I am an old lady (this month 74) but I was always very fond of good shoes. I was born after the Second Wold War in south east Europe and during my childhood I was wearing something ugly and uncomfortably that they called "shoes". It was made of bad materials and with bad skills. It was considered quite normal to have bloody blisters on your feet if you wear new shoes. During the winter, they soaked wet and become hard as hardboard when dried. I was very happy when in my teenage years got a pair of beautiful Italian shoes. The first time in my life I was able to wear shoes without blisters, very comfortable and very beautiful. That was the beginning of my love story with shoes and later, as adult, I made a big collection of beautiful Italian shoes. I took very good care of them. I kept them on wooden forms, cleaned and polished them almost every day and gave them to be repaired to the good cobblers. They have been real masters of their trade and every fixing was done fully professional, like this video. Unfortunately, at the beginning of eighties, many of them closed their business due to the lack of clients. The era of cheap plastic shoes began and this cheap and ugly shoes were not worth of any investment in money or labor. What a shame! The time changes, fashion changes, people changes, but I am happy that real artisans are still existing.
@@leticia9281 Thank you for your kind comment. Unfortunately, I am not anymore able to wear my beloved Italian shoes. Ten years ago I had serious problems with my legs and feet and turned to the sneakers and slippers. It was clear that I have to do something with my shoes. It was out of question to put them into the garbage. I decide to give them to someone who can wear them and enjoy wearing them. Close to my flat lived a lady, younger than myself, who wore the same size. She was nice person, hard working women devoted to her children and family. She never had a pleasure to buy something expensive and nice for herself because it was always more important to buy something for children or family. So, I took few big cardboard boxes, put all my beloved shoes in, together with wooden forms, brushes, special clothes for shinning and other stuff, and gave it to her. She was very surprised and grateful. She wore my shoes for years (some are still alive and in use) and kept telling me that my gift was real miracle to her because she never experienced such comfort and beauty. I am glad that my story had a nice ending and that my shoes gave pleasure to the other person.
@@leticialima1088 Dear Leticia, thank you very much again for your kind comment. It made me very happy that my comment was understood and liked. Obviously, English is not my first language so I am glad that my comment was so well received. If you like, you may be my virtual grand daughter. Being old as I am doesn't necessary means to be bitter and unpleasant as many of my age are. I had very unconventional and good life that made me happy old lady still interesting in and loving other people. " Don't lose hope ! I am a widow lady who has three grown children and my husband named our only daughter Chanel because he would give me Chanel# 5 perfume, etc. and being the man that he was he didn't believe that he could help make a girl... LoL Don't lose hope; love is a living thing and may God bless you with this love in your life ! "
These videos also educate us about different ways of living in different countries. I am from India. It is very common in my country to get a shoe repaired from a cobbler. An average person buys average shoes and gets them repaired. From most comments I think this does not happen in most countries. But fast fashion is reaching everywhere. Many young people find it embarrassing to get things repaired. I hope this culture of getting things repaired and reusing them will never get lost.
Same here in México, so many stores closing down cause younger generations are getting used to a lot of cheap items that are easy to throw away rather than a small amount of good items that will work for life as long as you take care of them and repair if needed.
In Canada it is hard to find someone to repair shoes. And not with this precision. We buy special glue and polish and try to fix them ourselves. Sometimes the shoe company will repair them.
I am Canadian living in Italy. Here the neighborhood cobbler is very busy. I buy second hand good shoes and ask him to repair little things or I bring him my old shoe that he gives a new life. The same with the electrician in his tiny shop. He is very busy repairing chandelier and other electric appliances that where well made and still can be repaired. The sewing machine repair man...The last example is the copper artisan in the old town. He repairs and re-tin our copper pots and pans. He was telling me that if the nephew is not taking over he will have to close shop when he will retire.
My grandfather was a cobbler and boot maker and really cared for people's shoes and boots. He came from an era where people didn't throw shoes away but rather mended them. I used to love watching him work and he mended belt and ladies handbags there were no man made materials only leather. I still remember the smell of the leathers and glue it brings back many happy memories
The transformation is incredible. I could cry when I think of some of the beautiful comfortable leather shoes I threw out. I wish I had seen this earlier
A lot of people do. I take shoes to a cobbler all the time. There are plenty of cobblers in my town, so I can’t be the only one. I would never let it get this far like the owner of these shoes did. She must have walked around in them looking like this for a while.
