@@Martin-jm8wi I think making a semi-shitty game can give a good start to the devs whenever they begin the development, so that the negative feedbacks or the criticisms from the test players would actually help the developers to point out some flaws and fix/revolutionize the system as synergistically as possible. Though, it depends on the developer’s attitude whenever they can take it as granted or not. Yoshi-P is the greatest example for this phenomenon. It’s also common to most indie developers.

I wouldn't say WoW solved the formula for many years. They had like 80% of it down between vanilla and Wrath, then moved further and further away from it with future expansions. What kept them going dominantly for so long was momentum and the player numbers, the general community, and of course the brilliant world/IP. But they continually destroyed each of these things more and more until today

@@3lit3gn0m3 I don't know, the topic has been discussed to death already and I'm not even convinced there is a renaissance. FF14 is not a new game at all, New World is just Amazon game Studios throwing a shot at every genre possible (and being the only one that seems like it's gonna stick), Bless Unleashed is the 10th release of the same game, Lost Ark has been around for nearly a decade... Ashes of Creation is the only game coming out that is bringing any sort of innovation to the table and that's what, 5 years away from release? Same with Diablo 4 which is going have MMO elements? So what the fuck are they supposed to talk about, a bunch of old games being released in new regions, growing in popularity after years on the market or the 15th release of the same game? Sure, that's enough content for a 10 minute video but hardly an actual renaissance.

If you look at all the MMORPGs that are still up there, I feel like they are fueled purely by the die hard fans of that game's franchise. FFXIV, WoW, SWTOR, ESO, and GW2 all had previous IPs to entice people to flock to those games and not leave. LoL's MMORPG will be the same. MTG said they were coming out with a MMORPG, but it came out more like Diablo 3 instead and they changed the genre to whatever Diablo 3's is. But I feel if WotC was actually serious about a MMORPG in the MTG universe, they'd have so much content for over a decade based on how vast their world is. They have the money.

MMOs wouldn't be nearly as popular now if no one ever made an equivalent to OSRS and Classic WoW. These weren't just "good MMOs", these were standout achievements. Lightning in a bottle. Their design wasn't just "good". It was phenomenal. I cannot stress enough how special these games are and how much inherent creativity they have. Newer games can look as pretty as they want; they'll never capture what these MMOs had without devs of the same mindset. "Cut and paste" and "formula" has both everything and nothing to do with their success - every little bit of these games is the same tier of masterpiece. While post-raid endgame in later phases is debatable, that is not even 5% of the game's content to the average player when the games originally came out. Most players did not do the same exact thing every week and didn't pay for gold or levels nearly as often; in other words, they constantly immersed themselves in the original game as intended and had a blast. That is not something one can do in just any MMO.
@memitim171

@derp derpin True, they had a game any idiot could play at a time the internet was exploding in popularity and then they had a half decent TV advert (compared to the just plain embarrassing ones most games had at the time) the marketing team knew what they were doing but there was nothing original about the game at all, all the pieces were already there, they just glued them together and put some polish on it.

They messed the spirit of the game real bad with Abyssea. FF11's cataclysm of sorts. FFXI is still very good, but it pales on how it was around the 2005-2009 golden era. this game was built around partying for leveling and hard quests... a shame they dropped that concept... However If you hate partying with other players (or lacks RL time to do so), the current version offers both the old content and newer content, and there's still an end-game of sorts. Takes a while to get into it... very steep learning curve.

I had friends who i played with that were solely dedicated to being doctors, politicians etc and did very little adventuring but all hung out in cantinas or guild halls to just socialize. And they loved it. They took their role seriously and went about their taks of buffing people or improving player cities while the rest of us were out adventuring. FF14 does something similiar in giving players other things to engage with outside of the core gameplay loop and shallow collectible grinds.

Josh missed an incredibly important point at the crux of all of this. The meta didn't shift. WoW did. WoW strove more and more away from the proven success into attempts to foist new systems on players that they didn't want, timegate players to force playtime, etcetera. That's why even before the crash, there was a decline, and why other companies started noticing and prepping their own entries. WoW was no longer the meta winner. A combination of incompetent and malicious design had ruined it, and the companies with the money to make MMOs could see that. Players had already started to see it too. Streamers switching and the lawsuit just helped more players to see it faster.
@stoneymahoney9106
@stoneymahoney9106 3 года назад
His audience is painfully away from what happened to WoW, it's been hammered into our brains continually over the last 3 months or so. WoW no longer being the meta winner is, by itself, inconsequential (quality was already inevitably suffering due to talent drain at Blizz) and the long-term entrenched player base needed a catalyst to propel them out of their comfortable little community towards other products. FF14 is the main beneficiary of this due to it's long-term co-existance with WoW during the slow decline combined with a marked similarity making it the obvious default choice for WoW refugees, while the current crop of new MMOs on the horizon are greatly differentiated from both WoW and FF14, not because of anything that's happening now, development cycles are far too long for that to be the case, but because that's how you make an impact in a saturated, stagnant market. The big PR pushes behind New World et al. right now is an attempt by their teams to capture detached players and keep them in community-limbo until they can release.

