When I was in high school I wanted to get into game design because I was so passionate about games and the artistic process that goes into making them , I went to full sail for a tour and loved the place but life happened and I moved from Florida to north Carolina and my focus had shifted to just getting by , years later I got into blacksmithing as an outlet for my artistic passion then looking at the local market I got into gunsmithing and took a college course for it and that's about the just of what I do now , a bit of knives and swords and a bit of coustom gun work but I'm not making a living off it its just an outlet, I've all ways loved drawing and I am still verry passionate about games and the world in which they exist , I don't regret how things played out because I feel that mistakes are the best way to learn and I wouldn't trade the skills I've learned for anything but lately I've wanted to sell off everything and go back to school at full sail with my knowledge of weapons and there construction process as a basis for my concepts and know how to better inform game developers . now all that being said bethesda game studios is my favorite game developer and my knowledge about certain things plays directly into the type of games they make so it would be my dream to work on fallout or the elder scrolls (Thoes games are why I got into blacksmithing and gunsmithing respectively) so I guess my question is if there is a place for a man like me in the game industry and if its worth it to try to bring my knowledge and skill set over to the game industry

TLDR Hey dude, I know you posted this about 5 months ago so I hope this reply reaches your ears but if not, maybe someone else can benefit from my answer. I think your knowledge of blacksmithing would be an huge benefit to a games company! I really do. I am not a professional, so take my words with a grain of salt but I have been interested in Concept Art for at least 10 years and researched it ever since. A lot of games could really benefit from your precise knowledge of how weapons work and are constructed - most concept artists are more desirable if they have specialised in an area such as Industrial design (and more specifically Weapon design). In the design process the initial phase would be research and sketching and you already have done a vast amount more research that other artists are capable of. Furthermore, I often see that weapon and armour design could be improved upon. As a practitioner of HEMA the fighting style of some characters and the practicalities of weapons can over seem like they have been overlooked, under researched or over commercialised and, while games and films should use their artist license to create stunning visual, they could also benefit from a little more accuracy and originality to really help create the suspension of disbelief and immersion. So in this respect, your knowledge of the construction of weapons could really breath life into the gaming scene. For example, imagine what kind of perspective you could give to the crafting systems of MMOs? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_rncXyHaZZA.html The link above goes to a wonderful, if rather long, concept art talk at the Academy of Arts University. The main person, whose background story I would want you to focus on is Anthony Jones (its like 39min in). Here is a dude who didn't want to be a concept artist until after a few career moves spending some of his life as a plumber beforehand. There is nothing wrong with making a career move and nothing stopping you from making that move except yourself. Obviously circumstances can create unexpected events in your life, but if you want to become a concept artist - draw. You don't even need a degree, it's all portfolio based. Not saying attending a University isn't great - just the environment itself, the guidance from tutors and the freedom to draw all day makes it worth it, as long as you use the time wisely. I think the most important thing to note for yourself is that concept art is an extremely competitive environment because it's alot of peoples dream job but the demand for concept art isn't huge - it is fairly niche. So if you want to work for a games company, drawing weapons, you have to prepare yourself for alot of hard work, some catching up and making a ton of mistakes, and getting your work C&C'd hard. You need to be able to take criticism really well, and just take the advice because a boss doesn't see your artwork as art, its an asset towards completing their intense 3+ year project. SO to wrap up, of course you can work in the games industry. Of course the skills you have learnt are valid. If you want to be a concept artist just be prepared to put in the effort cos there is alot of competition. And if you have a vision in mind, focus on it and just work out step by step how to get closer every day. GL HF Edit: Something I just thought of, if you enjoying being a blacksmith there is no reason why you couldn't carry on doing that but work in the field you would like. As long as you have a portfolio of work, nice shots of the fantasy weapons you have made, there is no reason why you couldn't work for a studio creating props or transition into 3D to create those virtual models. Maybe you can be more entrepreneurial and become a weapon design consultant for a giant company like Bethesda. I mean, hell, they can afford it.

