The part about film being completely impossible to experience how the creator wanted really spoke to me as I had spent over an hour trying to figure out how to get this video to play on an Index only to discover that RU-vid removed their VR app from steam

@@Canadian_Sapphire the quest version is pretty much just a modified version of the standard youtube mobile app (since the quest uses android as it's base operating system) so there isn't much effort they have to put into doing that than to make an entirely new app from the ground up in a completely different environment for a select few people (since I would think that most PCVR users you use a browser app instead since most are 360 capable).

It's worth remembering that before VCRs were invented, the only way to watch an old movie was to wait for it to be re-released in theaters (Disney used to make a lot of money by just putting their old shit back in theatres every few years) or wait for it to randomly play on some tv channel. Pan-and-scan may be horrible, but it was better than having no steady access to classic films. Glad we've mostly moved past the need for it, though.

We should make Disney pay for all of those lazy rereleases back in the days (and today even) by pirating all of Disney+.
@Chex_Mex
@Chex_Mex 2 года назад
However, back in the day, movies were cheap and for the masses until tv's came along. There's a reason there used to be weekly showings of things costing a nickel, or why Nickelodeon has their name. There's a whole era of time where films had the power to make an impression on the entire populace (talking about the US here at least). Nowadays, movies are much more of a luxury in terms of medium and don't have such an impact.

@flamingscar5263
@flamingscar5263 2 года назад
The blurriness isn't normal the fault of the VR headset, it's normally because movies are rendered in standard resolutions and not resolutions that VR headsets run at If a movies was made for VR (probably not gonna happen for awhile) then it wouldn't be blurry in the slightest Another problem is the streaming world we live in When watching a 2d video it's often hard to notice the compression, but when watching a 3d video it becomes extremely obvious how hard the video is compressed down to actually be able to stream it

This has to be your best video to date. Using RU-vid's VR to capture the different aspect ratios is a genius idea and it works perfectly to get your point across. I want to add that a home projector is a versatile way to watch things in different aspect ratios as the picture can be any size and shape you want within it's bounds. How many people have an environment for a proper projection? Not many. But you can still make it work with a neutral coloured wall in your house and some wall real estate. Great work

Holy shit, I am so glad that I grabbed by Quest 2 to watch this (Virtual Desktop, 180 video mode, use headphones). Never have the ideas presented in a video felt so TANGIBLE. I haven't been to a real IMAX theater with the tall ass screen, and seeing it in VR truly helped me understand the scale. The Dark Knight section wowed me, and all the other examples, you feel so engulfed by the frame. The jokes also landed way better! I was actually jumping out of my seat and recoiling each time Noodle approached me or the camera moved closer to him. The whispering and rubbing at your right ear too! I was laughing so hard I had to keep skipping back until I found the strength to stay composed. The spatial sound in general was so great to experience! Noodle took advantage of the format in many clever ways, he is truly on the cutting edge of entertainment. I watched it again just on my desktop (gotta get you that watch time since Virtual Desktop downloading the video bypasses that) and it was fine, but a comparably inferior experience. Things are smaller and less clear when smushed into a viewable FOV the size of a screen. VR really brings you in and close.

With today’s bigger TVs, watching older animated movies in the full picture makes way more sense. With live action stuff, the cinematography and theatrical ratio is more important but with animated films you get more of that sweet hand-drawn art. Over the last 3 months I notice my mind goes back to this video, and it honestly made me appreciate a new level of attention people have when creating their films and art. How do people want their movie to be watched? When the movie is released is it on demand, in theatres, or on straight to dvd? During the pandemic companies moved to streaming platforms, this caused an increase in the health and safety of their customers, and a decrease in distribution costs. Now that the restrictions of the pandemic are lifting or loosening, we are seeing companies choosing to continue their streaming platforms. Yet, it's one experience to watch a movie at home, but to go out into the theatres to watch a movie in person is a unique experience. It's physical, you are actively going out to watch something you will hopefully enjoy. I just watched a trailer for the 2nd marvel spider-verse movie and at the end it said, "Exclusively in movie theaters", and it makes me think about what you said at 15:13: sometimes movies are made for an audience, to watch in person, as a group, in theatres. There's also the incentive of actively supporting the physical and local businesses, even if it's apart of a larger corporation. I love that there are little things a customer can look for to see how the business cares for their employees and customers, and I think this is one way. A similar example in the opposite direction is the 3rd Bill and Ted movie during 2020. I remember hearing that they tried to get the movie on every streaming platform they could, so that anyone could watch it and not having to leave home, that which connected to the meaning of the story, "music connects people". Music, film, art, all connects people as an experience, shared or disconnected. I have a new way of appreciating the small details of how a company chooses to put care, though, and effort into how they distribute their products because of this video. Why does the company make the choice they do, is it for cost, or the enjoyment of the customer. This was a long comment, but thank you for reading

