Here's a valid argument for Kesegowaase: The confusion between him and Connor as the first Native American Assassin is because the Templars might've destroyed all records of the Assassin's presence in the colonies after the purge.

I keep on seeing people talking about “The Great Purge” where everybody dies but all I can think about is Haytham saying to Shay “Execute Order 66” then Shay goes and kills everyone.

The reason Kessegowase wasn't known was because during the great purge in 1763 basically all of the assassin records were destroyed. This was mentioned in 3 so everyone assumed Connor was the first native American assassin. Haytham didn't didn't care about Adewale enough to mention him. He was his fathers friend other than that big deal. He never knew him personally. There is also at least a 10 year gap in Haythams journal so Shay was most likely mentioned but they only put Haythams origin and followed AC3 from Haythams POV. Thus being said AC Rogue was a potential plot hole but Ubisoft knew all of this and ensured it wouldn't be.

First off, It says in Rogue's in game database at Haytham that no one knows why he left Shay out of his journal. Second Chevalier tells Shay (if you choose to go hand-to-hand) that no one will remember Shay, so the assassins might have erased all traces of Rogue's events without telling newer assassins that may have caused every one to forget (as time went on) about Shay's part in the fall of Achilles' brotherhood

Thomas Richards The inclusion of a 16 year gap in Forsaken can corroborate with the tearing out of pages or some detail or another Besides, the content of Forsaken was always based on his more personal view on his missions and his own important documentations, rather than the retelling of the whole game
@kylegoyak8510

Thomas Richards the templars destroyed all record of the colonial assassins and the reason why everyone forgot Shay was because he spent the next 16 years hunting for the precursor box.
@DevilHunter1994
@DevilHunter1994 6 лет назад
Perhaps Shay was doing something of crucial importance for the Templar Order and Haytham didn't want to put any information about Shay in his journal for fear that he might unintentionally write something that could clue someone in as to what Shay was doing. Leaving him out of the records entirely would be the safest way to make sure that one of the Templar's greatest assets doesn't become compromised.
@Smurfaliscous

I know it's not an official explanation but I saw a fan comic one time that showed Shay telling Haytham to keep him out of his journals because he didn't want to be remembered and I think that actually makes some sense for the character

If I remember correctly they had an explanation for how Kesegowaase was the first Native American Assassin. I remember some mention in one of the Assassin's Creed 3 codex entries that most of the records about the Colonial Brotherhood were destroyed in the Purge, and they just couldn't know whether or not Connor was the first Native American Assassin.

Different topic and nitpick but perhaps worth a video: What position did Ezio take in the Brotherhood after his passing? Altair had statues build for him, even in Italy many centuries after he died, yet there is nothing left of Ezio. Not in America, not in Paris, not in London. It's like the Brotherhood forgot about him and, more importantly, his Revelations.
@David-nq8cv
@David-nq8cv 7 лет назад
Yes but Altair didn't want statues made, it was the other assassin's who made that decision as a tribute, and they didn't forget about Ezio, remember what Achilles said "Ezio uncorked the bottle" which meant that like Ezio release the Isu from the vault in Rome, Evie states it in her journal that Jacob doesn't know or care about Ezio, and probably ezio didn't want it, remember in Embers he said "No! For me that life is over" When Shao jun wanted to learn on what it truly means to be an assassin
@basslightyeah
@basslightyeah 7 лет назад
Punished Fernando Sure but even though he didn't want to be an assassin anymore the brotherhood could have remembered him, I don't see how it contradicts his choice. And I always felt Achile's quote a bit of an understatement, but that may just be me.
@David-nq8cv
@David-nq8cv 7 лет назад
That is true, maybe they did do something in honor of Ezio but we wouldn't know unless they make another character around that time, so we at least have proof that the brotherhood did honor ezio even after his retirement and passing
@norseca542
@norseca542 7 лет назад
Not as much as Altair who's considered the godfather of the brotherhood but still: At some point in his life, Ezio wrote a codex detailing the events of his life; including those that transpired in the Vatican Vault, which was named the Prophet's Codex. By 2002, it was located in the library of Ivan the Terrible underneath the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, protected by the Assassins, though it was eventually retrieved by the Templar agent Daniel Cross, who handed it over to Abstergo Industries.[19] In the year 2000, a statue of Ezio could be found in "the Mentor's" Dubai facility, alongside statues of other prominent Assassins.

