I get what you mean in this video jayvee. I love this game too. But my number one favorite game is AC: Brotherhood. AC: Black Flag was number 2 until AC: Valhalla came out. Loved this video.
Yeah... I tried to play Black Flag and that was the first jarring thing to me was how insanely white his teeth were. First 3 hours of the game were boring so I just gave it a quit. Maybe I'll try again later EDIT: I didn't stop playing because of the teeth folks, I stopped playing because the start of the game was too boring. Relax.
Playing the game was like watching a movie. After all the time I had spent playing it to get to the end, this was a bittersweet moment. I haven't played BF since 2014.
@Felix Butterfield I'm playing Valhalla right now. I haven't played an AC game since BF. Valhalla is too much an rpg, and takes away from the fun. So far there isn't much assassination to it. I'm pretty old, and not much time for games anymore, but I might revisit BF. It was the best of them to me.
The end scene when anne bonny sings and you see all those lost makes me tear up every time! Sailing along listening to sea shantys brings me pure joy. Unbeatable in the AC series
@@RestInValhalla And that smile that just shines from Edward the moment he sees her face. He is looking at the most beautiful treasure he will ever see.
@DasTemplar 96 Yea is an incredibly touching moment. Just reading that notification almost made me tear up lol I just completed the main campaign in Valhalla today. It was great, but emotionally, it wasn't on par with the depth of Black Flag. The Viking in me loved it, the soft boy in me wanted Black Flag levels of storytelling
Black Flag is one of those games you wish you could play again with no memory. I've played it a few times and I still LOVE sailing with the Jackdaw. But it makes me sad that I'll never feel the same emotions I had when I sank my first warship and sailed away whilst me crew sang these wonderful shanties. It made me feel like I am the captain of a pirate ship for real
I’m about to do that...haven’t played it in years forgot almost everything except there is a fat friendly guy that sells sugar and stuff like that...I remember I had a lot of fun playing it but forgot about the story and the gameplay
“Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag is my favorite of them all.” Yep, enough said! There’s so much to like about this game. I’ve played them all, most all of them multiple times. And Black Flag, for me, is still the best of them all.
The ship combat in this game is still unbeaten today. The way you could unlock more and stronger guns, giving you more options as you level up in terms of fighting is amazing. And the aiming with the cannons while sailing feels so nice, i gotta play this game again.
I finally played Black Flag for the first time this year and was amazed that a game from 2013 still holds up so well in 2021. The water, the foliage, the lighting, the sound design. And that's not even including how it managed to mix the free running assassin stuff and ship-to-ship combat so seamlessly. I FELT like a pirate exploring a tropical paradise during the golden age of piracy. No game has done sailing better. When you catch the wind just right and your ship rises over a swell as the crew breaks into song? Perfect.
@@pauldirac808 and the wanted level worked the best where you could get to 5 stars and raise carnage. The wanted level never seemed to work well in subsequent games (Rogue and every one after).
I finally finished black flag yesterday and I teared up at Edward's beautiful character arc. His line of "For years I've been rushing around, taking whatever I fancied, not giving a tinker's curse for those I hurt. Yet here I am... with riches and reputation, feeling no wiser than when I left home. Yet when I turn around, and look at the course I've run... there's not a man or woman that I love left standing beside me." Was such a beautiful line
Or when they focused on immersion still and every AC game wasn’t just a bloated rpg with micro transactions... A Valhalla vs Unity comparison vid popped up on my recommend page, Unity was by far not the best AC game, but it’s really sad to see just how zoomed out everything is in comparison now, and how there aren’t really any crowds anymore, or special effects when you take a leap of faith, hell even just the way fabric moved seemed leaps and bounds beyond what we have now, and graphically.... all in a game released 7 years ago. Today’s AC can still be enjoyed, they aren’t all complete trash, but it’s sad to see what things have become
It's also my favourite AC game. And as a Portuguese myself, it was incredibly refreshing to not only SEE the Portuguese Empire (the longest lasting European Empire btw) represented in the game but to HEAR the NPCs speaking my mother language in proper Portuguese and NOT in Brazilian as it often happens. I would really love a careful remaster of this game to the new gen consoles.
