Assassin's Creed - What's The Right Way Of Wearing The Hidden Blade?

15 months ago, I made a video ranking all the hidden blade variations that we’ve seen over a span of 1 & a half decades & 12 main titles!! And across the years, this marquee weapon has been changed and altered significantly, with almost each subsequent game showcasing a new avatar of blade!! Some have received overwhelming love & some have been nothing more than a faded footprint in the annuls of Assassin’s Creed history!! But one argument has constantly loomed over this topic and has been discussed almost every single day in the comments section and that is whether the hidden blade belongs on the inside or the outside of an assassin’s wrist!! I had had enough of this back and forth, so I decided to analyze the topic in detail and come to a final conclusion and end this dispute once and for all!!

from an assassin viewpoint, the blade should 100% be on the inside of the wrist. the hidden blade is about efficiency, speed, and concealment. truly, how many people are looking at the bottom of your wrist. But if its being used by someone like eivor, it would be much more practical to put it outside of your wrist. the blade would still be quick and efficient, but most definitley not concealed. Eivor's blade literally has the edge of the weapon poking out of the gauntlet
@VZXAssassin

Not just the lack of concealment, there's also the danger of the blade being damaged if he tries to deflect swords!!

@@VZXAssassin True but with proper maintenance that really shouldn't be an issue also on the outside you gain more power in the strike then the inside.

@@VZXAssassin But to be fair, that's not the blade's fault. It is a regular inside worn Hidden Blade, beeing used by a Hidden One of Constantinople before Sigurd got it in his hands and later gifted it to his stepsister. Eivor ist just wearing it outside out of personal preference only, had it been made to be worn that way there would be extra plating to protect it. And Eivor seems to be perfectly aware of that, she's often using a shield or a second weapon instead of trying to block with her wrist.
@CraftMotion

Eivor's Hidden Blade is sometimes portayed with the tip sticking out a bit, however I just checked some of my screenshots from AC Valhalla to make sure I remember it correctly and indeed the tip of the blade is NOT sticking out in the game. It is completley stored in it's casing. With Eivor beeing a viking, her Hidden Blade could almost pass a decorative bracer she stole in a raid. Like you said, in context, her Hidden Blade makes quite sense.

Before anyone gets mad, there's a difference between an Assassin (capital A) and an assassin (someone who kills targets). An Assassin is anyone part of the Hidden Ones or Assassin Brotherhood. Kassandra/Alexios and Eivor are assassins: They kill targets, but are not part of the order and so don't count

Well, the Hidden Blade should be worn on the inside concealed from your enemies until of course you use it to end them. But Darius is a proto-assassin so he has an excuse not having a Creed to follow. Eivor doesn't use it hidden because he wants to show off too everyone the weaponry he packs. I think wearing it on the outside should just signify that you work with the Brotherhood or Hidden Ones but you don't join their order. Eivor is definitely an assassin just as much as Alexios, they just different assassins.

@QuatarTarandir
@QuatarTarandir 10 месяцев назад
@iterationfackshet1990 Ya, I always thought it was better under as it actually allows more blade to be used with less length to the actual blade. The problem with on top as it has to pass over your fist, losing a few inches, while on the bottom you can move your hand back and not have that problem. Also, I always thought the most realistic way to eject it was a string connected to a ring, which would make the loosing a finger impossible as the movement to eject it would move your fingers out of the way
@iterationfackshet1990
@iterationfackshet1990 10 месяцев назад
@@QuatarTarandir losing the ring finger only happened so that you could use the blade with a closed fist, but they did use a string connected to the finger until Altaïr modified it.

Also, after Bayek’s founding of the Hidden Ones, the hidden blade’s design was modified over time to be slimmer compared to Darius’ original blade. This made it easier to conceal over the centuries, lending towards its discrete tactical advantage Fun little fact, Basim’s hidden blade in Mirage was quite slim, looking possibly slimmer than Altair’s hidden blade. So, it could be argued that relatively little modifications to the blade’s design around this era to were made by Altaïr so that the blade did not require a finger sacrifice

Well Darius had the first ever blade so it's not like anyone would've suspected it to be a weapon up close, also most of the people who saw it up close were his targets so it's not like they can go round warning people, also also he built it, he can wear it wherever he wants. I can give Eivor a pass because, it doesn't look like a weapon up close, just a fancy armring, also it looks cool.

