In this Assassin's Creed 'detective' like video, I simply point out the senselessness surrounding a major plot twist in Assassin's Creed III, not as a means to hate or criticise, but just for the sake of pointing out the plot twist's silliness and having a laugh. Enjoy! If you have suggestions for future AC 'detective' like videos, please let me know in the comments.

Connor didn't kill Washington because, yes, history for one thing. But in the context of the game, it would not have benefited him. Washington was the man who was keeping the revolution from failing. If he died, than so would the hopes for an independent nation. This goes against the interests of the Assassins. If the British won the war, than that also means that the Templars win. If the Templars win, than Brotherhood becomes broken for a second time. By not killing Washington and getting his revenge, Connor kept the third tenant of the Assassin's Creed: " Do not compromise the Brotherhood."
@lordwolfgang3608
@lordwolfgang3608 7 лет назад
And FYI. Connor did kill Washington in "The Tyranny of King Washington." I'm not sure if that counts since it was basically all a dream, but he did kill him in that dream.

To quote Ruby Rose. "Do you think that just because you have nuts and bolts instead of squishy guts, makes you any less real then me?" If it looks real, and feels real, it may as well be real. Of course Tyranny of King Washington counts, because it happened to Connor, in his personal history.
@lordwolfgang3608

Yes, but it was all a dream or a fantasy, remember? Connor "killed" Washington after their fight on top of the pyramid. They fell through the glass ceiling and into the chamber below. Washington grabbed the apple in a final attempt to win and than Connor approached Washington on his thrones. As Connor got closer to the throne, Washington appeared as Connor's best friend, his mother, and finally as Connor himself. Connor than grabbed the apple and the vision faded away to show Connor and Washington standing beside a fire, the apple between them. BTW, Washington did "die" in the final battle of "The Redemption." But it wasn't by Connor's hand. The fall most likely caused Washington to die from internal bleeding.

YEAH, i think you have the point. But Ubisoft didn't put enough weight on this plot point, just like what's shown in the video, after learning the truth , Connor worked it out pretty quickly and went back to hunt the templars, he should at least show some kind of struggle,right? After all , it was his mother for christ's sake. I think Ubisoft screwed up with the AC3 storytelling, it could have been a much better story.

I think it is supposed to show that Connor at that point changed his focus from revenge to ideology, that he disagreed with the Templars rather than just wanting revenge

Fizhy just because you don't like AC3 doesn't mean everything was awful, Connor changed quite a bit during the story obviously (not killing Washington being the first proof) and i enjoyed the game a lot. Not just because of the awesome new combat system, first naval battles, great graphics and etc. but because of him as a character as well...
@jackwarr4251
@jackwarr4251 7 лет назад
Fizhy yeah I agree, the change was there but as assassins creed does best, writes a good story but screws up presenting the story to the audience.
@jackwarr4251
@jackwarr4251 7 лет назад
Fizhy the story is good but isn't translated to the game very well in ac. For instance this, and black flag. Black flag should've had some cutscenes at the start showing Edwards backstory, as after learning that and playing the game again I can sympathise with him, but without knowledge of that backstory most of Edwards actions are unjustified and you just think he is a dick. If they had a extra sequence of Bristol where his house was burned down by Caroline's father etc the games story would've been the best in the series.

Like the others have said, I feel that Connor staying his hand was a sign of personal growth. He had been all out trying to get revenge on Lee until that point, and by the time he learned Lee wasn't WHOLLY responsible (I think he served under Washington), it didn't matter. Lee was still a Templar, and the Revolution, not it's leader, was still a force Connor needed to support.

A bit off-topic: I loved the interaction between Connor and Haytham. I wish Haytham wouldn't have been killed. He was simply awesome. Not only that, he was quite honest for a Templar. True, he did kill unnecessarily, but do you remember his anger towards Braddock for killing people totally innocent?

