She was magnificent. I’m very glad that some people asked her questions not related to her looks, and complimented her on her skill and talent as an actress.
I've never seen Michael Aspel look so starstruck. I saw Elizabeth in Selfridge's promoting her perfume Diamonds. She was gorgeous of course but also warm and down to Earth. A real star.
I am in awe of Elizabeth Taylor in this particular interview. She is ravinshly BEAUTYFULL AND EXTREEMLY CANDID. I had the great honor of meeting Dame Elizabeth before she even was bestowed such honor by Queen Elizabeth. It was exactly October 17, 1987 and about 19. I was totally frozen at her ENORMOUS BEAUTY!! She is petite woman in stature but her incomparable beauty is breathtaking. I am sure she wanted to slap at asking for a second picture of her and me however, she was such a great trooper and so down to earth and magnificently relaxed. It was an autom day in San Francisco at the first MACYS PASSION PROMOTION. She was wearing a dress much like the smart dress she’s wearing in this awesome interview that captures the most relaxed demeanor in which Miss Taylor has been presented. That day the massive lights from the photographers didn’t dim her breath takeing BEAUTY. I gently placed my hand around that impossibly tiny waste as he table hoped at each of her invited guests for tea. I guess I still have not recovered after 34 years of haveing had the extreem honor of meeting this extraordinary lady. I relish the idea that I was able to meet her and to be one of the first to give her a check for the AIDS cause because thanks to her the world is much safer and GREATFULL to her substancial efforts at placeing this dreadful illness on the worlds conscience. I treasure this moment for the rest of my adult life. Elizabeth Taylor, her foundation and beautyfull children are doing a spectacular job at keeping her legacy very much alive. I adore you DAME ELIZABETH TAYLOR!!❤️🙇🏻♂️🤧🇺🇸🥂👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
A Legend - which she never liked being called - but no ego. Treat her with Respect, Yes, you better had but she didn't talk down to people, as Burton noted. Miss Elizabeth Taylor.
I would have loved to have known her..seems to be a sweet loving & genuine person..when she speaks & her face lights up..i still see the young girl from national velvet..i think she has always been true to herself therefore no regrets..awesome answers to some of the questions asked her..definitely iconic..love u..great actress & sorely missed😙😙
i can't imagine what it was like to be in the spotlight your entire life.....the cameras in your face, the thousands of people who pass thru your life.....it would make my head spin
She left AMFAR due to issues within. That is when she started her own Foundation which remains successful today and one of her grandsons is the head of this. She raised millions for this cause more than any other human being.
There will never be another Elizabeth taylor a Golden girl what a life she had miss her so much with all she had she was not selfish she fought for aids and shine a light on it to help people she lived many lives the violet eyes have finally closed we will always remember her with love and thank you for all that you were you will never be forgotten much love rip dame Elizabeth taylor so glad you were here i will all ways carry a place in my hreat for you there are no words ❤. 11:02 11:03
Liz Trailer needed to re-invent herself to become relevant. Actually it was actress Morgan Fairchild who was quite famous at the time who stepped up and out for gays, first. Risky in those times
She was the ONLY one who actually went to Washington to ask for the government support for AIDS. Much more than Joan Rivers and her posse want you to believe. Fact is Fact !
Thanks for this. I remember the massive hype about this interview. I think over 20 million people watched it. I'm not really a fan myself, but I love how utterly 80's this moment in television is.
He`s appalling. I love it when these British queens say `Darling I love you` and out comes the knife. After saying he had loved her all his life he segues right into the most demoralizing aspects of her life. Even the biopics omitted them.
@@sandrashevey8252 Absolutely .... couldn't agree with you more, 👏 my only realization of the whole sham, was ... Taylor's ( people) at that time were very much in control of such like ... I doubt she was not briefed on what was to come ahead of time ...especially, since that hideous photo of her getting out of a car at Studio 54 .. had been used before on the Phil Donahue and was in her book " Elizabeth Takes Off " which remember she was promoting ...she has walked out on far more important people including a head of state!
@@chuckcummins9149 She `might` have had her own agenda but basically she was a pawn for studio porn, Aids, etc. Eddie Fisher`s autobiography (and this was censored by his daughter Carrie who bought off the candid comments about Debbie Reynolds) says a great deal about Taylor. A studio product, she was raised on porn and to cater for porn as this is how the studios financed their films. The meat market marriage bazaar did not die in the Middle East. It was alive and well at MGM in the `Golden Days`. Aspel humiliated her. She was complicit. Somehow it fit within her modus operandi. This is why I complain about Taylor as antifeminist and a sexist pawn/tool in `Down With Myth America` (by Sandra Shevey) NYTimes 24 May 1970
Found this is my recommendation ... luckily, never saw it before .... maturity, and common sense prevents me from saying what I think of the interviewer... even if it does get better towards the end !
