Thank you very much. I'm, in the near future, heading into starting the initial builds of the motor I want to produce. This will allow me to have a setup where my trusted person can take care of the computers remotely and I can keep all of the huge amounts of video and pictures that will be shot and taken while this process goes on. Thanks again for the really useful information.

For those who have routers and motherboards capable of it, WOL (wake-up-on-lan) is very useful to allow you to do similar things to this. It won't let you get into the bios of course, and if the computer hangs you won't be able to reboot it remotely, but I've used remote support applications and WOL for my home network for a while and it is normally very good. No need to keep the computer running all the time, I can just wake it up when I need it.

0:25 Server class but is in the Mini-ITX form factor. I'm very sure that's for advanced users like me who want to build a custom NAS so that they can have full control over the software! NAS specific Mini-ITX cases exist, too.

How do I update java in chrome? When I tried using the java console to remote in, I get a pop up and it said that it's downloading a file instead of showing me what's displaying on the video output.

How do I access IPMI or let alone turn it on? I know my motherboard has IPMI management built in including a BMC, I know that the management port is the realtek port (in my case for the Asrock ep2c602-4l/d16) and I tried entering in the ip address and I can't find it. I even manually set the ipmi ip address to 192.168.8.4 (in my case) and it still won't connect (from my laptop's web browser to the ipmi management port.) How can I fix this?

Do you need ECC ram for this board? Was looking at this as a tiny VM server and general mucking about. The network control is probably the coolest thing I've seen on a system that's so small.

No, but it's highly recommended if you want to run FreeNAS with ZFS on it.

You do not need this unless you are making a server you need to manage remotely. If the server is in your house, its pointless unless you are a lazy ass lol. If the server's physical location is somewhere else, well ipmi/kvm is a requirement.

hey, this is a noob question but im really interested in building a NAS. Now, when you put in the IP address it took you to the IPMI interface, but what if you want to access the freeNAS interface? is it all through the same IP?

+‫ابو لولوة النقي‬‎ No, Wendell mentions numerous times that it's a different network interface, therefore it has a different network IP to FreeNAS, despite it being the "same" computer... FreeNAS's IP is often 192.168.1.1 (or similar), whereas the IPMI was 192.168.1.100. As he said, IPMI is kinda-sorta a computer within a computer.

well i have in sli gigabyte 670 windforce and they work but if you try to push them they just are not as good as asus cu2 or msi custom cards.... saying that i have never used a gigabyte MB

How do you obtain the IP address initially? (Assuming its served by DHCP)

When you first start this machine you need to access the bios thru the VGA/KB/mouse to configure the ip address for the IPMI nic interface. Since this is a server, you typically assign a static ip address. You don't want a dedicated server to keep changing its ip address.

I use adblock, but whitelist sites that I trust and know wont be using annoying ads, like pop up shit and that kind of stuff. So RU-vid, twitch, facebook and a few others that I visit daily are whitelisted. And then I add more too the whitelist as I feel like I go on there enough and that the ads are not annoying.

I want. ;^; Just for the ability to get into the BIOS without having to plug in a monitor and keyboard. Cuz the way I've got things set up currently, I just have Ubuntu Server 13.10 running KVM and then I use virt-manager to manage all the virtual servers I have. So I don't really need to be able to remote into my machines this way as I've already set that up. :P Being able to access the BIOS remotely would be awesome. Plus it'd be nice to get a computer you plan on running headless, plug it all in and then go over to your main computer and set everything up without having ever connected a keyboard or monitor to the thing. :p
