Well fyi here in the Netherlands it's called ASS Autisme Spectrum Syndrome. Personally I find this less triggering because it's not like adhd or odd. So no disorder but like Asperger's, Syndrome. Sensory issues with heat, same here, hate summers. But eye contact at first place? No problem here, I've been told I have a piercing look. This helps me to understand people. Micro expressions but that I learned through decades. Great vid. Greetings from Netherland

Spot on with all! My big brother and I have Asperger’s. He died at age 49, I’m 53f. We sweat so badly, we wore shorts and t shirts in the winter walking the dog or shovelling snow! Our youngest has it and I was able to know straight away. She went to a brilliant school that worked with her, she was 2 with the vocabulary of an adult. We worked hard at home with her, as well. She’s 24, graduated Uni with a full academic scholarship and is very outgoing! I’m NOT! My career picked me because of my “different wiring”. Very structured and routine but I learned to improvise easily when necessary. I despise certain textures and all tags come off immediately. Your hat is triggering me 😂

I absolutely hate it when it gets hot! I'm fine when its warm, but I'm like a human radiator anyway, I produce more sweat than the water from my shower when it's only 15°C!

My husband doesn’t do eye contact, closes his eyes when he thinks of his response of a request. He is warm all the time, he has weird OCD habits, same tv shows and same food, lives by routine. His communication skills are getting better through therapy, he doesn’t understand or know how to socialize. He can go on and on on a topic that is his on obsession (TV show or topic) and knows everything, and will go on and on without realizing the listener is unaware of the topic and isn’t interested. I’m his wingman; and help him navigate the social situations by changing or finding a link in the topic those he’s speaking to can relate to. And at times he is oblivious to the shift in conversation. His IQ is very high, and understands he is on the spectrum and his sensory processing is co-occurring with his communication skills. Together we are learning to communicate and co-exist in a harmonious way by open communication. (He’s not allowed to plug his ears anymore if I keep talking…he has to communicate by a sign or word to let me know he’s tapped out).

I received a late diagnosis only because of my wife’s training from her job. Upon learning this I sought out a professional diagnosis to make things official. I learned to deal with things in my own way and adjusted to these experiences. Some of these things have gotten harder as I’ve aged. Having downtime, lights off, and watching documentaries or learning some type of new knowledge are my routines. My job has absolutely been a nightmare but has helped to raise my personal threshold to deal with things much easier. Even though it’s too late for me to help myself out. Going forward it’s a massive benefit to have this knowledge about myself.

I'm finding things harder as I age too, the things I could tolerate and navigate when I was young are not an option now. I posted about this in an autism subreddit, and the responses were startling - it seems that for many of us, this is true - yet the literature denies it. For women, the general opinion was that the perimenopause really makes it worse, so it's enlightening to know it's not just happening to us. I suspect there is a hormonal aspect to it as our levels drop but lack the expertise to investigate.

It's more the other way around for me about eye contact. It's not that I feel that I'm looking into someone's soul, it's more that they are looking into me and reading all my thoughts.

Whereas for me, I feel that looking at eyes too closely is like leering at people's genitals. That might sound a little strange. I think the reason I feel this way is that I had very bad eyesight as a child (it's still ratshit but I'm no longer close to legally blind, which is pretty much what I was as a small child). The attempts to improve the bad eyesight were traumatic (as in left me with PTSD) to say the least. So for me eyes are almost like genitals in that they can be violated in ways that are not a thousand miles removed from rape.

Me, too. I'm smart and perceptive, but I mostly forget an episode by the next day. Books, too. I have come to realize I like "being there." I love being in the Antarctic in The Thing. I like being in Indiana Jones leathery jacket swinging a bull whip. Being in that seemy and gritty world of The Godfather. Being with Capt Picard on the Enterprise. Harlan County with Raylan Givens, and on and on. In the sand in Dune 1 and 2. So, I want to keep going backthere. Songs, too. I will listen over and over sometimes for days. I love The Struts song, 'Low Key in Love' and I'll be in the car driving wherever and play that song 5 or 6 times singing loud as I can. Over and over.