How do you colonize a land then get mad about “proper” Portuguese, 😂 if you wanted it to be kept pure maybe you should’ve stayed on the Iberian peninsula
I’m not Portuguese but I do recognize and know some history of it and the different accents and was also surprised when I heard European Portuguese instead of Brazilian good job Ubisoft
@@daltongrubbs6688 before Blackbeard went bye bye his last words to Edward kenway were “in a work without gold we might have been heroes” and then he FRICKING DIES (that ast part isn’t criticizing it’s just my crappy humour)
fun fact: torres in real history was a pretty good guy, building orphanages for the kids left behind, hospitals for the sick and an alround stand up guy. ubisoft wrote the story of torres well
Torres is also a good guy in AC4. It would be better to call him an antagonist, rather than a villain. He doesn't lie. He opposes, not just dislikes but opposes slavery and encourages his Templar subordinates to also move away from it. He believes what he is doing for the good of mankind and, to borrow a phrase from the man himself, "wears his convictions well".
Like Haytham, I consider Torres to be a shining example of what the Templar Order truly stands for. He doesn't seek control for power's sake. He genuinely believes in the "new order" the Templars are trying to bring about, and believes that controlling humanity will be the best way to ensure their peace and happiness.
Well, he was also accused of corruption so I ain't too sure about that. But still, he is a pretty well written character, not a one sided antagonist and not a flat boring one.
I'm a simple man. Whenever I see a video praising AC: Black Flag I instantly click the video! Great work, by the way, such an intriguing game on so many levels!
I got emotional playing the game when you see everyone that died sitting at the table, and it happened again when i saw the clip in this video. kinda shows how much i really loved this game
Wow dude me too. Ive been playing a lot but not progressing in the story. Makes me feel better knowing all the characters are still alive in the game world.
@@GixxerGR I set out to do that, but only managed to 100% ac2, unity, and odyssey, I have 70% on ac 3, and 80% on black flag, but to get platinum on PS4 you need multiplayer trophies, and it’s just impossible now since no one plays the multiplayer.
@@monkeycole8899 really? I played black flag multiplayer in October and only had to wait about 5 seconds to find a game. Maybe not right now since everyone is in vahalla but people come back since it is the only ac multiplayer
AC 4 Black flag is one of those games, where I can barely wait at work to finish off, and get lost in the awesome game world. I don't know how to explain it. Maybe it's the setting? I dunno
What makes Black Flag's setting special was the use of negative space with the oceans. It felt alive and dynamic and it allowed for all the locations on the sea to feel unique so it never felt like we were going to the same place twice. I feel that is something that is lost in the new AC games.
It's the entire game, not just the setting. This game has what no other AC has or probably will ever have judging where Ubisoft is going. I mean the sea battles of this game is better than some new games, let alone the rest of the content, amazing story, the NPCs, the setting and everything else lol. The only bad thing about this game is that they could have remastered it or even remade it with the OG crew just to bring the graphics up to date. It would have been better than AC3 remaster imo
@@justjoe5373 yeah problem is that ubisoft doesn't care a out the best remaster their only goal with those is that you can play em on the new platform so with ac3r out every ac game but the first one is playable on ps4/xone gen (and should be on ps5 but there is a bug with syndicate) so I think maybe they'll Release a syndicate patch for ps5 and a AC1 remaster in 2 years and then they won't care about the old games anymore
It was the variety of things to do. The story, assassin contracts, naval contracts, treasure maps, creed stories, fort battles, hunting, smuggler caves... not to mention the ship battle economy. The locations are also super varied. Villages and underwater areas and caves and cities (3different ones) and the open sea. It wasn’t bloated like odyssey though. You always had something cool to do.