I've never seen anything like this.... coming from a day and age where we just discard and buy new, it gives a deep appreciation for the work and craftsmanship that goes into well-made products, and the beauty of restoration. Thank you for sharing. :)
This is so inspiring and beautiful. I hope is the younger generations don't settle for fast fashion and keep on repairing things. There's such magic to it. I recently brought back to life an old pair of converse who were used for 3 years already. The canvas color was washed out so i painted them and a design on them. The rubber is still okay to wear, so just got them some new years of life. I hope it spreads. Even not so fancy shoes can be used for more than people would think.
God, I'm going to cry now. My late great-grandmother had similar shoes. She was given them by her only husband who was the commander of a submarine and could afford such a luxury. She stood at her husband's funeral in these shoes. In her last photo, she was wearing the same shoes.
I restored and redesigned a pair of kitten heels my aunt threw away, inspired in Chanel's signature colors. This video reminded me a lot of them. Great job, love your work.
Sometimes they have no history. I have ones in that condition and it's all because I stepped on water (the whole shoes) it was raining a lot and I didn't care.
This is one of my favorite videos. Not only for how it clears my mind, totally blank & open. I’m now free to write my music. The creative door is now open. I sometimes come here to erase my stress & adrenaline . Plus I learn how old, worn shoes are skillfully brought back to beautiful condition. Bravo to the artisan!
Buen video y buen trabajo!
Shoe repair is one of the services offered by my family's franchise. Unfortunately we can't give quite as much love and attention to the shoes we repair as this amazing person, but it's really cool finding the similarities! My favourite thing to do is clean and polish leather shoes, the transformation is awesome. We had a customer once who refused to believe the shoes we gave her were her own, they looked so different haha. :D
If you like this, watch The Repair Shop on Netflix. Skilled craftsmen repairing heirlooms and antiques. Fascinating to watch them work and bring an old item back to life.
Omg that was very satisfying! I love clean and especially to see leather my favorite material restored! I never knew such a level of expertise and craftsmanship, thanks so much.
This is like the complete opposite of that "for sale: baby shoes, never worn" story. To see something well loved be treated with love and care is very touching. Thank you for sharing your craft ❤️
@@eileenhall44 I can totally understand why someone would get tingles. My fave asmr is page turning, for some reason, but everyone has their "thing" that gives them chills and scalp tingles. I love these Vetiver videos because they're relaxing to me...I don't care about the "tingles" all the time.
I want to learn these skills. When I take my shoes to the cobbler for repair, the very practical employee always questions if it’s worth the labor costs vs the original cost of the shoes. I tell him, it’s about using the shoes until they’re completely done. It’s so environmentally friendly to repair vs discard. Also, if an animal has died for me to wear leather shoes, I owe it to the animal to get as much life out of those shoes as I can.
100% agree. More eco friendly then to discard. These Chanel shoes where well loved. Preparing them for someone else to love. Maybe a shoe collector will charish the hard work and effort into makeing this shoe
Unfortunately not so many people understand where a shoe comes from.... Let along where it goes when you throw them away. It's going into earth people. Your planet earth. Your backyard so to say....
Especially well-made leather shoes. Sadly most of the shoes now are so cheaply made, they are a shameful waste and can't be repaired. Buy quality if you can find it!
I have shoes that are 30 years old and they look brand new. I grew up in a quality family owned shoe store. There I was taught how to care for my shoes. I have always opted for fewer shoes but ones I love and are good quality. Getting them repaired makes them just like new.
@@SnowWhite-sd9mr you know, old people would want to leave memories of them behind to their loved ones when they die, if my grandma gave me this kind of pretty vintage stuff i'd keep it forever
This is my favorite video on your channel. I keep coming back for it. I’ve been watching it every time I can’t sleep or have a bad headache and can’t sleep because of that. This sooths me in a way I can’t describe. I never understood asmr untill this video years ago. I fall asleep with these sounds and my husband then turns my phone off for me 😂
@@QuyenTran-hh5lg may be....but old things brings us very negative energy. We schould keep our dear persons un our hearts, not in old things, it is the best way.