there was a Asmongold clip a while back that compared modern MMOs to amusement parks, I think its pretty accurate, and also why people dont care about MMOs. this idea that a revival is happening is bullshit. MMOs are dead to the wider public, the MMO players are just finding decent acceptable new games to throw their money at. WoW was a world wide phenomenom, people played it, enjoyed it, realized what it was, will never go back. I hope people who like the new MMOs have fun, but the small idiotic window of relevancy is over, till they can ADVANCE the framework of gameplay. *another reason i think Asmon is correct about WoW 2.0, it needs a new INSANELY STRONGER ENGINE and better servers the holy trinity has ruined invention, the concept of server lag has limited the size of engagements, the CONCEPT of a giant brain dead mob that shits out attacks and its called a boss cause it has MILLIONS of hp.... yeah. i really do think that its just a bland side-effect of 1) Covid, people being at home and 2) MMOs are in the hype right now, just because there is so much upcoming MMO-stuff compared to other games. Especially with the battle royale-hype gone, there currently is a small "void" waiting for the next big thing. My prediction is that MMOs will be actually super dead in 2 years. New World will not live on in its hype, and if this happens, Amazon will probably drop it when they cant make any more money off it. Ashes of Creation will launch the 13th Alpha version, and WoW will probably be "dead". (I think at some point Blizzard will just try to completely rebrand the warcraft-games into something completely different to make profit. (which would probably be the right decision). FF14 will probably still do well, but not with the hype-power it has right now. Itll be alright. (These are all predictions of course, but i don't get the current thought of "revival" at all, since its just around people leaving the former big player to the next big player, and other companies pumping out "Alphas/Betas"

I remember following this youtube channel that was covering SWTOR right before that came out in 2011, it's sort of like Preach was for WoW, a channel that talked about SWTOR stuff and then in 2013 they announced they were leaving SWTOR to join this Wildstar team and they were gonna become an official wildstar caster or some shit and I was like.. "fine, I'm out of here, not gonna play that game". and then Wildstar died and SWTOR is still alive and kicking. to be fair, it's been 7 years or so, I don't remember the name of their channel. it was a couple, I remember that much.

I'm not sure I'd say PSO was an MMO. It was an online co-op ARPG, but I don't feel like it quite made the jump to MMO. It was still an excellent game though, Sonic Team did a superb job of tailoring an ARPG to the limited inputs possible from a controller. @MenrvaS
@MenrvaS 3 года назад
Graphic is debatable, but the combat is actually pretty hack and slash-ish with different combinations, so its very engaging and fun indeed. The character creation is not the best anymore since Chinese games already took that customization to a whole new level. There are many things BDO did right, especially the feeling of exploration. Unfortunately, other designs drag it all down to hell. "Real BDO players will not ever recommend BDO to anyone" because the game was made to sink its claws extremely quickly with impressive visuals and well-designed manipulations. After some investment and time, BDO is nothing more than a pretty torture device you refuse to escape.

Lol this video shows how little Strife Hayes actually knows about both ESO and The Elder Scrolls in general. As for his topic .. pvp niche game - Ashes, game with identity crisis - New World, another incarnation of Bless, for now million dollar sci-fi scam - Star Citizen. There will be shake up, as WoW finally pissed off their players. But reneissance ? I don't think so. MMO's exist, it's not like cRPG's which got murdered by publishers for about decade and then immidiately had resurgance once people got to kickstarters. Shake up will just mean WoW having issues, which benefit competitors. However that doesn't mean any reinesscance. Imagine if competition would replace WoW - what then ? It won't probably prove either FFXIV or ESO to be superior, as it just snached disgruntled WoW playerbase slipping in. It will just mean WoW has issues to a point of people having enough of it. You won't have ESO or FFXIV clones as at core they both started going from long established IP's - not exactly aiming to appeal to MMO crowds, but rather searching to drag into MMO landscape NON MMO playerbases. Something that none of 'reinesscance' candidates Hayes have. Why these big IP's did it ? Well ... playerbase would be stable and loyal, they have come for IP itself rather then MMO. Way more then MMO Andy who is just always looks to be 'part of next big thing' and leave when hype drops. I doubt any of the 'candidates' will appeal to majority of people, they might appeal to Josh Strife Hayes but he is just another talking head. However how will that be different then all these smaller MMO's being ruled over by big top ones on any other day ? And for Asmongold wish that there would be just 1 game and everyone in it ... I don't think this will happen. Probably like never again.

Newsflash Wow always sucked and will continue to suck , there were mmo's that were 100x better than wow , but weren't 3d or technically as impressive or people didn't play them , because they wanted to play wow. Wow was the fortnite of Boomer era , all the shitters played it without realizing it's a HORRIBLE mmo. NOT only was wow BAD within itself , it ruined the MMO landscape for YEARS. People still think wow used to be good , I guess you call them "classic Andies" right? Wow is bad period my dudes. Even today I don't see any of the available or coming mmo's as "fixed" mechanics and game-play wise. They just don't get it and people who play mmo's also don't get it , they're so brainwashed by the past 10 yrs of crap anything slightly better is a "sensation". I have tried wow and knew it was bad , I've tried FF14 and it's BARELY ENJOYABLE , the new worlds and ashes etc , look old before they are released and their vision is still within the same mindset that bad mmo's have.