I took this as more of a maturity thing for Connor. He joined the assassins to fight injustice and protect his village not avenge his mother's death. He assumed Lee killed his mother and kept that in the back of his mind but didn't act on it until he discovered that his revenge and protection of his village were one and the same. After that he decided that killing Washington would only hurt the people that needed him to lead this infant nation. This is why I feel Connor forgot but never forgave.

Let's not forget the cut scene during Connors first stages of training with Achilles. His vendetta may have began with Charles Lee but if we all recall after Achilles explained the secret war that had been going on between the assassin's and the Templars for centuries his focus became about serving the brotherhood. Yes he still had a personal vendetta or at least a score to settle towards Lee but his drive became a little less personal after being shown the bigger picture. Washington wasn't a Templar therefore on a larger scale he wasn't Connors enemy. I suppose that's what being an assassin's about, finding the drive to move past personal gain for the greater good.

I disagree that the George Washington twist near the end was pointless. The way I see it, that twist forced Conner to really think about what he was doing and most importantly, WHY he was doing it. Up until that point, fighting the Templars was a simple matter for him. He disagreed with what they were fighting for and the man he believed to be his mother's murderer was among them. By learning that Lee was not in fact his mother's killer and that the true culprit was Washington, it forced Conner to make a choice. Does he stay true to the ideals of the Creed and continue the fight for freedom even though this means aiding the man that killed his mother, or does he turn his back on the Revolution for the sake of vengeance against Washington? Ultimately he decides to temper his hatred and continue to fight for his convictions. He put his ideals ahead of his desire for vengeance. That is an important moment for his character and shows growth. I do think that plot point could have been handled a bit more carefully where Conner might hesitate a little and start to lose his way before making his decision, but I still think the moment in itself was good. The thing that bothered me most in that scene wasn't the Washington reveal, but the issue of why Haytham waited so long to reveal this information in the first place. Sure Conner might not have believed him at first if he had said something earlier, but he would have eventually seen that Haytham was telling the truth when his village was attacked again by Washington's men. Waiting to reveal the truth to Conner only succeeded in making it look like Haytham was trying to manipulate Conner's feelings. This of course put Conner on guard and made him distrust his father. Haytham would have been better off Telling Conner the truth as soon as possible, It might have strained their relationship in the short term, but would have been better for the relationship in the long term after Washington had revealed his true colors.

Connor continued assisting Washington because he was indirectly fighting the Templars. It would have made no sense to kill him as an Assassin. I also like this scene because it shows how Connor has evolved past his lust for revenge, he now only wants to kill Lee out his duty to the Creed. Also, killing Washington at that moment would have been suicide.

I think this was meant to show how Connor has matured from acting on impulse to thinking rationally. He never really forgives Washington for it, but he does let him know that if he gets in the way, he’ll die.

Connor does make a good point about Haytham knowing about this the whole time, if he had sided with Connor's village and brought him into the Templar order as a child then he could have prevented all of this. Although this is all a result of the extremely bizzare and contrived actions taken from Haytham in order to make sure that against all odds Connor ends up on the winning side of history even if they betrayed him as well.

So if Charles Lee wasn't there at the forest that day.. Connor would've easily have been a Templar. Sure, Achillies wouldn't have trained him. But Haytham would discover him and train him later. And we already know that Haytham is better than Achillies.

This game is so full of plot holes I can't even follow. I am playing it again on the Remastered and noticed quite a few things already. When his mother is trapped on fire, the strong guy gets Connor. Why didn't ye try to save his mother instead? He was strong enough to pull her, even if would hurt her legs. A bit later, he comes to Aquiles that shows him the portraits of the Templars. And Connor says he needs to kill all, even his father, and Aquikes agrees. At no point the game shows her mother telling about his father, not he talking about Haytan to Aquiles. It was a complete mess with a bad protagonist that is way too obtuse.
@kinorris1709
@kinorris1709 4 года назад
To be fair, it can be assumed that the book Connor shoved under the table after his mother found him reading it was Haytham's journal. It would explain why he tried to hide it. Also, she may have spoken of him offscreen (not really a good excuse to leave us in the dark). But yeah, most plot points were more like plot holes.

