I've always called that feeling "shark anxiety". Like a shark needs to constantly be moving in order to force water over its gills and breathe, there's this feeling that some people have, that they must be constantly moving or doing something productive

Good phrase. Worst one for me is when I feel like I should be doing something, but I don't currently have a go-to project, I feel this agonising feeling of being unable to relax and desperate to do something but also not really having anything to do - and so feeling like I urgently need inspiration for something. I can spend entire weekends agonising

See I'm the opposite... I can sit around doing nothing and feel great about it. I never "feel like I'm wasting my time" by doing nothing, and I do a lot of nothing.

If you enjoy wasting time is that time truly wasted?
@Lintary
@Lintary Год назад
The art of doing nothing is something that some people can easily do and others have to learn it. I always use the example of the first city trip I took with my mother many moons ago, we went to London and she had a massive list of things to do and see, but then day 2 I told her, "Lets grab our books and just sit in that small park behind the church and read for a while." she was in shock at first, but that was the start of a process of learning to relax and do nothing and not feeling a need to do something all the time. Relaxing is important and relaxing does require you to well relax and not be doing all sorts of things as that means that even when enjoyable you are still active and not resting.
@briandeschene8424
@briandeschene8424 Год назад
It’s interesting you used time in London to “discover” this. I learned this lesson from hearing a British woman say during an interview: “I am a human being not a human doing. I need time to just be.” Don’t know who she was or why she said it but to this day she occasionally pops in my head and reminds me in her matter-of-fact British accent to “do” just that. Just be.

I appreciate the insight, I feel like I'm in the same boat but instead of feeling like I wasted my time I also feel panic to a degree. I look back and I feel like I've wasted so much time doing stuff that didn't matter and the time I have now is important to make up for it. but I have to remind myself that even if I'm not working I'm still doing stuff that is important spending it with family and such and that can have just as much value or even more even though it is hard to recognize in the moment.

After 30 years of working 60 hours or more per week (not all of course. But too many to count) at my age now, a day off better consist of 2 hours for morning coffee and the rest of that day, I do whatever I damn well please as long as it isn't work. No guilt involved.

The crazy thing about getting rid of the model workshops is that movies were making tons of money.. Maybe it also reflects the long term decline in Hollywood itself. No that is mostly from the writing and direction, but maybe the two are connected..

Working from your rest is better than resting from your work. Exhaustion is a bad metric for when it is time to rest. As I've examined my own thoughts around rest I've learned I often feel like I need to "earn" the right to rest via working too hard for too long. But that only sets me up to work from an energy deficit with rest being what returns me to neutral. It is much healthier to work from an energy excess, which requires being intentional to rest even when I don't feel like I "need" it (aka, I'm not burnt out yet). These ideas are heavily influenced by the teachings of Jesus, but even if you aren't religious I think it is beautiful that in the poetic account of creation in the Bibel, humanity's first day of existence was the day of sabbath. So before they had done or accomplished anything, God gave them rest.

I have the same thing with get-shit-done-itis. I finally realized that's other people assuming I'm trying to be productive when really it's the same as anybody else having a hobby. Going out to the shop is the same as somebody else spending their free time reading, or playing a sport, or going for a hike. People just assume that because it involves a workshop, it must be about being productive, not about just doing something we enjoy, and that extends to doing projects around the house.

Yeah it depends. Some weekends I'll wake up with the itch. I try to relax but i can't, I feel useless i have to get up and do something. Other days I'll wake up mostly rainy days and say yep I'm not doing a dang thing and I'll watch tv or RU-vid happy as a pig in shit. I think it mostly depends on my work week. I'm a farmer tending to 1200 acres of crops and during the busy time I'll go over a month without a day off other times there's nothing to do and I'll go stir crazy on the weekends

Hi Adam. I love your work. Your sense of organization, your methodology and problem solving process are very similar to that of my own. I have tinkered since childhood, turning to a career as a handyman. I have always struggled with finding the fast. I have learned a number of skills and have become proficient and able to complete tasks. Trouble is, I plateau with my speed. I get to a certain combination of competence and speed, and I struggle to progress further. Do you have any suggestions or thoughts on the matter? It may be worth mentioning that I’ve been working for 20 years trying to figure out how to get professional quality with production speed. Thanks in advance!!

I’m the exact opposite of Adam: I couldn’t live with stuff that I “got done”, knowing that I could have done a better thing if I had given it more time and attention. I get anxious when I see him bash stuff together - of course the difference is that making stuff is a hobby for me and I do have the time to plan things forever, whereas Adam needs to make compromises and finish projects because it’s his job. But neither “getstuffdoneitis” nor overthinking are particularly healthy conditions, the sweet spot is obviously somewhere in between: some day I will go to my grave with a huge list of unrealised projects, Adam will leave a pile of beta versions behind - things that he would have gone back to and improved if he’d had more time. Trying to achieve some kind of balance is definitely the goal.
