Assassin's Creed Mirage is one of the most honest games the series has seen in years. It didn't promise the world, but nothing it promised is missing. It's not an evolution, it's not a revolution, it's something you already love and have been starving for, for years.
It doesn't push the universe forward, and it doesn't damage it either. It's one of the faster, smoother stealth games in the entire franchise, and its focused scale means it's the perfect game to pierce into and devour if you've three or four days free to do some gaming.

Legitimately, this. With this one game, they proved to me they have what it takes to make something properly fun, that rewards experimentation, contains subtle hidden depth, and maybe most importantly _just works_ at a comfortable level of polish. At one point during that 100% playthrough I mumbled to myself, "I'll play whatever Bordeaux makes next."

@Julius-Ver
@Julius-Ver 8 месяцев назад
@@oktusprime3637 Why does Ubisoft have to shake things up within the franchise? If you don't like how Assassin's Creed games work and play, then play something else, haha. Not every game/franchise should play the same way as your favorite game/franchise plays. The whole reason we have different types of games is because not everyone likes the same type of games. The way I see it; Assassin's Creed was its own thing, different from other games, and it was for that reason that it blew up. If you then turn the Assassin's Creed franchise into every other RPG franchise, you are completely killing the Assassin community's preferred game style, while only giving the RPG community 1 more franchise to choose from, because they already have countless RPG franchises to play. The RPG community is far bigger than the Assassin community, but that doesn't mean that all games should be for that larger audience. That's like one political party getting 51% of the votes, and then getting 100% of the power. Oh wait...

I hope so too. What I want is to see this same exact team pursue another game just like this but with more time and resources to continue refining and evolving things they're already doing well. This game is hit or miss for some players, mostly due to its constraints, but I'm confident that if Bordeaux could do _anything_ they wanted, they'd probably make one of the best games in the series. @lethalevasion
@lethalevasion 8 месяцев назад
Seeing the movement clips @ 4:28 reminded me of what I originally started doing parkour for. My original intent when first getting into it was proving that Origins parkour, while not nearly as in depth as old AC movement, still had potential that was limited by the map design. I practically forced the game to do things it obviously didn't want to. Here in Mirage however, it looks like those mechanics are actually somewhat encouraged, or at least the restrictions on them have been reduced significantly. Side ejecting doesn't exist like it used to (obviously) but it did exist to an extent in Origins and the game would behave strangely once you forced a proper one to happen (the most common issue was your character would jump to the side but the model would be facing the wrong direction xD) while here it looks much more consistent alongside the map design being much better. I had forgotten what my original goal was; to show the RPG parkour in a better light, and had ultimately given up on it in favor of AC3 and older AC's. Now I feel a bit reinvigorated to get Mirage and return to the "rpg" system and try my best to showcase it in the best possible way.
@LeoKRogue
@LeoKRogue 8 месяцев назад
I think if you're the kind of player who was doing their best to make _Origins_ movement look cool, this game _should_ treat you a lot better than that and give you lots more opportunities to do some of those cool things.
@user-kun2147

This is by far the best Mirage review I've seen. It's very easy to understand, you also bring up good points, and I like the optimism that you show towards the game. Other people are busy being frustrated and mad on how the movement feels magnetic or clunky at times, I'm just happy that we are finally getting an ASSASSIN'S creed game rather than being a 100+ hour RPG with 50-100+ levels for your character
@LeoKRogue
@LeoKRogue 8 месяцев назад
Thank you so much, that's a lot of praise. I empathize with players who find movement frustrating, I do too a lot of the time, not sure how well that came across. With that said, the sheer speed and fluidity I can carve through guard-layouts with, using all my tools to maintain speed if I'm confident, feels really good and I never got tired of the feel of getting behind stuff, rolling through restricted areas, and shanking people from haystacks. The Assassin's Creed vibes are definitely here, sometimes to very atmospheric highs. The story wasn't my favorite, but it had moments I enjoyed.