I think there are a number of canonical reasons that Shay is not included in the Forsaken novels. The first could be that Haytham never felt the need to write about the events at the time of the game or that Shay specifically asked for him not to leave any records of his existence because he regretted what he had to do or that at some point that section of his diary was lost or destroyed. However, I think the most likely reason is that Haytham did write about Shay in his diary, however, I'd like to point out that at the very beginning of Forsaken there is an entire page that says only "Extracts from the Journal of Haytham E. Kenway". Meaning that Forsaken is plain and simple not the entirety of Haytham's journal. It is the sections of the journal that Connor took and put together based on what he thought was the most important parts of Haytham's life. Primarily, it details things related to either Haytham and his family or significant emotional events that shaped who he was as a person and while Rogue was a very large event in the series, it was not a huge moment for Haytham's development as a person. It was simply a part of his everyday business as a Templar fighting the assassins and likely not something Connor felt was relevant enough to include in his extracts. Of course, out of universe it simply would be that either they did not plan the events of Rogue ahead of time enough to include them or did not tell Oliver Bowden about them because they would have spoiled much of the game as Forsaken was released well before Rogue.

I'm really surprised you didn't mention the ending because it takes place in 1776 and Charles Dorian mentions that Conor and the American Revolution undid what Shay did, but then Charles Lee wasn't killed until 1782 so therefore nothing Conor did really happened at that point. So how would Charles be able to predict this or why would he at least think this when in 1776 that's just when the Declaration was signed and Conor was pretty much unknown to the world of Assassins? And how would Shay know what the hell Dorian was talking about when he says all this? I personally think that's a bigger mess up than any of the plot points. It always pisses me off because I actually really like Rogue for Shay's character.

LUIS LOZANO PRODUCTIONS I guess that could make sense, but the Templar presence was still large at that time. Idk. I think it was more of meant to be a "hey fans will like this" moment, but in terms of timeline it just doesn't make much sense. Only way I can imagine him hearing about Conor is if killing Johnson, Pitcairn, and Hickey where that big of deals. And if he knew Conor for killing those targets, then he wasn't really a good assassin.

Haythem at the end of rogue gave shay a job.... A important and difficult one we still dont know he results of... Get the box... The box and artifact that led to the things that cause massive earth quakes and could destroy the earth itself... That was shay's job. Given to him by?? Haythem. Thats a MASSIVE secret and job, and not just a secret. But a secret that could end the world if the wrong people found out. Of COURSE he wouldnt mention shay... As shay's MAIN MANDATE. And LARGEST point of shay's life and job... Revolves around the massive secret of the box.... Anyone knowing about shay? Risks learning of said box. As we did many times in rogue's story. And learning of shay's main mission, of course haythem isnt going to not only risk shay. But risk the world... In a silly journal.

What if the Haytham plot hole does actually fit into canon? This is how I see it, right: So, as I'm sure we all know, Shay was the Order's first Black Cross, or at the very least he's the earliest known Templar to hold the title. The idea behind the Black Cross is that they're supposed to be a secret from even other Templars, kind of like an Undercover Boss situation. What if Haytham purposely left out Shay because he didn't want to risk exposing Shay's title to the rest of the Templars? To me, it makes perfect sense. If Shay is supposed to be a secret from the rest of the order, why would Haytham risk exposing that secret in his journal? Even though it was his private journal, Haytham knew a long life wasn't guaranteed in his line of work, and if he ever died prematurely, his journal would be free game for anyone to read, someone like Lee for example. Now, I know the American templars were all there for his initiation, but everybody knew about Otso Berg too. They just dont know about him being the Black Cross. The title is the secret, not the man, but at the same time, exposing his adventures with Shay could have lead to him exposing Shay's identity as well, so he left it out of his journal.

Great video! Rogue was my favorite game for sure, and it's too bad that it is a huge plothole. Few more plotholes found: Christopher Gist. Real man in history, was very close with George Washington. He would've been around in AC3 events probably aiding Washington. Benjamin Tallmadge- In AC3 says his father was an Assassin. Probably would've been around somewhere in Rogue with Achilles' Assassins, Shay probably would've killed him. No sign of him. They could've definitely written this in. I'll think of more! But Haytham's journal was the biggest. :/ The only thing I can think of is Shay, at the end of Haytham's life, returned to the colonies and ripped out any remnants of this part of the story because he didn't want to be discovered by Connor. As, in reality, Shay dropped off the radar completely.

When it comes to Haytham in Rogue, it completely destroys the narrative that was set up in III with him gathering his group when he first arrives (and yet none of the characters from Rogue are there to help Haytham during or after his part of III, even though Connor didn't kill them in III, nor did the Brotherhood in Rogue). Then there's the deal of the Assassins taking on the role that the Templars have always been portrayed to hold with taking hostages.