@@natoklord That's the thing, they like it. I hated it in every game like poison. To me minimizing it only made it better. Not one trailer is about today's time. In the older ones it also exposes them in the worst way. No novelty of historical times, no swords and daggers, just badly drawn warehouse, and badly animated NPCs I don't care about, or some room in the woods. Who cares. In Black Flag they had some annoying First Person too. Which I never liked much.
I've played it numerous times and still get a little tear eyed when he talks with his daughter on the ship. Her asking if theyll see any pirates, and him saying there are no more pirates.😭
The thing that I noticed and appreciated from Black Flag story is that it has that light Red Dead Redemption coming of an era type of story. No more outlaws, no more pirates, all gone and replaced by an orderly society and a more civilized one. The main characters also have the time to redeem themselves and right the mistakes they did.
Something most people might not appreciate when playing black flag is the historical accuracy. Ubi always deliver on history, but with this era they had so much to pick from. Almost all the supporting cast are real, historically recorded pirates. "A merry life and a short one" Is a real quote from Black Bart, as are many other quotes from other characters. It's the ultimate pirate fantasy ever.
We also have to praise the fact that they add actual historical events and people into the game. Not only does this game entertain, it informs as well.
@@SkittlesInYourHand "The way they (Ubisoft) portray historical figures in this game (Black Flag) is horrendously inaccurate" -Willem, Gold and Gunpowder, Pirate Expert Blackbeard's death was at Ocracoke. Pirates didn't use galleons. The Royal Fortune was not that big. Brigs didn't have rams. "Gunboat" was a ship classification used for small ships with one MASSIVE gun or culverin. The gunboats in AC4 are sloops instead. And dozens inaccuracies among the historical figures. But still, Black Flag is the best AC game (Tied with brotherhood).
I personally really liked the little puzzles for hacking the computers in Abstergo, and it felt kind of cool to know that all the games are connected with little details like the reason you have to repair/calibrate computers in rogue is because you hacked them in black flag
I tried to do an exploit to board a legendary ship for 4 hours, then when I finally did it I ended up falling from the mast at the top of the ship and died.
@@extinctiongaming3556 the Legendary ships are a Nightmare to fight even for a well equiped Jackdaw, unless you know each ships strentgh and weakness. one encounter involves 2 of them, 1 will always try and Ram you, while the other will try and bombard you form afar, but if you get close to the ranged one the ramming one will swoop by and they will try and sandwhich you between eachother. firing their cannons in tandem. if the Jackdaw is equiped somewhat alright its a brutal fight.
I have to agree. I was heavily critical of their decision to do a pirate assassin creed game and I had to eat crow after playing it. As much as I normally hate remasters and remakes, I'd gladly buy this game again with some extra polish
I think black flag and odessey are the best games ubisoft ever brought the public. Nothing really beats them experience wise. I felt like a mercenary in ancient greece to, it was the most beautiful world i had played inside a game. So accurate and so amazing. Idk how they do it but so much research and archeology goes into these games. And it shows when you play it
It's so good that's it's hard to explain how good it is. That's the only way I can think of to describe how good it is. There is just a very special, and very rare type of magic in this game. I agree. Top 5 all time.
As a stand alone story, I would say it is the best game in the series. Edward’s arc, is really well written and well thought out. Also Ralph Ineson’s voice. Ralph Ineson is really just a fantastic actor.
I just loved the variation in missions and islands. The traveling feels the absolute smoothest where it doesn’t feel even on slow sailing that you’re mindlessly going forward. I actually totally forgot about the story until I had most of the map complete and islands explored, which is the one area I wish there was more
@@thevolta89 I'm hoping that's not all it is but I'm worried you're right. That's all I think they've shown off plus we've heard almost nothing about it in 3 years so I'm worried about what's happening with it
I disagree, the assassin part made it worse. I would rather a pirate game without the cumbersome parkour mechanics and assassins plot. I got so annoyed at boarding ships to get stuck running on the rails, or climbing the mast when I just was trying to fight. Just give me the same core piracy stuff, flesh out the base building and weapons and I would be in heaven.
