Assange allowed back to Australia after plea deal with US authorities | DW News

Wikileaks reports that its founder Julian Assange has left a British prison and has flown out of the country. This comes after the release of US court documents showing Assange has agreed to plead guilty to violating espionage law.
The deal resolves a long-running legal battle between Assange and the US government. He was wanted for publishing classified US military files and documents on the WikiLeaks platform, which he founded in 2006. He had been fighting extradition to the US in Britain, where he spent the past five years in a high-security prison.

I recall commenting on an Assange video months ago that he should plead to a lesser charge and be released for time served I expect that was the best case scenario it certainly was not "justice" to detain him for years in maximum security convicted of no crime not even allowed access to all his paperwork and files to build a defense he and his family must be relieved though I'm sure he has been severely traumatized and America should be embarrassed about the war crimes because they are war crimes not just because Julian told people about them. The point here is that Assange committed no crime unless he was either in America when he received and published the information (he was not) or was an American citizen (he was not). The USA cannot prosecute people who are neither American nor offending US law in the USA, or it would be able to prosecute anyone outside US territory for any actions perceived by the USA as offending. Just as Germany does not demand non-Germans acting in foreign countries in a manner that does not break the law in whichever foreign land the persons stand to be extradited to Bundes Republik Deutschland to face trial, same goes for UK, the USA should not have extraterritorial powers to force non-Americans to enter the USA to face a political trial and ludicrous punishment. The NYT faced no such threat and they did offend the same laws and were Americans acting inside American territory. If this were Iran, PRC or Russia we would all grimace and demand our respective governments protect us from foreign interference and they would largely grant us our protection as citizens of our countries. Sadly multiple governments and politicians in Australia have failed all Australians in failing to vigorously defend Assange just as multiple Presidents of the USA have failed to protect the reputation of being law abiding leaders of the free world. Let’s see if the Albanese federal government of Australia and President Biden can make this right and not only free Assange and rehabilitate his health and reputation but expunge his record with a full pardon.

This "whistle blower" went on open-ended fishing expeditions to get a media scoop on classified military secrets. When he offered to give technical assistance to a leaker he crossed the line and broke the law, and if you do this you deserve to have the full prosecutorial wrath of the entire US government brought down on you. I'm sorry but when you directly target the US national security establishment with coercive attempts to exfiltrate information you cross the line of being a journalist.
