I cannot stress this enough, every single man on the planet NEEDS to experience a wet shave. It is the best 100$ you'll ever spend on yourself to just, relax
I’ve been traditional WetShaving for about 6 years now and it’s a hobby for me now, I’m all up in the fourms, Facebook groups etc, there is surprisingly a big community of people who like to do things the old fashioned way. I use fountain pens, shave with vintage Gillette safety razors, straight razors, roll my own cigarettes, use a zippo lighter, shine my own shoes, it’s awesome. You get the best shaves too. I definitely fell down the rabbit hole. I have so many classic and artisan shave soaps, SilverTip badger brushes, safety razors, vintage Dubl Duck and J.A Henckel’s straight razors that I hone myself on Japanese whetstones. Something that used to be looked apon as a chore, we now very much look forward to. It’s our ZEN moment of the day when we can just put on that Frank Sinatra Pandora channel and just make believe your in the 1950’s 🎶 💈😁🤙🏻💈 I used to think you were a snobby douche bag that is a know it all and was a fake rich guy but my perception of you changed. Just because I grew up differently than you doesn’t mean I’m tougher than you. Nor does that mean that your of higher class than me. It’s all about how you treat others and what kinds of morals and values they represent in their day to day interactions with people. I’m a fan 🤵🏻♂️ 👏🏻 The older I get I’m starting to buy less Jordan’s and more Allen Edmonds #PinkyUp 🧐
Same here. Writing with one of my 20 or so fountain pens, driving my nearly 30 years old car, shaving with a proper razor, using pre-shave cream, proper shaving soap, good aftershave. It´s my little escape from the usual allday stuff. Something to remember the gold, old times.
At first I read that as “6 hours now” so I thought it was joke until I got a little further down. I agree through just because something takes longer doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing. Sometimes it’s about how something feels to do
Some people shave everyday like Gentlemen, like our parents and grandparents used to do. Kirby is on vacation here in London and he probably treated himself to a shave at Truefitt & Hill for the morning instead of doing it himself that day.. Kirby has always shaved every day. On this particular day, he had it done professionally and got to relax and have some ASMR while doing so. Facial hair doesn't grow that much in less than 24 hours
Great video - love Truefitt & Hill! Since being gifted an aftershave by my uncle (and visiting the shop for the first time in 2017), they’re one of my go-to brands as a traditional shaver. The creams are fantastic, with wonderful scents, cushion and glide. A must-try, whether their products, services or both!
@kirbyallison side note, but you would make an incredible extra on Law and Order as a discovered body. Your patience and stillness is of professional level. Also, the shave looks great!
Quality of this production is outstanding Kirby, I know i've had my gripes previously but absolutely credit where it's due here... some of the best content i've seen for a long time.
I’m 14 and got a wet shave kit for Xmas and I’ve practiced on myself a couple times and I’ve noticed I’m pretty good at it I get a nice consistency with the soap and I don’t cut myself. If I’m this ok at it than I’ll be fine as an adult
I loved this video Kirby and just wanted to say your tie selection on your website is phenomenal. You are a leading force in fashion and I'm so appreciative you decided to share it with us. You're the best!
I just to live in England, Nottingham and got to wet shave every week! Such a amazing experience it was, miss it so much now but one day i be back 😁 Thank you mr Allison for everything
I have been shaving with a classic straight razor for over 12 years now and will not go back anything else. It's a bit of tinkering with sharpening and so, but the shave is soo much better than any other kind of shaving.
@@kirbyallison I think the safetyrazors can be good, but they are so sharp that they can be very harsh on the skin. A well honed razor is a joy to use. But its not only the shaving part, its the whole ritual with shower, preparation of the skin and the shave. Then its perhaps a touch up of missed spots and then the aftershave balm and the scent you would go for that particular day.
