Asmodeus - D&Ds Greatest Villain

@@The_NaturalOnes It's from a really old module from first edition I think. There are some more recent (only twenty years old!) mentioning of this lore you can find by googling Jazirian and Ahriman.

That version of Asmodeus was named Ahriman, one of the primal serpents of Law. Along with the other serpent of law, Jazirian they shaped the multiverse from chaos. Asmodeus was also rumored to be Mok'sylk, the Great Serpent who was the literal personification of magic and taught the witch Mazzel and her son, Vecna. Mok'sylk then used Vecna by whispering arcane secrets and eldritch instructions which led to Vecna breaking into Sigil and reshaping the DnD multiverse from 2e to 3e/3.5e it always amazes me how all the lore vids on Asmodeus and Vecna neglect this portion of the lore. Asmodeus is Ahiriman and Ahiriman will never be a God, he is one of the Ancient Brethren that predate the creation of the multiverse and of the current crop.pf deities. He is actually hiding and waiting to reshape the multiverse another time and will continue to do so until the cosmos is what he envisions. This is the lore I grew up, played through and live. To each their own it just saddens me that one of the coolest stories in DnD history is never mentioned and will be most likely forgotten by the current generation of players

@@The_NaturalOnes it's from the Guide to Hell book (pag 1-12 i think) for AD&D It's also cited in the Manual of the Planes for 3.0 in the Baator section

Ya I think this is spell plague lore where asmodeus like absorbed azuth and ascended, I briefly mentioned it but didn’t get in depth. Ya I’m dnd you aren’t necessarily granted deity status, you can kind of achieve it

Kind of… they were never called demons or devils, they actually changed all mention of them. Devils became the Baatezu I believe and Demons became Tanar’ri. But no “demons or devils.” Kind of a technicality but true!

Yeah 2e went to great lengths to never use the term demon or devil in 2e. It was in response to the Satanic Panic and the idea that DND was getting kids into devil worship etc. So they became Bazatue (sp?) and Tanna'ri instead.

Ya he’s not as lame as I may make him out to be, I think the whole trial is a bit of a left turn and a divergence from his story. And yes the whole story is a device to show how he is very evil yet calculating and lawful, he did all of these terrible things within the bounds he was allowed. I like the shard of the abyss story better personally, also gives more context to blood war

Yeah DND really took one for the whole RPG team by getting people largely over that hump.

@@The_NaturalOnes One DnD is basically the same as 5th edition, more or less 5.5. They've said that they don't want to make any big changes to 5th edition because it's so popular and accessible

Yeah officially they're not calling it a new edition but they're going to keep tweaking the lore and rules.

@@The_NaturalOnes Sorry but to me it was little more then an admittedly successful, yet none the less desperate attempt, to get the video game millenial generation involved. And threw alot of OG Gamers like myself off of DND for a while.

I've heard that from some of the original DnD'ers, then of course 4e/5e was polarizing to a lot of the people who loved 3e. I guess thats just how it goes, are you actively playing any editions?
