I think what the one girl was saying was control as in control over her finances (and by extension her life). She doesn't have to worry about whether something is paid for, or if she has enough to do something, or if she can rely on someone if she is the one paying all the bills. It also, as I mentioned, is kind of like having an extended control on life, because she can leave if the relationship becomes volatile, because she was the one paying for everything, she has nothing to worry about if she leaves, she knows she can take care of herself.