@slygunslinger
@slygunslinger 8 месяцев назад
You know, at the start, when you mentioned, "Is this game anything like AC 1-Revelations?" Nah, it wasn't, and it never meant to be". But that's exactly how it was pitched - a throwback to the classics, not like Valhalla, Odyssey, or Origins. This really highlights a big issue with gaming standards. Why should a game in the PS5 era struggle to match the heights of the original classics from the PS3 era? Why is it so widely accepted that revisiting that original style, with the bold aim to surpass the originals while seamlessly blending in modern upgrades for a more immersive PS5 experience, feels near impossible? Unless we challenge and shift our expectations, Mirage is just gonna stay stuck in mediocrity, a faint echo of its former glory that relies on our nostalgia for a better time. If we're cool with that, then that's all we're gonna get. You're spot on in saying this feels the most Assassin's Creed since Unity. But let's be real, it's Valhalla with fewer bells and whistles, trying to wear AC 1's shoes. If we settle for this, it's what we'll keep getting.
@LeoKRogue
@LeoKRogue 8 месяцев назад
Mm. Funny enough, games in whatever our modern era is _have_ struggled to match PS3 era standards for a decade or more, man. It's our reality. Assassin's Creed is not unique in this regard, I don't really know what else I can say about that. "It's just the way it is," may suck to hear, but is it not just true in this industry? Anyway. Regarding Mirage, the way I always understood it from minute one, was that it was pitched as an homage to those games, without being a carbon-copy of them. I had been telling people from that first moment not to tunnel-vision on unreasonable expectations, and some people didn't listen and they're _really_ hurt by that right now. I know this because it happened to me, so many times with this franchise. Would I have loved a carbon-copy more? Hell yeah, dude, I mean... I am who I am, it's pretty obvious which games are my favorite by now. But in terms of their stated goal, I'd endeavor to say it achieves that throughout most of its design and atmosphere, and the expectations they set for me were well-set, in my regard. If it doesn't work for you, I respect that, I would've enjoyed it more had it bolstered some of its weaker elements. The way I see this game's impact or legacy if you will, is not a matter of "settling." Representing it that way is a misreading of the situation, because Ubisoft have already said how Mirage, or Red, or Hexe individually do, are no longer what dictates the singular definitive direction the _entire_ series is taking -- because there _is no_ singular, definitive direction anymore. They're creating different types or formats of Assassin's Creed, which each aim at different players. Mirage is the first of these for 'classic' fans, not the last. Red is the next for RPG fans, and also not their last. It's a decent starting point and over the time ahead, I'll definitely do my part to highlight what needs to be better with the next game in this format. This was never intended to be a "main" game, or define the franchise's direction, or anything of that nature. This and Red (which targets the 'other side') are stopgap games between Valhalla and the next "era" of Assassin's Creed, which presumably starts with Hexe. www.ign.com/articles/ubisoft-wants-to-make-more-focused-games-rather-than-have-one-game-do-everything
@slygunslinger
@slygunslinger 8 месяцев назад
I understand where you're coming from. I might be seen as the one holding onto hope, while you're taking a more realistic stance. However, I can't shake the feeling that this viewpoint is potentially more detrimental than being critical and pessimistic. It suggests we're settling for mediocrity, even though we recognize that the gaming industry isn't reaching its full potential today. It's like we're in denial, trying to convince ourselves that something is enjoyable when, in reality, it falls short. By the way, please don't interpret my comment as directed towards you in any way. I was mainly addressing Mirage and the gaming industry as a whole, haha. I thoroughly enjoyed your review, even though I have a slightly different take, especially since I'm nearing completion myself. It's hard not to feel like I fell for the nostalgia bait with this title. Nonetheless, I'm eagerly anticipating your next video Rogue. "The city has more chances that say yes to you for trying something clever. It doesn't always work. There will be moments where you'll wanna move in a way but the game just doesn't let you." So it IS like Unity after all?
@LeoKRogue
@LeoKRogue 8 месяцев назад
Hilariously, yeah, you could see it that way. What's really impressive and instructive about it here though, is that _nothing has changed_ from the movement paradigm Valhalla uses. Literally nothing, in terms of what Basim _can do,_ is any different, at all. So why does this game let me do cool things more often? It's solely because its world-design is so, so, so much better and more conducive to these small movement tricks. That's it. That by itself makes a noticeable difference. The times it still doesn't do anything are a symptom of this game still using the existing parkour input from ACV, but all the times it _does_ do something, it does it because the city is just denser, objects are closer together, and you can't grab every single wall so manual ejects are actually on the table in more situations.
@brucemustdie

I'm happy that side and back ejects are actually useful now. This feature is one of the key aspects of AC parkour, and I'm glad it's strong again

Yeah, but let's not get carried away, heh. They're useful _sometimes._ That's way better than them being useful _never._ But we're still a long way from the movement we want. ^_^

Thanks for the controller configs from earlier too!

