Assassin's Creed Rogue was an odd release, launching on the same day as Assassin's Creed Unity it seems overlooked, and yet people who remember it seem to do so fondly. Join me, as a decade down the line we explore this game's positives and negatives.
(Also, I know it hasn't been bang on 10 years as of yet, as the game released in November 2014, however I know for a fact I'll be too caught up in other projects down the line so I wanted to make this video while I was twiddling my thumbs)

"He just assassinates assassins who act like templars". Man, thank you! This is my biggest problem with Rouge's story. The story to me doesn't make me feel like "Seeing things from a different perspective" because of this. Gameplay wise, it's well done. But storywise, I had high expectation on seeing the Templars pursuing their justice in their own unique and opposite way but honestly I was a little disappointed. Both sides just switched names and acted the same way.

I know the Assassins in this game are using the Templars M.O and the Templars assassin's M.O. Ubisoft didn't take time and work how to play the opposite side of the conflict. We don't really see the Templars view, we see them being similar to the Assassins.
@flamingmonkey7712

@@sayonarababy335 Not really. Living in China, I see a lot of problems in my country compared to what I've heard from my friends who live in the west. Then again, men and women here still live much happier and safer than people in certain parts of the middle east and Africa. Different governments with different political ideas and principles do things differently and they have their own unique good and bad sides. Some are better, some are worse.

I have a soft spot for Rogue. When Unity was overshadowing it, I constantly went up to bat for it, and I enjoyed it 10 years ago when it came out. Black Flag but with snow instead of tropics was a fun change. When I replayed the PS4 remaster, the cracks did show much more prominently. The story is kind of short and bad. The Assassins in this title are probably the least likable we've seen. A few characters feel like cartoons. The map is needlessly big (which feels really WEIRD to say post-Origins, but there are so many places in the River Valley the story never takes you to.) And I know it's extremely petty but I hate how Shay's main outfit on the game cover has a black hood but it never does in the game. You have to wear the Dark Assassin outfit to get anything close to that. The Lisbon mission, though. LOVE that setpiece. One of my favorites in the series.
@Fizhy
@Fizhy 12 дней назад
I think Shay’s Templar robes having a hood was always intended as symbolism more than because he’d actually have that in the game
@brainybunny13
@brainybunny13 6 дней назад
I believe that the E3 trailer and the high Def pictures of Shay with his hooded Templar outfit take place between ages 28 and 45. There is a huge gap of time between the mission when Shay saves Achilles from Haytham and the mission where he assassinates Charles Dorian. At least that's my head cannon. I love Shay he is the best character in the whole franchise. ❤

Even the Templars aren’t all evil beings you just kill. Haytham is an example of a good Templar. So was Julius Caesar. If he’s ever a member of the ancient cabal that isn’t called Templar just yet. But SPQR are spiritually the predecessor group name of the Templars of that time

I cannot agree more about this game’s setting. I love exploring the frozen wastes of the North Atlantic more than the Caribbean, it’s just such a different vibe to Black Flag that feels isolating and alone, which matches Shay’s feelings of isolation after leaving the only life he’d ever known. Even the River Valley just has a level of comforting beauty to it that’s different to what you find in Black Flag. Even New York adds to this dimension with a constant state of fear and unease as you never know where an assassin is hiding, because Shay is no longer an assassin, meaning you are no longer comfortable in a place he once hid with ease either. The sights, views and locations in that game were gorgeous and breathtaking in their scale in Black Flag but Rogue aims for places that are a lot simpler but meaningful in a different way, I think it’s a very appropriate setting for Shay as a character.

@johnmarstondancing3745
@johnmarstondancing3745 12 дней назад
I think saying Mirage is half assed is definitely wrong, half baked would be a better way to phrase it because that game is clearly made by perhaps the most passionate developers the series has had since origins, they were just stuck with an engine which didn’t want to play along
@MrHazz111
@MrHazz111 12 дней назад
Half assed by Ubisoft as a company. I'm sure Rogue also had passionate people working on the game. Game development is incredibly difficult and AC Rogue as a game came together well enough that the team worked hard on it, same with Mirage. That the higher ups at Ubisoft decided to launch Rogue in the same year as unity or give Ubi Bordeaux no resources apart from Valhalla's bones still obviously reflects poorly on the end product. We care about the behind the scenes because we are hardcore fans. Most customers aren't obliged to care about this stuff. They pay money and want to get something that can compete with other games out there.

