As someone who recently reviewed 300+ interviews for an environment artist position, I can attest to the fact that your portfolio has to be relevant. A lot of people had nothing but pretty girls or a little bit of everything. I cannot judge an artist by one or two pieces. The artist we hired has 100's of different environment concepts! Because of the number of concepts that I saw, I am confident that he will deliver solid concepts in a timely manner, thus saving our small company money.
@perigosu8449
@perigosu8449 2 года назад
@Sam Fontaine if you love environments, you have to stand out in that area. Being average at many things is not as useful as being an expert at one field. Throwing creatures in there doesn't hurt... but I doubt you will get picked for a creature gig over someone who lives and breathes creature design (unless you're naturally a badass artist who can do anything and everything).

@@perigosu8449 This is somewhat relative. If you're good (not necessarily expert) at many things maybe you're a great deal for a small studio where hiring 1 instead of 2 people matters. Competition's tough for big studio's with specialized positions though so I'd say if you're interested in many things, "perfect" one of them and be good at the rest.

Totally. There's a big misconception about what concept art is since illustrations are used to promote games and films - most people see gorgeously rendered pieces and mistake them for being concepts. Most people don't see the rough, less-polished work that actually gets used behind the scenes in-house to make games.

There’s a difference between fine art and what’s being discussed here. Fine art is not a contest. There are many fine artists out there whose work is completely removed from the fundamentals that you would learn if you were interested in being an illustrator, per say. Because that’s not what’s important. It’s about the art, about the subject matter, about the visceral and emotional impact. All of which can be achieved without being a top notch draftsman. An illustrator or concept artist is first and foremost a draftsman. Two very different positions to be in as an artist. Just something to keep in mind.

you improve more when you don’t treat it like a competition, focusing on your own art instead of others your age or skill level is crucial The old masters spent years on their pieces because they worked in their prime, making specific art as a job is tough because you don’t really use your creative brain

@@jeremyk9400 yeah i heard him saying that , a guy in his his 20's has a lot of energy ,wich is true ,and that we have to compete with people like that, i'm not dead yet , but i can feel that i just have a bit less energy since my 30's , like i need to sleep 7/8 hours otherwise i'm dead,while when tyou have 20's 25 ,you sleep 4 hours and you're good ..But otherwise it's more about being afraid of being judged because you're older , like imagine , you get a job , and your art director is way younger than you ,i know it's all about your work and portfolio , but when you see a lot of young prodigy in the concept art industry , it's kinda scary but surely doable i guess
@Within_Cells_Interlinked

It’s definitely possible. You just have to work and train smarter. Focus on ONE area, whether it’s environment design, character design, props, modeling, etc., and become the best at it. Then if you want to, move on to other areas that interest you. Younger people have the advantage of trying out a bunch of different things before deciding what to do, older people less so. If you want to dive into this further, The Art Department podcast talks about this more. Bottom line, age doesn’t matter. Your work and ability to meet deadlines does. 😉 Don’t feel ashamed of your age, just go out there and be awesome. Imagine yourself in ten years looking back having NOT decided to pursue the things you wanted. You’d be kicking yourself for not starting now.

Don't think just grab a big flat brush and fill in the canvas and then you'll eventually feel the need to decrease the brushes size and opacity as you go and voila you'll have a bunch of shapes before you find the time to think about it. (worked for me I used to overthink as well)
@ErickShocks
@ErickShocks 3 года назад
Well, nothing is actually new. Just start by combining different things that already exist. Did it turn out good? Great! Didn't it? Great too, you checked out a bad combination. The greatest concepts in my opinion are those that are sufficiently grounded to make me think they could actually be made/found in real life. If you don't like this approach, I believe you could still find a place at illustration where you draw things that already exist, like landscapes and other backgrounds/scenes
@mophead_xu
@mophead_xu 3 года назад
creativity is a teachable skill, dw. it's not about imagining or creating something new, it's about connecting things that already exist into one cohesive product. a remix, if you'd like. people that're considered extremely creative simply saw patterns in things others didnt notice, or simply by messing around with the question, "what if ...?" what if i combine this with that? what if i use this colour/pattern usually associated with one thing to represent another thing instead? etc. so, again, it's not about creating something new, it's more about mixing and matching things together with the intent of making something better than those things independently. moodboards and collages i think are really good practices for creativity. :-)

Nothing is original. It's like "finding a style", learning from multiple good sources by trying to imitate them to see why and how they're good. Like ErickShocks said, if it didn't turn out well that's good too because you're learning from mistakes. Combine and see for yourself.