Yesssss! I'm so glad you're the one to finally talk about aspect ratios, and the dumb black bars are forever imprinted on movies after they leave theater. It's getting more acceptable now that RU-vid allows any aspect ratio and will automatically crop it based on your device, so movies at least look wider and more "correct" if your monitor is ultrawide or you're watching on a phone (where most of them have a really tall aspect ratio). But my biggest pet peeve are movies that are 21:9 but RENDERED at 16:9. So that there will ALWAYS be black bars, even if you are watching on a ultrawide monitor or phone, since the bars are now a part of the movie itself (but still 16:9). Such an interesting topic, and I'm glad you're the one to finally bring it up.
@PirateGuy
@PirateGuy 2 года назад
"a phone (where most of them have a really tall aspect ratio" you mean the 16:9~ (or in the case of the latest iphone, 19.5:9) display that you can turn sideways?
@iamawatcher9201
@iamawatcher9201 2 года назад
@@PirateGuy Most phones today aren't 16:9, but instead 18:9, 20:9, or some ratio in-between. This is the case with nearly all iPhone, Samsung, Google Pixel etc. phones since they prefer having a taller screen rather than a wide one. If you turn your phone to landscape mode and see black bars on the sides (not the top and bottom) on a normal 16:9 youtube video, then congrats your phone's display is wider than 16:9 and can therefore display a wider image than that. So movies or RU-vid videos that aren't 16:9 will automatically fill up those black bars and use up the entire display, instead of having black bars on the sides, which makes it a more seamless viewing experience.
@PirateGuy
@PirateGuy 2 года назад
@@iamawatcher9201 yeah, I know they're not all exactly 16:9 but some approximate widescreen ratio, hence the ~ on 16:9~ I was somehow under the impression that by "really tall aspect ratio" you were the kind of person to suggest that mobile content should be designed for portrait view aspect ratios lol
@iamawatcher9201
@iamawatcher9201 2 года назад
@@PirateGuy Some phones are 16:9, but ever since they started making bezel-less phones they have more height space to display while still keeping the same width (hence 16:9 becoming 18:9 or 20:9). This has been happening for the last 4 or so years, so it might not be every phone owner yet but any new ones are probably wider than 16:9. Also I'd rather not have any more vertical videos than we already have haha. Tiktok and RU-vid shorts are the only things that come to mind when it comes to videos made specifically for portrait. And it's really weird to watch imo, especially YT Shorts that are originally from normal 16:9 yt videos but they cropped 80% of the screen to become a vertical yt short for some god forsaken reason.
@noodlefunny

I've ran into this issue too, when watching movies what I found works well is using VLC's built-in cropping feature and telling it what ratio the media you're watching is. For RU-vid, on mobile you can just zoom in usually and on desktop there are extensions that let you do that

Your comment furthers Noodle's point in the video. It's like this video is talking about the intended viewing experience. For this video, that isn't a phone. You're the person watching an IMAX movie on a home television screen. People watching in VR are the people watching at the IMAX theater. Thank you, noodle. For making this 18 minute video, rendering, modeling and doing everything in 3D only for RU-vid VR to be removed from the steam store when i try to get the full experience. Google sucks.

That was my favorite ad read I've ever watched in VR. Honestly great video. I don't have a VR headset so I just held my phone and still enjoyed the video.

I have mixed feelings about this video. The content itself is as wonderful as always! However, I really struggle to watch anything in a VR format without getting sick. I had to keep my phone still the whole time in order to keep myself from getting nauseous, so I'd rather just watch a standard video that won't make me want to throw up while watching it. This is just my silly perspective, but I also thought it was important to bring up in case you are considering/planning on making more VR videos in the future.