I always considered the "Assassin" gang to be the writers' way of excusing the crimes the Assassins commit in Rogue's story, but honestly it kinda holds up when you think about it. In AC2-Revelations the Assassins aren't teaming up with moral beacons. They ally with thieves, escorts, and mercenaries that'll do almost anything for the right paycheck. They cover that fact up nicely with charismatic faces leading those factions, and with excuses like "well we totally only steal from the corrupt, we swear!" Rogue is a proper mask off moment. It shows how the Assassins have always allied themselves with morally-dubious factions, and lets players see that from the perspective of an outsider. Another thing many people miss is Monroe and the others subtly manipulating Shay. They frequently mislead him and feed him questionable intel. The most blatant of these is when Monro tells Shay that the poison gas is to be used on civilians. Shay actually catches this, asking "I thought they were just going to use it on the military..." Monro has no response to this beyond a glance at Shay, which leads to a slightly-funny moment of Shay remembering who Monro is and apologizing by saying "Which would also be bad." But those that don't look twice won't realize that Monro just lied to Shay, had no evidence to back up his claim, and never got properly called on it. There are other examples of this as well, but this one is by far the most obvious imo. Shows that these are still the same Templars we know, and only circumstance has them in the moral high ground. Similar to when Connor worked with Haytham to hunt down Benjamin Church. But the enemy of an enemy never stays a friend for long...

Assassin's Creed Rogue is my favorite in the franchise because it offers a unique Templar perspective, features compelling character development with Shay, and combines refined naval and land gameplay. The rich historical setting during the Seven Years' War, morally grey choices, and atmospheric experience with stunning visuals (for its time) and soundtrack make it stand out. Plus, it serves as a crucial bridge between AC3 and Black Flag, enhancing the series' continuity. In my humble opinion.

I’ve always had this real love for rogue. It took me a year to get the Xbox one because I was poor asf at the time so I spent soooo many hours in rogue. More than that it fed us what a lot of us were asking for a Templar perspective. But after playing the game more I realized he really isn’t a Templar. He never actually betrayed the creed. The colonial brotherhood betrayed him. Spit on the face of their own tenants.

During that final cutscene with Achilles on the the ground fighting Haytham, I managed to make the character models ragdoll by activating no reload and infinite ammo. Then spammed grenades at them and ran to them initiating the cutscene before they landed. You see Haytham's weapons do all the work. Also it's hilarious when you kill Charles Dorian with random weapons. Stuff like fists, swords or muskets, making sure tp use high profile when doing so.

@brainybunny13
@brainybunny13 5 дней назад
Yeah, that was Steven Piovesan. He is the voice and motion capture of Shay. I think that it is pretty shitty of Ubisoft to not help with the advertising. It kind of makes sense since AC Rogue was a last-minute decision from Ubisoft. So, from the very beginning, AC Rogue was being treated like the neglected child in favor of AC Unity. Despite the shortcomings and flaws that Rogue has, it is one of the most enjoyable games in the franchise IMHO.

One of the beauties about Assassin's Creed for me was the historical fantasy like actually being the cause for so many events such as deaths of certain targets, starting off many important events. It adds more weight that you affected powerful figures and their lives. After Unity though it started to be more reactionary, like your character was just a servant being thrown around by historical figures more than actually affecting the history around it.

Rogue’s story would have been far better served if the Assassins weren’t connected with the generic enemies at all, and they were just random gangs. What this would do is point to the state of chaos and anarchy that the colonies are in after Shay removes key figures in the British/Templar elite from power, and gives him a reason to doubt the Assassin ideology. Instead of being free to pursue harmony and reason, all that’s happened is that petty bandits are using force to abuse and dominate everyone around them, mostly innocents like the Finnegans. The people are no more free than they were before, arguably even worse off because there’s nothing holding these gangs back. Shay taking them out and putting the redcoats back in control isn’t just him atoning for his sins, but committing to an ideology, that states there needs to be tight controls or else everything falls into chaos. And that’s what you needed more of throughout the game. You need reasons for Shay to abandon his old ideas and become convinced that the methods Templars have used since AC1 are in fact just and necessary. Shay needs to be a character who would kill people speaking out against the government since those ideas are dangerous, Shay needs to be someone who would kill a few to save many, Shay needs to be someone who helps manipulate the hierarchies and institutions of power to manipulate them for the benefit of the Templar Rite. That would have been an interesting and complex character arc for him to go on. Not just someone who abandons the Assassins when they’ve gone too far, but someone who wouldn’t even rejoin Ezio and Altair because he sees the world in a fundamentally different way now. But as it is, Shay is a competently voice acted and likeable enough character but too surface level to truly be the compelling and fascinating figure a game about an Assassin turned Templar deserved. Which is also why he should have been the antagonist of Unity. I’m nowhere near the first to say it but it would make SO much sense if Shay were the one behind the coup against De La Serre, because it would continue his arc of dedication to Templar ideology, show how much he’s grown since the end of Rogue and give closure to Arno as now he gets revenge on the man who killed his father, something he never even thought about in the events of Unity. It just seemed like such an obvious choice to make but they instead went with someone whose name I don’t even remember, as part of a very flawed and forgettable story. (Maybe Shay could even have died as part of a distraction so another Templar in the story could get away from Arno or get the sword first or something. That would really have brought everything full circle. 😂😂😂😂😂) Shay could have been one of the best AC characters, and I really do want to like him… but there’s just sadly nothing there in comparison to the potential this character had.
@ac_nerd9794
@ac_nerd9794 8 дней назад
I like the concept of Rogue and Shay. However, its terrible flip of the switch of who is good and who is bad instead of having more time to develop the need to stop the Colonial Brotherhood. Shay is essentially a hypocrite because he doesn't follow his own Creed and if he had, he would have had some form of impact against the Templars, but he just became a Templar mercenary/member.

