Dr. Russell Kennedy, aka “The Anxiety MD.” Dr. Kennedy specializes in the art and neuroscience of helping people recover from anxiety disorders. He knows anxiety from the inside out, as he developed his own anxiety disorder due to growing up with a dad with severe schizophrenia. Dr. Kennedy has degrees and advanced training in medicine, neuroscience and developmental psychology -but it’s not all science, as he is also a certified yoga and meditation teacher and was a professional stand-up comedian for over a decade (no joke!) In his award-winning book and audiobook, ANXIETY RX, he shows a practical, actionable program for anxiety relief that incorporates a combination of the latest in neuroscience with the grounding wisdom of the body with the ultimate goal of relieving the anxious thoughts of the mind.
Today on the show we discuss: why so many people are feeling so lost right now and what you can do about it, why thinking actually causes more anxiety, first thing you should in the morning to stay connected to yourself, how to deal with the unknown, tips for alleviating stress/anxiety, why doing activities you did as a kid will make you more successful and much more.

Let's not forget our diet of processed foods, combined with poor dental care; it's a recipe for depression and anxiety. I make sure I keep the food simple and clean. REAL food, and yes, it's more costly, but what I save is a prescription for antidepressants, booze, fancy vacations, and designer labels, because none of that helps. That, and stop navel gazing, and start serving others genuinely. Be of service to your fellow man. Take a walk each day, pet your dog, and thank God for your glorious being and the beings around you. Gratitude, good food, pet a dog, hug a person, clean up your room. It's too simple but it's the best way. We forget we're spirit beings, and we ignore our spirit at our peril. In 100 years, our bodies will be dead, but our spirit will live on. Let's focus on the eternal things that matter. Love, gratitude, caring.

The reason self touch is so powerful and healing especially placing your hand on your heart area, is because of the ENERGY that's released which is felt instantly. If you close your eyes to be present with it you will feel it. Its so nurturing, loving and healing. I personally do this all the time

Excellent discussion. I forwarded this to my daughter who like me has these issues. We both have to constantly be pushing ourselves to do more and more to the point that we get sad and lack of happiness occurs unless we keep moving with more projects. He explains very well. Yes social media is terrible.

this is just what the doctor ordered (pun intended)...I'm turning 50 this year and I am SO tired of being a worrier...I want to live the rest of my life connected and free of anxiety...I love how you said, "anytime you connect the body to breath, you connect the mind to the body"....I am currently getting my YTT and now I know why (as I'm not great at being super flexible)..I am meant to connect my own mind and body and then help others do the same...thank you!

I'm 2/3rds into video and have gotten so much from this. I just decided to stop erasing my checked off achievements on my whiteboard (lol) this week but have been totally stuck, frozen in hyper vigilant anxiety. I sat here hugging, rocking myself, breathing in sync. Then began speaking to myself very caringly. (it never worked before but i really understood the point this time) Next thing i knew i was standing and swaying, singing a song to me (omg) that ended in "what would my best friend do for me?" I looked around and thought "I need to clean for you"!! It felt soo foreign but really wonderful! I always enjoy cleaning for others but not for myself. I get an avalanche of thoughts of all the rest I should be doing. I will keep trying to apply these insights to see if i can shift my emotions and get a little done every day. This talk really tied it all together. Thank you!

I wonder if a good example of the difference between exercising the dopamine and serotonin pathways while doing a boring chore would be: a) doing the dishes while listening to an engaging podcast vs b) doing the dishes while being fully present and intentionally paying close attention to the experience of just doing the dishes .. and trying to enjoy it for what it is.

Here's a gift. Find freedom that's free. While walking my little dog, I heard a strong energy coming towards us. I stopped. Millions of crows overhead are soring in a harmony of flight. Oooohhhh my! Then, one, only one little bird stopped on the grass right in front of me and my dog. This bird pecked a worm and looked right at me. That's happiness that's free. Hope sharing this joyous day offers as much joy of nature to you as to me❤

On the issue of separation and loneliness, it is largely a systemic issue. It is clear that a transactional, money driven system is not capable of supporting a healthy society because we need to feel natural, unconditional belonging to be healthy. Belonging and connection are necessary for safety. What is our evolutionary design ? Is it mainly material accumulation or is it mainly sharing and caring ? We have shut ourselves off from so many aspects of life that make it worth living by creating this materialist, dopamine driven, left brain dominated, greedy, disconnected, misanthropic utopia.

