ASL should be taught in schools on the elementary level that way we all can communicate with those who have to use it, that way there is no more languags barrier.

@@keriboehm740 I don’t really remember much from elementary I think it should be a part of the system from elementary till graduation so that anyone could carry on a full conversation with ease

@@publicadventures you remember how to read and write, therefore being taught ASL all through elementary would ingrain this type of language in you as well. Children have excellent memory, and learning ASL from a young age will increase ASL as a core language for all people. It will become an innate pathway of communicate that is natural without thought. Just like how you can write, spell & read without too much thought.

Love this conversation. ASL is for everyone! It starts with the deaf community and those who love ASL to spread this language.

Unfortunately if no one around you is able to sign it won't really help. I figure if I ever lose so much hearing that hearing aids don't help me anymore I'll just text with people. Even though my younger sister has actually lost more hearing than I have, no one in our family knows sign, so texting back and forth would be the easiest way to go. Plus we'll still be able to talk, since we grew up hearing. If you really think you want to use sign, try to get some family members to learn with you.

Although it may be hard at first, sign is a beautiful language with an amazing community attached to it. Don't believe those who say the good times in life are over, I promise you they aren't. You just have a new way of sharing them with those you love ♡

Being deaf is actually a blessing. You will learn intuitive to see what others won’t ever see. I’m a deaf Vietnam combat veteran. You are entering a whole new world. I can still,play guitar and 5 string banjo at an expert level.

Hey, i see it's been 9 months since you wrote this so maybe you are at the point where you have become deaf. I don't know what the people around you have made you feel like neither do I know what it must feel like or how I'm going to make you feel but I just hope you believe that this is not something for others to pity you or sympathize you about. It is alright and this will be a world you will slowly start exploring now. Finding various other ways of communication, although people would never let go of the opportunity to make you feel lesser than them. I just hope you know that it is the f world that is not inclusive enough and you are still perfect, as perfect a human can be. (The imperfect perfection XD) I don't know how I came across here or what I said made sense to you and in case I said something insensitive I apologise.

Hi! ASL is being counted as a foreign language credit, depending on the school of course. High schools are offering ASL, mostly in the bigger cities/towns and high schools are also connecting with local community colleges to allow students to learn ASL there. It’s happening!

I just had a similar experience today. an elderly man came in to the store, and started signing something. i felt so bad I couldn't understand or communicate, hence why I'm here.

This was my reason for wanting to learn ASL, a deaf customer came in where I was working and I never want to not be able to at least try and communicate again with someone!

I went to a store where everyone who works there is deaf and I felt awful not knowing ASL😅

this same thing happened to me a couple days ago at work. i know basic signs (hello, yes, no, thank you, goodbye, etc) but i couldn't even tell him prices without typing it out

bro same, I work at Starbucks and when to gets busy it gets very stressful. Normally were able to greet everyone that walks in and be aware but it was so busy, after it cooled down the same guy I saw stand to the side for about 30-45 minutes came up to write something saying he didn't want to wait up the line. The whole time we just thought he was looking around, anyways I marked his order as one of my lunch markouts, hope next time see him I can surprise him😀

Are you a native English speaker? I want to learn ASL, but as I am not Advanced in English yet I am really afraid that learn ASL could hamper my performance in English, like make it difficult to learn complex sentences for example. Do you know if it could be a problem?

@@PatriciaAlves-rx4hr ASL has its own syntax. You shouldn't have problems if you have basic understanding of English.

@@Kim.K.Edwards It honestly depends on the person. I found Duolingo for Second Languages is very informative and structured to make learning fun and simple. As for ASL, I learned through many apps and watched RU-vid videos. Truthfully, With the Internet being what it is, Learning a language can be just as easy compared to learning how to do just about anything else. It takes time, And commitment, But once you start it's like riding a bike. At least for me anyways... 😂

Honestly I think Spanish should be more important for jobs and such. Not many people out there using ASL so the reality is it’s not that important. Definitely should not be mandatory.

@@GokuInstinct1 um no?? spanish speakers usually know english, if not they can learn, but if someone is deaf they cant just hear english :l cant read lips either bc of mask mandate. think.

ASL should count as wayyy more important than other curriculum.If you run into a deaf person anytime in your life you could make them feel comfortable communicating with them. Also, if you are in a life or death situation and you can't talk you could use sign language and it may save your life.

