Asking Permission to Marry My Daughter

Recently I had the honor to speak to the Men's Ministry at the Lawrence Wesleyan Church on "Mentoring in Business." At the end of the presentation, I opened it up for questions and the last question I received was from Pastor Nate who will be performing my daughter's wedding ceremony in June. He asked if I would be crying when I walked my daughter down the aisle. I took that opportunity to share my view on marriage and fatherhood with the men in the room. What I did not know was that my future son-in-law was recording my response.

I have a question. Do most fathers don't ever want their daughters to find love with a guy? No matter what, most fathers seem to hate it whenever their daughter has a boyfriend (even if he is a good guy). There are even shirts made for daughters that say "I'M NOT ALLOWED TO EVER DATE" and shirts made for fathers that say "DADS AGAINST DAUGHTERS DATING". There's also a lot of other shirts and merchandise made for fathers that say stuff like "Rules for dating my daughter: #1. You can't!" or "Before you date my daughter, know this: I'm a dad with a shotgun, a shovel, and a backyard." I have also heard many fathers on the internet say that they hate the idea of their daughter having a boyfriend someday, and are completely against it. So it seems to me that most fathers don't ever want their daughters to date and be in a romantic relationship with a guy and get married to him someday.

Isn't odd thought you get a say in who marries your daughter but if you have a son you have no say in who marries him though. But what if your son's wife hurts him, does she get a free pass?

You don't actually get a say in it, it's just a tradition to ask the father. If he says no you can still do it anyway.

@@timriggins70 called respect you can give a blessing or not as the dad they can still marry with or without your permission. just a respectful thing, it goes way back when a man was head of house and wife was well the wife why would a man need to be asked permission for his son who is also a man. you ask the dad to take his daughter away not just down the road like now but to love and protect her in new lands or across seas. so very old tradition older than the USA that still shows respect

8-16-22 This is wrong. No boyfriend should ever, do that. She is not property. Let her tell her parents and you tell yours . Abd dint leave out her mother. Hiw dare you. The mother is her like parent anyway and most important. So if you are sexist enough to ask, then ask her mother.

No one says the daughter is property. It's about showing respect to the parents that raised her who want a worthy match for her and so they can rest assured their daughter is in a stable and loving relationship.

So tell us who is the daughter and boyfriend showing respect to? You say this is showing respect to the person who raised her, but .....the one who raised her, is left out. This dies not make sense. And yes you are saying she's property.You know how people ask for permission to use someone's car or house, or something. We ask for permission from the person who owns saud property. But! Couple does not need permission. The daughter is an adult. So when you foolish boyfriends out there, seek permission. Stop boys. Stop. Anyway left out her MOTHER, the most important parent !! Mom ought to shut this sh down. What if we omit you dad? 🤨😡And that's exactly what you and they are doing.
