Quote for today: “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help someone else.”
found this vid 7 months too late but by far the best film of last year for me was The Metamorphosis of Birds, a Portuguese docudrama dealing with family, secrets, and truth. The Woman Who Ran is also pretty great for standard Hong Sang-soo fare
I'm late to the comments here but thanks for the recommendations. I would recommend "Waking Life". It's from 2001 I believe. Philosophical type deal. Basically things to repeat at parties to sound smart.
Our lists are really similar! I remember commenting on one of your vids about Blow the Man Down in early quarantine, so it was fun to hear your take. I sooo miss things like going to the movie theatre for a Saturday matinee and getting fries and shakes after! My other top picks this year include The Assistant (so understated and pitch perfect) and Vast of Night (50s, community radio, sci-fi, lots of fun ingredients and good storytelling). I think you'd also find Shirley interesting (a dramatized biopic about when Shirley Jackson was writing her novel Hangsaman). Looking forward to Mank, Black Bear, Druk (Another Round), The Nest, and His House.
Hi hi! I wanted to but honestly it was so much trash TV I wouldn’t know where to start! Recently I really really enjoyed How To with John Wilson - get to the end of the first episode before you make your call :)
@@MauveASMR Ahhh I see, that's valid. I will give it a chance!! I tried watching an episode of The Queens Gambit and ended up binge watching it in one night lol.
i've never watched any of the movies you mentioned, but they seem so interesting so i'm gonna give them a watch :) also i think you'd enjoy the movie Big Eyes
Ah the wonderful, stressful memories of Uncut Gems & Good Time 🤩 I like the sound of the two docs and the weird western. My best friend's at the opposite end of the country, so we've been doing online movie nights, sometimes in VR cinema. Currently on classic Japanese films of the 50s and 60s, Kurosawa and the like. It's the first time I've seen any of them on the big screen (even if it's not real 😄)
@@MauveASMR WAAAAAA that's my all-time favourite channel! I mean... 😰 2nd favourite His episode on Satoshi Kon is fantastic. Just watched this Kurosawa one again, it'd been so long I'd forgotten it. So thanks! 😁
Can I supply a few recommendations? Never Rarely Sometimes Always, Nomadland, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, Martin Eden, Dick Johnson is Dead, and American Utopia. I enjoy these review videos quite a bit. Your evaluations are always articulate and well thought out.
Yes! I also enjoyed Never Rarely Sometimes Always and I'm Thinking of Ending Things (although the latter felt a little self-indulgent at times -- but overall glad I watched)
I'm really happy that you enjoyed Honeyland. I come from North Macedonia myself and i'm really proud of that movie, and i think it's actually very good ❤️❤️❤️
I always love a good movie discussion. Some of your picks I'm familiar with (like the anxiety-inducing Safdie bros double bill - yikes!) and others I'm definitely going to have to check out. Due to covid restrictions I sadly went to only two movies in the theatre this year. By coincidence they were both by Bong Joon-ho (Parasite and a re-release of Memories of Murder - both excellent). On the streaming front I watched mostly documentaries including a little movie called My Octopus Teacher which has some amazing underwater cinematography. I am also very much looking forward to seeing Mank as a big fan of both Orson Welles and David Fincher. Going to watch Honeyland this week for sure. Sounds fascinating. Illuminating as always Mauve.
OOO Memories of a Murder in theaters? I am JEALOUS. I liked the footage in My Octopus Teacher but the personal story didn't quite close for me. Let me know what you think of Honeyland! It won't disappoint
@@MauveASMR I know right? It was a very fortunate opportunity at one of our local indie cinemas. Glad I got the chance to go. You were right about Honeyland it certainly did not disappoint. It was such a rarity to enjoy a documentary with no exposition or narration. It just showed you this woman's life and her environment without feeling intrusive and I thought it was fascinating. To me it was a profound statement on the wisdom of maintaining balance with nature in a sustainable way (her approach) rather than an approach of exploitation and plunder (the man and his family). But of course you sympathize with the family as well due to the pressures of their crushing poverty. I feel like I'll be thinking about that one for a long while. Thanks again for the recommendation Mauve. :)
King of staten island was good, I loved Knives Out, (I bought a go board after I watched it 😂), I just finished Murder on Middle Beach (tv show) The righteous gemstones is good for a laugh The Lie gave me anxiety And mostly I've been rewatching my favorite Christmas movies.
I've been finding movies from the 90s-00s that are hilariously illogical. For whatever reason there's aot of movies from that era that make absolutely no sense.
@@MauveASMR most recently Wild Things with Matt Dillon, Nev Cambell, and Denise Richards. It's on Amazon. It's wouldn't describe it as good but it has a certain type of.. putina that makes it enjoyable to watch lol
I cant believe troll 2 was mentioned 😂 that has to be thee worst movie ever made . It’s fame is based on how awful it is. ... i hope you were talking about that movie and not world tour. ☺️
Thank you thank you YES. I only watched it because I found it on a handful of "good movies to watch" lists -- L! O! L! I did finish it because I am a masochist.