Thank you, that's what I was hoping to do. I know this video is arguably _too long,_ but I did cut it down, I just wanted to give people the information. If they wanted a more "should you buy this or not" review for _general_ players, there's plenty of twenty minute videos elsewhere. This is specifically for Assassin's Creed players who have these kind of questions.

This is exactly the type of video I wanted, you even covered the matter of back- and side-ejects, I’ve been wondering about that one. To echo some sentiments here, I hope Bordeaux gets to make more ACs and Ubi does in fact produce projects that’ll appeal to different parts of the fan base rather than trying to impress everyone.

I’ve heard they’re expanding the team, right? And moving to a bigger office. Looking at other reviews, the discourse is indeed that this is “just” AC and doesn’t “innovate enough”. I’m not so down on this novelty chasing and begrudging efforts to try and refine something. I’ve just got the game, and the design so far feels very _focused_, in that respect, it very much reminds me of AC1.

Something I think we can all agree on but wasnt mentioned was the soundtrack across the board on this game absolutely phenomenal and honestly the best soundtrack in the series imo. Almost every track that is played throughout the game, even the pause and menu screen, all just fits the aesthetic of the atmosphere making it really feel like you're in 9th century Bagdad. The sound team of the AC games rarely miss but they really dug into this game so I just needed to give my appreciation to them aswell.
@LeoKRogue
@LeoKRogue 8 месяцев назад
The soundtrack is amazing. It truly grasps the Assassin's Creed vibe, just right. Pulls you into the historical layer, but it also properly understands the second half of any genuinely great AC OST, and that's the electronics, the unsettling futuristic, pseudo-cyberpunk vibe of Present Day, so haunting distortion and digital instrumentation is present too.
@dwaynecooper5502
@dwaynecooper5502 8 месяцев назад
@LeoKRogue So true, and it's done perfectly. The sounds blend so well when you'd expect such a vast difference in tone and melodies from different time periods to throw one another off. But that's what they were going for when making it, and they managed to make it sound as it they belong with one another. That is unreal talent, which is why I had to point it out because I feel things like this tend to go truly unappreciated when we're just gamin and taking it at face value. The AC sound team is the pinnacle of audio production and they prove it on almost every release.

Another notion for Button remapping: Put Assassination on a different button than combat attack. The Assassinate prompt shows up late quite often. Blew my cover a couple of times in the first hours because I just did a combat attack, as the game didn't prompt Assassinate yet. I personally put it on L3 (had eagle vision on that before), together with "readjust camera", as that wouldn't do any harm in a stealth situation.

