not White not Black or Latino. It's sad because Asian American is what a lot of us Fobs really look up to and want to be like, talk like but for some reason many of them they think they're better than us they don't realize that we're just like some of their parents.
1:45 i think this is it.. also sarcasm is something a lot of people don’t’ pick up either. Asian americans etc joke around.. ar sarcastic.. sarcasm is a way to break barriers.. but she could have took things personally. It could have been a cultural clash.
The days of Asia america thinking they are superior compare to their Asia peers from Asia are comming to end, Now that Asia countries are economically well off and getting richer.
Dealt with this in France.. here's the deal. MOST international students who can "study overseas"? have $$$$. Period. And often coming from privileged backgrounds make them lil s--tstains who ruin it for the rest of us who look like them but are of a different background and are just trying to get through the day. Case in point - there was a group of students(chinese) who would constantly cover for each other's delinquent behavior at school...got tired of it so I started calling them out in front of the staff(teacher/admin), why? because it reflected badly on me and I was assumed since I look like them, hey part of the group. Either get with the program, or honestly? get out. These are the ppl who make it harder for the rest of just to "rationalize" why we have should have a seat at the table.
It felt like that in my high school and this was in 90’s. That why I kicked it with my Filipinos. I’m the FOB. I married a thick ABC that looks like Korean. I WIN 😂
My wife is native Japanese and immigrated after we got married, when she was in college here she kept talking to the Japanese club at out school and would never get replies and such and so couldn't join. The entire club essentially acted like an anime club and wasn't for Japanese students.
I think what you said is the core reason….. the ABCs are transferring their hate towards their parents to FOBs peers BECAUSE they can’t outright “put down” their parents who feeds them!
I think the truth is.. social economic divide. The stuff she was jealous of.. were international students woh weren’t filthy rich so they were more down to earth. Vs her if shes from china.. i’m just saying.. they tentd to be pretty wealthy and not so much down to earth.. i think she has a skewed perspective and took things that weren’t offense as offensive.. because maybe people weren’t bending to her needs. Running to be her friend.. what if shes really intimidating? Or cold? What if she expected people to come to her vs the Muslim student that was super nice and social? I’m sorry but its hard for me to believe this considering abcs, cbc b b what ever asian born american or any minority not born in their home country is chill. Is pretty friendly there’s nothing really to be judgemental about. It’s why kpop they seem to really love the cbc abcs etc.. abk etc.
From my experience, its hard to love someone who live and born from another country. This is my experience. Those who come from another country (most of them I met are like from 20s), I got used alot. Doing their homework, drive them somewhere they want to go (because they have no license) and come over my house to use my internet. I’m glad I found someone who I get along. She and I friend over 10 years. What makes her difference from other is she handwork, never use me, and she always fair.
@hsuehhs1 now asiab americans are becoming more conservative and Republicans. When people talk about Asian Americans, they think great jobs, smart in education. Not getting into alot of trouble. Legal Opportunity in the US.
Just gonna say I think shes capping.. I think there is more to this story. I think she was rubbing it in peoples faces.. just saying i do tn’ think shes telling the trut
why don’t you just admit that abc and fob are two different species? they don’t get along, period! i have never seen any abc closely hang out or date with fob in bay area.
Yeah me too. Thats because all your life in western countries, you are taught to hate anything different including other nations and cultures. This just make you either hate your own culture or embrace it !!!
