My Granddad has been fluent in Greek since he lived there for 3 years in the 1960s and at almost 80, still practices it every day. I haven’t had the chance to see it myself yet, but my Parents have been on holiday to Greece with him and I’ve been told the locals are always surprised when a little old Welsh man begins having a conversation with them in fluent Greek! This video has inspired me to ask him more about it, as well as being hugely relaxing. You’ve definitely earned yourself a subscriber!

I'm an American who took an academic trip to Greece one summer. Learning any Greek in prep for the trip was not really emphasized and all our work and lessons were conducted in English, so there was really no expectation to learn. I really wanted to try though so I made a letter table in one of my notebooks. My most vivid memory though was sitting in the Gyro shop (someone else ordered for me) on one of my days off, looking at the menu and matching the letters to my phone's Greek/English hybrid keyboard in order to figure out how to pronounce the words. The sheer immersion meant that towards the end of the trip I was able to read the names of the towns we passed via the road signs in Greek. Unfortunately I've lost most of my reading ability in the years since but this video makes me want to learn again.

I never studied Greek and yet I figured out how to read it just from knowing Latin and Cyrillic and comparing the spelling and pronunciation of some Greek towns. The fact that there are accents which tell you which syllable to enunciate makes it even easier. I can read any Greek word even if I don't know what it means, and all that happened before the Internet.
@evatsitsani5823
@evatsitsani5823 4 года назад
Greek here...the vowels are 7 and we have a rhythm going on to learn the fact that they are 7 (Im going to write it with english letters so for the foreigners to uderstand) "ta fonienta einai efta kai fonazoun dinata" which means that the vowels are 7 and they "shout" (the tone of your voice is emphasizing on them). So the vowels in greek are Αα , Εε , Ηη , Οο , Ιι , Υυ , Ωω. On the other hand , the greek alphabet has 24 letters and the three letters that you added yes they are from ancient greek language and we don't use them today so don't mind learning them further more. And yeah that's it hope it was educating enough and for more questions respond to my comment.

I want to take a moment to appreciate the beauty of ASMR at a time such as this. We're all stressed beyond belief. The situation we're facing at the moment is dire; make no mistake. As problems add up and the news becomes more and more grim, all of us are being tested to our limit. There is not one nation in the civilized world that is not struggling. As a society, as a people, we are dealing with everyday worries like never before. It is vital that we each take a little time to unwind. To turn off our weary racing minds and return to a state of simplicity. A state where only this moment matters and we can breathe a sigh of relief and rest ourselves for what's to come. If you're like me, and I know many of you are, it is almost impossible to calm our thoughts. To turn off that state of fight or flight in which we seem to be perpetually stuck. This is where ASMR comes in to save the day! When we watch ASMR, our minds go into a meditative state. A state of just being. For a time, we can forget about the monsters outside our bedroom door. Forget about the bills. Forget about relationships. Forget about health problems. And for just a little while, in the safety and comfort of our homes, resting after a hard day, we can forget about Coronavirus. Thank you, ASMRctica. And thanks to all of the ASMRtists who do so much to help us relax. I've been a fan of ASMRctica for over two years now, I subscribed when he just had 9K followers. Now he has 111k. Congratulations ASMRctica. You deserve it! Everyone stay safe. Take care of yourselves. We'll get through this. God bless all of you. ...and that was my speech.

Well, in portuguese the letter A doesn't sound like "Eh"; it's more like "ahhh". Also, in portuguese the letter I is spelled "Yi" not "ai"... It is complicated to explain to english speakers how the portuguese alphabet works because it has it's roots on the greek and latin alphabets, not so much on germanic alphabet. As a brazilian portuguese speaker person, it's very difficult to pronounce some vowels or words in English

That was an amazing video! Thank you mate! If I could say some things: Letters that today’s many believe that they are Latin in reality were Greek F was called δίγαμμα/dígamma Di- comes from dío meaning two Gamma is the letter Γ Two Γ together creating F Also the letter Q was pronounced as a harsh K as the letter Kk was pronounced as soft K The vowels in Greek language are: Αα Εε Ηη Ιι Οο Υυ Ωω Οο and Ωω they both make the sound ‘’o’’ Like the word clock All the letters Ηη, Ιι, Υυ they all make the ‘’i’’ sound Like the word Think Εε is always e in Greek Like the word end In Greek we have a lot diphthongs Two letters together create a new sound, because we don’t have letters for the sounds Bb,Dd,Gg Γ + Γ make the sound of G in the word Good Γ + Κ also make the sound G in the word Good Φεγγάρι/feggàri =moon Αγκάθι/agkàthi = thorn Μ + Π make the B sound, Born N + T make the D sound, Dark Μπαμπάς/babàs = dad Ντουλάπι/Doulàpi = cupboard Vowels combinations: Α + Ι = Ε sound E + I = I sound O + I = I sound O + Υ = U sound
@ASMRctica

Wow this is so interesting, Thanks for the feedback! I had no idea about those two letters creating B, D, G. That’s really nice. One thing I was wondering: How so you write the sound v in Greek? Like in the english word velvet? I can’t find a letter for v in the alphabet. Or maybe it’s the beta?
@Kolious_Thrace
@Kolious_Thrace 3 года назад
@@ASMRctica yes it’s the second letter In Greek is pronounced as Víta Βουνό / Vounó = mountain Although, we also use the ancient term Όρος/Óros which also means mountain The word Αλφαβήτα/Alfavíta comes from the first two letters Αα=àlfa Ββ=víta Alfavíta - alphabeta - alphabet

@@ASMRctica also, something that almost no one knows, the Greek alphabet is a hidden prayer to the light and the soul! If you write the phonetically the letters and not just Αα, Ββ, Γγ... you can read and ancient pray! Have a look: Αλ φα, βη τα Γα! Αμα δε Ελ, τα εψ ιλών. Στη ίγμα, (ίνα) ζη τα, η τα, θη τα Ιώτα κατά παλλάν Δα. (Ινα) μη νυξ η, ο μικρόν (εστί) πυρός δε ίγμα ταφή εψ ιλών, φυ (οι) Ψυχή, ο μέγα (εστί) ======= The: alpha víta gàmma dèlta èpsilon...etc spelling differently are creating words in Ancient Greek: Al fa, ví ta Gá! Ama de Él, ta èps Ilòn. Sti ígma zi ta, i ta, thi ta Iòta katà pallan Da. Mi niks i, o mikròn piròs the ígma tafí eps ilòn, fi Psixí, ó mèga! Translation: Conceivable Sun, you who are the light, come to Earth! And you, visible sun, cast your rays on the baked clay. Let there be a settlement so that the Egoes can live, exist and stand on the pulsating Earth. Let not the night prevail, which is the smallest, and let the sediment of fire be lost in the bubbling mud, and let the Soul develop, which is the greatest, the most important of all! " Baked clay and the bubbling mud maybe are metaphorical the human body! The body is made of baked clay, earth but the Soul is something immortal and divine! How amazing this is!!! I think this is the only alphabet ever created that by saying it, you say a prayer to the Light of the Soul... 🇬🇷

Wow that’s so cool that all the names for the letters can be words as well. And that the alphabet order gives them meaning!! Also interesting to see the letter Stigma and its position! Super interesting, Thanks!
@ASMRctica
@ASMRctica 3 года назад
It looks like when digamma (F) disappeared from the alphabet, it was replaced by Stigma on position 6. I guess positions in the alphabet used to be very important, since the alphabets were used for numerals and counting as well. Before the numbers 0-9 had been introduced as separate characters (From the arabic numbering system)