Just finished watching the whole thing. I really love watching you. Theres something about your personality that makes me feel comfortable and homely when watching you. Specially loved your AC Unity story playthrough. Hope you do the same style of playthrough with mirage. A little bit about myself is that I've loved this series for 8 longs years without ever getting to play it myself due to my family never owning a PC nor WiFi.I grew up watching the RU-vidrs play the game on 360p to save mobile data. Assassin's Creed always fascinated me. Being from a very small town in a very small third world country, I never got to learn about foreign culture or ancient history and civilization from school. The books are mostly filled with good things about the current tyrannical ruler. AC really showed me the history. History was our playground, hanging out with Leonardo DaVinci??? Cmon!! Beautiful architectures from different time periods, remaking of historical landmarks and cities long gone... Then parkour!! The movement!! The philosophy that we shouldn't stop learning how to move through this world just when after learning how to walk on our two feets but to find the most coolest, badassest way possible, defying gravity. Genetic engineering allowing you to relive history! Amazing soundtracks! Characters like Ezio! Edward Kenway! The only game I've ever been obsessed with and you,Leo K the best AC RU-vidr. Well now I just spent all of my savings for going to college and bought a laptop instead (to hopefully also make a living out of it,in a strange time of my life) So yeah!!! ABOUT TO ACTUALLY PLAYYY ASSASSIN'S CREED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE AFTER 8 LONG YEARS OF LOVING IT!!! SO STOCKED but theres also some wounds by loving Well that was one hell of a rant, knowing you, you also love to rant. Hope you read this. Hope you have an amazing life ahead. Always loved your company, wish you talked about others things in life too like how to actually live and how to be an adult, wish you were there for me to explain everything about life. Thanks so much for the support, I hope you're able to enjoy your first hands-on experiences with the Assassin's Creed series. Keep an open mind, they might be a little different to play than you're expecting, but do your best to have fun with it. And about everything else in your life, I know you're gonna do great. I'm not always that wise, not always so amazing at teaching people how to live -- I have a lot I still need to learn, as well. But if I ever have moments when I can think of something good to say, I'll try. Safety and peace, Tamzid.

been around since AC1 & i really thought the lack of intentional side/back ejects would be my make or break point. Surprised to say that, while lacking, all the other surrounding facets of the game are SO STRONG that i can’t help but love this game. If it had the parkour system that i wanted (Ac1 or Ezio trilogy or Unity) this would perhaps be a top 5 game in the franchise for me. Still early, only killed 1st assassination targets & just leveling up on some contracts right now. But if the story can hold up this will easily be my fav entry in years!

Animation randomness definitely sucks, but I feel like we've had practice as a community in playing around it. I still wish we had a _little_ more control over it as creators, my Animation-Deck idea I still maintain is one of the coolest concepts I've ever hoped for, but alas, who knows when we ever (if we even do) see that. When you get it, I hope you enjoy it. I think you specifically are going to like it a lot, so definitely sink into the experience and let yourself have a good time. Make some Manual Saves of your favorite moments and write down in a little list what each one is, then go back to them later.

The moment I fell in love with this game was the first time I saw the Damascus Gate. One of only four gates into the Round City, closely watched by the Caliph's men for any trespassers. One does not simply walk into the district of Baghdad's upper class. You can try to climb in above the eyes of the guards, use tools to distract and sneak around them, bribe some townspeople to help you enter, or fight your way inside. Either way, you're not getting in for free and it won't be easy. These gates are my favorite locations in Mirage. Such an immersive way to block the endgame district from a new player, while also encouraging the brave ones to challenge themselves. I love the walls and checkpoints that you need to pass through to get to a different district. In most AC games you can just avoid the restricted areas when freeroaming, but in this one stealth is organically part of navigating the world.
@LeoKRogue
@LeoKRogue 8 месяцев назад
That's something I also _really_ love, I didn't have a good place to mention it but it's something that makes just being in Baghdad a little more immersive and intentional. Having these places that are actually harder (but not impossible) to breach helps the city feel a bit more like a city, for sure.

I appreciate you taking the time to hang out and hear me out. I do believe that, judging by Ubi's new publishing strategy of "different games for different groups of players," we should anticipate seeing more of Bordeaux and more of this kind of 'classic' Assassin's Creed experience in due time. Not sure when though, it probably won't be for another three years or so. But, we can have hope we'll get these tighter, more focused games again which is amazing. www.ign.com/articles/ubisoft-wants-to-make-more-focused-games-rather-than-have-one-game-do-everything

Unfortunately, i'm one of those people that finds Mirage just isn't good enough. I'm faaar too tired to be pulled back in only to be burnt alive again either by the series, Ubisoft, and/or the RPG-fanbase, so much so that the *only* way to win me over is to be selfish about it and say "it must check-listed every single thing i wanted in a package". Otherwise, i'm happy i've moved on. HOWEVER, i sincerely hope lots of people buy it in my place so it sold really well. Because from how the devs speak of it, it's beginning more and more to sound like this is the only time they'll get to do classic AC ever again. Which from the way the series are looking by the upcoming projects, looks like it is.
@LeoKRogue

Thank you for this video, I really like the points you covered and you were really reasonable, you adressed the bad points that could be improved and covered greatly all this game has to offer. I played the early assasin's creed and really liked them (especially the 2). I took a big pause and later in life wanted to feel that experience again with today's quality of games, so I decided to buy Origins. And I was totally dissapointed to what it had become, it almost wasn't assasin's creed anymore. I didn't even complete the game because of how boring it was, I didn't sign up for that. Now that I played this game I can really feel more of a more classic assasin's creed than the 3 previous ones who, let's be frank, are just rpg games with the AC etiquette. I like the direction they're taking, hopefully the next ones will take the same direction.