10:00 I think I can feel the change of Photoshop being the industry standard. Its hasn't changed, but I think it's getting there. There are amazing drawing/painting applications that are either cheaper or free, and basically do everything photoshop does, than any concept artist, illustrator, industrial designer, etc.. would need. For example, Autodesk Sketchbook is now free (has been for awhile now, presumably because they probably won't update it anymore) and it has everything you need, but is much more streamlined and minimalist in its UI. It uses widgets, which I actually prefer over the standard Photoshop workspace. The other example if you really like photoshop, the closest is probably Krita. Its still technically beta, but it is made for artists, by artists. Has literally everything photoshop has. I can't think of anything it doesn't have. Uses a workspace UI as well... Its free. So far the only problem I have come across is uploading their JPEGs. Everything will look right on your device, or if you transfer from one device to another.. but for some reason it gets darker and blurrier when you try uploading it to a website or sending to another person over texting or DMs. I am sure they will fix that soon as they are very active in updating. So photoshop being the industry standard, while true is probably mostly do to the fact that the industry uses what they are used to. Unfortunately, photoshop is clearly marketed towards professionals and workplaces. The prices are too outrageous for your general artist, freelancer.. honestly I would probably still suggest Sketchbook over photoshop any day. And I think within the next 10 years, there will be even more cheaper alternatives because competitors will know how to reasonably price their products. I think the price behind photoshop has stemmed from being the best dressed and first on the ballroom floor. They didn't have competition and so they knew they could gouge thousands of dollars out of each customer. But frankly times are definitely changing. personally I don't think paying over 100 USD for a one time payment for an art program is at all reasonable. Even with all these features that are just so unnecessary. Half of photoshops features are meant for photo manipulation. Which concept artists and illustrators dont need to use. Even for photobashing, all you need is the ability to have layers, change layer blend modes, use transform and warp tools and soft eraser. All of which Sketchbook and Krita and probably dozens of other art programs have. Not to offend anyone but Adobe is essentially the Apple of the art industry xD

Hello, its lovely to finally be able to work up the courage to actually message you! I am 17, turning 18 this March, I and attend an art high school for digital arts and modeling. I truly wish to become a concept artist one day, but I am so scared because it is such a competitive field. I am lacking a few skills seeing as I joined my program in 11th grade, but i am really adamant on fulfilling my dream! I was wondering if ( even with some of my missing links in some foundations of drawing) I can still get accepted into college and work in the industry. I know it will take lots of drawing off campus and other classes, and Im willing to do so! Thank you again!

Hey there, just found this channel since i am gathering all the information i can to get my career as a concept artist started and i must say that you sir, just took all my doubts... I am a 21 y old guy from Austria who graduated as an industrial engineer and soon found out that this is entirely not my world. So i sat in my room for an eternity trying to find some sources that take away my fear of not being able to swap around my life and become the artist i always woulda loved to be. But u just made that as easy as it gets. I really want to thank you for that and i truely hope that i will be able to develope the drawing skill i need to become successful. PS: For anybody desperately searching for some color literature i can really recommend Color & Light from James Gurney (the creator of dinotopia), probably one of the best books in terms of teaching the quintessence of lighting shadowing and coloring! Cheers guys

David Garza To get better, just draw everyday (if you can), look at other artists to get inspired and try as much styles/ mediums as possible. It’s as simple as that. I recommend checking out artists like Kim Jung gi, Karl kopinski, moebius, Jake Parker or Jesper Ejsing. You should find a lot more people over the internet that you might like. Watch a lot of tutorials as well, they are very helpful.

In the art world. A solid portfolio is all you will need. No degrees required. If you possess very strong raw fundamental drawing skills, that is all that matters.