Great interview with the LOVELY ELIZABETH TAYLOR!!! Also, take a look at the first commercial in the break! I believe that the young, thin, brunette guy is Nigel Havers!! He played Elizabeth's second husband, Michael Wilding, in a biopic of Elizabeth called "Liz: The Elizabeth Taylor Story"
Elizabeth Taylor was not only stunning, an accomplished actor but a brilliant businesswoman. Her perfume company broke records and cited in business textbooks as an example of having a genius business formula. She had the goods on many levels.
She promoted her nauseating perfume on fragrance strip samples in all the magazines and Sunday newspapers. I could smell them coming up the block. Not to say she wasn't beautiful and good-natured. She was. She may even have been unaware of the pollution she caused. I am highly skeptical Elizabeth herself was a brilliant businessmammal. Same with Frank Sinatra. I believe each had the good sense and good fortune to employ savvy, honest management.
Interviewers are so intrusive, quite awful showing those old photos and asking her why she had been so out of shape etc. she handled in professionally and beautifully but she needed to be treated with a lot more respect. What a wonderful woman
@6:00 the only thing I take issue with is when she said we were there to cure ourselves. There is no cure. You can turn your life around and become sober, but sobriety is work. And you have to take it one day at a time. But you are never cured. You can always relapse and you can never drink again part of being sober is admitting that you’re not in control when you drink and you’re always going to have the temptations.
God starting interview just talking about her weight fir that long all the things he could ask her and he chooses her weight she handled it so gracious
See, unlike everyone else I don’t really consider him (interviewer) that rude. I just think he is tremendously English and stiff………. That doesn’t translate very well to most other people…… that being said, the one thing I can say I found so completely rude and condescending was when he asked for a story about the Duke and Duchess of Windsor: and obviously he became nasty towards her, and dismissed the story completely after Elizabeth said she wanted the Duchess to smile….. He then proceeded to say something that might as well be “and you have so much money that you can do whatever the hell you want so fuck you”. You could see she was pissed. You do no mess with Elizabeth Taylor and those she loves. That was one great human being. RIP Elizabeth Taylor & Her (well deserved) Royal Highness The Duchess of Windsor. ❤️❤️❤️🌹🌹❤️🙏🏼 I cannot stand gaslighting, and I cannot stand the mistreatment of the Duchess of Windsor. I think it’s about time those people just let it go and start giving some respect where it’s due. That was a whole other can of worms, and the truth was much more tough to swallow at a detriment to that lady that we can ever imagine.
“There was a time when you Weren’t slim-like? How much did you weigh? Do you know how you got that way? We’re you always obsessed with foods?” If I was her I’d of punched his damn face in!!! 🤛
She was promoting her book about weight loss. I suspect that these questions would have been agreed upon beforehand. Michael Aspel was a genuine gentleman and would not have asked such personal questions unprompted!
R. Burton had his autistic daughter in a institution for years [probably still] and Liz wanted him to take her out and come live with them, but he refused always, even her mother din't take the girl out. My son, 39 is autistic and the sunshine of my life, Liz said she could hire the best nurses the best care for the girl but she wanted the child [only 6] around them where ever they went.
I've been waiting for decades for this to come on RU-vid---but can some whizz-tech person put it in its correct ratio PLEASE--to get rid of the stretched picture
@@iarlaanderson3201 It was Aspel`s approach and referring to Elizabeth as `my partner for the evening`. Well, even if he had her, which he probably did, for as I say in `Down With Myth America` (1970) Elizabeth Taylor is a product of Hollywood sexist thinking, he was damn rude to let us all know!!
Straight into the weight questions - 'the good old days' eh? But at least it moved into talk of addiction; just a shame it has to be so ham fisted at her expense. Adore Ms Taylor
@@karinaaguiar7154 Nothing to do with it. She was primed as a child for the brothel. Funny as she came from a family which was reasonably well off. Her father was a respected art collector and dealer. Her mother had been an actress and was on the inside with Hedda Hopper, Greta Garbo and others. They exploited their daughter mercilessly and what they did not do the studio (MGM) did. Late in life, she accused her `mother` of putting her `on the road to ruin`. She was right! Still goes on today.
That's what Rho would say - that they're cold sores. But then, she thinks she's half British so if she can't look at a DNA test without squinting, what hope has she got with a RU-vid clip?
He was very disrespectful with the question. There was probably misogyny involved. If it Elizabeth had been interviewed now, she would've left the studio and the interviewer would've been forced to resign his job
You do realise that the questions he asked her are asked to her before the interview and she's happy to talk about the subject or do ou think she went in blind not knowing what he was going to ask her ???? 🤦♂🤦♂
To be fair, I don't think this type of extremely blunt and cheeky interviewing was uncommon back then. People seemed to be able to ask about weight and personal struggles with much more acceptance and go in depth, but I do hand it to Elizabeth for handling things so well.
@@emmad.176 ... Totally agree. People here are talking from how things are today. In 1988 and before, people didn't get offended at things they do nowadays. Plus, the questions Micheal asks are probably pre agreed with Elizabeth anyway.