Thank you for listening to my video, I appreciate it a lot, from one classic fan to another. I can definitely relate to that feeling of playing Mirage and just thinking, yeah, I've been missing this, it's not perfect but I'm happy I at least get to play something like this one more time. www.ign.com/articles/ubisoft-wants-to-make-more-focused-games-rather-than-have-one-game-do-everything In terms of them changing direction, the answer is yes, but it's in a very specific way. This interview says that Ubisoft are no longer making a single Assassin's Creed game try to appeal to every type of player. So instead of one game defining the direction of the entire brand, we're getting different "lines" of games for different players. Classic fans will get games like Mirage, and it won't be the last. RPG fans are getting Red, which is probably the next game releasing after Mirage. Whatever Hexe is, it's something brand new and unique, but the point is that even if we don't see this "format" of game for two or three years, we _will_ get more of this because that's the company's new publishing strategy.

Great review, pretty much exactly what I wanted to hear with the expectations I had of the game. Basim in Valhalla is genuinely my favorite Assassin in the franchise, so I'm hoping I can connect to this younger version as well. I THINK I will, since some of my favorite Basim lines in Valhalla were dialogue from the Cent arc when he talked about his youth and how much he sought out knowledge and wisdom. Also really glad to see that despite the simplicity of the parkour, it's more possible to have fun with it in Baghdad. The game just being designed around the fantasy of being an Assassin is just such a refreshing thing after so long.

Your level of quality, consistency over a long period of time, your generosity with your audience, all things I really admire. This probably isn’t your first officially-sanctioned review (I have to admit I haven’t followed closely enough so I’m not sure), but being a professional on that level and gaining that kind of recognition is also an amazing achievement. And the sheer effort of editing an hour long video like this. You should be incredibly proud. As for me playing this game, I… have no idea! The last AC I played more than an hour of was dabbling in the early stages of Origins. I touched Odyssey briefly during the Google Stadia alpha test (lol). One thing you noted that would push me to give it a try would be adding the ability to replay missions. I hope they patch that in at some point, it would be great for those who want to really push the game’s mechanics, just as you said.

I wish the hidden blade kill animations were a bit quicker, it looks like it takes sometimes up to 4- 5 seconds for the animation to end so you can start moving again... from how Basim sneaks up on the enemy, goes for the stab and then holds a standing pose for a while before he crouches down again and lets you control him.
@LeoKRogue
@LeoKRogue 8 месяцев назад
The H.Blade animations you get are largely random, unfortunately, which is something I've never liked. Some of them are _very_ fast, and some of them are pretty slow. When I play, I tend to get a mix of fast and slow ones.

This is how everyone should make their reviews. Such a fine work, thanks a lot man. Almost 99% of reviews out there are made from emotion and that is not reliable.
@LeoKRogue

Well, this is also made from emotion, I'm not much more objective than others, I'm just taking more time to give context to everything.

Really well-thought review! I really like the fact that we can customize the controller layout to better match the older games now. As you pointed out, having sprint as hold, and on RT, really does improve the experience quite a lot.

