One of the most iconic of all cues in A New Hope and of Star Wars in general. This was the first recorded track I believe.
So much to discuss here: Use of Hungarian Minor at the beginning of the cue in the ostinato. Bbm#4 and a M7 in the bass juxtaposed with C minor imperials theme. Lots of tertial relationships (material based on 3rds), octatonicism, classic swashbuckling writing in the vein of Korngold, Newman etc, some seriously difficult to play string writing, themes galore incl Luke and Leia.
BCH = Block Chordal Harmony
Set 3-3 = C, Eb, E
Hungarian Minor = Bb C Db E F Gb A
Octatonic Scale T0 = C Db Eb E F# G A Bb
CONTENTS
00:00 Cue begins
03:00 Discussion Begins
05:25 Bbm#4 with a M7 and C minor opening
08:23 modular two bars C/Bb dyad hints at previous material
09:43 dim 5/aug 4th and the role of thirds
12:28 The Divergent Progression -wrong note bass/multiple octatonic lines with BCH
18:15 Bbm#4 and more 3rds - Ab+M7 | Db/G | E7Mm/B | Bbm#4M7
21:40 Main theme/Luke's theme - what's going on.
26:05 Main/Luke's Theme second part. Lots of add9s - made an error on the Bb chord apologies.
29:01 My error! Whoops!
30:04 Violins go berserk.
32:36 note counter melody and the bizarre harmony Eb#9! erm....comedy?
34:15 Bill Bailey cockney intros reference
35:06 Forensically examining the F Major theme into the key change into Leia's Eb
41:50 inner part chromaticism to a Bb13 dominant chord
44:15 end credits reference and more chromatic descent - now in bass
44:52 ostinato Cm#4/B then to end
A really extraordinary cue full of interest and a lesson in old school Golden Age Hollywood scoring.
If you haven't already done so - do check out Xanthe's Star Wars Music Minute episode on this cue with Dan Golding.

The music for STAR WARS is incredible. Well deserving of the Oscar for 1977. The soundtrack for Empire is also inspired. Thanks for posting and putting a big smile on n my face while listening to this during my break.

Dont forget the extended music for the Falcon leaving the docking bay after Bens death. It is repeated twice.

@@MarkHarvey-uh8oc yep. But thought I’d play the soundtrack as I can’t take the music off the film version and it’s just a repeat of already analysed stuff. The Phantom Menace was far more problematic !!

@@DominicSewellMusic Thank you very much for replying. I always thought STAR WARS had an Imperial theme during the film, but always considered the rebel fanfare. Imperial Attack at the beginning. Inner City, and Tie Fighter Attack. Kindest regards.

Hi Dominic, I'm a percussionist and I'm preparing to perform Star Wars in concert episode V for next month. I'm really having trouble finding a complete recording of the concert, since you cover these pieces on your site you would have a complete recording of Star Wars in concert episode v. or you know how to get it. thank you very much.

Hey ! Thanks so much. To my knowledge I don’t think any such recording exists as the concert live to picture is an arrangement of the original film - don’t think that affects the percussion parts (it affects timp though and some brass is missing as well as Harp 2, Piano 2 and certain wind and brass combos used in the ice battle) although I noticed that the live to picture version misses out most of the perc in the end credits (although it might be written in the part). I don’t have any access to any live recording - probably best to contact your conductor as they might have some special arrangement with the score provider? Otherwise it’s not really different to the complete score release which is on here on RU-vid. Sorry not to be much more help buddy. I referred often to the actual film on Disney+ as well as the separate releases

From viewing your channel, I was interested to see that John Williams quite often uses block harmonies from the double-reeded instruments alone. I did this myself recently, and was criticised for it by my peers. But now I feel vindicated! I note Williams usually does this with bassoons and a cor anglais; but occasionally uses oboes with a cor. In my case I used three oboes and a cor to make tetrachord progressions.

He does indeed… quite a lot and v common in the rep tbh. No idea why you were criticised…See Ep IV 2m2/2m3 Little People for block chordal homophonic planing of 3 bassoons and cor at the beginning b 1 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oVkI0Vsx0D0.html again at bar 33. Another instance in 2m4 R2 from bar 2, again in 3m4/4m1 The Land of the Sand People 31...Also the famous moment in Bartok CfO 2nd mvt but rare in classical orchestration which is not really a model for most classic Hollywood film work.

Thanks very much for the info! I think my critics are probably unfamiliar with Williams' orchestrations (as I was before I found your channel). I'm trying to write cinematic style music: so I've taken a particular interest in this area.

@@AlexWeidmannComposer Cool! My old teacher Joe Horovitz (sadly passed away a couple of years ago) told me an interesting Boulanger technique which was to copy directly the orchestration of other composers works you like but to change all the notes and rhythms but retain the essence of what was there before! Send me an email and I can probably fix you up with a bunch of film scores. I'll come up in a google search of dominic sewell composer...
