And near the end of the game theres a sidequest where Yasuke is taken back by his Jesuit slavers and it was your mission to free him and that explains why Yasuke faded from history.
Yea, even in the historical books there is very little evidence that Yasuke was given samurai status. William Adams on the other hand, his status of being a navigator/samurai is greatly documented. But wokies will continue comparing the two as if they have the same level of importance.

I am frustrated as a Japanese. You can have as many black men and women as you want if you set it in Africa. But what about Japan? Chronicle China is not well known, but the main character was Chinese. (But it was only a woman.) Are East Asian men not used to being assassins?
"only a woman"? Yeah, I see a pattern. You know what, why don't you time travel back to Oda Nobunaga and tell him not to take Yasuke into his service. Also, did you complain when Nioh made Adams the protagonist?
This comment is fucking stupid because of the fact that he was historically a real person, plus they very likely chose Yasuke because of his amazing history, of course many other samurai have great history but America knows more about Yasuke than anyone else.
I remember someone at Ubislop years back saying they wouldn't ever make a Japanese AC for some dumb reason or another and now they are making one within the best timeframe for it but with the worst possible characters to lead it, this really is just a waste of the setting now.
I think it's a sign Ubisoft is getting desperate. They've already managed to divide their player base over their cash cow franchise and alienate a lot of them. Now they seem to be putting all their eggs in one basket by investing heavily into the "wok" crap because that's what most everyone else is doing. Typical of Ubisoft for quite awhile now - just trying to make money by approximating whatever seems popular at the moment. As good as the game was, I think this all started with AC4 jumping on the Pirate bandwagon at the time.
Also interesting is you can go onto wikipedia and look at the edit history. One 'user' was repeatedly removing the passage and several others were adding it back. Eventually it became an Edit war where Wikipedia initially added back the text, and locked the section for editing. A few minutes later Wikipedia, while it was still locked, removed the text. Their citation is that there is no conclusive evidence for 'the claim that yasuke was not a samurai'. The literal equivalent of amazon asking for proof that you didn't get your package.
Samurai was not a term widely used in documentation during that era. There's a ton of warriors from that era that fall into the 'we don't know if they were samurai by today's standards but they may as well have been by the standards of the era and region'.
The worst part here is Wikipedia actually rewriting historical events to, presumably, support a video game. Had already lost hope for the site, but this was still shocking to hear.

If you morons know the history that you speak of. Yasuke was a real person, he was in fact African and he was also a Samurai. In the mid to late 1500's he came to Japan with a Italian priest in hopes to spread the word of his god. That is when the lords men put their eyes on a giant of a man with black skin they had to bring him to their master. The lord took a liking to Yasuke because of his size and strength and took him under his wing, years later he was a decorated samurai and the lords best friend.
Yaske was likely the only African in the area and so that name makes sense. Calling Adewalde "Negro" would get one deleted. At least the way I played it. Loved deleting bigots for hours.

