Just found/appreciate your channel. I'm trying to figure out if a family member is becoming demented. He's always been an annoying, manipulative person and hard to figure out where he's coming from. That being the case I've never cut him a lot of slack but since a mild stroke he seems even more so. BTW, the cave diver's tendency to trust a mature person vs a youth brought up my own resentment when the latter call me "sweetie", "darling" etc. -- a common practice at medical facilities. grrrr.

Hi doctor snow this is sherine from Jamaica, love watching your program , my mom that turns 83yrs in April looses her sight awhile back, now we notice she’s calling out names of other people who’s not apart of our household, she’s doing stuff as if she’s seeing , she mixed up the day with the night so we haven’t slept in awhile, she seem to be living the life she once live waking up wanting to go to work , calling out to the kids because she did nursing and worked at the children’s home for a period of time and she’s now aggressive talking back that we’re been mean , it’s so much to handle, so any advice on how we can deal.....thank you!!

Mixing up the day and night may be what is called Sundowning. She may be trying to locate her 'safe people'. The situation sounds more impactful if she has vision loss.

Sundowning ok......with her vision lost am scared because she’s moving around not knowing she’s at risk where many times we have to catch her from falling 😢.......if i say mom that’s happening, her response would be harsh thinking am trying to prevent her from going what she thinks is ok

Just finding Teepa! My dad is suffering from this horrible disease. My mom is his caregiver. He is 90 and she is 85. My dad is starting to have separation anxiety and looks for her all the time even though she is always in the house with him. He now wants to sleep in the family room instead of going upstairs to bed. He sits in his chair and just looks at her while she is watching TV. He has a cane and even when sleeping in his chair, he will not let it go. He is struggling with days of the week and worries about the day he needs to take out the garbage and fights with my mom if she tells him what the correct day is. That makes him very angry. He is physically fit and when the weather is nice outside, he works in the yard all day. Now that the weather is bad, he just walks around the house, but he does the laundry and the dishes or makes a puzzles (sometimes). However, he does tend to be angry at my mom more and more over silly things like the day of the week or that everything in the mailbox is urgent. Not sure how to do with these issues that are triggering his anger (especially not understanding what day it is). Can you give an example of how to help with this. Thank you so much.

I am in a confusing position that I thought you might be able to shine some light on. My husband and I have been taking full time care of my husband's father for about three years. He has been diagnosed with "neural degeneration". My father in law has been an alcoholic most of his life. He has been sober for the last three years he has lived with us. I can't find any information on "neural degeneration". Is there another name for it? He struggles to eat and drink. He forgets where things are. He keeps getting uti's. He is not self reflective enough to tell us when he starts getting symptoms. He gets overwhelmed quickly. He thinks he could walk on a treadmill, even though he hasn't been able to walk in years and broke his hip about 6 months before he moved in with us. He is obsessed with getting his paper and mail. He had terrible hearing, understanding, and communication. I struggle to understand what form of dementia he has and what we can expect. He is starting to do things like open really spammy emails. We do need power of attorney, but he's not ready to give up that control. I identified with what you said when you mentioned going to doctors, and having them say that he is ok. We live with him, we know how tough it is. I am not sure what the normal steps are.

Hi, @Eileen Price, thanks for reaching out and asking. It sounds like you are all dealing with a lot these days. I'm wondering if you might want to connect with our consulting team to see if we can help you figure out some next steps. Please contact us at consult@teepasnow.com or call 1-877-877-1671.

My husband is 78 year old. He was diagnosed with late onset dementia/Alzheimers 5 years ago. I work full time. I have tried getting him involved in various day care programs which he refuses to attend. His reason for not going back to a day care is " IT'S NOT A GOOD FIT".. He tells me he does not have dementia & the neurologist & MRI's are wrong & dont know what they are talking about.I take care of all his needs. My family lives in the UK. Life is difficult & due to our financial situation I am unable to find an assisted living accomation that's inexpensive. I am 64 yes. I would appreciate any advice provided. Thank you.

I wonder as you were telling the daughter to redirect her mother you went to the lilacs; would it be appropriate- - for a person without macular degeneration- to bring out a picture from a holiday or of family? My mom is in beginning of dementia and I have retired early from education to take care of her as this progresses. Thank you a million times over for these videos I am learning so much valuable information on how to be a caring care giver!