In assassins creed forsaken haytham gave his own reason for not killing Washington, he suggested that over the years he had indeed changed unlike Charles that continued to be bad. So it likely connor went by the same reason. "Its a human failing to see the changes in yourself whilst assuming everyone else remains the same." Even if you dont agree with it including me it doesn't take away from the fact the series did kinda address it. As he wondered if "connor was right about him"

This did happen very similarly in actual history but the reason Connor didn't kill Washington is what good would it have done? Charles Lee was enough for him and he was tasked to kill Lee as an Assassin anyway. Plus the two kind of laughed off their situation when they were both near death sharing a drink. Connor learned that revenge always isn't the answer especially later it was revealed his tribe were forced away from their land by Washington which again also similarly happened in actual history

Charles Lee was Washington's subordinate at the time Conner's village was burned down. Although they never came out and said so, I believe the Templars still had a great deal to do with it. Especially when that particular tribe distrust the Templars. Haytham, on the other hand felt shame behind it all, because he believed Conner and his Zio would escape the raid. That's why he (Haytham) was shocked to hear of Zio's death. Like Conner said, "How long where you sitting on this information? " "Everything Lee has done is by your command." IMO, Conner was right.

The dialogue says it all. Connor believed that Haytham knew about the burning of his village before it was revealed to Connor, and Washington doesn't deny or take responsibility which makes him untrustworthy as well. Connor warns both Haytham and Washington, but doesnt threaten either. Haytham later on decided to try and stop Connor, but like Connor said..."if you mess with me you will die. "George Washington never acted hostile toward Connor, and the Templars, from day 1 of encountering Connor, have been the exact opposite. Always leaving Connor with either an aggressive attitude or a few cuts and bruises.

Coming back, and there are lots of parts missing. -Haytham knew that the Hawk Village was going to be burned and did nothing about it. That's where Connor questioned Haytham with quote "How long you sit on this information? Or do you expect me to believe that you just discover it?" -Regardless if "Templar was right", They are still aren't. Literally just when you start playing as Connor as an Assassin, Templars were buying property without the consent of the natives to even threaten them to give up their land and accept the purchase. -Charles Lee goals is to enforce Natives to adapt to civility instead of "Sleeping on the grounds like Animals". -They manipulated the Natives to believe Washington was a threat to their tribe even though he isn't to side with the Redcoats which made Washington believe that Tribes are siding with the Redcoats. -Even if Connor goal was to seek revenge it goes against the Assassin's Goals. Assassins and the Patriots seek a nation where Freedom is the goal post. If he killed Washington, the British would win, which goes against the Assassin's goals. Washington was a necessity to achieve the Assassin's Goal. -Literally Ezio spared the Pope even though he seeked revenge and decided to spare him to see him fall and broken, to later have his Villa attacked by Cesare who was only in power because of the Pope. His alliance criticized him for not killing him and if he was killed, Cesare wouldn't be in power and AC Brotherhood wouldn't exist. Not to mention that the Pope literally poisoned Cesare who took a fucking chunk of apple and ate it, while the Pope died 4 minutes after being poisoned or choked by Cesare shoving an apple that he took a bite against his mouth, and somehow the writers forgot that he was poisoned and had pretty much the most boring ending AC Brotherhood.

The point was that even upon this discovery, Connor knows that he cannot let his personal desire for revenge get in the way. They are more things at stake and Connor still sees redeeming qualities in Washington. If he had went out of his way and killed Washington, all that the Assassins had fought for would’ve been dismantled. This really does show that Achilles taught Connor well, to stay on course with the tenants no matter what. “Never Compromise the Brotherhood” He knows that despite Washington being a man of deep controversy, and responsible for Connor’s tragedy, he still is fighting for a nation to be free. It even shows Haytham that his son isn’t simply a naive boy. He’s a grown man who fights for his creed without compromise or bending the rules. When you think about it, it basically makes Connor strangely one of the best written Assassins in the whole series. A man who is torn between protecting his people and playing a huge part in the birth of a new nation, yet he lets the tenants of the Creed guide him no matter what obstacle gets in his way. Washington is a complex figure with many good qualities to level out the bad ones. Charles Lee has no good qualities, so in the end, yes, Charles Lee is still the bad guy in the story.