It’s amazing to feel the love and heart developers put into a game. This is way up there on my list of most well executed games this decade. Right up there with Witcher 3 and god of war
Edward's transformation reminds me of another similar arc, Altair's arc, he goes from arrogant and not giving a fuck about the code to being humble and wise. God, the old games are filled with lovable characters. How could they dive into mediocrity the way they did?
I feel the best and worst worked on Valhalla. So much potential in-game. But it's just so tedious. Animations in cut scenes are weird. (bought unity last night and OMG it's good.) I have no sense of the story. Eivor was just a badass from day one ruling everything. I don't know who and why the side characters are and behave like they do. And the endless... Endless... Endless... Hunt for iron orbs and stuff. Voice acting is subpar for the most also. Beautiful setting but... It's like they just wanted to maximize playtime to enjoy the area, not the game.
At 30:30 Hey, I just want you to know...In real life, because most bullets travel faster than the speed of sound, the order is actually the bullet hitting, then the sound of the gunshot catching up. So it isn't bizarre that you see the bullet fly yet hear it afterward. Actually, that is more accurate.
Unfortunately I feel it would be too much work and Ubisoft has reached insane levels of greed these days. It's not about making a genuinely amazing game anymore. All about the $ and the $ alone anymore. Gone is the passion.
Yes. And imagine if they sured up the sword fighting a bit and made it so where a stowed sword doesn't just float along side the character. Also I'd love the choice to just use one sword over two (without having to pick up an enemy's sword, that is). A remake of this game would have me opening my wallet for this game yet again
@@ThePowerOfOneThePowerOfTwo I dont know, I thought the fighting was rather on point (pun intended). Bad the random instances where you stab the button and nothing happens. But that seems to be an AC trend throughout. The limits of map size to me was one of the worst factors of older games, and much improved in the most recent few where you can just dock anywhere and hop off (I never liked the jungle runs, just not natural or engaging). I think this would be where the story would struggle to work though.
This game could use a remake to look as good as Skull and Bones and seamless transitions sailing into cities would be an amazing game. A crouch button and combat like Ghost of Tsushima might be nice too.
Agreed, such a brilliant performance. I especially loved the performance of Matt Ryan after Mary Read's death. He really did an amazing job at portraying a broken man trying to rebuild himself into a man of principle
I think when people call it “a good pirate game but not a good Assassin’s game” they’re vastly overlooking how good of a story the game has. No, you aren’t playing as someone in the brotherhood, but you are playing as someone important who’s stuck between the two sides of the major conflict. We get a good look at both, and how Edward’s journey leads him to one over the other. It’s arguably an even more pure Assassin’s game because we’re getting an outsiders view.
If there is something I would say that I really love about Black Flag's story, is that it basically slaps the fantasy stereotype of pirates after treasure and that jazz. A new perspective and understanding of the Creed that could only be viewed if you are someone like Edward, and what happens if you misunderstand it. It's all different, and it remains at that high note.
@@maltimoto i fucked 3 man o wars together without fully upgraded jackdaw. They had me almost. But i still won i got shot from every direction with 3 man o wars 😂
@@cajunseasoning1846 Well yes, but their era has a triology, and events of Rogue are a result of Black Flag, and at te same time they make possible the events of lll
I love taking out forts and then engaging in battle inside the fort. It’s so cool when I’m running by massive amounts of people clashing with explosions happening all around me
Games are becoming more and more scripted. I understand the more you script a game, the more detail the game can have, but even I can tell older games were something else.
My favorite quote from blackbeard is: "if a man plays a fool, then it's only fools he'll persuade. But appear to be the devil, then all men will submit."