I remember buying this on 360 the black friday a few weeks after it came out for $25. It was pretty fun but at the time I thought it was a bit short and didn't do enough to make you feel like a templar. It was just kind of a flip, assassins bad, templars good this time. They could have done more with the concept. I was also getting burned out on the Naval combat at the time after Black Flag and this. Thankfully they took a break from naval combat before introducing it a little in Origins and bringing it back for Odyssey when I was ready for it again. Also didn't help Rogue that at the time Unity was out and even with the bugs looked stunning.

I love Rogue but I have one problem with it. The story is so short that it makes the plot feel bad and forced. After basically growing up with Assassins, there needs to be only ONE situation where things go shit to suddenly make Shay join the Templars even though he was killing them before and knew exactly they're also bad and their actions aren't better at all compared to what Assassins do. I mean, he could've just leave this life of being in a certain brotherhood. Instead he just goes "Hmm, Templars bad, Assassins bad, Imma go with Templars now". On top of that he kills Liam and Hope even though he didn't really need to. He could easily just knock them out and go, instead he kills the people he held dear. The story just doesn't make sense to me and his parting ways with Assassins to join the Templars could've been done in a much better way.

As a die hard Rogue fan i couldnt agree more with you, my biggest gripe with the game to this day is that it's too short. They tried to fit too much in a game that could and should have been a main line game but was reduced to only being filler. Rogue has the shortest Story out of all AC games (not counting stuff like chronicles) if im correct. Also about the collectibles yeah they're just kinda there to artificially increase the games volume

It was good for what it was though and just like you said i really like how the world feels, colonial america is my fav setting to this day despite it not even being that interesting

Rogue is a strange game to me. On it's own, it's a pretty decent experience, yet i can't help but feel that releasing it alongside Unity hurt both games immensely. While we all know the state Unity released in, Rogue's story felt like some parts were either not finished or weren't expanded upon enough. Tho I must say, i still like the idea of defecting assassins and joining templars a more compelling than rehashing Romeo and Juliet again. I do think both games deserved much better than what they got. I don't know what Ubisoft was thinking, developing two big games like this concurrently, especially with Unity making 1:1 scale Paris.

We can definitely say the same thing for Origins, great game but too short and definitely needed a sequel. Unity aswell 👌🏻

To me rogue is very unique and it bridges ac 3 and unity, getting to play basically the whole game as a Templar from the viewpoint of a former assassin the series was begging for that side to be said at the time i think...rogue was almost necessary at some point.

Rogue is often what I would like to call "cookie dough" as it feels like a game they made due to leftover budget. That's why you see a lot of reused assets from both AC3 and Black Flag, why the modern day segment is literally the same game tester room that you were in from the previous game, and why Ubisoft didn't really market the game that much. When they wrapped up Black Flag, they realized they still had some money left and instead of putting it into more DLC, they put it into a side game. Black Flag was the cake, and Rogue is the cookie which came from the remaining batter.

From what ive read online fizhy in ac unity they all speak english because: “using the cinematic conceit of having historical British accents like you would in something like the movie Gladiator".

Partially related. But how different would've things been if Assassin's Creed unity took a couple months more of development to polish the story, mechanics and overall infrastructure

genuinely hate how the Templar outfit doesnt actually have a hood it looked so good on the box why did they change their minds
@brainybunny13
@brainybunny13 5 дней назад
My theory is that the E3 trailer and the advertisement pictures with the hooded Templar outfit took place within the gap of when Shay saves Achilles and when he assassinates Charles Dorian. If you look closely at the high rendered model of Shay, you can see that he looks older than 28 but younger than 45, and he has longer hair, too. So, theoretically, he made alterations to his outfit within his 30ies. At least that's my head cannon. 😊

Well in my opinion Rouge is a game that shows there are always two sides of a coin and that even a group of liberatours often have toxic people in their crowed and there is no simple good and bad side. Also the Assassins often Kill and justify Kills that arent really necessary but people celebreate their actions. Your explanation in this video is very good. I think i read somewhere that the open world ofAC Rouge actually was part of AC 3 but later was in general too big to fit on the disc. So probably they had a Rivervalley location already partly ready to go but it couldnt make it into the final game and thats when the story for Rouge was made.