My friend has a son with autism. She has to drive 1 hour and 26 minutes Monday through Friday to take him to a special school that can help him. She has 2 other kids, cannot work, and the only reason they can even survive is because they live rent free in a family home in the middle of nowhere. I'd say this is one reason autism is seen as negative. She still loves her son more than the world, but she can't do things she used to or wants to.

I forgot to mention that when talking I often say the wrong words and pause a lot. It's hard to think and talk at the same time. Sometimes I'll inadvertently try to say two words that mean the same thing and end mixing both of them up and saying a word that doesn't even exist!
@Petlover97
@Petlover97 День назад
This, I have been noticing this a LOT lately (&it’s been a BIG problem like it makes me want to just explode right on the spot like🤯) I notice that I’ll find two words that are sorta similar, but like within context it is totally not right because those two items are SO CLEARLY not the same ..for example if we are out somewhere and start talking about a car and then I go and say truck it’s like lol because okay sure they are both vehicles and you can drive both of them however again if we are out and talking, referring to a car meanwhile I go and say truck like lmao *facepalm🤦🏼‍♀️* because that is so clearly NOT THE RIGHT WORD TO SAY? I think my brain is like nah those are both drivable with gas so it’s like the same thing, you don’t need any other words, it’s a car, but actually no, no it’s not a car AT ALL WHATSOEVER like🤯🤯😭🤦🏼‍♀️😂

Both me and my daughter have heat sensory issues. We run much hotter than anyone else in our family, and even often throughout winter, she and I both wear tank tops and shorts, especially if I have to be out in the yard working on something. My daughter often confuses hot and cold, as well, especially when she was young. Rather, I say "confuses" but I think that might be part of her brain wiring that tells her that cold is actually hot and vice-versa.
@J.84
@J.84 9 дней назад
Over sensory delay is so challenging, the reason i am feeling social anxious and needing my time to mentally prepare to leave the house. For example, one day, i will meet up with a friend , and going to the training and / or do groceries needs at least 1 or 2 days of recovering my quiet. I get mentally very exhausted if i have to do social tasks for more than one day, which i can feel physically drained and in need of more sleep. I have, on top of that, a tinnitus on both sides it made it even harder to me to socialise in big groups. If to many people talking at once, I'll leave and seek quiet. At the communication side, i don't want even to start because it will take a day or two to digest and requite the proper words. I always make this mistake because i know people expect to receive an immediate answer or thoughts and to 99% it is a 50:50 chance to cause trouble. So i got used to just listening and responding later via WhatsApp. If adhd meets spectrum a: if it colides i have periods of absolute dysfunction. B if it conspires i don't want to miss the good times of inspiration, it can takes months of good progress in what ever is interesting, then im in ghost mode.

Very Late Diagnosis Asperger's Syndrome... the diagnosis - it's both a blessing and a new challenge. Great to know why all my life I've behaved "inappropriately" in so many situations... self-loathing is a demon that's extremely hard to exorcize, when the memories come in a constant cycle to remind you what I prick you've been to so many people... all your freaking life. I've learned a certain level of masking, and behave in most situations, but as you'll know it leaves me drained, as if I'd worked a double shift, against the wind, uphill... on a starvation diet.

I pretty much learned to speak by reading. It sounds weird because there were no audio books when I was a kid. But I would read books so often that I memorized them, and for words I didn't know, my brain would like click the words together (kind of like on that show Word World) when someone said the word I didn't now. And because I learned that, I had idea the meaning of many words until I heard it used in context. Shortly after I started reading, too, I started hoarding my classroom dictionary so I could look up words I didn't know from my books. One teacher just accepted that I hoarded her dictionary because I wanted to learn, so if she ever needed it, she just went to my desk and borrowed it. This was like 1989 or 1990. I still collect books to this day, including always keeping a couple dictionaries and thesauruses on hand. My daughter, on the other hand, didn't speak until she was almost 3, and she learned to speak socially by watching Peppa Pig, and though we live in California and have never left the US, she had a British accent for awhile. To this day, she also still has her own dialect ("should I" instead of "can I" and for a long time she used "prank" instead of "lie"). I had to translate for her in public when she was younger. Her very first form of communication came at almost 3 yrs old when I was desperately trying to get her to tell me if she was hungry or thirsty (she couldn't), so I put on an older sign language video (I'm trying to find the name of it, at the moment, I'll edit this comment when I do) and after watching it a couple times she finally realized that things had names and she was able to ask for stuff.

