Here I discuss aspects of harmonic function in the main title and the opening cue of A New Hope.
Observations : Flutes are almost always stacked; interlocking is common with Ob1,Cl1,Ob2,Cl 2 and enclosure of clarinets by oboes on the outer parts. Various unison doublings often also occur in the chord.
This is just a chronological look at the aspects of harmony from the main title into the end of the opening cue ending with the Death Star leitmotif.
As ever a huge thank you to patrons!

Many years ago, I was at a social event where I overheard a woodwind player (I think she was a clarinetist) who had performed the main SW theme make a passing comment about the woodwind parts in it doing "interesting things". I wanted to know more about this but didn't get the chance to ask. It's niggled me for decades what she could have been referring to. And now perhaps you have solved the mystery! Thank you, Mr DS - an absolute Jedi you are!

Glad it’s useful! Next stage would be their role in each example in relation to the rest of the orchestra

Excellent stuff-why do you suppose opting for enclosure and interlock particularly amongst oboes and clarinets is being used in some of these examples? Or if it’s just the Rimsky-Korsakoff influence, why would he choose these over simple juxtaposition; is it a slightly more homogenous blend?

It’s a combination of decisions which include registration (clarinets might simply go too high for their taste so having an oboe blend with them above stave makes it less piercing perhaps) and also blends in addition. It’s an aesthetic choice which seems to be pretty consistent when looking at the tessituras of each instrument. I’m always surprised how high oboes are scored for example as I would have probably replaced with an Eb Clari (which he actually does about 20 years later in TPM)

I love your efforts, but get lightly confused. When you say "A New Hope". Do you really mean "STAR WARS?". It was called that when it came out.. I am unsure what this "Hope" thing is... Have a great weekend ...x
