_"I had cancer surgery here in France. If I were in the US I'd be dead."_ If you're in the top 10% and have high-end health insurance you'll get very good medical care. Also living in a large city with teaching hospitals is a big plus. Having contacts in the medical industry and knowing who are the best oncologists for your cancer you'll get even better treatment. *If you're in the bottom 50%, have low-end health insurance and live in a city without teaching hospitals you stand a much greater chance of dying.* Even with high-end health insurance expect to pay many thousands of dollars in co-pays and with low-end insurance much, much more. Socialized healthcare is not only economically better than the US' current for-profit system but also morally the right choice.

I cannot believe a well educated population in the US cannot understand how Medicare couldn’t benefit them! I live in Australia and we don’t have the anxiety, suffering and death that a private health care system provides. After all, its profits are dependent on denying healthcare to as many people as possible !

tad562 Still baffles me. Healthcare for everyone a sign of a civilised society. Bernie’s capitulation has really jeopardised the future for many Americans. His campaign was putting universal healthcare on the agenda. Bernie’s campaign was massive. Tens of thousands of activists, tens of millions of actual and potential supporters and hundreds of millions of dollars squandered. It was the perfect opportunity to start a third, socialist party? By subordinating his politics to a profoundly bourgeois candidate would have to have been the biggest political blunder in generations. How long is the US Left going to subordinate itself to this undemocratic corporate monolith that profoundly hates it and fools it every time into committing political suicide? It’s clear to everyone else in the world that the corporate Dems would rather lose to Trump than lose to Bernie.

The majority of americans WANT and would happily CHOOSE it if we had the options, but just cause 70% of Americans want something, doesn't mean we get it. America isn't a country, it's a corporation with the government leaders serving the corporate states, not the people.
@scottlewington8439
@scottlewington8439 3 года назад
Shawna Gillentine 70 percent of the US still leaves 100 million people wanting a healthcare system that is incredibly inadequate. Quite amazing. We’re in 2020! I don’t know anybody here in Australia who thinks this is a good idea. We have a very large public and a smaller, struggling private sector in Australia which have been calling for privatisation of healthcare for decades. People, especially young people are abandoning their ridiculous system in droves because it’s too expensive and suffers from all the shortfalls that your system does. Now, they’re putting their hands out again for more government subsidies. Basically, the whole system is government funded, but these parasites want to keep the profits. But it would be political suicide for any government to privatise healthcare.

Larry Sherk it’s not just McDonald’s that a terrible job for younger people. Way too many adults get basically near poverty trapped into low paying job they hate simply just to survive! Both would give many people an incentive to seek a better life. This would bring up wages in low paying jobs because these dead beat companies would be forced to pay more due to lack of workers. It’s exhausting to be an adult, trade time for crap money, still struggling to where you can’t afford basic necessities in life. Overworked=early grave, you die, no company that you drop dead for will ever give a damn now! They’ll replace that person with someone else, thinking nothing of it. ALL companies that do not pay at least a living wage should be fined and heavily! There is no excuse to not pay people enough to live, it’s called greed and corruption. Way too many many companies taking advantage of a system that singularly uses and abuses the most vulnerable population, the poor and lower-income working class. The middle doesn’t fair well in this current system either because it’s being buried in taxes that the super rich find loopholes to not pay.

@kn tlt I guess we got there for two reason: 1. After WWII we had to have reinvent everything. And one of the main discussion with every new law or programm is: Equality and solidarity vs. Freedom and individualism. How much of our individual freedom are we willing to give up to achieve more equality? 2. (and this is the real reason we have things like health care and free college) What can be done to make workers more educated, healthier, well rested and more motivated to serve corporations? How do we keep them silenced and content?

I currently have broken and impacted, infected wisdom teeth! I’ve lost the ability to bite down and chew on the left part of my face. Yes, I’m employed but not well enough to where I can afford healthcare and haven’t been on the job long enough. The previous employer I had allowed me to work, cry on the job from pain and nearly die from lack of help. No one simply put, gives a damn in this country when and where it matters. I’ve been turned down for help, I made $28 too much, I was put on a waiting list to nowhere at a low cost clinic, still too expensive for me. I was turned down at another clinic for an antibiotic because they don’t deal with dental issues. I had a sinus infection at that time that spread from the teeth due to the infection but they refused to help me. It’s dammed if you do, dammed if you don’t. I simply feel dammed in this nation!

Wasabito Burrion. As an Australian, I also recently had a tooth extracted by a "public" dentist - dental is not fully covered here in Australia, but out of pocket cost was $28.50, and I'm very happy with both the care and the cost. I couldn't afford to be self employed in the US with their medical system (I'm in my 50's and have a couple of long term medical conditions), so I would either be a total burden on the system or dead in the USA.

A study in Australia reported that people paying for private care were over tested and more exposed to intrusive medical care than their public counterpoints. In some cases the report questioned the value of the some procedures against less intrusive surgical procedures. More testing and surgical procedures means a higher insurance cost to the customer. Medicine in general, focuses on pharmaceutical and surgical solutions over dietary, traditional and alternative treatments, easily accessible on the internet. Is the medical establishment increasing the cost of medical treatment for things such as cataracts by ignoring or limiting the range of medical solutions to their orthodox exclusive training? I think so!

The means of production for an individual is their time and effort. Socialists want to claim that the public owns the means of production, so socialism is the public ownership of individual time and effort. Because the "public" is simply a word used to describe a group of individuals, and because time and effort cannot be divorced from its physical source, government must take on the role of caretaker of the public interest and assumes ownership of the individual.
