Ah thanks - Vaseline/petroleum/duct tape DONT work. I tried. Fly paper does work but it’s messy. I use Tupperware and set the tub on the lid, and then fill the lid with water (which attracts them and they come out of the bin) and dish soap…… like a moat around the tub….. THEN wd40 or oil around the edge of the lid/moat to keep any swimmers (somehow a few make it across the moat) the won’t cross the oil. I tried the split peaS and ground them in my ninja…. That worked. 👍🏻 I usually take my green in the oven at 200 for at least 20 minutes sometimes higher temperature sometimes longer… I forgot this time and now I have GRAIN MITES😠… from human grade oatmeal?!😒GROSS

wish I had watched this a few weeks ago, i had them on the outside of the drawers. I tossed the worms, vacuumed them, washed the drawers in extreme hot water and dawn. smeared PJ around the outside top inside and out of drawers, So far so good. I think they came from a jar of calcium feed.

At least you've found it now :) This playlist may also be of interest to you, it's from a mite outbreak I had in my current facility and a real "in the moment" example of how I tackled it. ru-vid.com/group/PLSorN8_zF3ty6Yw2LR0sqJTs-MHDaX8Gv Mite outbreaks happen to everyone at some point, it's honestly just a matter of time even with every precaution taken. Keep grinding, the mealworms are tough and can bounce back, you got this!

Did grain mites damage eggs or the mealworms? I'm facing this problem for the last 3 months. Between these 3 months, I controlled the issue but from the last few days, I checked now the grain mites were double in numbers. I panicked but after watching your video little calm and now I will try to apply all the information that you explained. Thank you.

I found a lot of strange pupua in my meal worm bins. They move. They are dark and larger than meal worm pupua. What could they be? Trying to add a pic.

I see a product on Amazon called True Sprouted Flour: Sprouted Green Pea Flour 1LB for $5.58. Is this the same as what your suggesting? I super appreciate you posting this. This is the second cycle of grain mites so I really am desperate to prevent them.

I'm not sure they have to be sprouted split peas. I buy dried split peas and then grind them myself.

Hey I have an infestation of grain mites on my refrigerator. I didn’t know how to get rid of them so I just used a clean cloth with water to wipe( at first I thought it was dust on my refrigerator) this morning they are back in plenty 😰

@melissahiller3784

Same exactly! Kept wiping it down wondering what was splashing on my [stainless steel] refrigerator. Finally noticed late last night they were moving!!! Definitely freaked and started on my quest to find the source. Discovered some moldy bread at the back of our bread area which is near the fridge. Got rid of it and tossed out all the bread, wiped everything down with soap and water, then vinegar. Came back minutes later. A few more had replaced them. Repeated the drill again and again, went to bed, and woke up to the same scene on my refrigerator. Weather has been humid lately but I've lived here over 20 yrs and never gone thru this! Hoping that bread was the source. Idk! Thoroughly disgusted! I just want them gone! Thank you for your video. And this comment - im sure its the same thing! Were u able to get rid of them once and for all?? I'm sooo creeped out!!! 😖

@@monicab4949 sorry for the late reply! So I’ve noticed they are not there as much. Just a few here and there since I last posted my comment. I’m thinking it has to do with the tortillas my husband forgot in his lunch bag and tossed it up the refrigerator 🤦🏽‍♀️ Lol. We tossed the lunch bag out. Took everything from top the fridge. Wiped with warm water,bleach and soap. Day 2 we repeated the same but this time used a blow drier on hot to blow them away Lol. We’ve kept on cleaning with soap 🧼 and water and even though they are not as many they are still there. I’ll keep on wiping and hopefully they will eventually give up and quit laying eggs 🤷🏽‍♀️ Lol. They are so annoying urghh

@@melissahiller3784 yeap, we found out the same way. My husband had left some food in his lunch bag and forgot about it. Continue wiping down with soap and warm water especially between the rubbery area that shuts the refrigerator. That’s where they lay most of their eggs. Also try using a blow drier on hottest setting and blow your refrigerator thoroughly. Praying this works for you 🙏🏾 keep me posted!!