this plot twist was here to confirm Conner's character. Up till this point Conner was portrayed as someone who was driven by justice and ideals (like he says in his line in the cutscene "my enemy is a notion not a nation"), that's cool and all but the story up till now showed him as somewhat of a revengey person like full on i live to kill, i live to exact revenge. Having this plot twist happen was meant to show that Conner was never really after lee and the other templars coz of revenge but rather coz it was the right thing to do for the people of his country or whatever.

I think Ubisoft meant to have Washington as one of Connor's antagonists originally, more so than Lee or Hathem. This reveal was supposed to happen at this point. In general, the story would've played out as Washington was fighting for american independence to actually try to position himself to be the first King of America. Through Connor's interventions, however, his plan was foiled and some kind of compromise was met that allowed Washington to live. Washington's whole "Absolute Power corrupts absolutely"-stance was just propaganda of the time. But I think Ubisoft decided not to take this route because they were worried that this type of story wouldn't have went over well in the american market.

In the real history George Washington was retired during the time that Connor's mother was killed. There is at least some circumstancial evidence that Charles Lee and the other Templars were responsible for the village being burned. Connor may have researched whether or not Washington was responsible by asking Achilles.

George Washington did not order the attack that killed Conner's mother. Washington says "We've" instead of "We'd" when explaining the letter to Haythem and Conner. Also the revolution happened after Conner grew up so Washington had nothing to do with Conner's mother's death. Washington did order ANOTHER attack on Conner's village but not the attack that killed his mother. And he ordered it because some natives we're helping the British during the war, which happened after the first attack. So Conner does have the right to be angry with Washington but he is not to blame for Charles Lee's doing.

Not so surprisingly, this flew over my head entirely when I first played the game. I think it was because I was so focused on the present issue. But it never made sense to me that Lee would give Ratonhnhaké:ton a warning, leave him alive, and then burn down the nearest village. But eventually "Where is Charles Lee" was so burned in my mind that I completely forgot about that. As several others said, it makes sense for Ratonhnhaké:ton to help the Colonists to keep the Templars away, but he faces consequences for that as the Americans still drive his people out west, and enslave Africans. The harsh reality faced is that fighting for freedom and justice for one did not lead to freedom and justice for all, as hoped. AC3 blurred the lines between the Assassins and Templars, as well as the Assassins and their own ideals. Ratonhnhaké:ton wanted everyone to be free, as with other assassins before him, but the only one he could truly count on to help with that goal was unable to fight from the start, so he did what he could on his own, but it was never going to be enough, since the Colonists and British cared only for themselves. Historical fiction gives us hindsight to know that Washington would not die, and the developers gave us a good reason to not kill him while still showing the inevitable consequences.

Adewale Connor was actually really smart in this situation. Wanna know what would've made him a total fucking idiot in this scenario? Killing the one guy the Templars have been trying so desperately to replace with one of their own guys so they can take control of an entire nation in one fell swoop. Connor saw the bigger picture and decided to put the brotherhood before his personal interests instead of dooming millions of people in favor of a few dozen of his own people. It was an impossibly tough call to make and Connor handled it very maturely and level headedly considering what was on the line and how the news was broken to him. He constantly reminded Washington of his betrayal and dishonesty afterwards but also saw the importance of ensuring his victory in the grand scheme of things. I haven't seen any other Assassin make such a hard decision between personal feelings/interests and the betterment of the brotherhood and its cause since Altaïr had to kill Al Mualim, his own father figure and the only family he had for the longest time, to ensure everyone's freedom.

I agree with you in some points, but if he killed Washington he would became an enemy from the revolution, and the templars would have won, moreover, as Juno told him, if the templars had won they would destroy his village again, in the visions, of course she was also manipulating him, but he couldn't have done much about it. What I didn’t like is that the plot doesn’t develop the Washington’s charisma or the friendship between the two, and Connor considered Washington as a friend and admires him, but that was not well developed. The plot should have given more of that, the battles and military missions with these historic characters.

