The FFXIV community is very unique vs. other gamers in a couple regards; (as a WoW vet of 16+ years, and an FFXIV player also) 1. They HATE spoilers!!! FFXIV players generally, in my experience will actively avoid anything that will spoil the MSQ until after they have completed it. Including watching even their favorite steamers or getting on RU-vid or even Twitter! 2. Once they have completed the MSQ, then they will actively watch others play it. I've found, that they get enjoyment from seeing others reactions to the story. Also, sometimes seeing others reactions to the MSQ is even more impactful because at times, the emotional impact is greater after you've let the story 'sink-in'. 3. A significant difference in the communities is that in WoW there is a PTR, players not only play PTR for testing purposes, they get in just to see what is coming from a lore perspective. Sites like Wowhead post nearly everything on WoW and datamine the shit out of it, and WoW players actively watch spoilers and, at least used to gobble-up Lore speculation like ravenous wolves! FFXIV does not have a PTR, nearly every aspect of the story is told in-game, so speculation is significantly smaller than in WoW. I don't need to expand on the lore part, we all know what I'm talking about 4. With that being said, WoW has always been significantly larger draw than FFXIV, even if FF is growing, it will never have nearly the viewership or creators that WoW has, because again, FFXIV players do not go to content for speculation, or PTR information, or anything that would spoil nearly any aspect of the game. Not to say that speculation does not exist, there are several great channels focused primarily on Lore and speculation, but if you compared WoW vs. FFXIV speculation, it is not even close to comparable. 5. WoW generates more money. Plain and simple. WoW also has the honor of being the first MMO to break into the 'mainstream'. Not to say Runescape and others were not great, but they were not the sensation that WoW was. I remember when WoW came out, it was insane and freaking awesome! FFXIV honestly had the worst possible debut and was an uphill battle from then on. 6. Square Enix and the Developers are very clear about and communicate to their players that they do not expect them to be actively subbed all the time. They encourage you to play other games when you feel you have completed the content you enjoy. I have found the biggest difference in general is most WoW players are WoW players and FFXIV players are just video gamers (not to say there are not allot of FFXIV players that only play FFXIV, however more FF players play other games and more WoW players only play WoW). I have found that when I played WoW, that was literally my only game since 2004 except when I was deployed to parts of the world with no internet!, and now, since playing FFXIV, I don't feel bad not logging in, I don't loose progression if I take a few weeks off. As an example, I have played FFXIV, Lost Ark, Crusader Kings III, Civ 6, Elden Ring, ESO since leaving WoW and am realizing how much more fun gaming I am having again. Just my observation and from speaking and learning from my Free Company, many FFXIV players are the same. --- I could write a Phd. Thesis on the differences in the communities and how the communities dictate how, why and how much the game is consumed media wise. I know from a very personal standpoint, that I only gave FFXIV a chance because Zach gave it a shot, and I was frustrated with WoW (and honestly had been for years). Now that I am part of the community, I have learned allot about what I want out of gaming. I have logged into WoW a couple of times, and each time I do, I am starkly reminded of why I don't really play anymore, other than grinding, their is no other, say 'evergreen' content to do. There could be physiological research papers dedicated to the WoW playerbase and Blizzard business model on things like addiction, addictive gameplay (skinner box), etc... Statistics do not always explain everything. I have found from personal experience that the community culture is the primary driving force behind a great deal of the differences at this point. IDK, maybe I'm completely wrong... actually, I'm prob wrong on allot, I'm just an old fart gamer... shit, I miss my Atari 2600 and Sega Genesis LOL

FFXIV is a story driven RPG first and foremost, while also being an MMO. It focuses on being the best RPG it can be, and considers how best to incorporate MMO necessities into that. People want to experience the story for themselves because it's so good, which is why they don't want it spoiled. This results in higher engagement in the game and lower viewership, people are experiencing it for themselves instead of watching someone else experience it. WoW is an MMO first and foremost, and the story... is there. No one REALLY cares about it, even if they do it's not told very well, and it's been retconned or simply ignored so many times it's hard to keep track of what the story is, so people have to find out from lore videos. Even if people are interested in the lore of WoW, it's become so convoluted that getting the full story from just the game is nearly impossible, especially with some of the lore being told in other forms of media.

