mauve I’ve been watching your videos for YEARS and you don’t even know the number of books/authors I’ve found bc of your vids!! thank you so much for everything you do!! just finished the master & margarita and loved it
That quote by Martha you put in the description is absolutely beautiful. It was put bluntly but with encouragement. It really helps me look past my own insecurities in my art that I've had since early childhood. I'm going to add this quote to a collage piece as soon as I can
Yay another book video!! Would you consider making another book rec video soon? I’m STRUGGLING to find a good book out here😭 I always love your suggestions:)
Yeah! I've been thinking of doing a favorite books of all time kind of thing if there's interest in it. I'll also do a wrap-up video with recs at the end of the year :)
Yayyy! Love your book hauls, they’re always intriguing! I’m just starting to re-read Lolita, after about 15 years or so. Also just bought Free by Lea Ypi, after seeing an interview with her. Looking forward to getting into both 😊 happy reading!
Yess I loved Hurricane Season and Paradise Rot ☺️ both creepy and disturbing in there own ways paradise rot was like sitting in a steamy greenhouse for too long and Hurricane Season like being in a dark hot room in the middle of summer. Both built very stifling and uncomfortable atmospheres. Back to the bookstore! 🏃♀️
I have been working my way through James Joyce's Ulysses the past few months, mostly between calls at work. It is really challenging but every moment of clarity you find in it makes it worth it like probing the beach with a metal detector
Oh wow, Tim Morton teaches at my university! Knowing how he lectures, I’m really excited to hear what you think about his writing style. Did not realize he had the street cred to interview Björk though!
currently getting through “hot milk” but it’s so good. Love “Zoffie” and the characters she’s meeting. The writing is really strong. Cool structure to it so far. Been reading slowly but will finish it soon. So good. Will to have read more Deborah levy. 🙌
Yes! If you want more Deborah Levy I'd look into her memoirs -- especially The Cost of Living, or Real Estate if you kind of want to float through something with her
I always look forward to your book videos! I’m currently reading Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson! I also recently bought Carnality as well- hopefully it I as good as it sounds! ☺️
Oo lmk your thoughts on Carnality! I haven't started yet but I'm really looking forward to it. Also yes to Winterson -- not all her work does it for me, but I remember liking WOTB, and The Passion was one of my favorite books for a long long time
I ordered a few of your suggestions-Carnality, Mrs. March, and Death By Landscape along with a few others-Sea of Tranquility, by Emily St John Mandel and We Had to Remove this Post, by Hanna Bervoets. And of course I bought a bunch of books a few weeks ago at Powels. I’m in the middle of Bird by Bird, by Anne Lamott and The Dispossessed. Let the Fall reading begin!
OOOOOOO that sounds like such a good spread. I just read Paradais (Hurricane Season is better for fall imo, if that's what we're going for) and now I'm picking up Carnality!
about 200 pages into A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara and wow is a beautiful book. Heartbreaking, charming, and wonderfully written. Would definitely recommend it, just a major trigger warning! Luv the video!!
Here in the North West we used to have a very small chain of book and entertainment stores called Hastings. Your book haul made me miss the thrill of spending hours there just reading the backs of all of the books. The touch and feel of a fresh book leaf is so nostalgic. Anyways, I recommend any book by Graham Hancock, he is a brilliant individual whose life and dedication to the history of our civilization is worth mentioning. Looking forward to your next haul ♥️
I bought and am almost finished with winter in Sokcho due to your recommendation 💞 absolutely loving it and am always looking forward to your recommendations!
Love New Directions. The new book by Kathryn Scanlan they just put out, Kick the Latch, is amazing-essentially a monologue, assembled out of real interviews she conducted with a woman who worked with race horses her whole life. And you can read it in an afternoon!
I saw Carnality at my local bookstore a couple weeks ago and thought of you! It's translated from Swedish, which I read, so I might try the original if I can get my hands on it. Excited to check out Mrs. March! I just finished The Plot, which I'd also describe as pulpy and literary, and helped me break my recent DNF slump.
Oh thank you so much for the correction! Not sure why I thought it was originally written in German. If you end up reading it in Swedish I would LOVE to hear your thoughts! As for The Plot, a friend lent me her copy last fall. It's not the type of book I'd usually pick up but given where I was / how much I was working, it was a fun read and I definitely enjoyed it. The perfect fix for a DNF slump for sure
Hi! I'll check a lot of those books, Carnality seems very cool and also Pew (the theme reminded me of Huracan Season and maybe also Dogville?!). Maybe you would like 'Catedrales' by Claudia Piñeiro??? She is Argentinian and the writing is fairly easy, im sure is a good option for you if you want to read it in Spanish!! (i dont know if its translated yet) Thanks for the vid, Mauve! Amazing as always :)
I have been so into books since i found you ❤️ just bought giovannis room and deborah levys triologpraksis 🙈 cant wait for the next one. Much love and thankfulness
OMG I just started mrs March after watching this (audio through my Libby app) and I’m loving it. Apparently it’s supposed to be a blumhouse movie with Elizabeth moss but I can’t find any release date info. Thanks for the rec!
Currently reading a book called the water cure by Sophie mackintosh honestly great novel! Your videos are always so refreshing to watch, thank you for the inspiring book hauls!!
I'm reading Lanny by Max Porter at the moment, it's incredible. I'm also reading some fiction and non fiction from Aotearoa New Zealand, we have some incredible literature down here!
love your book videos!! death by landscape looks particularly good! i’m currently reading Against the Loveless World by Susan Abulhawa, You Exist Too Much by Zaina Arafat and about to start Minor Detail by Adania Shibli-all Palestinian authors. i’m trying to read more lit from the non western world, especially from countries whose authors are often underrepresented in contemporary discussions about literary fiction. i think you would like all of these btw, especially the second one
Hi Mauve. Thanks for spreading the love for books 🥰 Love knowing what people's reading. I actually just finished En El Bosque, Bajo Los Cerezos En Flor (In The Woods Beneath The Cherry Blossoms In Full Bloom) for a Halloween book marathon, like an hour ago. I think my next read will be Into The Drowning Deep by Mira Grant. It's a deep sea horror novel with LGBTQ representation. I would really like a video with your favorite books ever, please 🙏🏻 I hope you have a good and peaceful week.
En El Bosque, Bajo Los Cerezos En Flor!! Did you lose your lunch when he made puppets out of their heads? I almost threw up twice, no joke. But I love that book. As for favorite books of all time -- it's coming! The thing is I want to have physical copies of each book when I do it, and a lot of them got lost in the mail when my mom sent me that box, so I'm saving up to rebuy them. Then I will!
@@MauveASMR Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear you lost some of your books. I hope you can buy them soon. Well, I've been a horror geek ever since I was a kid and I think I'm not easily shocked. But to tell you the truth, the part with the woman doing something nasty while playing with a head, left me like "WTF? That's disgusting!". Though, that was my favorite story. I read the book thanks to you. I remember seeing it on one of your bookshelf tour videos and added to my TBR right after. So thank you 🙏🏻🥰 I really liked it.
