I feel like "old school" campaigns were able to go for years because they _weren't_ about the characters per se, they were about the world itself. Your particular PC (assuming you limited yourself to one) was simply your way of interacting with the world rather than this deeply-interdependent thing woven into prophecies and such. Changing characters meant shifting focus to another part of the setting, but the actions of the new group were no less impactful than the previous campaigns - and as a bunch of treasure hunters, there weren't usually apocalyptic threats popping up every single campaign.
@jakesgenuineanarchy5955
@jakesgenuineanarchy5955 3 года назад
I think that changed when we start being interested in the world itself and more in the heroes journey in that world.
@Chuckler127
@Chuckler127 3 года назад
I agree that it was about the world and not necessarily about the characters, but I'm of the opinion that the reason old school games went on for years is simply because there were less things competing (computer games especially) for player attention and time. The focus gradually shifted to being on the characters because that's what players generally want - so that better competes for grabbing and holding player attention and dedication these days.
@jakesgenuineanarchy5955
@jakesgenuineanarchy5955 3 года назад
@@Chuckler127 probably doesn’t help that most modern games are stuck to a very short level span, case and point fifth edition only has a 20 level spread.
@joshjames582
@joshjames582 3 года назад
There's a big difference in the end game, too. Look at AD&D 1e for example. The end game is building a Stronghold. Your level 8+ Fighter becomes a new powerful NPC patron for the next generation of adventurers. You leave a permanent impact on the world. The map is changed forever, but your first character's story ends. This is diametrically opposed to modern D&D.
@joshjames582
@joshjames582 3 года назад
And then everybody stood up and clapped as the grognard was vanquished forever, right? But nah. I ain't wrong. The tone and expectations of the 1e campaign were fundamentally different, and it doesn't make anyone smart or enlightened to spew Rule Zero like it's a new or interesting observation in 2021. Thanks for playing anyway.

13:20 when low-level is mentioned as a way to lengthen campaigns, or keep them running by limiting or avoiding overpowered PCs, it reminded me of the Cyberpunk 2020 (and Red) core book's suggestion to "keep it street level". I hadn't thought of its plot-lengthening effect, but if all the players are Keanu Reeves, no one is, in a sense. 🤔

@@kevinsullivan3448 nice concept, "Epic 6". I managed to find the Enworld thread etc about it. Could they have picked a harder to use search term though 🤣 without search-fu most of the results were either about a theoretical "6e", "episode 6" of various shows and podcasts, and all manner of "epic" things. Excellent video, gents. It is very useful to hear the opinions of three well respected GMs. Both to learn alternate ways of approaching common situations and supporting the algorithms of all three. This is also of tremendous value to the young GMs who may perhaps feel overwhelmed by the breadth and depth of skills and techniques and knowledge that are part of the GM's tool kit. Ben doesn't use grids. Seth doesn't use factions. PDM adapted Bill Shakespeare. To see that a GM can be an expert without knowing and mastering ALL the SKILLZ is very encouraging. You can be excellent, too. You don't need to know and use all of it. Don't be overwhelmed. Everything is going to be okay. Well done, gentlemen. You make our hobby look good. Especially PDM-- excellent tie and waistcoat, sir! Excellent moderation, Ben. Keep up the good work! I look forward to more collaborative videos.

Regarding skill-based games, the 2nd game system I was ever introduced to was the Heroes Unlimited (1st Edition, later 2nd Edition) game that utilizes the Palladium Megaverse character sheets for drawing up Super Heroes and Super Villains. I have always been used to games that utilize "skill" systems, considering 1st Edtion AD&D Thief class had percentile-based skill systems for the specialized things they were able to do that other classes could not. When I found Zweihander recently, I really dug the idea that the Ability Scores were also generated using Percentile Dice!

Three of my favorite DnD / Roleplaying youtubers! I tend to agree that feats and skills are great, but they do cause the PCs to pigeon hole themselves too much. The added game mechanics tend to slow things down as well. Like the professor I’ve had the same group since the very late 80s / early 90s. we’ve taken back to an amalgam 1/2e campaign with some home brew in there for good measure because the computer game feel of Pathfinder and 5e were wearing us down. McDeath, Professor? Is that not rather based on the 2nd edition warhammer scenario pack by the same name, then? Granted, that was in turn very much a funny adaptation of the work of The Bard, but with more orcs, chaos hounds and log-throwing crazed Caledonians. I remember having 1st ed AD&D characters in my parties leveling up way beyond level 10, but only a handful made it to 18-20 if any at all. We all got a chance to see how that would hve looked, though, in the brilliant SSI AD&D game series (I believe you had characters that went way beyond 30 in some of the titles). Even at that level, in the games at "hard" difficulty, they would always (and it is not just a way of saying for "pretty often") fail their hold person sve and get autokilled by giant rats or centipedes.

I think there is another reason besides that. A lot of players don't want their PC to get injured unnecesserily or look foolish doing something they clearly aren't good at. So if there is a roll associated with climbing that tree (or the player assumes that) they look at their odds and likely skip that option.
@chrisprocter6107
@chrisprocter6107 3 года назад
If you're a new player used to board or computer games you are used to "games" having a fixed menu of things you can do and nothing else is allowed, and so players tend to look at their character sheet as providing that list, and if its not there you assume its breaking the rules to do it. Once you've been playing a while you come to understand the rules are there to help not to restrict your options, but it takes a while to get into that mindset. You also get DMs who fall into the same mindset going for "roll an intimidation check" rather then getting the player to roleplay that out, which doesn't help the players learn.

great idea on the book questing beast, an entire compendium of cut away isometric buildings would be an incredible way to run an adventure, "id buy that for a dollar!" (-Robocop)

A really good way I have found to introduce a player's new character after a recent death is to have the party encounter a small cell or a room behind a Secret/hidden room and in the room is a person locked inside who is blathering nonsense or jibbering with madness. The party's Cleric can use a Calm Emotions or Lesser Restoration to heal the madness.