So for those confused as to how the parkour works, AC used an animation canceling system up until AC Rogue, although it was quite stripped down in AC3, AC4, and AC Rogue compared to AC1-AC Revelations. The animation canceling system allows you to cancel an action mid-animation with another input during its active frames (such as when you're at the peak when running up a flat wall). It's why you can do things like manual side jumps easily in AC1-AC Revelations. For AC Unity and beyond, the parkour system functions on an animation priority system. The key to knowing how parkour works in AC Mirage is knowing the priority system of the animation for parkours. Consistently pulling off side-ejects in Mirage means knowing what allows side ejects in the first and place and setting yourself in the correct position on the fly to allow it to happen. And yes, it is as limiting as it sounds. You're essentially at the mercy of the animation priority system, but knowing what the priority system entails can get you quite far in Mirage. AC Unity's system had a problem of trying to do WAY too many things at once, and would have benefitted from being mixed together with the old system's animation cancels. One of the biggest problems with Unity's system was also that there were SO MANY animations that the animation priority system often confuses itself on what you want to do. How the parkour system worked in AC1-ACR is actually almost like how a fighting game combo works. Certain actions allow you to cancel into different inputs, and the animation it cancels into will depend on your input and the result. For example, in Street Fighter, Ryu will always be able to cancel the animation of his heavy punch attack into a Hadouken fireball attack during its active frames as it hits an opponent. The same principles apply in older ACs, where if Ezio does a run up the wall, he will always be able to cancel the animation of his wall run into a side or back jump during its active frames. Additionally, if Ryu gets interrupted while doing his Hadouken fireball, his attack animation will cancel into an animation of him getting hurt. If not, then he will enter his recovery frames (the transition back to his idle stance). The same applies in older AC games, where if you do a back jump to empty air, the jump animation will continue and you will land to the ground (this is the recovery frames). But if you do a back jump and there's a ledge behind you, the jump animation will be canceled into the animation for grabbing ledges (the recovery frame is canceled altogether). In short, it's a very responsive and CONSISTENT system, even if it doesn't look natural all the time. It is intuitive to control though. AC Unity until up to AC Mirage largely ditches that in favor of an animation priority system that prioritizes smoothness and spectacle, which is closer to games like Uncharted. Unlike Uncharted however, AC is an open world game, not a linear platformer/action game where most of the player's interactions with the game world can be tailored and anticipated by the devs. As a result, the system can become overburdened and confuses itself on what it has to prioritize based on your inputs and positioning, which is why it feels like you're fighting the game half of the time in AC Unity.

_Fantastic_ comment, screenshotting and saving this one because it's one of the best explanations for why I and so many others so deeply value and cherish the AC1-Rev movement system the way we do.

Thanks for recommending binding right trigger to sprint. I simply swapped tool selection with sprint and the game feels so much better. I also really recommend people turning off the compass and use Enkidu for navigating. The only real down side is you can’t see the wanted posters but I actually like it because you basically have to find them yourself using eagle vision while trying not to draw guards attention.

@LeoKRogue 8 месяцев назад
Nice! Yeah, the game honestly has a number of interesting visual 'helpers' in the world that assist with finding stuff. Shops have those long colored vertical banners with their symbol on them. Posters are sometimes surrounded by two or three NPCs staring at one, and of course you can find them in EV.

Such a great review. You talked about everything i wanted to know more about, and now I'm actually excited to play this game! I hope the team actually sees this so they see that we appreciate what they've done right and realize what needs more improvement. Overall, I'm actually genuinely happy with what we got, it's not perfect (and it was never gonna be), but the devs made so many of the right choices and i can really appreciate that. I hope ubisoft gives ubi bordeaux more recourses for their next game, because they really did a good job with this. Also, looking forward to that sweet mirage stream!
@LeoKRogue
@LeoKRogue 8 месяцев назад
Definitely want to see what Bordeaux might do next, yeah. I think they have what it takes to pull together and make something they actually like, totally unexpected little team that came out of the shadows to give me a game I had a lot of fun with. Keeping an eye on them for sure. Montreal and Quebec will deliver big hitters like Hexe and Red but the tight scale of what Bordeaux did here makes them immediately really special in my eyes.

my collectors edition just came in the mail today and after i got to Alamut i immediately got so happy simply from seeing so many brother and sister hidden ones/assassins, this is the first time since ac 1 where ive felt like the brotherhood is alive and even that little part of the game made me finally really feel like an assassin in a way no game has made me feel in a long time. As always great video Leo, ive been watching this in the background while i played and now im gonna go watch your twitch vod of u playing it to hear ur perspective on things some more lol. looking forward to those tool mod build videos!