I got into FFXIV around the time Asmon did, though the game itself quickly hooked me after that. It's basically one of the best RPG stories I've ever experienced, period. Maybe even the best, when taken as a whole through Endwalker. And I was someone who didn't give a single shit about JRPGs going in, and still largely doesn't aside from this game - even the other FF games. Cleared the savage tier and found insanely funny ppl to raid with a similar attitude like me xD. Now I'm taking a break waiting for next content, but god did I have a fun time. Eventho the start has been rough (holy moly learning these combos man), but I'm gonna play this game forever FFXIV fans should be more open to people not loving "their" story so much, it's kinda funny how it's completely acceptable to not know your basic combo at lvl 90 but skipping the story is a massive nogo. I started XIV in September of 2020, and it gave me the ability to leave wow. I raided casually in Legion and enjoyed it. I raided Heroic in BfA and got burned out. I raided in classic and got burned out, and bullied away by my guild. XIV helped me accept that I'm just not that skilled, and I get hyper-competitive to compensate for my lack of skill. I burn myself out trying to be something I'm not, and wow was encouraging me to keep self-destructing. XIV gave me permission to calm down, savor the journey, and not feel like I had to do things I didn't want to. There's a Moogle event going on right now. I haven't touched it hardly at all. I don't want to grind dungeons right now. I'm allowed to not want to grind dungeons. I'm doing my beast tribes for old xpacs, and purple scrips to prep for 6.1 doh/dol pentamelding, and that's totally allowed. It's what I feel like working on, and so it's what I'm doing.
@leonie7754
@leonie7754 2 года назад
This post needs more likes - XIV is the mmo best suited for casual, low-stress play. Fun first, whatever that means for you! WoW had nothing for me because I'm not hyper competitive and didn't enjoy grinding dungeons and raids. Endgame for me was rep farming, get a few mounts and max pvp gear then I was out of content. 3 months tops and I'd quit for another year. Until I played FFXIV during WoD and discovered I want a variety of content for all types of players, hell I even do more dungeons and raids now as they are shorter and get me good rewards! Not being skilled at something with no real world application isn't anything to be ashamed about. It's not like anyone says "well, he has 3 phds, knows 4 languages and invented warp drive, but he is shit at WoW - what a loser" 😂 If everyone stopped gaming because they aren't good, the industry would take a nose dive. Wow is now a game of almost only elite players and those desperate to become elite players because of this. Games are meant to be fun first and foremost and there are many types of game catering to different types of 'fun'. If you are not having fun, don't play that game! Do what is fun, it's your free time. Maybe it's WoW, maybe it's FFXIV, maybe it's both or neither, maybe it's not mmos!

As someone that's a long time turbo nerd for FFXIV I really dislike the obnoxious extremists because while their the minority they sound so much louder amplified all the people just happily playing the game. As for Twitch I do think its due people not wanting to be spoiled for the story, the developers are encouraging of players to take breaks, the views have been spread heavily across twitch, youtube, and the Japanese site NicoNico, and in general people are just playing the game so they don't feel the need for streamers to frequently create their content. Overall I'm just happy to play FFXIV and that more people are too. I really wish the extremely loud extremists should calm down a bit though since it clearly causes an adverse effect.

Asmon opened the door for me. I had a blast and the story was amazing. It has many faults but the story is not one. It is so far on another level to WoW or others that its not to be compared. I wont go back to WoW but they do do many things better. The UI, Launcher, Website and Glamour/Transmog system is awful in FFXIV. I hope they improve these things because I will be staying. It is super embarrassing to look at the faults in FFXIV as new people must be put off. I hope Asmon comes back as I would love to see him experience the story but it will be hard for him to play it all I think. Not very stream friendly in my eyes, but many have done it.

I wouldn't necessarily say the Glamour/Transmog system in FF14 is awful. In fact, I'd say it's quite good with the dye options and the vast amount of pieces from random sets that surprisingly work well together with other pieces you would never think would work. I will admit they need a better system for logging pieces you want to keep like WoW does where you can go to a Transmogrifier and all the pieces you've collected are instantly there without the need of having to save them in a dresser and take them out whenever you want to use them

I have been playing Genshin on and off since release. It is a great game, but I don't know how much Asmon would like playing it on stream. My greatest enjoyment in Genshin came from just exploring the world and not knowing what types of new enemies or puzzles I would find. Correct me if I am mistaken, but I think I recall Asmon saying during Elden Ring that he did not like that unguided/aimless aspect of the game for streaming purposes.
@Bankai90

He doesn't really like to "look stupid" on twitch and having a bunch of people laughing about him. So games with no direction just stress him out more and he loses fun playing. But pretty sure he got used to Elden Ring faster than expected and enjoyed it a LOT.

Lore and glamour-focused FFXIV player, I wish I could have seen Asmon's first reactions to Warring Triad normal and extreme tbh. Sophia was one of the fights that drew me into the game after being surrounded by ugly and uncreative content for a while, and while I know the fight now holy hell did she kick my ass at first lmao. Also straight up, I think there's value in both the fight being visually interesting just from a cinematic standpoint and seeing players have unique experiences trying to figure fights out. The human experience of the fight is what makes it fun, whether things go well or badly.

