Ask Trooper Steve: Why do people stop so far away from a red light? 

... not to mention the under-pavement sensors *at the stop-line* that let the traffic signal "know" a vehicle is waiting at the light.

Seriously when people stop that far behind it drives me NUTS

99.9% of the time that they do that it's because they're too busy on their phone or the 1% of the time is if there's a lead car tractor trailers that are getting ready to turn up the opposite directions to give them the room to make their white turn to go up that road

Simply its just so the driver cloud see the green light when apperd the same reason why the nearset car to the red light cant seen its green so there a 100% the driver that behind him he cloud sees green light and 100% hes gonna honk so he can move put of the way

It’s suppose to be within a car lengths so you don’t rear end the car in front of you if you get hit behind

Actually for a woman that can be very dangerous to be close up behind another car. I was always taught to stay back enough room so that you could do a 3 Point Turn in that area or go around the other vehicle in an emergency. I do not use it for being on my cell phone Because my phone is turned off and in my purse, But I have had to use this technique. Women need to know how to protect themselves, Especially when coming up behind another car.
