ASICS Superblast After 100 Miles

In the last month, I’ve been taking the Superblast for long runs, tempo runs, and even a marathon. This shoe has been one of my favorite speedy long run shoes, and it’s time to talk about after 100 miles. And yes we’ll also talk about the price.

0:18 Run testing
1:07 Disclosures
2:18 How I’ve Been Using It
5:52 How It’s Been Holding Up
7:45 Is It Overpriced?

10:07 vs Endorphin Speed 3
11:36 vs SuperComp Trainer
12:46 vs Carbon X3
13:13 vs Next % and Alphfly 1
disclosures: ASICS sent me these shoes to review, so I did not have to pay for them. I was also included as part of the promotional materials for this shoe. And I’ve also done a lot of work previously for ASICS. However, no one has paid me to use this shoe or race in this shoe.
Adidas: I bought the Adidas shoes mentioned in this video.
Saucony: I bought the Saucony shoes mentioned in this video.
New Balance: I recently ran New York City Marathon on the New Balance bib. New Balance provided training gear, shoes, and travel and boarding expenses for that trip.
Hoka: Hoka provided the Carbon X3 mentioned in this video. I bought my Rocket X that I mention in this video. I have worked on a couple of event with Hoka in the past, most recently for a Bondi launch event in San Luis Obispo, California, in collaboration with Running Warehouse.
Nike: It’s been a while since Nike and I have talked. But, we used to do a lot of work together. They provided a 2018 Chicago Marathon bib for me, and in 2019, they not only provided a 2019 Chicago Marathon bib, but they also provided coaching, training gear, shoes, and travel accommodations for the 2019 Chicago Marathon.
I purchased the launch colorway of the Next % v1 that I mention in this video. Nike provided a pink Next % v1. I bought the alphafly v1 that I mention in this video. I have not tested or received any Next %2 or Alphafly 2.

Value is different for each person- If it is that unicorn shoe and just works really well for someone that gets you out the door and keeps you excited about running without issues then price is worth it I think, regardless of what technology or the lack of it. I only have 20 miles in superblast and they are growing on me - they are expensive but so far I don’t feel I wasted money as I think I will be grabbing and using these much more often than my other similar priced plated shoes.

I bought a pair of Superblast at the very first morning that Asics put them on the shelf. First of all, I'm satisfied with Superblast. I have ran 3 times with Superblast, 6k easy run, 15k distance run and 30min treadmill run. Superblast is quite comfortable and stable when going up and down, lightweight and breathable. However, I'm afraid it's not quite friendly for people with narrow feet and low instep, like me, I'll recommend thick socks to them. Another surprise to me is that I got a little injury and haven't run more than 10km for about 2 months. I ran 15km on Sunday but I didn't feel uncomfortable or tiredness on Monday.

Thanks for the helpful review! Based on my conversations (in Tokyo, where Superblast has yet to be released), a lot of people who already have Novablast 3 seem to be wondering if the Superblast is different enough to add to rotation, or if this is more like an ~USD 80 upgrade that can help perform faster and maybe longer (?). Personally, I am considering getting one of them initially for longer, easy/slow runs, and it sounds like the Novablasts would be a better fit. Anyway, just my “2 yen” and appreciate the insight!

This is a brilliant and original way to do a shoe comparison. You’ve managed to not make simple price the focus but rather used it as a unique way to avoid “just another shoe comparison” 😊I did try the SuperBlast at the CIM Expo and was impressed. I already have the Edge+ which I enjoyed for the HM relay, and have the Saucony Pro3 in a box with BOS in mind. If I bought the SuperBlast I’d be wanting to use it on my LR’s-which are going to include MP miles. I’m a midfoot striker (not as forward as you) but get wear in the same rear lateral spots first. I’m sure I heel strike when tired. Wondering if these would be good for this use case. About to break out my 1st NovaBlast ever, v.3. BTW, aren’t the laces on the SuperBlast instantly long? Also, did the “scratchy” upper material fray your socks?
@micdavey

Nice overview and I agree the price would be nicer at sub-200, but three cheers for inflation 👎. I've been super impressed with the Novablast 3 and the Metaspeed Edge, mashing the two together sounds amazing. Think I'll wait for spring and then get the Superblast as a nice birthday present!

