How did these phones get so dirty?

Any advice for fixing the AirPods Pro clicking/rattle on gen1 that doesn’t happen when ANC/transparency are turned off? Apple replaced the buds a year ago under the replacement program for units manufactured before oct ‘20, but the issue is back and not covered. I tried the blue tac, it didn’t work. I also tried my best to keep them clean after getting the replacements, maybe something near the mic/inside the casing detached? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