Although I've never actually been diagnosed, I've had a couple friends and family members point out that I may have some of the "tism's". Most beings diagnosed with such themselves. The first time I thought it possible was when I was talking to a friend teen son, about a common interest. He pointed out to her some of my mannerisms similar to his, and asked if I was too. I dress the same every day blue tee shirt and jeans. Im always hot. Strong perfumes shut me down. Loud noises in a crowd shuts me down. Bright sunlight shuts me down. Issues with social awkwardness, although I've learned to overcome a lot of it out of need. But I've always been the "hes a little strange but cool" guy.

I understand everything, for I go through all of these all at once. With eye contact, I always will look sideways, or at the ceiling, or at the floor. When it comes to watching the same TV shows and movies, I do that alot, especially when it comes to my favorite movies. You can never go wrong watching the same thing over and over again. When it comes to TV shows, I can watch the same episode and seasons over three times. Everytime I hear that a new season just came out, I have to rewatch all the same seasons again before I can watch the new one. I do have social issues too. I was able to fight off some of it at college, but there are times when it still gets in the way.

Aspie here Fantastic list! However I wanna commet that point 3, 4, 5 can be mitigated through training in my experience Is it uncomfortable being social? Socialise more. Spend more time with people Do you struggle with sensory issues? Spend time challenging this sensory issues Do you struggle communicating? Spend time doing research on it and have people tell you gently if you messed up That said This is the kind of training that takes years of gradual and dedicated effort. You can't do it too rapidly, as you get burnout/meltdown/shutdown and you need to go five steps back. So it is really slow and one little step at the time

You are really just like ”reading from the manual”. I went under the radar until 37. And the Asperger diagnosis just explained my childhood. And eye contact!? I have had the opposite problem, if it even is a problem to be able to keep eye contact forever if I wanted. If you have met one person with ASD or Asperger’s, that is it. You have met one person.

Some thoughts on turning down social invitations: for me there is definitely an element of preferring to do my own thing, but mainly it's because it involves a switch of task - or, as I prefer to call it: a switch of mode. Neurotypical people might say they aren't 'in the mood' for something. This is close, but I have different func tional - rather than emotional - states. For example I might need to go shopping, but also need to study. If my brain is in study mode, I have to work through that, and wait for the shopping mode to come, there's no point in forcing it because there's immediate overwhelm and burnout if I try. Thinking in terms of functional modes has really helped me, because I think it greatly reduces cognitive load and I can relax more without the 'shoulds'. Different modes seem to naturally cycle when you obey them without guilt. Just my thoughts on the matter. Again, this is called 'task switching difficulty ' in the literature, but maybe this deeper perspective is relatable to someone.
@erinmac4750
@erinmac4750 5 дней назад
I definitely relate. Since I also have ADHD, if I'm in a productive mode, studying, shopping, cleaning, etc, and something interrupts, things get shut down. I can't usually get the modes to happen at will. Sometimes I can get into a schedule or pattern that facilitates the modes being synced with what I need to do, but if things are out of phase, then it is melt down or burn out time. I try to keep those to myself, which usually means some down time. I'm glad you posted this. The only people I've known with this have been myself and my youngest son.

You called me out on so many things, but the heat thing was totally new to me and i'm glad i'm not the only one! Because i move around a lot and feel exactly how you described, i'm at home basically 24/7 only in panties + tshirt (fixes heat problem and sensory issues) (and walking on my tiptoes! but not the point of my comment😂) But when im not moving im always snuggled in my comfy blanket, also in summer, so heat perse isn't really the issue. I was finally able to open up to my doctor and starting therapy soon. Gonna be the first one actually diagnosed in my (very neurodivergent) family, as many other fellows in the comments too :) So keep up the great work! Helps us soo much

