Are ASL and BSL Similar or Different? | A Conversation with Sign Say
Hey Signers! In this video we had the privilege to sit down with our neighbors across the pond to discuss the similarities and differences between ASL (American Sign Language) and BSL (British Sign Language). This really was a fun conversation where we did find similarities in many things, but as you will see towards the end, when trying to interpret the other language to English, we had our fair share of difficulties!
We loved working with Sign Say. Show them some love by visiting their website (signsay.co.uk). They offer great free and paid courses that you can take online. If you're interested in learning BSL definitely check them out.
If you're interested in learning ASL subscribe right here! We release new ASL videos every week (most of the time). You can also visit our website to sign up for our newsletter and more (learnhowtosign.org)

@@boppernostopper8598 sign languages were developed in the 1800s and no one really considered developing it as a universal language. Many ASL signs use the first letter of the word as part of the sign (water, wine, chocolate, family) which are different words in other languages. And sign languages were only recently recognized as “real” languages.

What a wonderful comparison. I have only found this video by accident today! (11-14-22). I would have great difficulty learning the British alphabet. I like the American alphabet because each letter "looks" like the letter (in most cases). ASL letters use only one hand. In BSL, there is a need to use both hands at times---just too difficult. My age and memory difficulties wouldn't have a thing to do with that, of course---LOL!! 😀

I remember back in school when I was a child these people came in the room after the teacher announced we had special visitors... handed out books.. pointed to what we should read it discussed our senses in addition The sixth Sense... I felt compelled to not look at them... they explained everyone's getting the books don't talk to anyone about what you're reading don't talk to each other about what you're reading they said individually while handing the books out.. maybe they're reading something different maybe they're not ..but then they pointed to this little paragraph where to read. Then they picked up the books and they left.. I wonder what that program was at the time and how often they were doing that.?

It is really traumatic to find out how bad and behind is USA compared to the UK and EU . If you are an adult in the USA and need Sign language you are not able to find a place to learn it . I am deaf , read lips and since pandemic started I have been looking for a place to learn ASL in Florida and I haven’t been able to find it . I do not need a degree in ASL . Even calling the local college, Miami Dade College , no one could give me information. Still looking to connect with the deaf community. I need to learn ASL because it is close to impossible to get help in medical facilities . It is really traumatic

Contribution I'm trying to make is to assist humanity a little more resilient.. and become aware of our cravings for food and drink.. we need to stop extrapolating what nutrition is for the foremost do not let anything pass the gate of entry without meeting criteria of desire. This helps chemical balance in the brain etc. To be more stable and resilient .. to perceive and conceive reality.... And don't force water.. a pet peeve of mine.. people are so effing stupid sometimes.. working science we have to live with it though.

My recurring childhood memory after being carried back to the room the grey alien apparently Id consider him tall gray alien.. as it seemed he was looking down from rather high around the corner.. at me explained formulating essence of words with his mind.. it's better this way... Didn't formulate words for this but he meant subdued state.. some very common Hallmark things were left as evidence on that particular encounter.. me across the bed slightly angled nude on top of folded sheets and clothes folded in the middle of the floor.. and then what seemed like levitated in the morning and dropped down onto the bed a bit.. I set up and said out loud calmly.. I must have been abducted.. my impression was the whole family was I was laying in the room with them downstairs before. And remembered the entering of the house by them.. was curled up looking away on the floor but could hear clearly the encounters my family was having.. discussion was made that I should stay there one of them watching me. But apparently I got to be one of the research subjects also.. what they did or didn't do to me I can't remember that part.. as of yet.. I guess that's my initial encounter.

That is a big question. Each country has such a rich history connected to their language so that would take something special away. Yes, a universal sign language would be great (which technically that is a universal system not a real language) but I don't think there should just be only one used around the world.