I think this video speaks the truth about the industry you will "have" to work extra hours and layoffs are really common but I think the way you said it make it sounds like artist need to tolarate this because it is like that and nothing can be done about, especially when you say is sometimes not paid. Hopefully and probably you think the same way as I do, is not ok. Please artists make yourself get respected. Do not get into positions where they exploit you, even if it is a great curriculum point, especially for years like Mark said, just quit those jobs is not worth it. Your art will speak for you and if you need to get prestige then better improve your art not your curriculum. Is a complicated job and world, I'm not trashing on Mark's words they are the truth but at least I'm trying to make it clear that yeah the industry is like that but is not ok and nobody should tolerate it no matter what. Is not cool to be on the club if the club just wants to harm you.

The things you say are very reassuring to me, since it is ideas that I really excel at, and drawing/illustrating is the tool I want to use to show the ideas. Now I just have to keep on practicing.

This is EXACTLY the type of industry I'm interested in! This was incredibly helpful, thank you soooo much! Most helpful industry related video on RU-vid I've found so far! My dream is to become a character concept artist, but my art style still needs work. So it was super encouraging when you said that "good art" isn't always what's needed, but ideas are what really counts (and I have more ideas than I know what to do with, haha 'xD). Super excited to explore this more and find out if this industry is actual for me! I'm totally considering checking out your school when I have the funds! Digital art is a paaiiinnn to me, so any help in regards to improving it would be a life saver. Again, thank you so much! This was enlightening

I'd never thought about being a concept artist before, but that this video has made me think about it, i think it would be a good job for me. I am very creative, enjoy drawings (specifically sketching) and my ideas can be all over the place leading to a interstingly unique interpretation.

From my observation, clients usually game devs cant fully comprehend an idea whether its a good or bad one and cause of that, concept artists tend to illustrate their ideas to communicate well with the client. And it goes on and on until the two terms got mixed up.

I took your advice from an older video you made, saying: Make a public portfolio. Get recognized, and build a community. I have a Deviantart page, even though I am not very good at digital art yet. I hope to improve while growing and enjoying this whole process. Thanks so much for the advice! I really love that I took that jump, and stepped out of my comfort zone.

I'm so happy I watched this. I want to be a character concept artist, so it was this video has helped me with my worries. I love drawing, I live creating characters, I need more practice in both art and getting good ideas, so I think I'd live to go on with it. I have a long way to go, I've got so much more room to improve - and although I'm scared for what the future holds for me if I keep going down this path, I'm goin to try my best. I'm still young, so I've still got a bit more time left. Thank you

Hi Marc, Thank you for all your tutorials. I have seen a lot from you about how to draw and how to prepare professionally. As an aging artist, I have become concerned with creating professional longevity for myself. I have noticed it has been harder to sit in the same position without strains and pains. What is your experience with creating an ergonomic work setup and how do you keep your body in shape to grind out long hours creating digitally?

I don't know whether or not I want to, or will be a concept artist, but I am interested in it, mostly because I've looked at the concept art for Zelda games and it looked really cool to me. I love how different the characters looked early on, while still being recognizable as the same person, and it's fun to see early ideas that never made it in-game. :)

Hello!! Professional COncept artists here and I absolutely agree. What is most important is bring ideas, use references and ideas to the table, finished art is not as necessary as people think. We have only had a few clients asking for fully rendered and finished concept art. Most of the time they just want visuals to the ideas they put out. If this is a job you want to be a part of absolutely give more value to your creativity and ability to put that down in an image than the quiality of fully rendered drawings!