@@justagirl8757 no not at all! I mean not in my country at least, lol. I recently splurged on heavily discounted second hand designer on Vestiaire Collective, got it re-soled and it is a small fraction of the cost of the shoes. After the work, the total spent still a fraction of what other ppl paid the shoes brand new for. I'm so so happy! Lol.
These days where I live, it's difficult enough finding somewhere to just get new soles and heels put on shoes, let alone anything as complicated as this. It's a really brilliant job you did on these Chanel flats 👍.
I have a cobbler that I frequently take my shoes to for detailing like this in Tijuana that charges me $180 pesos, or about $10 USD for two pairs. I never imagined the amount of time it goes into this craft so next time I go I will be sure to give him a more appropriate tip.
I couldn't stop watching the transformation of the shoe. You are truly an expert to take a worn out expensive pair of loved shoes into that new looking pair. You are 👍 Good!!!
You sir, are an artist! 👏 I have a shoe repair person in my city who is also very skilled - I have 25 year old designer shoes that he has repaired to look like new, and he takes wonderful care of all my shoes for me. Keep posting these videos to inspire people to save and take care of their beautiful shoes instead of throwing them away. The cost of the repairs is a fraction of the cost for a pair of replacement shoes and worth every penny.
really satisfying to watch. if only we'd all restore our shoes and valued items there would be less waste in this world and it makes us appreciate what we buy and own more.
@@TheRubinre i don't think u have to buy Chanel or any other couture fashion brand. Even a favourite shoe because you had a lovely memory wearing it...could probably be restored. He restored a guys canvas converse shoes!
@@9catlover - I know it's not about the name. But I always think it's wise to really invest in a good quality of every fashion item. I've always wanted a lot of stuff in various styles. So I am just learning minimalism!! How much do you think these flats are/were? Does he ever show his face?
What patience, creativity and SKILL! It makes me so sad that shoe cobblers are one of the lowest paid professions in my country. We need to re-prioritize our values; quality not quantity.
I Agree, and You Can't Find Many GOOD ONES. That what we did back in the day, get things Refreshed, we weren't So Wasteful and took so much for Granted.
Adara Relgnel yeah, this video was heavily edited (shortened) and still took 20 mins. What it would cost to employ this guy isn’t worth thinking about. But these shoes are about £400 so maybe ....
Vintage Kitty I married a cobbler. Always loved watching him. He’s gone now but I still have the machinery. There is no market for it except for the metal if you junk it. So sad.
Same here. I was having a terrible headache and menstrual cramps the whole day then I saw this on my recommendations thought of watching it to relax, and it worked. I am about to fall asleep now as my eyes are almost closing. I love ASMR.😍
This was so educational and beautiful to watch. I have some excellent quality shoes and I will definitely get them maintained more frequently. My father was a cobbler and leather craftsman, and I never quite appreciated his talent. I suppose as a teenager, who does. But watching this, I have such a newfound respect and admiration for cobblers and their skill. I will never again complain about what they charge. This is a true talent.
I have a completely new found appreciation and level of respect for not only shoemakers but anyone who has a restorative quality to the way they go about life. What care and detail this individual takes in their craft. Thank you for sharing
This video was actually interesting. Kudos to the artisan for his great work. I have seriously missed our own shoe repair man who lived in our midsized city. No one has reopened the shop. It was really nice to have a shop where I could have shoes repaired or painted a different color. Back then I always wore high heeled shoes and Im sure you know those tiny rubber ends on the heels do not last long. This is a long lost art and I am sure it was a thriving business when purchases were taken care of and restored instead of throwing them away. There are so many things that we should consider reverting back to in today’s modern and throwaway world.
I'm not sure why RU-vid thought I needed to watch this in between flat earth debunking ( scimandan) and The Voice.... But gosh I enjoyed it. You are an artist. Thank you for posting.
This made me cry. I feel like an old shoe. I wish someone would gently erase my scratch’s and bruised edges, I wish someone had taken the time to see the beauty in the old worn leather skin of mine and gently polished me up by handling me with cherishing hands, loving me. Thank you. I’ll forever be a fan.
@@dianazavala5561 that's truth. I felt hopeless and worthless before i experienced love from Jesus. But we have to come to Him first because He won't force Himself on us (because gave us free will)
Yes unfortunately the demand for mass production killed a lot of craftsmen but they are still there. Unfortunately at very big prices so only the rich can afford. But they absolutely should be paid every penny.
Enhorabuena!!