This has always been my favorite due to story and just being able to be a pirate. I listen to the shanties through iTunes. If I have a bad day, I listen to the shanties to cheer me up. 😅
I have never understood how people enjoy the shanties. I hated them always kept the song muted. I mean it’s not a bad thing but we’ll just can’t understand how people find them fun
@@ahmedsachwani2868 Wish I could explain it. Lol. It might have something to do with my enjoyment of the time period. I also enjoy Celtic style music as well. There is a small local band I listen to with this style. There is even a pirate metal band I enjoy!
It's funny, I think I've played this game four times in the almost 6 years that I've had it... And even though I know it's coming, that "Parting Glass" scene still hits me like a punch in the gut. Also, I think this is the only AC game where I found myself cycling back to the original outfit. I don't know, there's just something about Duncan's robes that they just got so right.
Having authentic voice actors makes a world of difference to me, especially accents from the British Isles that I’m familiar with. Valhalla’s voice acting is really patchy, and having a U.S actor doing a British regional accent is always going to demolish the immersion for me
You have no idea how I'm missing the characters of black flag like they are real people after playing the game, and I know playing it again won't make me feel any better.
That's the thing about this series, it was never marketed as the assassin's fantasy but moreso the pirate fantasy and it works because of how well the game actually mixes both into edward, him having the combat capabilities of a pirate while having the stealth and agility of an assassin is blended together so well that they compliment each other.
This game made my childhood. It’s my favorite assassins creed game and it really was that good. Edward was an amazing character and is way underrated. No matter how old I am I will always remember playing as Edward Kenway and sailing the sea on the Jackdaw.
Black flag might have my favorite ending in any video game I ever played. Seeing all the people he lost along his journey along with him finally meeting his daughter honestly made me tear up a little bit
I was going to replay this again soon, and watching this got me super excited to jump into it again. It easily has one of the best narratives in the series. Edward’s arc is an unforgettable one. I remember the first time I played the game I didn’t pay much attention to the story, and it felt unfocused, but on a second play-through, everything clicked for me and I was blown away.
Black Flag is a fucking fantastic video game. It’s the only AC game that has ever been on par with the first 4, for me. 31:26 You’ve gotta use those projectiles, man! That’s the secret sauce. Sleep darts, pistols and throwing knife are the meta to BF stealth. Also, make sure you’re using bushes to their fullest potential. Pull High Profile to stand up out of bushes momentarily to lure people into them for easy kills. BF is probably the best game in the franchise for guard manipulation, so be sure to use that to your advantage! Overall, great video. BF is one my favourites, and the Kenway games in general have a special place in my heart. Glad to see you loved the game so much :)
Thanks so much Jcers! Glad you liked the vid :) I definitely need to use more tools! Sleep darts were fun but I feel like I didn't have the patience to use all those tools properly. I'll remember these tips next time I jump back in! The Kenway games really are special. Maybe an AC3 video is in order?
@@jayveeeee I’d love to see an AC3 video! Also, if you haven’t played Rogue yet, definitely do so! Gameplay-wise, it’s fairly similar to BF, but I feel that you might appreciate the setting more for stealth, as it starts to really push the urban stealth that games like Unity & Syndicate do (albeit in a much more robust fashion than Rogue).