The game itself is great but i feel so boring because i play alone. But playing it while watching Lord Asmongold played FFXIV, it felt that the game is way way greater than before, what most important and confusing for me is that even i played alone, i didn't feel the game is boring. The whole video, I was fascinated at the console UI. It doesn’t seem that playing on console was a hindrance to the player’s performance. I’ve always wondered if playing on console was harder than playing on PC. But hearing that many JP players/raiders play on console. Then watching the gameplay in this video, it does seem as if playing on console isn’t a hindrance.

Not a hindrance at all. The default crosshotbar setup is very basic, but you just gotta customize it a little bit (no different than how the default m/kb hotbars kind of suck and most people customize them). Also learn your targeting options. Once you do that, not only is it not a hindrance, but there are many players who've switched from m/kb to controller because they actually played better on it. I should know - I'm one of them!
@gysahlfields7506
@gysahlfields7506 2 года назад
You can play in PC with Controller and on Console with Mouse and Keyboard. Platform does not matter. Controller is perfect for this game, if that is what you mean. They have won awards for the Cross Hotbar (Controller option) and they have not even patented the system even though they could, just for other MMORPGs to fully use it and progress the genre. One of the reasons all other MMORPGs suck so much. They don't even use a perfect system that is there that FINAL FANTASY XIV innovated for the whole industry.

I completed heavensward and like every other MMO I've played I realized my circumstances would always prevent me from doing more than sidequests and getting carried through the easy versions of all the raids. Everything I wanted to do would just be a chore for people who were further along that they're only there for to get some dailies done. Playing it isn't like watching someone play it. No one has time to sit in the raid and discuss your reaction to something you thought was cool or anything like that. I just can't play a game where I have to feel like a burden to everyone until I grind half a decade of content. Squeenix really did an awesome job with this game. I played it back when it first came out for a while and it was a night and day difference, but I still don't feel like I ever really found this "social" aspect of MMO's everyone talks about.

FFXIV trends on socials that allow images and memes..... and i think that is the main reason it pops off on twitter and reddit. But in game its all about role playing and the discords are pretty big too. Its not a particularly fun game to watch though (even during race to world first its just ok).... its more fun to play and talk about than to watch on stream.

As a relatively new FF14 player (milking the free trial for all it's worth) I avoid watching most related content on Twitch and RU-vid for one simple reason - spoilers. A friend of mine got me to start playing FF14 and I burned out on the ARR content a couple of times, so when Asmon started playing I watched his streams religiously right up until he got to the same point I was up to in the MSQ (~lv40 in Coerthas) at which point I stopped watching and started playing again. I do watch some FF14 content, but it's more general stuff like Zepla's "Housing Savage" video that has no relation to the story line.
@annahenrietta9517
@annahenrietta9517 2 года назад
I suppose the reason FFXIV trends on Twitter but not on Twitch is mainly because the players are just players, and not streamers. With other games like Fortnite, WoW and so on everyone is trying to do it as a job , ( wow less now I suppose ). And the FFXIV players are just happy to play in their free time and don't aspire at doing it "professionally" or as a job. Same thing with SWOTOR , there are always people playing the game , and the starting areas, and honestly pretty much all others are populated. Because people just play through the stories , which are arguably the best in the genre, for roleplay, or just because they love star wars and there's no other MMO to play like it.

I've said it to friends, Asmond isn't responsible but him joining was the tipping point. As a huge streamer like he is, he got eyeballs on the game, he showed people it was playable, and frankly I think he was the first genuinely entertaining high profile streamer to touch the game. FF14 has been building up a lot of steam, and with the current situation - beyond just it's surge on twitch there's also the plague trapping everyone in their homes for over a year and it's biggest competitor deciding to commit suicide - it's finally reaching critical mass.
@MapleLunii

I think most people don't watch FF on Twitch because of story spoilers and stuff. And as far as raiding content goes, WoW has the more enfranchised fanbase for that since it's been prevalent since the beginning of it's lifespan. Of course I don't know either of these things for sure, but that's what I reckon it is. I've personally played 8000+ hours of FF14 (playing since 2014) but barely ever watch it on Twitch because I have more fun playing the game than watching it. Some games just make better stream games and some don't, it is what it is.

You were the catalyst for the growth, but you were not responsible for it. You have played many games and they all experienced a bump in players, but based on the numbers for games like New World, Valheim, etc., the game has to be able to stand on it's own to have true growth. You brought people to the table, but the food was good to begin with, so folks came back. Thanks for giving the game a shot.

This abrupt mass exodus was exactly what the corporate types needed to start paying attention to their product after stagnating and slowly rotting away like 1980's USSR over the past decade. Now if only Bliz could clone YoshiP to nuke WoW from orbit and resurrect it from the ashes...