Does television, too, create "dopamine"? We always gathered behind the supermarket, always, there were friends, there. Now, I'm isolating, in another country. I've read much about narcisists, and I think I am. 😮But then, I suddenly feel union with everything ❤ This is a strange, interesting Life. But I'm so unmotivated. Lost my man 4ys, ago, I think having a partner, a family, makes the purpose! Thanks alot 🙏🏼
@Chevalier_de_Pas
@Chevalier_de_Pas Месяц назад
I think we are becoming too neurocentric. Dopamine functions cannot be separated from the psychology of the individual, specific behaviors, and therefore, from people’s experiences. It is true that there are many stimuli today that release dopamine and this can have a deleterious effect on people’s mental health. There are also new addictions like video games, social media, pornography, etc., that can be big problems, but behavioral addiction cannot be reduced to dopamine, and its treatment has to be psychological. For example, why are some people more susceptible than others, why don’t all men get addicted to games and pornography, and others do? Because video games, pornography, social media, television, etc., to varying degrees, of course, can become maladaptive coping mechanisms - they can become means of escaping stress, anxiety, depression (negative reinforcement) - so the pleasure they provide (positive reinforcement) is only part of the problem. These behaviors can play a role in a person’s life that is explainable within the context of that individual’s life-e.g., filling a void, serving as an escape. In essence, these positive and negative reinforcements are equivalent to entrenched beliefs (that certain behavior is rewarding), which cognitive-behavioral work, mindfulness, etc., help to change. One can have a problem controlling the use of technology without having an addiction, specially in certain periods of life, and what this person says is helpful - mindfulness and presence is indeed much needed. However, obsession with dopamine (which is reductive), doom and gloom (sometimes puritanical accounts of pleasure) and the concept of dopamine detox is just a matter of the self-help industry’s obsession with personal development. One can make an effort to become less stimulated when one suspects it's having detrimental effects to see if productivity, attention, etc., increases. It is possible that yes, but it is not by watching television, watching some RU-vid videos, and using social media in moderation (or masturbation without pornography in moderation - the science about it's benefits in moderation is still vast despite what trendy neuroscientists like Huberman, or conservative intellectuals, like Peterson, say) that we will have noticeable losses in performance, concentration, or happiness. It's all a problem of mental health, that indeed too much stimulation enhances and perpetuates, but doesn't necessarily cause.

I must be some kind of gd anomaly or not actually human or some thing. Self touch makes me angry. Especially when I am substituting it for hugs from other people. Breathing exercises. Increase my anxiety. I’ve sat with my emotions so much that I stopped getting anything done. I have hobbies I do them. The solo hobbies, usually end up making me frustrated and angry. Journaling is an awful experience for me. Nothing good has come from it. I’m so freaking sick of connecting with myself. I am completely burned out on self-care and trying to feel better. I wasted so much time and money on therapy. At this point, I am just trying to have as much hedonistic fun as I can pack in and hopefully one of these things will kill me soon.

Building on what someone else here suggested for you... ' hobbies and music' Music is something you didn't mention. Its always worked wonders for me - gets me moving - dance around like a fool - which...just that exercise gets my endorphins jumping which lifts my mood. Another thing you haven't mentioned - exercise - gets our endorphins pumping...makes us feel good - afterward😅. Just a few suggestions...cuz I really feel for your situation. Hoping to help😊

@@barbarafairbanks4578 Music always worked in the past, but it’s a very temporary bandaid this time. Play a couple of instruments, go dancing almost every weekend, but it just feels like fun instead of healing or nourishing. For exercise, I horseback ride and that’s fun, but my job and the weather limit how often I get to ride. It feels like there’s a hollow steel ball inside of me in the area that used to feel infused with love, passion, and other good things. Now, time to get back to being angry about funding balances and the current knitting project.

I think I've just accepted that this is the way that it is.

This arena is big business and my RU-vid feed shows it I think Ive come to a place where I am exhausted by these types of videos- here’s what’s wrong with you and here’s a list of how to fix what’s wrong with you. That search can take on a life of its own and of course RU-vid has filled my feed with all kinds of these types of videos.