Torres was my favorite antagonist in the series and the voice actor killed it as well. I loved that Torres had a hard stance against slavery and even rebuked the slaver Prins when he was walking with him in Kingston, while Edward was following. That moment where you pass the slave who was about to be executed was unique since you could save that slave by putting the gunner to sleep with a dart. The officer will check on him and the slave will then run away. British officer: "Die like a man slave." Slave: "Why act like a man now, when you have denied me that right for 30 years!" Every line in this movie delivered perfectly, and some like above hit hard
Man I really really related to Black Flag so much I've been playing that game 16 times over again I've been loving it I can't wait for they going to remaster it like one thing I love the story line I love how he is Passion an arrogant but become a master at the ending and knowing what is wrong and right
the final scene " the parting glass" always leaves a lump in my throat just an incredible and emotional storyline, no other assassins creed or game for that matter has been this powerful, if only a sequel came along, we miss Edward
I'm a late comer to the AC series since Odyssey caught me and I started going through the back catelog. Black Flag is an exceptionally good game. Easily the best pirate game I've seen even down to the Kenway's Fleet minigame. Thanks for the fun video... might have to load it up again. :)
I've never been one to play games multiple times solely for the story but this is one I have played at least 4 times and enjoyed every second of it. Thatch's death is so emotional and the ending singing and Edward meeting his daughter almost makes me cry every time, it's so beautiful. A timeless masterpiece if you ask me.
My favorite memory of playing Black Flag was playing it on Halloween night and kids were trick or treating. This one kid was with his mom and after giving the kid candy, he shouts to his mom. “He’s playing Assassins Creed!” After I closed the door. Hope that kid is having a great life.
This was really one of the most defined and complete review or critique of Black Flag. I really enjoyed it, I highly appreciate how you highlighted all those things which make this game such a gem. It really is on a league of it's own. It's the only AC I ever tried to complete 100%, and enjoyed all parts of it.
Black Flag came out in a really hot summer in Australia. It was the perfect pairing, sweating in the heat while drinking a beer from the special edition mug and sailing around a ship on screen in a tropical world. There was a bunch of other fun things happening in life and everything has combined into one long positive memory of that time. Will always be one of my favourite games
This has got to be the best open-world game for me. Just the plantations, the hunting, the whaling and the naval bases made this game more fun to explore than the story
I absolutely love this game and it's my personal favorite. I got back and do new play thoughts every once in a while. Now, seeing Anne singing the Parting Glass and seeing everyone that died sitting at that table. That always gets me.
I enjoyed the game a lot, honestly i loved the hunting for parts in black flag, making a ship strong enough to rule the seas was amazing, i honestly suggest going back and getting all the parts and taking on the legendary ships. Its a fun experience to rampage through the ocean as a near unstoppable force, adding ships of.monstrous sizes to your fleet and using them to free the trade routes around the west indies and the areas such as africa and europe. Plus the upgrades are visible on the ship for the most part. The gold trim is amazing.
My favourite part of this game was the legendary ship battles because they proved a real challenge and the music filled me with dread when i first entered the fight, then just after the fight begins you feel as if you've made a mistake by coming here because the legendary ship is much bigger than yours so you feel powerless compared to them, and your only chance of survival at that point is to defeat the legendary ship is to flee or beat them.
Also im going to list the three legendary ship battles here: the first one is The Rammer (i dont remember the names so im going to give them custom names) the rammer is a regular man o war although it has more health but its special mechanic is that it will occasionally try to ram you and if it does it will fucking destory you, even if you have maxed out armour, also it gets more aggressive the less health it has. The Twins: they are like the rammer but theres two and they each have half of the amount of the rammer. When one ship goes down the other gets angry and attempts to ram you more, also it has the same mechanic as the rammer when it comes to low health. The Fog Ship. This ship is a lot different fromthe others; instead of moving around and trying to shoot and ram you, it instead hides in the massive fog the surrounds the area and rains powerful morters onto you. The good thing is that it has less health because your not going to see as much as the others because of the fog. Im pretty sure thats all of them, so im only listing three.
I already have the platinum trophy for this game, and I’mma replay it. This game is a masterpiece, straight up. I love how Edward wash born into the Brotherhood, but lied and murdered his way into an ancient war and global conspiracy for booty. Dude was such a thug, selfish and dirty. He had no regrets in the beginning, barely any moral compass. But then he grew one, and redeemed himself. I love this game.
A little known fact about Assassin's Creed Black Flag. Ubisoft took a lot of inspiration for the game and it's systems directly from Sid Meyers Pirates.