Yeah, i think thats the main reason why i dont think movies will be seen in VR. I think its a good alternative to release after its out of theaters, but nothing really else.

I really, really want to get a VR headset to play some cool games, but since I've always felt sick playing first person games at any FOV below 100 (nightmare flashbacks to having to mod bioshock to not feel like I was seeing the world through a scope) I'm so, so hesitant. like I want it to be a format I can appreciate, but given that even standard stuff can make me feel sick so easily, I worry that I will never be able to truly experience the wonder of VR.

I struggled because of how limited I was in looking around. I'd turn to look at something at it just stops, but _I_ am still turning. That is extremely offputting , and very similar to nightmares I've had. Regardless of whether or not I use that turn radius, I'd rather not be limited, in a medium made to remove the limitations implemented in this video.

Man you are genuinely one of the most creative artists and animators on here. you really do teach me a whole lot about art and animation not only as a concept but also an expression. Expression? Eh whatever, you're amazing man

Cropping Dune is so incredibly stupid. Why wouldn't they at least use all of the 16:9 space that nearly all TVs have? It's truly baffling

The Robin Hood case also happened in Japan interestingly enough. I wonder if it was for the same reason. Back in the 80's many Japanese anime studios would originally make an anime movie in 4:3 ratio for TV but when they screened them in theaters they'd chop the top and bottom to fit the theater screen. When it was time to air the movie on TV they'd air it in the original 4:3 aspect ratio. When they released the movies in home video format be it VHS or laser disc (the latter of which had better quality it seems) they'd put the 4:3 version on it. But years later when they remastered the movies for Blu-ray they specifically used the cropped versions they used for movie theaters instead of the 4:3 versions. The image quality is great but they visibly look like they were cropped or look zoomed in. All of the Urusei Yatsura movies did this. When Discotek licensed the movies the Japanese companies sent them the cropped versions. The old 4:3 versions weren't remastered and as a result the colours of that version look faded and the resolution looks poor on modern TVs. I don't understand why they just didn't remaster the 4:3 version when you could just use your TV remote to either stretch the image or zoom in and basically get the same 16:9 aspect ratio. There was one case with Galaxy Express 999 I believe where the movie was screened in both TV and cinema format by mistake and when it came to home video release years later some fans protested and got both versions of the movie. But I could be wrong about that. Correct me if I'm wrong about anything.

The same thing happened for the dragon ball z movies. Currently, the only ones that have 4:3 releases in good quality are movies 7 through 11, for the other ones you're stuck with either potato quality 4:3 or cropped 16:9, and neither of them are ideal obviously lol

@@diegovaldes1408 Yup, I've learned that it was the same deal for the classic Transformers, Dragon Ball, and Sailor Moon movies--Those were all Toei Animation, weren't they? I actually started watching both versions of each Dragon Ball movie side-by-side just to see what was exclusive to the edges on each. And of course now I've seen TV anime redo their old episodes in "HD" 16:9 like Dragon Ball Z, Gundam Seed, Naruto, One Piece...

I absolutely love this video + the VR feature (even on a phone) keeps you always entertained, you should try making another video in VR, I'm pretty sure that less people are gonna leave the video if they are always doing something (looking around, zooming etc...)

1.67:1 to was a fairly common aspect ratio at the time, lots of movies were released that way. A good example is the first 3 James Bond films. They were shot 4:3 because it's 4 perf 35mm, but framed for 1.66:1 for release as it predates the more modern 1.85:1.

I have to commend your innovative use of VR here. Even though I love vr gaming, vr videos typically come across pretty gimmicky in most instances. This sparks a lot of idea for how the medium could change a viewing experience. Personally I think there’s way too many hurdles to make VR movies a real section of the market, at least to the degree of getting a solid viewing experience of blockbuster movies. The up-front cost, a disconnect between individual viewers (especially at home), and extra time spent optimizing for VR, let alone basically no ROI for the efforts makes it seem a bit hopeless. Still, the commentary on aspect ratios is great food for thought. I hate a cropped image, but most of us also don’t have a huge enough tv to where 21:9 doesn’t feel a touch small at home.

Can we just talk about the fact that Noodle's home gets more and more destroyed with each video, and the destruction carries over to later videos?