Remember what Berg said about Shay: "He may be the most important Assassin who ever lived." He says this--as a Templar-- because of Shay's story. His story is basically a conversion tool, hence why Berg wanted to release the Animus footage of Shay's life to the world. This is also why Shay's Animus file was bugged with a virus, and why Kessegowase and company were given no record. To tell Shay's story is to admit the Assassins can be wrong. Achilles was still given record because he trained Connor who rebuilt the American Brotherhood

Forsaken doesn't cover Haytham's entire life. There are blank periods spanning years, and he even mentions that he rewrites some of the entries. Besides which, how stupid would it be for the grandmaster of a clandestine order to write down all the details of his life? He clearly only wanted to tell Connor about the parts that were directly relevant to him, and telling him about Shay would've revealed not only Shay's existence, but also the Tree of Eden that the assassin's were messing around with.

Forsaken could be an incomplete diary, like the templars stole the part about the seven years war so shay could be kept a secret, like their secret assassin hunter, a shadow hunting shadows, Shay could have been covered up by the templars, it would also explain why no one mentions him, well why haythem doesn't, the Templars don't want the Assassins to gain information on their personal attack dog

What if Haytham wanted to keep Shay's existence as an asset/ assassin-turned-templar a secret so that he could carry out missions without being known and not be a big target to the assassins? Shay is sorta like Haytham in that regard except he isn't known as a turncoat yet to the other assassin sects so he's valuable to the Templar cause. Just a thought

What if Haytham wrote the journal for Conor and that's why it says everything about the Templars and not Shay. Because Haytham wanted to convince Conor the Templars were right, but he wouldn't want to tell him about Shay because Conor would likely seek revenge and get himself killed.

I may be remembering wrong, but isnt the Leader of connor's tribe familiar with the assassins symbol, and even directs him towards achilles house, so doesnt this kinda show that the native americans where aware of the assassins. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head for why rogue was planned is Achilles entire attitude towards training Connor in 3. Its obvious that he was betrayed by an assassin but he never says who, and I don't think he would ever want to. So there are definitely some plot holes here but I think the whole idea for rogue was around for quite awhile. Just a poor implementation with Haythams story. But to go down the rabbit hole a bit more, even if haytham wasn't involved at all, and rogue never happened, he still would have mentioned all the assassins being killed off before Connors story. Or atleast you would think, so maybe a plot hole in Haythams story itself?

With the first point about the first native American assassin. It makes sense the templars and assassin's believe connor to be the first assassin as AC: Rogue's present day story takes place after AC3's so they wouldn't have known about the actual first assassin. Then there's that old woman from AC3 who didn't know much about them so it's still a plot hole it's just not a very big one

With regards to Kesegowasee - maybe he wasn't a proper assassin and was instead an agent or liason with the native peoples on the brotherhood's behalf because they needed to fill their ranks to survive and gain a proper foothold in the New World, like Hope with the New York gangs - neither of them wore proper robes with a white hood, did they? Even Duncan Walpole had the distinctive mark with his uniform. With regards to Forsaken - the people below are right, Shay asked not to be included in *any* way and Haytham obliged, simple as. And also, the assassin's said "no one will remember you" to him, so they could have destroyed all the records of him - maybe they did that for *all* the turncoats or failures? Who knows? If Rogue was longer and *properly* fleshed out then it could have been seriously amazing

To be fair, I can understand why a development studio might choose to make a game more canon than a previous supplementary book. Not to say the additional content we get beyond the games isn't awesome (it quite often is), but that stuff is going to take a backseat when the people making the main stuff prioritize their own work.

Supporting Brian Ford. @sunsetagain on tumblr made a comic (which you can find here: sunsetagain.tumblr.com/post/99908277765/) depicting and theorising the reasons behind Shay's lack of involvement in Haytham's journal. It actually makes quite a bit of sense and is a very well thought theory. Furthermore, one also has to remember that Haytham does not write everything from point A to point B in AC: Forsaken; the majority of the French and Indian War is not at all covered. Officially speaking, on the Empire's side, the War spanned from 1756 to 1763 and therefore often simply referred to as the Seven Year's War, although the 4th Intercolonial War started in 1754 when twenty-two-years-old George Washington fired ambushed a French patrol. The book only covers that first year of the War, right up until the Braddock Expedition on July 9th, 1755, and even from Haytham's perspective, we are given no indication on, how the Colonial Assassins were wiped out as stated by Achilles in ACIII after he and his sister kills Reginald. So really, something tells me that they did intentionally leave out the war in order to promote a game of this historic event later on.