@@NiclasGudmundsson you realise its not the instrument you use that determines the sharpness. ie safety/ straight razor, its the blades itself as the same blade fits in both
@@NiclasGudmundsson what’d u mean. Eg a Wilkinson blade will fit in both straight and safety razor so it will have the same level of sharpness it’s just the technique in which you’re shaving will be different
That's because it's not, the angle is almost 45°, its a shave that would have been feeling rough as it was filmed without the risk of a nick.....understandable but not inspiring......
Love a wet shave, especially from a professional, so relaxing. KIRBY! HOWEVER, why have you not mastered the art of a fine custom made straight for yourself? The experience is exhilarating! Make no mistake, your mornings will sky-rocket with a sense of fear that gets blown away with confidence! Nothing quite like it to take charge of the day!
I have a safety razor and a straight razor. I use the safety thru out the week and then on the weekend when I have extra time to spare I give myself the full straight razor finish with the works. Followed by a couple of other self grooming activities. Definitely relaxing gives you the best shave possible and makes me leave the bathroom feeling clean confident and overall like a million bucks. My favorite part will always be making the shaving cream just love getting it to a good fluff..so satisfying 😌
This post lead me to the Truefitt & Hill in my hometown - Chicago. I had the most amazing grooming experience ever! I received a Royal haircut, as well as a wet shave. The attention to detail is absolutely mind-blowing (rare - this day in age). Upon leaving, I purchased a gift certificate for my best friend, after shave, and booked my next appointment for next month! Great job Kirby, keep up the amazing work!!
Im surprised there was no banter at the beginning. Just sit down, get to work. I could tell you were excited to be there from your smile as you sat down. Good stuff.
@@kirbyallison Absolutely! It's a very relaxing video to watch - I shall watch it a few more times for sure. My only piece of feedback is the length - 20 mins or longer is really ideal for this type of content.
Thought the same thing man. Also that was a poor lather job. You're supposed to press down and swirl so the hairs get smothered in cream and stand up just enough for the blade to get the hairs.
I had been fuzzing with those Gilette razors or those subscription types and their cheap gels for years. Until I tried a safety razor (use a muhle) with real shaving soap. I will never go back, it’s just far superior.
@@NotstarvinMarvin try a different closed comp razor. I use a King C Gillette , works really good for me (I am 18, with not very much facial hair) and try different types of blades , if it is expensive doesn't mean it suits your face or even if it works for others. For example I really like the derby premium blades they give me comfortable shaves without irritations but I know many that have the opposite results. I've tried 20 different brands and models of blades and still I try new ones, I know 5-6 that suit perfectly to my face and skin regardless the costs
From the time I was 15 until I was 67, I shaved with an Otto Fromme straight razor (Red Head No. 23 rounded end), a strop, a cup with Williams soap in it and a 80% "let-out" badger tail brush. After my third major stroke, my doctor (upon seeing me in hospital bed shaving by "Braille", without a mirror) with a semi-paralyzed right arm and hand, forbid me from using the straight edge. I "knick" myself with a "safety" razor worse than a straight razor, and don't get as good, close or as comfortable shave.
Barber extraordinaire! Kirby just love your self indulgence giving up to the pleasures of a quality experience. We could all do with the odd morning treatment like this.
Great video to relax to! Nothing better for your blood pressure than a good hot towel and shave. Can you tell me if you put any moisturizer or other products on your face before turning in for the night?
Shared this with a friend, and he said: "Bad shave. He's using a cheap blade holder with a DE blade snapped on half. These are very scratchy. The poor guy had lots of little micro nicks/blood spots"
Shave videos always make me want to go and get a shave. I had a shave once from a barber but she used a Bic. I really felt cheated plus she nicked me twice. I felt bad because the girl actually cried when she nicked me the second time. I never went back after that. We have a newer barber in town, actually two guys who are veterans. I think they charge about $30 for a shave and they use a straight razor. Might try them out sometime.