Barely researching I found how Japan had a more tame xenophobia compared to after the 17th century, but it was still prevalent in the culture... also, one Japanese twitter comment summarized a most enjoyable viewpoint: "Why must this game be about a foreigner coming to japan to butcher its citizens?" The fact this game is taking such a racist action while trying to push DEI politics seems like another tipping point that might help correct the industry. Remember, Netflix paid 2 billion USD for simply “distorting the Egyptian identity” with their Cleopatra show; imagine the threat to a much smaller company like Ubisoft getting a fine like that... for simply trying to push an agenda... I love Assassin's Creed China most, as it was all I could really play on my laptop during my childhood, and only at 14-20 fps. I would be cool with the concept, if they didn't say that it was a historical era. I did a lot of research on yasuke cuz I thought it was cool as hell that a black samurai was a thing, but ive did research and everything they're doing with him in this game Feels like full on pandering. They could've made him s DLC character like they did for Awale in AC4. They should've made the Ninja customizable, and the fact that this is THE first time they do anything with Japan and i feel they completely wasted this cool idea that ive always wanted on pandering. And I sadly won't be purchasing this. Such an amazing idea wasted and it makes me sad.😢
The thing that's most worrying is that they've been receiving a lot of pressure to make their society more "modern" pushing things like " LGBTQIA+/gender rights" and urges to take in refugees, with some proposed practically claiming mass immigration is the answer to all their problems. There is also NOT any evidence or Historicsl sources saying Yasuke was never a Samurai. It is complety fabricsted narrative on social media from those who cannot accept historical fact due to his race. In addition to that Yasuke was never a custodial servant and was never seen or or referred to as a “pet” as many white people and racists on the far-right have been saying to try and denigrate and disrespect Yasuke. The fact is Yasuke has also been referred to as a “Black Samarui” for hundreds of years and there have been many Biographical Novels, documentaries, TV shows, Netlfix Anime series, videos games and Animated programs for over 5 decades. So the Ubisoft game referring to him as a Samurai has nothing to do with DEI or political correctness as some have suggested. Yasuke was first introduced to Japans school history book curriculum as a “Afro-Samurai” in 1961 and the first Childrens book on Yasuke was released in Japan in 1968 by author Yoshio Kurusu and artist Genjirō Mita published a children's book about Yasuke titled Kurosuke. The following year, the book won the Japanese Association of Writers for Children Prize.”
If Ubisoft really wanted to make something unique, and they insist on having Yasuke as a playable male protagonist, they should've ignored all the exaggerated and bombastic fictions/speculations about him as some badass samurai. Instead, in true Assassin's Creed fashion, they should've used the minimal and lackluster information about him as a convenient cover-up for why he came to Japan, why he became close to Nobunaga Oda, and why he basically disappeared without a trace. But that would require actual creativity from the writing team, and that's not what Ubislop is all about anymore.
I'm not even that mad about the meat riding of Yusuke, but to also have the second protagonist be a chick, I mean that's just overdoing it at this point. What they should've done is have a Japanese guy, a Samurai who'd become a ronin and take Yusuke with him and go into hiding. Knowing the friendship and respect he and his leader shared, the Samurai would honor it and tell him that the enemy will come for them and they must fight in resistance. So the now ronin would train Yusuke and tell him that they must stay undercover, so they would go to the Portuguese to make it seem like Yusuke got turned back to them and they would let him go in secret where the Japanese guy would take him after faking his own death. Then the two would be in hiding and the ronin would tell Yusuke that what they will do is for vengeance and honor, but they will become shadows in history, ghosts that never existed. So then they meet some ninjas at some point as the Japanese would tell Yusuke about the legends of the ninjas and when they find them, they would pay for training. Later on the ninjas and them would become allies as the clan that they joined got targeted as well and so now the survivors of the clan would agree on taking them in and create a new circle. That reformed clan would make the two protagonists ninjas and they all would fight in resistance together and avenge their fallen ones and leaders. That's how they should've done it. Yusuke would still be there and they would still get their woke points and with the Japanese character, the fans would also be pleased. So it would've been a win-win for everyone. If they really wanted to have a female character too, then one of the ninja side characters could've been a woman and so there you have it. It still would all work out fine.
Imagine how racist one can be to take other people's culture and do whatever they want with it. This is an absolute sign of malice and disrespect towards what other people have. This thing here is absolutely disgusting and i hope Japan retaliates hard on Ubisoft's racism.

One other thing that wasn't mentioned and it's also why Yasuke wouldn't have anything to do with those in Iga. The territory for the past 150 years was isolated and any outsiders/strangers not from the area were unwelcome. It's similar to what Japan had in place regarding foreigners except to everyone not from the provence including other Japanese. Furthermore they were also raiding neighboring territories. At some point Nobunaga became fed up with them and sent one of his son's to quell their rebellion and take control of the region. They were experts in guerilla warfare and wiped out the army. Nobunaga became outraged and sent a larger army into the region to kill everyone and burn everything they came across in commiting genocide. This is basically Ubisoft cloning Tenchu.
As a Black person this insults me too. Plenty of culture and history to be found in Africa that is *never* touched by any media at all. Not just talking North African either, Ethiopia, Kenya, what's known as South Africa and Nigeria now etc. This is them admitting they don't think African history is good enough for a game or movie or whatever. Only White or Asian cultures are worth anything and Black people have to be forced into their's. Not understanding these cultures became so beloved because they were depicted with care and creativity. Same can be done with the continent of Africa, the most ancient of them all anthropologically speaking. They just want to use people of African descent for social points but don't actually care about us. As a result there's a worldwide growing animosity towards Black people appearing in anything because of this propaganda. It really sucks.
True, an AC game based on the Zulu empire would sound amazing. It's disheartening to see that these writers don't genuinely care about diversity or representation, because that would take actual effort