I recently had an incident where I couldn’t complete a word. I was at the physiotherapist and he told me to write down the exercises he wanted me to do. In the middle of writing the information down, I was starting to write “touch your toes”...I wrote down to... for toes and could not finish the word. I did not now what came after to. I said to the physiotherapist not to tell me how to spell toes - that I should know how . He ended up telling me that it was an “e” . I could not believe that I couldn’t think of the letter e. This has never happened before. Is this a sign of future dementia? I read a lot and play a lot of games like Suduko to keep my mind active.

I’ll still keep searching for a video that addresses discussing the issue of incontinence: My dad told me a couple days ago that he just had the first accident he ever had… I discovered that he hid his nasty underwear and swapped it for a decent pair, until I do wash and we have a Talk. My thought was to say that honesty is necessary, that sometimes natural changes happen and he can help me to help him better by asking for help as soon as possible. It’s not a big deal because I helped my husband, I help my son, and I’m fine with helping with what is changing. I’m thinking to also tell my dad that he can maintain both independence and dignity by using disposable underwear before he has another accident, and that it’s actually more economical than doing extra laundry. To help others, I will say that Depends is the one brand I’ve found, that’s most like the feel of cloth underwear. As my dad’s dementia progresses, I will switch to McKesson to save money or Tranquility for a heavier duty product of good value, and order online from Carewell in bulk for free shipping… I anticipate needing a robe for him to wear in the shower for accident clean-up, without being undressed in front of me - or eventually an aide. If the decline I saw accelerate after my mom died three months ago continues, I won’t have a terribly long time to manage his care, but I do see that he’s currently very aware of changes that he doesn’t understand.

With dementia, especially in the later stages, it is sometimes easier for someone to focus on a task, like eating, by closing their eyes. Then their brains don't have to work extra hard to try and take in all the visual data that they are seeing.

Teepa, I enjoy your knowledge and wisdom..humour all so life giving...I nursed my darling. Mother through that painful journey Of Dementia..All I say is it’s worth every joyful, suffering moment that was given to me to accompany her..Now she as taken her well earned rest, after a life well lived, raising ten children, acccompanied by a doting, compassionate, and at times sick husband. She always kept a lovely photo of dad next to her,and her mantra was ..All is well me darlin....So ,I write this memory to encourage others, and with Teepa there to lean and learn from, she is a huge blessing to mankind, as this is surely a journey that we will need to be there for each other....Thank you Teepa and support team....God bless your dedication...Amen..

Teepa, Thank You! We are caring for an 80yr relative in our home that has neurotoxicity and dementia. She is still verbal and mobile. She has not drank more than 6oz of water a day for over 50 years. Her labs show severe dehydration and kidney damage. Her doctors including her ophthalmologist all insist on her drinking 75oz a day. We set timers, remind her, and try flavors. She refuses to do much more than wet her lips most times. She has been hospitalized twice for severe dehydration. She has a hearty appetite. I always give her extra broth when we have soup. She goes into restroom every 15-20 minutes 24/7 just incase she has to pee. She flushes every time even if she didn't go. We have a collection hat in the toilet and can see that she goes less than a teaspoon sometimes. We turn off the valve for a few hours at a time to conserve water. We are getting worn out. My husband is up with her 6am-9pm . I stay up until 6am and sleep until noon. Our relationship and business are suffering.

Could another answer for the "cheating scenario" be the Lewy Body characteristic known as Ekbom, the belief that one's spouse is being unfaithful. My mom came up with many stories like this and it didn't make sense until I ran across this in an article on Lewy Body.

Hi again @Mrs. E, thanks for raising the question about other Lewy Body characteristics. Here's some more information about Ekbom Syndrome from the National Library of Medicine (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19961324/) where they describe the idea of delusions about invisible bug infestations. If you'd like to learn more about Lewy Body, please check out these videos on our website (shop.teepasnow.com/jsf/woocommerce-archive/tax/product_tag:213/sort/orderby%3Aprice%3Border%3AASC/) or contact us to talk more 1-877-877-1671.

I know this is old, but I want to comment about the money issue and suggestion to get a financial advisor as a 3rd party. We have the situation of 3 siblings - mom with dementia - and my son, her grandson as the financial planner. It has been such a good arrangement to have him help us all make decisions. I am the primary, but we all have the legal ability to do decisions. But the financial planner grandson has all the investments and he's the one to ask questions and give us budget help. He also has given us perspective regarding conversations that he had with her while she still had the ability to make her wishes known. A 3rd party is so very helpful. Even when they are still family.

Hi, @Cindy Hawkins, great suggestion! We stongly believe that asking people to help who have another view or experience is not a bad thing. Totally agree that sometimes a 3rd party is helpful.