Even slower isn’t enough. She didn’t address the ‘you’, just ‘see’ and ‘later’; she didn’t address her finger positions around the eye for ‘see’. She didn’t have the 5 things to watch out for displayed while going through it. My hearing is going downhill fast - this video left me so frustrated and with a terrible headache….I stopped at the second sign for either ‘see you later’, or with the skipped ‘you’ and only ‘see’ and ‘later. Didn’t even address how the second phrase to be signed was for proper ASL syntax, or not.

@@Yuna-lk2ns There's lots of books you can buy that do nothing but give you mnemonics on Kanji 😅 Most Jap classes also use mnemonics. Even native Jap classes in primary school use mnemonics. Did you study completely by yourself without any outside interaction? How'd you even do that?

My MIL is a CODA and we taught my son signs (eat drink, sleep, toilet, play, milk, cracker, etc.). No tantrums or "terrible twos." It was awesome.

I love seeing people teaching their kids signing because 1. This works 2. Communication with the hearing impaired and 3. We learn with actions and visuals far before we learn vocalized language (look at any monkey or hell any animal) body language is our first language.

I want to be this kind of parent but sadly I’m not. I wanted to teach my daughter sign language but I don’t even know if 🥲

This is incredible. Baby sign langue is a great outlet for littles one to express themselves early on. Keep it up. You can also check out babysignlanguge.com We worked with them recently and they have a huge dictionary of baby signs.

It's remarkable how early and easily babies pick up sign. It made it very easy to baby sit my niece when I instantly knew what she wanted.

Pugsabi yes, it was so surprising to me how quickly he has taken to signing. If I’d known, I’d have started a year ago!

My 6 yr old son is 100% nonverbal. He's never said a single word and has rejected all forms of communication up until a couple months ago when he started showing some interest in signing. He's now able to sign a small variety of words and is still learning more. I think our happiest moment was the first time he signed I love you to his dad and I. It was the first time in his life he could actually say I love you back to us. He has severe stage 3 autism so he's delayed with his learning and has a lot of difficulty doing certain things. He can't just do a sign a few times and be good at it. Things are much harder for him because of his autism and literally every single time he does a sign he has to look at his hands and think hard about what fingers go where. It's like he has no muscle memory or something. He's trying so hard though and we couldn't be more proud of him! We had such a warped view of autism when he was first diagnosed. I knew of one child that had it and they had horrible behavior problems, we're violent, never slept etc. I only ever heard negative things about this poor child which is sad. So when we got the diagnosis that it was autism and he had the most severe form I expected the worst and boy was I ever wrong. My son is the sweetest most happiest little boy I have ever met. He loves sleeping and tells us every night in a nonverbal way that it's bed time and he sleeps all night. Even when he wakes up he won't wake us up until about 9ish. He's obsessed with photography and cars. His favorite thing to do is stand at the window watching traffic and taking pics of each vehicle that passes. He will do this for ours if we let him. He's just such an incredible child and we wouldn't change a thing about him. His lack of communication has always made me sad but now that he finally is able to sign some, we couldn't be more happier. It's amazing how something so simple can completely transform your life!

Jump back into it. I'm always surprised at what my brain has retained when I think I have forgotten a subject. The neural pathways are still there I promise.

I don’t k ow anyone deaf but I feel that everyone should be able to communicate easily. I’m only ten but I am determined to learn sign language. I already know how to sign what my name and age is and how to ask how r u or how to sign that it’s nice to meet u.

Also if I do ever meeting a deaf person that I want to be friends with it would come in handy 😊

It would be nice if she signed what she was saying when she is talking. Knowing the alphabet and numbers is good, too. It is also important to know that the deaf do not generally use articles of speech and that many signs are contextual.

I've been schooled in French, modern Greek, Spanish, German (speak, read, and write in all of those), and ASL (signing, glossing, and interpreting). I've also learned Italian, Russian, and Japanese. English is my native language. There's always room for yet another language.

I'm autistic, too; I talked late (and, once I started talking, it took some time to get to the point where people outside of my family could understand me well), so I only signed for a couple years. I can talk most of the time now, although I'm often told that I speak too quickly, and I still default to signing or texting when I'm nonverbal.

Is it easier to learn ASL than English for babies?

If you learn the alphabet along with these 25 signs, you're well on your way! If you don't know a sign, you can spell the word. These 25 are a large part of the signs I used with a deaf family member.

Respectfully, don't call deaf people your "special friends." They're not children. They're adults who can't hear. (And sometimes children who can't hear, but children don't like to be patronized either.)