You can just consider Haythem as some sort of megalomaniac - and let's face it, he kind of did. Why didn't he write about Shey in his story? Because it wasn't his story! And while it was quite a big event, it wasn't the vent that he was the star. And that was quite common especially in private historical commentary, I bet Caesar did write a lot of thing about the achievement of his centurions (there were only two that I can think of) even less so about the Gaul in De Bello Gallico.

I’ve heard some people saying Shay purposely told Haytham to keep him out of the journal because he wants to remain hidden or something. Pretty sure there’s a comic about it. The only thing i wish they have done in this game is make killing adewale (a freaking master assassin) harder to kill than hope who freakin poisons you. Maybe not stretch his mission out where you are fighting on 2 different islands and put them in a more densely populated area where its harder to use stealth. They don't cover any of Haytham's activity during the 7 years war. As a journal doesn't that sound like a big span of time to skip? The meta plot of rogue was that the Templars at Abstergo were revealing shays life to the assassins. This is resolved if you look at the book as a journal that was edited by the assassins. Shays story is a black mark on the history of the assassins. It would have been a personal slight to Connor. Shay was the son Haytham deserved. Connor was a whinnying brat and probably destroyed those pages personally because he was having an emo moment.
@eruditootidure2611
@eruditootidure2611 7 лет назад
On Kesegowase, my assumption would be that documentation of him was either destroyed or simply didn't exist; since the Modern Day of Rogue was the first analysis of Shay's life, there was no way for Shaun to know of his existence. Connor was the first DOCUMENTED native american assassin, though not the first, so Shaun was correct, as far as anyone knew. As for Forsaken... Honestly, that book is kind of dubiously canon. The novels always stray from the canon (like, the Ezio adaptations remove all mention of Desmond), so it's not unreasonable to think that Haytham DID write about Shay, but that that storyline simply wasn't included in the novel (because, of course, it hadn't existed when Forsaken was written). That being said, I prefer to think that someone ripped out a bunch of pages. Maybe Shay himself, who knows.
@thomasathey3012

@eruditootidure2611 7 лет назад
+Thomas Athey Like I said, dubiously. The many inaccuracies, such as those you mentioned, as well as the removal of any reference to Desmond, call into question their accuracy in general. So my point still stands: "it's not unreasonable to think that Haytham DID write about Shay, but that that storyline simply wasn't included in the novel"

@thomasathey3012 7 лет назад
Erudito otidurE they only didn't mention Desmond as it doesn't include the modern day though
@eruditootidure2611
@eruditootidure2611 7 лет назад
+Thomas Athey the reasoning doesn't matter, the point is that the books don't completely stick to the canon. Forsaken not mentioning Shay isn't a plot hole any more than Desmond not being mentioned in the novels is. The games supercede the novels.
@thomasathey3012
@thomasathey3012 7 лет назад
Erudito otidurE but the books are about the ancestors life not the game in words, that's why black flag explores before and after the game, so not mentioning Desmond except the first civ isn't not sticking to canon

Just because a story fills a gap in a timeline even though nobody asked for it doesn't mean it's a plot hole. Haytham didn't need to write about Shay's purge, Shay's purge was the reason the Assassins at the start of 3 were a couple of burned out old cripples. I mean, why put your more sensitive and work-related secrets in a personal journal? An Assassin could just take the book from Haytham after killing him. Which is, in fact, exactly what happened.

Every multimedia franchise has one medium that is what they are known for and that medium is the true canon. For Assassin's Creed, the games are what most people experience from the franchise, so they are the true canon. Everything else, books, comics, movies, etc., should be considered soft canon, and should be considered canon until they do not line up with the main part of the franchise.

Buddy. When doing historic research, not everything is gonna be recorded clear as day. There is always going to be portions that are missing when lacing the whole segment of what happened back together when evaluation time comes. AC Rogue is that example. To be jittered and diced up speaks for itself. There is always something new uncovered when digging deep into the bawls of time.

Talking about throwing in characters, you could say the same thing about Arthur Morgan in RD2. Lol. Rockstar never planned to do the prequel when they made RD which is why Arthur who turned out to be such a major character in the lives of the Marsden family is never mentioned. Personally I think John should have just had a cameo part in that game and Arthur should have been more tied to Sadie and Charles’s lives than John’s. This is why I dislike prequels.