The whole byak was insecure about losing his finger thing and the tactical advantage of it from the hidden ones goes out the window if you actually play origins, he tries to stop them from cutting off their fingers, however when face with their conviction he allowed them to do it. It was and always will be a sign of dedication, later on it becomes a thing everyone must do to be initiated because something that is made traditional by a few can become holy doctrine to the many. Eivor not wearing it correctly is because he isnt an assassin, he has no devotion and therefore has no reason to take the symbol onto himself. Besides that the blade wasn't meant for him, it was meant to be a gift to sigrund in the hopes he would join the hidden ones, but instead gave it as a gift to his brother and right hand. Now someone might say "its not a hidden blade then" and to that i say, "yes it is" the blade is covered and connot be seen until it comes out, now your argument is that its gold and extremely noticable, and only think that matters on the island where you pretend to be a slave. Now ask why i think it doesn't matter otherwise and my answer is that Eivor is a viking, a people know for pillaging villages and stealing valuables and several vikings are seen wearing rings, necklaces and other adornments. Eivors blade is hidden in plain sight, the only way you are gonna know is if A you yourself are/were an assassin or B you are an experienced templar, but experienced templars tend to be in high society and are protected by guards, by the time you are able to identify someone is an assassin is probably right around the point where you aren't getting the chance to tell anyone Also Eivor got his blade before it was modified so it was still (as far as context that we have goes) designed to be a outer blade anyway Edit: just so people know, this is my opinion and I'm open to discussing it further. Any smarmy attitude that is perceived through reading and my choice of words was absolutely supposed to be smarmy but not antagonist.

Well Darius first used the blade and he wore it on the outside, as shown when he killed Xerxes. When Bayek used it. He suffered the loss of his ring finger when killing Eurdoros. The whole creed used this as a code of honor and made every hidden blade REQUIRE the loss of ring finger. Up until Ezio and Da Vinci. Da Vinci said it was modified some time back so it would no longer require ring finger sacrifice. Ever since Ratonhnake:ton, the followers of the creed dont really honor the code of conduct as they all should. Ratonhnake:ton wasn't formally inducted with the "Nothing is True, Everything is Permitted" nor was his ring finger cut or burned. Achilles just trained him and gave him his robes and was like "well your an assassin now, Go kill the templars"

Regarding AC3, I do remember some dialogue how Achilles was teaching the history and lives of past Assassins. But it's fitting how the traditional initiation was dropped since both of them (Connor and Achilles) were pragmatic in the matter. In AC:R, when we play as older Altair he has two hidden blades, but the finger is missing only on the left hand.

Seriously, why has to be there a right and a wrong variant? Also an ourwards worn Hidden Blade can be perfectly hidden if you conceal it well enough. At the end of the day most Hidden Blades are visible anyways, even the inside "right" variant can be easy to spot if you're a Templar knowing what to look for. My problem with this video is that you try to give the one and only answer but that's just simply not possible. Not every user of a Hidden Blade uses it the same way. There are different fighting styles, different ways to approach a mission, different personal requirements and preferences... For every situation the right tool, for every assassin the right Hidden Blade design. If concealed enough a Hidden Blade beeing worn outside may work just as fine as the inside variant, it may even help the user in their personal style of fighting. In truth all advantages and disadavantages of a certain design are bound to the user. Like Eivor, she's not a Hidden One, she's a warrior, with her culture and philsophy in mind it perfectly makes sense to wear the Hidden Blade the way she does, transforming it into something of a fighting blade, I suppose she would feel uncomfortable wearing it on the inside. And then take someone like Ezio. He was an Assassin, striking from the shadows instead of constantly engaging in open combat. For him wearing the blade on the inside was the only logical choice, exacrly because of the arguments you mentioned. It's just the best way for most Assassin's for obvious reasons. But that doesn't make the original wrong. There is not definite answer to this debate. There is no definite right or wrong way to wear the Hidden Blade. Wear it the way you want. Wear it the way that matches your style. I have to say, personally I'd wear it on the inside, for, again, obvious reasons. But if someone wanted to wear it on the outside I'd be like " Sure, why not?"

But Leonardo was not the first one who made a modified Hidden Blade. Assassins like Giovanni Auditore already used them long before Leonardo first got to see a codex page. Altaïr already had a second Hidden Blade on his right forearm without removing a finger and he already used at least the gun upgrade. I don't want to say Leonardo's work is not awesome, don't get me wrong. And another thing: Eivor (it's more pronounced like Äiwor instead of Aiwor") is female in canon ;)
