"The Things They Carried" is a fantastic book. I think you would enjoy it. It is about the war in Viatnam, however it is not a typical war story and doesnt really discuss war as much as it explains the morale issue behind it. The athour will spontaniously break the narative with tangents about ethics, morales, and truths v.s. untruths (These are the parts I find most interesting). It is a great, short read!

amazing collection of books! you're motivating me to pick up some elif batuman. I finished university recently and I haven't been able to pick up books with that setting because it makes me a little homesick for my time there but batuman sounds worth it. self portrait in green and cold enough for snow were two of my favourites of the year too. i also loved near to the wild heart by clarice lispector (my fav lispector so far), nightwood by djuna barnes, and malina by ingeborg bachmann (there's a great article in the new yorker titled "Ingeborg Bachmann’s “Malina” Is the Truest Portrait of Female Consciousness Since Sappho" which says everything you need to know haha) thanks again for a soothing bookish video!

“Cold Enough for Snow” is one of my favorite recommendations from your videos and one of my favorite reads of the year! “Self-Portrait in Green” too. I think my favorite book this year was a classic, “Of Mice and Men”, another lean but powerful story. “Moon Palace” by Paul Auster. Also working my way through “A Tale of Two Cities” by Dickens. Interesting and beautifully written even if it’s not my favorite thing ever (yet)

Love all your book videos, and I especially enjoy end of year favourites. My top reads of the year were Gilead, Beloved, and Bring Up The Bodies.

I recently finished Second Place by Rachel Cusk (on your recommendation I believe) and it was one of my few five star reads this year! Some of my other favorites were Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin, Chess Story by Stefan Zweig, and Kindred by Octavia Butler.

Hola Mauve. Espero que no te moleste que escriba en español. Acabo de terminar este video porque las otras tres veces que quise verlo, terminé quedándome dormida. Estuve bastante cansada últimamente y me ganaba el sueño. No leí nada de Fernanda Melchor (el Chor se pronuncia como el Che acá 👍🏻) pero la tengo muy pendiente. Me anoto tu recomendación. Mi hermana ama War and Peace y me lo recomendó hace años. Aún no lo compré ni lo leí, aunque es uno de esos clásicos que quiero leer sí o sí. Me alegra que lo estés disfrutando. Entre mis favoritos de este año estuvieron Wuthering Heights, que no fue para nada lo que me esperaba. Lo amé. El Color Púrpura es otra gran novela clásica que me encantó, y sufrí muchísimo. Las Malas de Camila Sosa Villada es increíble. Con historias fuertes y reales sobre la vida de mujeres trans. La autora es una mujer trans argentina y escribe de una manera hermosa, con un toque de realismo mágico. Nuestra Parte De Noche (Our Share Of Night) de Mariana Enríquez también me impactó este año, y sus personajes son tan grises que me fascinaron. Te quería dar las gracias por recomendar Portrait Of A Marriage. Lo leí después de ver tu vídeo y me gustó mucho. No recordaba que Virginia Woolf se inspiró en Vita para escribir Orlando. Ahora necesito leer ese libro. Lo único que no me convenció tanto fueron las partes narradas por Nigel. Hubiese preferido que todo estuviese contado por Vita. De igual manera, es buenísimo. También recomiendo Quién Sabe Si Mañana Seguiremos Aquí de Kim Young-ha. Es un libro que te genera conflicto constante porque está narrado desde la perspectiva de un asesino serial con Alzheimer. Por momentos no sabés si está diciendo la verdad o es un invento de su cabeza. Ahora estoy leyendo Breasts and Eggs de Mieko Kawakami. Perdón por lo largo de este comentario y ojalá no tengas problema en que esté en mi idioma. No sabés cómo me duele la espalda y todo el cuerpo por la tensión del partido de ayer jaja Y mi voz está ronca de tanto gritar. Se me caían las lágrimas de la emoción por haber visto campeón a Messi y a Argentina 😭🇦🇷💙🤍💙 Toda mi familia estaba igual. No podía dejar de mencionar el partido, perdón 😅 Te mando un abrazo grande y muchas gracias por seguir hablando de libros 😍

A year end wrap up is the video I didn't know I needed. Are you like me. I use any opportunity to finish my current book. Like in line at checkout of a store or if I'm early to meet someone just any extra time I have. It's the only way I finish any book.

If you're able to tolerate older films, Bondarchuk's adaptation of War & Peace is amazing.

Loved all aspects of this video but especially the hands, and from what I see of you, you could sohhh model. Love the dark hair and voice, so intelligent, concise and relaxing..scribed

omg after one of your previous videos I got so close to picking up The Idiot & Either/Or, but a kneejerk reaction against coming-of-age stories kept me away. correcting that for real this time. and this is also definitely the closest I've come to wanting to pick up War & Peace in my life. my two favorite novels this year were The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende and Pedro Páramo by Juan Rulfo. the former had been on my list for a while and totally blew my mind; I knew nearly nothing going into it except that it was "about a family, over time". the specificity of the characterization in that book is unparalleled. and both the emotional and thematic range is really impressive. Pedro Páramo I had never even heard of until a friend suggested we read it for a book club (sort of, it's a long story) I'm in. it's a spanish-language reading group, but my spanish still is extremely not perfect, so I blasted through it in english to prepare. oh my god I don't think I've ever read a book quite like it before. one of those books that I put down and was like "omg I didn't realize that books could be like this!!!" it's no wonder that so many authors mention it as an inspiration. and I also gotta shout out The Dawn of Everything by David Graeber and David Wengrow. the dry explanation is that it is an anthropological book re-examinging the historical record, challenging contemporary notions of the "savage" and "simple" societies that humans lived with for the thousands of years before "civilization". the fun explanation is that I finished it early in the year and I think about it every day and it completely blew up the way that I think about the word.
