Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more!
In this video we discuss some of the differences between catalyzed and uncatalyzed clear coats. I talk about what a catalyzed clear is, and why you may or may not want to use one.
Don't forget to ask your questions in the comment section.

The safety and filtering of these chemicals needs to be explained better. 2k Spray max polyurethane contains ISOCYANATES. This is extremely toxic and CANNOT be filtered by 3m cartridge filters. 2k Spray Max should only be used if you have supplied air exchange, end of story. The catalyzed lacquers DO NOT contain isocyanates. They do however contain acetone and b-butyl acetate. Both of these are filtered by 3m Organic Vapor cartridges. However 3m clearly states that after using OV filters for an hour with acetone, the filter media becomes "discharged" and then fails to filter, which means it needs to be replaced after an hour of use. I really feel like you're lax on this stuff Brad. I've seen you use 2k spray max with no air supply, just filters (useless) and no goggles (it absorbs through the eyes and skin).

Do you find a big difference in recoat times with catalyzed finishes versus uncatalyzed finishes, or does that "recoat window" tend to be about the same?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 8 лет назад
I tend to observe a similar re-coat window with both when I'm spraying. I might give the uncatalyzed stuff just slightly longer, but I generally stay within 10-15 minutes.

what is a general time for the 2 to harden. and how soon do you need to use it after you mix the catalyst in?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 8 лет назад
It usually only takes a day or two to harden pretty much fully for a 2K polyurethane. I'm not sure about catalyzed lacquer, but I know it's faster than the 1K nitro lacquer which takes about a month to fully dry. Uncatalyzed polyurethane can still dry reasonably fast, but you can't apply it as thick as the catalyzed stuff or it won't.

here's a question.... do you see a problem with putting a precat lacquer over something that has a polyurethane finish already on it?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 4 года назад
It depends on how long the poly has been on there. If it’s old and fully cured you should be able sand it with 600 grit and coat over it with the lacquer.

i have a question i got a guitar kit project coming up im going to be using enamel in spray cans my question is since this is gonna have some different colors for different parts do i need to let it fully harden before spraying the next color or just dry to touch before masking and plying the other colors ? thanks keep up the good work
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 8 лет назад
You'll need to let it dry pretty much fully before moving on to the next colour. You'll also want to scuff it in between colours. Have a look at my four part series on how to paint your guitar with spray cans if you get a chance. It's a two colour job done with enamel spray cans.

So the nitro lacquer it is less toxic than the precat or catalyzer lacquer?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 5 лет назад
Not less toxic per se. It just doesn’t harden as quickly. Still very toxic.

kind of off topic but I am buying the auto air pant and primer. is the 16 oz enough or should I go 32 oz. want to practice on some test wood first as well. thx.

Oh, 8 oz is usually plenty for any given colour when you're painting a guitar. Acrylics don't need to go on super heavy. 8 should leave you with some extra to play with.
@mblockey
@mblockey 8 лет назад
ha. thanks. I was going to buy the 32 oz
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 8 лет назад
That would have been a bit much haha. I've done a guitar with 4 oz of a colour before, but that doesn't leave as much room for error/practice. It also helps if your undercoat colour is complementary to your final colour.

This comment in the other hand was totally worthwhile...

This comment actually IS a waste of time. If you'd given your reasons, at least people could bear them in mind while watching the video. If you'd cited sources, people could check those out and eitehr learn that the video actually IS a waste of time, or that you're wrong and it isn't. Instead, you've told nobody anything except your personal opinion. And - hate to break it to you - the internet doesn't care about your opinions