Hey Kirby, long time watcher of your channel! I know you did a great watch video a while back, but wondered has the collection changed? I bet you know a good deal of gentlemen who'd like to talk timepieces. Would love to see it! Cheers, Justin
Hi Justin, That is a great question. It has been a while since I filmed a watch collection video. Once we finish up filming the next videos I can look into making a new one. Cheers
It’s unfortunate that the only place I found a wet shave with a straight razor was in Mexico when I went a few years back. Everyone in California is required to use a Shavette with disposable blades for sanitary reasons. I don’t think Shavettes give as close of a shave as a proper straight. That’s why I ended up just buying a Ralf Aust razor and doing it myself.
Hello, I think that if you bring your own razor US barbers will be glad to use it on you. Surely you don't want to share a razor with other clients. Cheers!
Well as this was part of a long day, the actual process was done at a decent pace. We are toying with the idea of going back to film a much longer version.
Interesting, I've HAD a T&H wet shave and prior to the razor hitting my skin, my face was massaged with pre-shave oil first, then a hot towel, then more preshave and THEN the first, of two, shave cream and razor applications. Have they changed the process? It doesn't seem for the better..
Yes it is. It is also listed in the description of the video, but for speed, here is the link: www.kirbyallison.com/sovereign-grade-burgundy-white-spot-printed-silk-tie.html?queryID=bd2a497f6d6ac3b11208a0b82e9cbc52&objectID=1558&indexName=prod_default_products
With a beard as thick and coarse as the barbers, I would think he would understand the need for multiple hot towels. One towel simply does not work with people who have very coarse dark hair and fair, sensitive skin like I have and like what it appears Kirby has. The difference between just one and two towels is night and day. Especially if combined with any kind of pre shave treatment.
This summer during our annual UK visit, I will get a clean shave from here...I can feel the comfort, luxury and tradition...what a charming place...I am regular in Truefitt & Hill Calcutta..
I've had 3 wet shaves in my life, all because I wanted to experience at least 1..so it was on my bucket list and I found 3 places that did them in my area. Now I'm growing my beard again (the first one took off the 5 year beard I had) and I think the closest I'll get to a wet shave is one that's just for touch ups and shaping as I rather like how I look with a beard...also it seems like a thing I'm inclined to do...my dad has a small beard/goatee thing going on, my little brother is similar and me..I'm just letting it go and see how long it will grow down..don't know if I'll get a "Gandalf" length but I'm wanting to see lol. Shaves for me are now more about keeping it lined up and my cheeks free of hair as I have some wild hairs that grow fairly high up my cheek bones. Also getting a wet shave is rather pricey at times due to the lack of places that actually do it around where I live..and one uses a gel instead of shaving cream so out of the 3, I only really count 2 of them.
If i get the chance to visit London this summer truefitt and hill is a must visit place for me! Ive been using their products for more then 6 months and they serve me incredibly well, worth every penny!
A professional wet shave used to be finished with a very light dusting of talc but I suppose the lotion does that job as talc is sometimes frowned upon these days.
As a dedicated DE shaver - I would have walked away from that not entirely satisfied. That shave looked far from BBS. I get the pampering and Truefitt & Hill make excellent shave soaps, creams and aftershave balms but I'd rather pick out one of my fave vintage razors, a blade and a great shave soap and splash and do it myself. For me, it's more rewarding.
The barber mentions in the full video that he only goes WTG so as to not be so harsh on the face. But despite that, Kirby still ends up with little spots of blood - something that’s never happened to me when I’ve given myself a straight shave (I normally use a DE) Like you said, far from BBS. I think the barber even says something along the lines of ‘nobody will be touching your face’ after a shave. But if you ask me, you can’t talk about not giving a BBS shave because it’s bad for the skin, when simultaneously giving the guy micro cuts 🤣 He would have had a better shave, with less irritation with a DE razor.
Can't digest two things here 1. The brush was rubbed in the sink (sinks are to clean/wash things, supposed to be dirty 2. Random blade movements. No logic with respect to the direction of beard hairs. Supposed to shave in same direction for a particular region/patch. How many pounds they world have charged for this shave?