Yeah, I never understood why Connor held on to his hatred for Charles Lee. After figuring out he didn’t kill his mother, even if he had at that point already committed to the Assassin cause, you’d think he at least wouldn’t still have that burning hatred for him. But he did. And completely ignored the fact that Washington was the one responsible. Although I love the game anyway, it is one of my least favorite Assassin’s Creed game. It is made better though by the rest of the Kenway saga.

Its my belief (complete conjecture of course) originally in development Connor was to turn against Washington for real. Hes a close confidant to Braddock during the Seven Years War, and knows Charles Lee and Haytham very personally and in real life he was very much a Free Mason, which is a real life group with to the ancient templars. I believe the twist was that Connor would help the colonists win then find his people even worse off than before, which he actually does. His people are eventually chased out of the valley, and all the red coats are replaced with the same types just wearing blue. I believe making Washington a real enemy was a concern because he is actually still regarded quite highly to Americans. Im American. Im a history buff and know he had alot of fuckups that may have caused the 7 years war but most of the time he's venerated and remembered as a hero and humble and truthful. Our myths say he cut down a cherry tree but admitted it with "I can not tell a lie". Its very strange how positive of a spin time put on the guy. All this aside, when I first saw the first trailer of AC3 I called it immediately that Washington was a Templar. At the end of the trailer, Connor reveals that red Templar cross the British commander has and kills him. Washington sees this and while all the other patriots are spirited up and cheering and charging forward Washington face says nothing else but "well fuck me". This is all a hypothesis though. I dont know if they planned this originally i just think they did.

For me, Connor grew up so much in the game, he went from being just a boy who just wants to kill Charles Lee and save his people, to being an Assassin who wants the freedom of all the oppressed, but still has a lot to learn, yes Achilles taught him everything he knows, but he is still a native who does not understand the behavior of people at all, for that reason he is deceived and used as happened with Washington and his own father, Haytham, sorry, but for me is one of the best Assasin's.

I think it would have been great for Connor to have a similar moment to Ezio. He kicks the shit out of Washington, then lets him go. He knows Washington deserves to die but puts his own personal vengeance aside for the good of the nation and the Brotherhood. It would be amazing for Haytham to be there for it, and then they do the whole "do you think I believe you only discovered this now?" I think a great way to end the scene would be for Connor to pull a gun on Haytham. He wouldn't fire, but he'd keep it raised until Washington was in the clear. This would also be a chilling realisation for Haytham, as he'd finally understand there's no hope of reconciling with Connor. He would see the look in his son's eyes, and know Connor's not bluffing. If Haytham so much as twitches, Connor will pull the trigger.

2:53 An interesting thought just occurred to me in this part of the video. I noticed Haytham looking at the letter General Washington had on the desk, giving the orders to assault and burn native villages. This was the part Haytham just discovered this information. When he presented this information, which then lead to the argument, Connor sets himself on saving his people, for which Haytham wanted to help. BUT Connor prevents him from doing so, claiming that Haytham knew about this information for a long time and withheld it. Either Connor's attention span is terribly small or he just does not like his father and said that to spite him. What are your thoughts on that? (agree or disagree, this is just something I kept spotting for a while where noone addressed that) (or am I just bringing this up in the wrong kind of video)

BT Winzer It would be naive of Connor to think Haythem didn’t inquire with Charles Lee about what happened to Connor’s village and learned what actually happened. This is a problem for sure. I can think of justifications, but none that fits with Connor's enduring hatred for Lee even after this revelation. Stuff like distrusting Haytham, not knowing for sure, considering Washington too important to kill etc. But with Lee still being treated like the game's final boss, none of those really suffice. It seems Connor was simply too set in his hatred for Lee, and would take any excuse to perpetuate it. Respectably human character flaw if so, but the story should have made more of a point out of that being what it was, if Ubi wanted credit for such writing.