It still kinda bugs me when EVE Online is not mentioned in videos like these (Josh's). EVE Online is 18 years old, one year older than WoW, and its still just chugging along doing its thing. It is one of the very few non-terrestrial fantasy games so it does very much fill a niche. And while it never had the numbers WoW did, it has always had a solid group of dedicated players that love the game. And then many of us that while we don't play anymore for one reason or another still love reading the stories that the come out of the game because of the player politics. Also I don't know of any other game company that helped form a council of players from around the world (named the Council of Stellar Management or CSM) that are voted on by the players themselves, then flown on company dollar for a week long stay in Iceland (once a year I think) to have a meeting and talk about player concerns and shit that needs to be addressed and they work with the CCP (the devs) on trying to find solutions to problems. In my eyes CCP is the best at working with their player base to make the game better.

I dont think it's a renaissance, but a simple "normalisation" of percentages of players. Players leak from WoW to MMOs which are better at something they play for. For example if you like story it's SWTOR, if you like lore and immersion it's ESO, if you want WoW Retail but better, it's FF14. It's not a revival, it's just shift of player masses. Huge amount of people leak from WoW to other MMOs and this gives a lot of exposure for MMO's as a whole, which leads to slight growth in popularity for the genre.

You have to take out the money of making video games (for example by getting rid of intellectual property) so that only passionate developers stay that don't wan't to press as much money out of players as they can and are just working as a kind of artist that wan't to give/create something good in their free time. That passionate developers can build up new "developer communities" like the old "artist communities". (And there are examples for such projects as "Skywind" or "Skyblivion"...so the argument: "there would be NO more developement without money" is wrong). The game "industry" (focus here on "industry") has to be fully destroyed to bring back passion. Will there be less new video games then? Of course...much less indeed, but that will be games the developers put their heart in and that will be worth playing it. And you won't find an ingame store in that games, 'cause without intellectual property everyone can just copy that game and run their own servers...and if one server contains microtransactions....you can just hop to another server without them. Microtransactions, Cross-Game-Promotion (e.g. buying Game A and getting Pet/Mount in Game B) and that stuff just won't happen.

I played EVerQuest for years after it was released. Ultima Online was trash. Wasn’t even a proper mmorpg. It was basically an MMo Diablo. Mad bots and just chaos. Little isometric characters running around everywhere no clear goals just killing things and dog piling on bosses. EQ made mmorpgs proper how we know them today. WoW perfected this recipe. People have always loved and wanted to play MMOs. Im an osrs player, veteran since 02. But I just had NOT been able to find a new game that kept my attention for anywhere close to as long as runescape has/still does. DDO is great, and I highly recommend it. SWG private servers are up, and are great. But the big thing theyre missing are a big, heavy, dedicated playerbase. The thing is, these games are great because they came out BEFORE WOW did. And they were great for it, because after WOW started to dominate, that became the blueprint for the entire genre for so long. And even these old games, famously Runescape, and to a lesser-known crowd SWG, changed to be more like WOW and it killed them. I always wondered where the MMO genre would be if only games like SWG stuck their ground and showed everyone how great other games that weren't WOW clones could be. No game will be the "WOW killer" if its another WOW game with a reskin, even if that reskin is pretty. People will just play WOW instead. The bug 5 MMOs are all unique in their own, big ways. I hope other games continue to take chances and pave their own way into this community. These guys hit every point Ive been saying for years and years now.

9:00 -- wrong thinking. "just copying" is not enough. WOW was copied many times and none of those games beat WOW (back in the days). Because why people would go to new game with all same stuff? Its the same as thinking if you copy Facebook now, somehow all current Facebook users will go to you. Why would they do that? How your project better if you "just copy"? So "no", i dont think that just copying someone successful is a way how projects become successful.

MMOs are like life. You have a character, and your investment socially, gameplay-wise, etc., while online, goes into that character. When you see movies that depict futuristic VR games, or when you hear stupid fantastical shit like "simulation theory", they're the same thing as MMOs. The game of the future will be an MMO. This is why people are addicted to MMOs. When the equivalent of an ultimate PC in today's terms can be bought for a few hundred dollars in the future, there will without a doubt be MMOs linked with cryptocurrencies that will bring in trillions. It's obvious to see. Crypto is a huge factor in big companies investing in MMOs for the future. You can't turn down milking money while also building your own currency. If you were a CEO and were presented with this potential, it would be obvious that this is the way to go. Just can't make that kind of money in other styles of games.

I feel MMO's may be on a comeback because the ones that were the most successful either got better or imploded (FF14 and WoW). Now there's a power vacuum and space for new games to be seen and try new things to set themselves apart from the rest. Hopefully the expectations of MMO gamers remain high now that a lot of them can see other games exist beyond WoW. A king should have to earn their crown to keep their crown, not just have word of mouth. I think it's a good wake up call. If the mightiest mmo can fall for being sub par, any mmo can. So the only options are just do better or disappear.