OK first I'm not panicking..lol I have used petroleum around top 2 to 3 inches wide the mites have crossed it. I have done a lot of research hot water. (Scaulding) mites seam to keep thriving. Now I have tried lysol on paper towel wiping edges. The mites keep coming. What can I put on my trays with worms and beetles I was gone 4 days and came back to a nightmare. Heeelp

Split pea flour, put it within the bin and also around the bins to help kill what is escaping. If you could send me pics via FB / IG or even to justin@midwestmealworms.com, I can take a look at what's going on. It's really odd that they are crossing the petroleum, it would be more likely that they have escaped and are just already outside the boundary. Also, decrease humidity and remove all moisture sources.

@@kellylowden9475 split pea flour is a specialty item, organic stores, fancy places have it. I bought dried split peas and ground them myself - they are super hard, takes a sturdy grinder. Email me at justin@midwestmealworms.com, I'll send you some free if you're in the continental US.

@@MidwestMealworms I got some in. Thank u sir. I have put the pea powder in the bins but it doesn't look like it is killing them very well. The next morning I had a bigger infestation. So I keep killing them with scalding hot water so far that is the only thing I have found that has killed them. I even stuck them out over night in 10 degrees it killed them too and the baby meal worm came back to life after they warmed up. But the mites keep coming.. lol.and yes they are in my house. Lol

Hi I recently discovered grain mites in my bin. I had a tiny enclosure for meal worms and one for my dubias came home opened it and it was covered in dust that was moving. I took the bin outside hosed it down tossed my meal worms. I left the bins outside and move my dubias into a small bin. I got split peas used a coffee grinder to grind them up dusted it in the bin. And put petroleum jelly at the top. I turned my dehumidifier back on in my bathroom that’s where I’ve always kept my bins. Is there anything else I can do I found like 6 mites on the inside lid. What about cleaning my bathroom with hot soapy water? I haven’t seen any mites anywhere else but the bin lid. Also how long before I can use my old bins?

Cleaning is always helpful. Integrate the split pea flour with your substrate until you're ready to risk having mites again.

Do you still respond? I have a massive infestation in my house. Can you tell me if they live on clothes? I wanted to know if I can put this split pea flour on clothes? I have seen them crawling over my fridge. Called someone who sprayed pesticide and it still didn’t kill them. I also had some on my phone which I washed but a few hours later I saw one crawling on the screen. Can you tell me what to do for electronic devices affected by this, I clean them and then a few hours later they are still there. Any advice would be much appreciated.

They can live on anything. I don't know if split pea flour can be used on electronics, that probably wouldn't be good for the electronic. Did the pesticide sprayer have other ideas? Did they confirm they are grain mites?

@@MidwestMealworms I tried using one of the open AI technologies to find out, interesting answer. Grain mites can have a negative impact on mealworms by competing with them for food and resources, and by potentially transmitting diseases. Grain mites are small arthropods that commonly infest stored grain and other food products. They feed on a variety of organic materials, including grains, flour, and dried fruits, and can also feed on the excrement and dead bodies of mealworms. In a mealworm colony, grain mites can compete with mealworms for food and resources, potentially reducing the productivity and growth rate of the colony. In addition to competing with mealworms for resources, grain mites can also transmit diseases to the mealworms. Some species of mites are known to carry bacteria and fungi that can infect and kill mealworms. The presence of grain mites in a mealworm colony can therefore pose a risk to the health and productivity of the colony. To prevent or manage infestations of grain mites in a mealworm colony, it is important to maintain good sanitation practices and storage conditions. This can include regularly cleaning and disinfecting the colony and the storage containers, ensuring that food and bedding materials are kept dry and free from contamination, and monitoring the colony for signs of infestation.

If you are feeding the mealworms to other animals, does it harm that animal when they are eating mealworms that have eaten water crystals?

Can you sift the mealworms out of the grain and toss the grain? Will the grain mites hang onto the mealworms?
@MidwestMealworms

There will be some grain mites that hang onto the mealworms, but removing the substrate could be a good tool to use when fighting mites.

Thanks for this video! I thought I had grain mites in 2 mealworm bins. Only noticed when I put the bins on a black table. Two days later there was White dots everywhere. I couldn’t see them moving maybe it was dust! I panicked anyway. I’ve put petroleum jelly on the tops of bins that didn’t look affected and pitched the two worst. I’m going to have to clean the entire laundry!