I’ve never played this game but heard a lot of things about it and never liked the idea of playing as Shay, and killing Adéwalé, who was an important part of AC4
@KennethV45
@KennethV45 12 дней назад
Since Black Flag is apparently being remade, hopefully expanding some aspects such as the Aveline DLC as well as Adéwalé DLC, Rogue should be expanded upon in a remake. A Rogue remake could improve the Assassin segment of the story allowing for the player to have more of a connection to the Assassins and it being harder to kill these former friends. It would be better to flesh out the Assassins and Templars instead of the Assassins feeling like Templars and Templars feeling like Assassins. The easiest thing that the remake needs to improve is by actually including the hooded outfit on the cover of the game. The remaster should get an update with that outfit too.

4:50 I feel like the only real way to explain this is that it's a lot harder to find actors with decent french accents for an entire cast of a game than it is for a side character or two.

I always saw this game as the more notable incarnation of Ubisoft as what will become years later: Wasted potential, corporative victim. The templar side of the story was always a pretty interesting story to tell, and a plot of betrayal was a bold twist for the already saturated motivation of vengeance (That will become the norm in this franchise from there), the writting was all over the place but it has some meaning and actually was getting to something in various moments, and Shay's motivations that set the plot were rather dull or even childish (from my personal persepctive) but in the long term they were actually comprehensible, they just needed more development. But i get why the game just released like that, it was literally made in 8 months, just to fullfill corporate timelines and expect to give a "closure" to the Kenway saga so they would focus the main efforts in the next-gen. That's why the gameplay is the same as Black Flag, and has the shortest campaign in all the franchise, and has the most bland and mundane secondary content of all the games, and the maps weren't as diverse and complex as other games, and it wasn't ported to PS4 or Xbox One nor even PC until years later. It was a miracle that the game released in a polish and working state even more than AC Revelations did, talking about copy-pasted games.

I'm inclined to agree with much of this. I had hoped ACIII, giving it has us start as Haytham would really explore the ideology/philosophy of the Templars and Assassins. Unfortunately it doesn't really go there but I guess maybe Connor seemed kinda closed off? Sadly Rogue doesn't really deal with it much either. It's so intergral to all the characters, it'd be nice to get into lol. I guess it could make some players uncomfortable if the protaganists don't seem squeaky clean (the cowards 🤭) Other than that I enjoyed Rogue. Kinda felt like a more refined Black Flag and playing Black Flag -> Rogue -> III is kind of a neat trilogy.

Still my favorite Assassin's Creed title. I'm still pissed they cut the production in half to lean more into Unity, as Quebec (Or whatever the second hub city was meant to be) would have been great.

About the 2014 situation... Although it's undeniable that Unity is an unpolished game (just playing it now shows this, it definitely didn't receive as many patches as people think), I can't help but feel there was some overreaction at the time. For many reasons: Ubisoft oversold it, people were inclined to disappointment after the WD situation, and so on. But watching a typical playthrough from that time (other than a bug compilation) doesn't appear much different. Unpolished, yes, but not unplayable (aside from the co-op). The fact that the infamous faceless meme occurred only on one graphics card and yet was brought up in almost every article about the game just baffles me.

And yet, the ending of Rouge leads into the opening of Unity. Meaning that if you didn’t have the next gen you wouldn’t get to continue the story, meanwhile if you upgraded to next gen you wouldn’t understand who killed Anno’s father.

6:29 but it's you who kills them, not Shay. The targets are confirmed to be killed by him, as part of the story, but... the soldiers are never said to have been murdered mercilessly like that. You choose to kill them. Not forced. Yes, I am guilt-tripping you :)

I always liked Rogue. Certainly not the levels of Black Flag, but enjoyable enough to waste a couple hours. Unlocking the entire map of NYC was a Gat damn achievement in my books lol. I also don't mind collectables. That's why I play certain rpgs/simulation games and Rogue to me is more of a sailor simulation that an AC game, bearing in my mind I'm not much of an AC fan/player so much that I've played every game. Black Flag was the 1st AC game I played from start to finish, and I spent majority of the game as a pirate simulator that had a very rich woven story in-between the mayhem.