Great review. I just did the Dublin marathon in them. If you want a really fast AND comfortable shoe that will not destroy your calves and achilles - then I recommend them. what is most noticeable in them is that you recover from your long runs so much quicker and therefore you can train harder in the week. I like it for a long run shoe. I wouldn't use it for anything else. Not a race shoe for me. I think if Asics priced it at $200 or below and sold it (Asics marketing has usually sucked, and they have improved, although the intro of this shoe wasn't great). Thanks for the comparisons. I'm eager to know what the running community makes of these new marathon trainers. Sometimes I want to run distances not too far off of the half marathon mark, but find that a daily trainer tends to be a little uncomfortable after around 15K. However, with raceday shoes, I feel you need to be on your toes so to speak, in order to feel the comfort that they provide at their intended pace, and sometimes you can run yourself out of that distance and end up calling it short. Would you say these new marathon trainers are a good balance between the two? A must have?
@levandmarthapolyakin-aaron2183
@@scottwoodcock2779 I too tend to feel it around 12 miles and more on LR’s when I don’t have enough support or cushion in a shoe. However, re: being on your toes, we older runners who exert the same effort but at a slower pace are not running on our toes-rather (ideally) midfoot, but 99.9% of runners do heel strike when they’re tired and/or running slow enough. Even the Kenyans. Likewise in the late miles of a marathon for we mortals. I’d love to know if the SuperBlast is better or worse for this scenario of LR’s at least, compared to say my NB 1080’s or the NovaBlast 3. Feedback welcome

Nice review and comparisons. I’m glad you’re up front about the brands. Unpopular opinion: I think sauconys lineup is overpriced (perhaps most brands). As for the ASICS superblast, it looks great. I’m still in the camp that asks does one really need a $200+ trainer when something like the ASICS noosa tri 14 works just as well for $130. Sure, the noosa doesn’t have the same foam, but I still can run 20 miles in it and the next day 11 miles in a different shoe. The new foams are great, but they are no substitute for strength training, decent diet, training, and sleep. If you get 700+ miles in this shoe then $220 doesn’t seem so bad.
@KoIhara
@KoIhara Год назад
Or Glideride. Lots of alternatives even within Asics lineup. Or SC Trainer if softer Fuelcell foam works for you. I’m guessing Kofuzi has a healthy relationship with Asics since he’s about the only reviewer who goes as far as making price justification videos for them.

So I'm late to this video, but thank you for such a great in-depth review. I've been thinking about switching to the super blast as my long run, everyday trainers but I was concerned it wouldn't have the snap needed for tempo work. I've got Saucony endorphin speed fatigue - had a few pairs but didn't love how they responded to faster efforts. I have a dedicated tempo shoe but need something more versatile. You think this is better than the hoka Mach X? I've been doing long runs in the Mach 5. Thank you!
@kofuzi

My hypothesis is that people who loved the Mach 5 will be underwhelmed by the Mach X for speed work On the other hand, people who found the Mach 5 a bit too unstable or floppy will love the Mach X

I'm a slow runner, i do a run walk alternately...so my target time is between 5 to 6 hours. I'm considering Superblast / SC Trainer / Prime X Strung right now. I plan to do long run training and race in the same shoe. Let's just say price is not the problem but i can only buy one. Would love to hear some advise from you. Thanks 😁

Fantastic Review, Coach K. THANKS!!! Question: I saw you running in snow with these shoes? I also saw your video clip a while ago related to Peregrine. What’s your commend for winter running when it snows say in downtown Chicago? Would SuperBlast work? Do I get Peregrine? Norda? Thanks!!!
@kofuzi
@kofuzi Год назад
Both shoes can work in the winter, but if it’s more than just a little slush on the ground, like if it’s icy, I’d probably reach for something with more grip and/or adjust the workout (or the workout calendar).
@levandmarthapolyakin-aaron2183
Living in the mountains of CO I agree with Mike that if there’s ice even under snow almost no shoes are safe. I bought the Peregrine and it works great on nice snowy surfaces. I found them to have ample traction going both up and down fairly steep snow covered hills. They’re fairly safe for walking carefully over ice patches but I’d never count on them for running on that sort of surface. The outsoles are quite tacky to the touch.

Well done analysis. At the end of the day, it remains subjective based on your goals. I chose the New Balance SC Trainer because I prefer a long distance cruiser, prioritizing comfort. It's also great at slower and recovery paces. In that sense, what is better?
@kofuzi
@kofuzi Год назад
yeah, if you change the question, the analysis changes. I'd probably pick the More v4 honestly, but the SC Trainer would win between SC Trainer vs Superblast in your scenario presented.

@kofuzi I actually have the more v4 too. They definitely overlap in use.
@levandmarthapolyakin-aaron2183
I tried on the More4 twice, with long slow runs in mind and can’t put my finger on why I disliked it. Is it because I’m so light and petite that it feels like way too much shoe even though it’s light in weight?
@thomasbraun6603
@thomasbraun6603 Год назад
@Lev and Martha Polyakin-Aarons it's possible. I love the more v4 for recovery runs but prefer the slightly firmer but bouncy SC Trainer for long runs. If you are looking for soft and squishy but the more is too more, try the Novablast 3.