PhantomDrawing how do i improve my drawing? Self learning or i need to join some art courses?
@PhantomDrawing
@PhantomDrawing 8 лет назад
I would say for most people, going to an art school is probably the best way to go. However, for a certain select group of highly self-motivated individuals, free online or payed tutorials is all that's needed. The most important thing is that you have to love what you do. RU-vid has a ton of great channels and tutorials nowadays. As long as there's a will, you can learn just about anything you put your mind too.
@radheksabintangakbar862
@radheksabintangakbar862 8 лет назад
How long it will take to actually master the basics?
@PhantomDrawing
@PhantomDrawing 8 лет назад
It really depends from person to person. But as long as you are drawing everyday or at least every other day and your pencil is constantly moving, you can make drastic improvements in a short period of time. I myself am no master at drawing fundamentals. But the main drawing fundamentals you may want to study are anatomy, color theory, composition, perspective, and light & shadow. I would recommend to just draw what you love and are passionate about and whenever you hit a roadblock, free tutorials are just a quick search away. Good luck. :)

It really differs from studio to studio. Some expext you to have illustrative skills as a concept artist. But basically an illustrator is an artist, not a concept artist, because theres no concept you create. Concept art is also sometimes described as concept designer which fits a lot more to the job in my opinion.

What if I'm not good with coming up with original ideas..can I still use other art from other artist as a reference to build new ideas ? Or is that plagiarism ?

I don't want to be a concept artist. I am making a 3d short.. so far by myself. and want to get people involved once I have enough started. And so want to make the concept art good enough for myself to use so I know what I am doing. I am better at 3d art then 2d art, and just 'get by' in 2d art. Like I just need to get my ideas out on paper. any suggestions?

@nothingspeaks 6 лет назад
so i have a question, i want to draw stuff like this and be creative in different way (i also wanna get into VFX) and my problem is i just dont think im good enough even with people saying they like my drawings (back when i was drawing) im not drawing anymore because of it. also im always subconscience of people looking overr my shoulder and im constantly worrying about what they are thinking, so i guess my question is, do you have any tips, to stop thinking about what others are thinking about to help me be crreative?

it's never too late! It just requires discipline, persistence, and ideally getting into a daily ritual of some sort involving drawing and helps to see the world around you with eyes like you'd draw it. It takes time, but you've got PLENTY of time left on earth my friend :) in one decade you could from from 0 to master if you put your mind to it and get really honest about where you need to improve

Thank you so much for this video!!! It really helped me because I'm 15 and I really want to become a concept artist for those big game companies like Bethesda or ubisoft, and this video really helped me out!!! I just have one question, I already draw when I can and I want to start learning how to to draw on a computer. Would you happen to know any good digital drawing programs or software for a beginner like me?

+THE_JEDI_GUY Practice traditionally as much as you possibly can - use watercolors, acrylics, color pencils, markers, inks, etc and when you are at the computer some of the three standards are Painter (Corel), Manga Studio, and Photoshop (Adobe).

+THE_JEDI_GUY Hey! I'm 15 as well, and my parents bought me a Wacom Tablet. Using this with Photoshop can really help if you want to be able to draw on a computer. Their products are really good, however they are quite expensive. Anyways, hope this helps!

THE_JEDI_GUY Sorry, I don't. The whole creative cloud thing is just annoying isn't it? My school has a software site which we can download it from, they must pay for an educational edition or something, but you can only download it on the school WiFi. Otherwise, you could use gimp. It's is still pretty good and it's free.

I have no real place to tell you anything as I am a mere 13 y/o unprofessional concept artist/wannabe, but when drawing on my tablet I usually draw a circle head with a box like torso and pose the arms and legs using sticks and circles as elbows/knees and square feet/hands, I then use the layers to give it more form and go over it... I was surprise that technique worked at first but now it just connects with my art-style. Its harder to do on paper tough (Sigh).

It might help to make things in the distance more blue and desaturated. You should also decide exactly where your lighting is coming from in 3 dimensional space.

+L.O.S. Inc design doesnt always require color. as long as you get the ideas across. you should buy those glasses and see if they work. just dont use them for long hours infront of a screen. theres always a way around things