Always struggled with mental illness since the age of about 14 it was very chronic and I do have a few diagnoses but have been wondering for a couple years now from reading about autism. This video was explained so well. Not only to understand others who have it but I definitely experience many of these things. The way you explained the temperature part, vocabulary, and daily routine felt like you were pulling feelings out of my brain and articulating them perfectly. I’m not gonna self diagnose nobody should do that. But it’s certainly got me wondering and thinking. I’m sure there’s some sort of layover between mental illness and neurological disorders of course but I’m no expert and this was a very informative video so that you much even though you’re just doing your thing :)

I relate with the feel of communication with other people being sometimes too fast. I wish I had a pause button to pause the world around me to give me time to digest what other people have said and to come up with my response. Sometimes just 10 seconds would be enough, sometimes 10 minutes if my response needs to be elaborate. That's why I strive communicating via email or writing comments/opinions/replies online. I have all the time I need before hitting the "send" button.

Yea. Number 5. I always can't understand what people are saying. I have difficulty following movie plots because I don't understand what they are saying, unless it has subtitles which help a lot. Then I'll be staring at the subtitles instead of focusing on the motion pictures, which is as good as reading a book. Or worse, because you're not allowed to go at your own pace. That's why I think story apps are brilliant, they allow me to go at my own pace as well as taking my time to enjoy the pictures.

After realizing the majority of people around me are idiots, And lots of research On my odd behaviors and idiosyncrasies. I diagnosed myself and then had it confirmed. It used to be a really hard struggle. That caused me a lot of issues, but once I had a name for it and knew what was going on, I'm comfortable with it now. It doesn't bother me Anymore. I just feel like i'm more evolved than other people around me. I'm pretty intense and aggressive. Everything for me is fast. I get hot like you had talked about and nothing goes fast Enough for me especially conversations. I can listen to the conversation and come up with my reply.All at the same time. Having a conversation with another person on the spectrum is pretty awesome. Because we just tend to feed off of each other, which is pretty cool and other people can't keep up. Bright lights and sound are my kryptonite.

Routine is so great for me. ❤. It comforts me and makes life easier for me because it gives me a security, in that I know what to expect with it, no matter what it is. I don’t wear the same clothes or eat the same food every day, but routine for me takes the form of everything being the same at work every day, for instance. When that is changed up, which it often is, it really pisses me off. It’s a bit of a curse, because I’m always fearing someday that each routine in my life will change up and I won’t have it anymore. Since the nature of life is change. :(

I cant stand noisy places. Supermarkets for instance with all the people telling at top volume, beeping tills, announcements over the PA, screaming babies and all the other noises, its overwhelming. I don't know how other people cope with it. There's a much quieter shop nearby that's never all that busy and has just about all the stuff I usually buy so I usually get my stuff from there. Spicy foods on the other hand, I could live on the stuff, the hotter the better. Speaking of heat, I cant stand high temperatures, anything over 25c and and I feel like I'm in a sauna! I'm much more comfortable at around 21-22c. Mum says my room is so cold, and I'm like "no it isn't, the rest of the house is too HOT". I don't know how she is comfortable in 30c or can sleep even without a fan on when its that hot. I hate sunny days too, they make me fell anxious, the brightness is obnoxious, and it doesn't coordinate my mood or coordinate with doing things indoors. Rainy or just overcast days are so much more soothing and comfortable, especially if there's a thunderstorm or too.

I don't have a formal diagnosis - I do want to try to get that. When I first started to think about whether or not I may be autistic I thought, "Oh, I don't have visual sensory issues." And, for the most part, I can handle bright lights and even big, bright displays. (The noise from some fluorescent lighting is a different question but that's a sound issue and I've got a lot of them.) Then there was a day when I had to get up before sunrise (something I avoid if at all possible) and I followed my usual routine of lighting a candle instead of turning on electric lighting. Considering the issue further I realised that I keep my eyes shut virtually the whole time I'm in the shower. It's not just about keeping water out of my eyes, I stand so that I do that anyway, it's just showering and eyes open don't go together for me. (If I have a bath that's done with eyes open, so this is not some odd manifestation of modesty.) And then there was the time I had an oral test. As soon as I started to answer a question I closed my eyes. This was to block out visual sensory input so that I could "look" at my notes in my mind.

I live in an area where it is impossible to find anyone who can give a diagnosis to adults. The focus is on children. I have been seeking and searching but cannot find anyone who works with adults. So, for now I can only learn from online such as yours. I have always been “different” from my peers all through childhood and adulthood. Having a hearing loss, I do look at the persons face in order to understand what is being said: I look at the mouth. Sometimes the mouth is gross, depending on the person. Then I look away, but cannot understand very well. When I was little, I’d look at the forehead. I remember looking at the wrinkles between the eyes when my mother was upset with me for something. I’d be drawn to how the wrinkled up! Rather than to what she was saying. I was known to be a “picky” eater. Certain foods smelled too strong, looked icky, tasted too strong, or felt icky. Tags, seams and itchy clothing was uncomfortable. Social situations lost me. I later learned to “mask” or “fawn” at time in order to try and “fit in”, but even that was awkward. I’d resort to silly small talk and leave, or want to leave “it is enough!”. I hate and still hate long conversations, useless chit chat, stupid questions I can’t answer and end up with saying awkward words that cause an unpleasant response. Counseling, spiritual direction all ends up in a blank and trying to find ways to talk that are impossible for me to express. I express better in writing as I can take my time processing, but it too often leaves a negative response by those who might read it or read into something I didn’t write, or interpret it to be something different. So, communication is a tough process for me: “you don’t communicate”! They say to me. I do, but not in the way they can understand. “Oh you’re so sensitive”, or “you’re overreacting” are common responses. I like adventures, without conversations, but I also like to be home, by myself, no one to question me why I do this or that that way, roll their eyes, etc.

I don’t know what changed but my body temperature doesn’t get above 97.5 but I have to watch it as it can get below 95.0 so now like this summer it’s 90 degrees out and I’m under a blanket. All of that resonates with me big time. The part about going out socializing is interesting. Personally I will go out but have to have a couple drinks. Groups are difficult. One or two people is fine. In terms of emotional intelligence. Well, basically people have two forms of judgement; thinking and feeling. Thinking is true/false feeling is good/bad. Some are fairly balanced. But everyone using one process more than the other. Therefore, identifying with that process. Ask me how I feel about something. I'll go blank and clueless. Ask me what I think and I'll go into a rant about it.

I usually get bored with stuff, and can not maintain it. Not small things, but what I do in life. Like job, education and that stuff. I also have a serious learning disability. If I read one page, I can not remember the first half of the page, and I would sit and find my self asking what I were reading. Hence, why I can not read books like novell's and stuff. And so I used the thing of switching occupation out, as a means of survival, when I had used all my options. Stuff like too many sick days or failing grades. 1/2 a year to 2 years and then something new. Yes it was super uncomfortable to do something fully unknown, yet it were still less stressfull than to stick around in the old. It was my survival tactic, jumping around from hub's to hub's and just grasping for straws. But that was how my life were, untill I got diagnosed with non-typical Aspergers syndrome in mild degree. It is neighter "classic" aspergers, nor neurotypical, nor high functioning Autism. More like the ND version of Aspergers. Like if aspergers were not ND enough allready. It is like ADD, but not really. It is like Aspergers, but not quite. It is like a neurodiverse-neurotypical. It is, but then not quite, and though it is, it is not really. Like special interrests. Yes I can sit and do them on hours at end, but I can never start on my own. I need to have someone start me on it. But then I go on for hours and hours. Eye contact I have those issues with. But it is more the feeling of goosebumps up the spine, as if you were watching a horror movie.

I have Asperger's. You defined Alexithymia before mentioning emotions and that had me confused. The part of communicating where you described processing information coming at a person on the spectrum fits me exactly but that has nothing to do with emotions. The second part is not me (I think) because I always know the word for how I feel although I may have the last part where people misinterpret my emotions probably by weird non verbal communication or tone of voice perhaps. So I guess: how do you define Alexithymia? As a side note, I like the way you explain things about Asperger's. Your accent is really cool, it's unique to you. :)
